Certain as the sun
Through the library windows you saw the first snowflakes falling. It was not new that the castle grounds were always cold, as if in an eternal winter, but this was the first time you had seen snow since you arrived.
In the blink of an eye, you had already risen from your chair and left your book unfinished on one of the library tables, running to your room for Mrs. Davis to give you a cloak.
As you descended the staircase, a familiar silhouette appeared from across the room.
"Where are you going?" Agatha asked, "You are not going to run away again, are you?"
Her tone was playful, but you recognized concern in her question.
"It's snowing, I'll go outside and see," you explained, shrugging, "do you want to come with me?"
Agatha seemed to think for a second, but then she nodded, wearing a cloak with a snap of her fingers. A few days ago you were uncertain about finding out that magic was real and seeing it being used, but in that moment you could only think about how cool - and practical - it was. And how good Agatha was at that.
"Are you going to stand there staring at me, Miss Y/N?" She raised an eyebrow with a smirk.
You shook your head, blushing from being caught staring, and went down the remaining steps.
Together you left the castle and you sighed, watching the landscape of the mountains, which rose above the snow-covered trees.
"It's like I'm seeing it for the first time, you know?" Agatha remarked, with a distant and nostalgic look, "it is very beautiful."
"Yes, it is," you agreed, looking into her blue eyes. They were also very beautiful. Blushing you turned your vision to the garden, "what do you think about going to see Jarvis?"
"I... I don't know, he doesn't seem to like me very much. I think it's the horns," she chuckled.
"Jarvis likes everyone," you shook your head, leading her over to the horse, which stirred a little. Oh, don't make me look like a liar now, Jarvis.
You stroked his snout, making him calm down, whispering that it was okay, that Agatha was a friend. But as soon as the phrase registered in your brain, you cringed, "I mean... our lady."
"I don't care, " she reassured you, "I haven't heard my name in a while, and I like how you say it."
And once again your face flushed adorably, at least in Agatha's opinion. You cleared your throat, before taking her hand, leading it to Jarvis's back, who this time accepted her affection gracefully. Agatha smiled genuinely, showing her fangs, but all you felt was your heart miss a beat, although she didn't seem to notice how your breath was hitched.
But she would soon, if you didn't get out of there fast. So you let her get used to Jarvis on her own, going up the stairs. When you looked back, you saw an Agatha very different from the Agatha of the early days. There was something sweet and almost kind in her.
Why hadn't you seen this before?
When your hand touched the railing of the stairs, you noticed the fluffy snow under your fingers and immediately had an idea. A dangerous idea, but before considering the consequences you were already making a snowball and hitting it on Agatha's shoulder.
You couldn't help but laugh when you saw her shocked expression, clearly not expecting an attack from you.
Your fun was short-lived, however.
With wide eyes you saw three snowballs rise from the ground in the purple mist, and the last thing you saw before being hit directly in the face was Agatha's smirk.
Okay, you deserved that one.
That did not mean that you would not fight back.
Ah, it would be a long afternoon.
But somehow you didn't even see the time go by and soon it was time for dinner.
You had to admit that you were surprised when Agatha sat next to you, instead of sitting on the other side of the big table. You felt your chest warm up when you realized that she really wanted to be as close to you as possible.
And how could she not want to? Agatha couldn't get your eyes off her mind, no one had ever looked at her that way. And initially, not even you. But now that look never left your face and it was getting harder and harder to ignore it. Or ignore how you didn't even shudder when you touched her hand. Or how comfortable you looked around her, not ever fearing her whenever you scolded or provoked her. You really were something else and she couldn't deny it.
The plates were placed on the table and again Agatha's eyes flashed purple, levitating her fork in front of her. Her gaze connected to yours, a little embarrassed.
When you opened your mouth, she was expecting you to say anything except for what you said, "can you do that with mine too?"
She opened that smile that you were learning to love, clearly relieved, before the fork lifted from your hold, stopping in front of your mouth. When you tried to bite it though, it backed away. You pouted at her, who was clearly enjoying herself.
The forked approached your mouth, but once again backed away from you, making you let out a soft whine, "come on, Agatha, won't you let me eat, please?"
Your soft eyes were quickly becoming her weakness, she could tell.
"Well, since you're asking so nicely," she relented.
With a chuckle you finally bit the potato. Yeah, you had to admit it was fun. And Agatha seemed to love feeding you, because she went on doing it all through dinner.
And of course she loved it. She loved seeing your nose schrunching and your eyes narrowing with a smile every time the silverware levitated around, sometimes teasing you again to see your cute pout.
Through a crack in the kitchen door, everyone watched the scene unfold. It was almost unbelievable, to see Agatha being so carefree and kind to you. And how you also responded in kind.
"Well, who'd have thought?" Darcy murmured.
"Oh, bless my soul," Wanda cooed.
"Who'd have known?" Monica raised her eyebrows.
"Well, who indeed? And who'd have guessed they'd come together on their own?" Jimmy clapped its candles happily.
"Here's a thought, perhaps there's something there that wasn't there before," Vision suggested.
"What is?" Tommy whispered, looking as confused as his brother.
"There may be something there that wasn't there before," Wanda replied simply.
"What is it, what's there?" Billy looked around, almost coming out of his saucer.
"I'll tell you both when you're older."
Tommy spun around and tried to rise a little, making his voice as thick as he could manage, "okay, I'm older."
Wanda laughed at the attempt, they were just too cute, "oh, boys..."
After dinner, Agatha accompanied you to the library. You were not sleepy and wanted to take the opportunity to continue the book you left behind earlier. And the brunette wanted to enjoy your company for some more time.
You sat in front of the fireplace, to get warm, yes, but also to get a better look at the book in your hands. Still, it was not the best of lighting, as you mentioned to the witch when she sat next to you.
And again you were impressed - and thankful - when Agatha conjured a ball of light that remained overhead, illuminating the pages like the daylight. True, she was not the prince charming of the books you read. But she was far from being the evil witch too, you realized.
As you read aloud, at the request of Agatha herself, you remembered something that she mentioned earlier. Your attempted escape.
"You know," you cut off your reading, looking at her, "I never thanked you for saving my life, in the forest."
Agatha looked surprised for a second, and then shrugged, "I guess I didn't thank you for not letting the wolves eat me, either."
Before you could answer, several laughs sounded outside the library. It was easy to know who they belonged to.
"They know how to have fun, don't they?"
"Yeah, they do... but as soon as I arrive, the fun is over," she looked down sadly.
As you had done it yourself several times.
"I understand you, in my village they called me 'fascinating', but in my opinion it was not a compliment."
Agatha frowned, "your village must be terrible."
"It was as lonely as your castle."
But maybe you didn't need to be alone anymore.
Perhaps now you had each other.
Perhaps.
