~Mitch's POV~
I called goodbye to my father before grabbing my wooden basket and walking out the door. I walked away from our little cottage and down the trail leading to town. Early in the morning before everyone is up and about, it's actually quite peaceful. But in all honesty, I only wake up early just to watch the chaos of the town ensue with the crow of the rooster.
As I approach the entrance to the town, I fiddle with the ruby red book inside my basket. As per usual, I was heading to Seto's bookstore to return the book I borrowed and to get sorcery lessons from him.
Upon entering the village, I was greeted with a chorus of bonjours. The one that stood out was my good friend Joseph the baker. He was known throughout the village for his fantastic breads and amazing cakes.
"Bonjour Mitch! How are you and your father this fine morning?" Joseph exclaimed as he filled up a cart full of bread and pastries. I smiled.
"Bonjour to you too Joseph! And I'm doing well. My father is working on his invention for the annual invention contest in the next town over. I'm sure he'll win this year!" I said happily.
"That's great! Here, take these pastries. One for you and one for your father." Joseph said as he handed me two warm clothes.
"Oh Joseph! Je vous remercie! Also, how's your cat Stampy doing?" I graciously accepted the pastries and put them in my basket.
"He's doing great actually! David has been taking care of him for the last few days because I've been really busy with Stampy's Hot Buns here, so he volunteered to watch him! That and his dog Squid really wants to play with him." Stampy explained to me.
"That's great! Well, I better get going. Don't wanna be late for Seto's lessons again!" I exclaimed happily as I began to walk backwards towards the center of town.
"Au revoir Mitch! Have a good day and tell your father I said good luck!" Stampy said upon entering his store.
"Au revoir!" I yelled back. I turned around and walked towards Seto's library. I fiddled with my dog tags, the one thing I got from my mother before she died. It was only two years ago.
"Mitch, your mother would like to see you." Dr. Kipz stated sadly as he walked out of my mother's room. I rushed into the room to find my pale mother lying in the worn out hospital bed. I walked over to her side and knelt down. She smiled slightly at me before grabbing my hand in hers.
"You look so handsome Mitch." My mother whispered slowly. I felt my eyes start to fill up with tears.
"Thank you mom." I said, my voice cracking near the end. My mother smiled at me before lifting her other hand to her neck. She fumbled with the clasp before pulling away her golden dog tags. She opened my hand up and dropped the tags into my open palm. As I looked at the tags, she spoke.
"Take... this...as....a..reminder...and...one...day..." She paused to have a coughing fit before continuing. "I....know....you'll... find someone.... special...And make sure.....to show him love..."
I grew a little confused at that part.
"Mom, what do you mean by him?" I asked looking up. My mother's eyes were closed and her hand had gone limp in mine. I began to shake.
"Mom? Please wake up! MOM!"
I shook the flashback out of my head as I entered Seto's bookstore. I learned from Seto the day she died that my mother had been a sorceress, a descendant of an evil sorceress who had turned the prince into a beast. But those were just legends. Right?
"Hello?" I called put into the seemingly empty shop.
"I'll be up in a sec Mitch! Just put the book in it's normal spot on the second to last shelf!" I heard Seto call from his workshop just below me. I rolled my eyes as I put the book back on it's shelf with all the other archery books. I put my basket down on a nearby table and waited for Seto to appear.
A few minutes later, Seto poofed into the room. He smiled at me before motioning me over to the enchantment table that sat in the middle of the tiny library.
"So today we are going to go over standard summoning spells. All you have to do is mutter these phrases along with the object you want to summon. It's that simple." Seto explained as he pointed out the phrases I was to say. I nodded before beginning the phrase.
"Vocans iuniperorum!" I said aloud. But instead of summoning a broomstick like I wanted, a pencil flew out of nowhere and hit me right in the face.
"Just keep practicing." Seto said. And that's what I did for another hour. After being hit by about ten more pencils, dodging thirty books, and evading a flying couch, I tiredly exited the store and headed home. Before I was able to exit the town though, I was stopped by an all too, annoying face.
"Why hello there beautiful." Ty said as he put his arm around my shoulders. I could hear his lackey, Bashur, laughing his head off in the corner.
"Why bonjour, Ty. It's nice to see you but I have to head home to my father." I stated kindly, even though I hated Ty's guts.
"You mean that crazy old man?" Bashur stated as he continued to laugh at Ty's antics. I glared at him.
"My father is not crazy! He's a genius!" I stated coldly as an explosion sounded in the distance. I turned towards my house to see smoke piling out of the windows.
"Sacre bleu!" I gasped out and ran towards my house with Ty and Bashur laughing from where they still stood.
I entered the house and called out for my father. I should probably explain though. He's not my actual father, he's my adoptive one. My father died when I was really young. So that's why I have two tags on my necklace instead of one.
"Crainer?" I yelled into the smoke.
"I'm over here Mitchell! In the basement!" I heard Crainer exclaim from the downstairs. I laid my basket on the table before rushing downstairs to see what my father had done. I coughed into my arm as I opened the windows in the basement so I could see better. There, in all his glory, was Crainer and his invention. It was an over complicated wood chopper. Crainer sat on top of it in his built in seat and coughed loudly.
"Welp. Too much oil in the fuel rod. Say, can you hand me that wrench beside you?" Crainer said to me. I rolled my eyes but handed him the tool anyway.
"Let's see. A few twists here and few there and done!" Crainer yelled in his Danish accent.
"Should we see if it works?" I asked from my seat on the table. Crainer nodded and pulled a lever beside him. The machine sputtered to life and started to move. It drove until it hit the pile of wood stacked in the corner. It began to chop up the wood into small pieces.
"It's works!" We both exclaimed as Crainer shut the machine off. I turned to Crainer.
"I know you'll win for sure!" I said happily. Crainer smiled and hugged me in a fatherly manner.
"Thank you for having faith in me Mitchell." He sighed happily. We pulled away from our hug and began to pack things Crainer would need for his journey to the fair.
A few hours later, we were outside and saying our goodbyes.
"Goodbye Mitchell. You take care of everything while I'm gone alright?" Crainer asked as we embraced for a final time. I smiled.
"Of course father. Have I ever let you down?" I asked. He chuckled.
"You never have, and I know you never will." We pulled apart from the hug and Crainer jumped on our horse Betty. He snapped the reins and they were off, the invention trailing behind him. I waved goodbye one last time before they disappeared into the forest.
~3rd Person~
It was now almost midnight. A cold summer breeze blew the hair of the old Danish man as he and Betty trotted along the path. The man had his map out, making sure they weren't lost. But by fate, they already were.
"Let's go this way Betty." Crainer told his horse. Betty looked at the direction the man wanted to go. It was a dark and dreary path that held dead trees and most likely wolves.
The horse denied but was forced to go down that path anyway. The farther they went down the trail, the scarier and scarier the place became. It seemed like everything was going fine, until the wolves came. Dark, almost pitch black colored wolves jumped out of the shadows. They scared both the man and the horse. Crainer was bucked off Betty as she ran away from the wolves. The invention had already fallen off at the first encounter.
Crainer stood up from the ground and ran. He ran until he came across a peculiar sight. Castle gates stood in his path. Crainer rushed to the gates and got inside, closing them behind him as the wolves hit them. Crainer sighed in relief before turning to the humongous castle looming in front of him.
He approached the wooden doors, hesitating a bit before knocking. The door opened a few minutes later, but it seemed no one was there. Confused, the man entered the building. Unaware of the castle's inhabitants.
