Chapter 18- An Important Question

Over the next couple of years, you and Alphonse continued dating. People thought it must be difficult for you to stick with him when you knew he would likely never get his body back, but as you told Al many times, you didn't really care. He would always be human at heart, your literal knight in shining armor.

Edward and Winry had gotten married in that time as well, with Alphonse as the best man and you as the maid of honor, with all the servants, Hoenheim, and Aunt Pinako in attendance. According to Al, Ed had said Pinako was a bit hesitant about it at first, but eventually gave her blessing to the couple.

About a year later, their son, Edwin, was born. He was a cute little thing, with golden eyes and a hairstyle closely resembling his father's. You would occasionally see him being chased by one of his parents around the castle, due to his adventurous tendencies, even at such a young age. He would try and hide behind both Alphonse and you when either of you came into his line of sight.

You had a strange feeling he might start calling you 'Aunt (Y/n)' when he learned to speak, even if you weren't officially related to him.

Yet.

Spook, the little kitten Al had once asked you and Winry if he could keep, had grown to a fullsize cat over the years. She still tended to stick with you or Alphonse, usually both since a large portion of your time was spent together.

Al would research alchemy in the library, while you worked on the official job you had been given in your castle home. You were now the official librarian, and you couldn't have been happier with your work.

Although you were mostly content with your life, there was one thing that was bothering you. So much so that you found yourself daydreaming about it more often than not.

Your face would erupt into a red color whenever Alphonse snapped you out of your thoughts, which was often.

You were silently hoping he would raise up the courage to ask you about it.

On one of these seemingly average days, you were sorting the books as usual while Al was off in another part of the library searching through the alchemy books. You softly hummed a quiet tune to yourself. Your thoughts wandered as you worked, going to the subject that had consumed a lot of your thoughts lately.

From another area of the library, you suddenly heard a loud scraping sound. It was the sound of something heavy being dragged across the floor. You brushed it off as one of the servants moving one of the larger chairs, but as the sound continued, it became impossible to ignore. Sighing, you set down the remaining books to go investigate the noise.

Following your ears, you soon came across Alphonse, his back turned to you as he moved furniture around to create an open space. A music player was on the small table nearby, at the edge of the open space.

You guessed he hadn't heard you approach due to the noise that moving things around the room had caused, he hadn't acknowledged your presence in the slightest.

As he finished rearranging the area, he took a step backwards towards you and glanced around, surveying his work. After giving an approving nod, he turned around and nearly fell over when he at last saw you standing a few feet behind him.

"(Y-Y/n)!" Al shouted in surprise, reaching to cover the bag attached to his upper leg. "H-how long have you b-been standing there?"

"Not that long, I tried to ignore the loud noises coming from here at first, but then came to investigate when I realized that that wasn't going to work," you smiled innocently.

"O-oh, sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt you," he apologized.

"It's okay," you said, walking up and hugging him around his waist, the only area your arms were long enough to fully reach. "So what's all this?"

Al quickly avoided eye contact.

"I-it was supposed to be a surprise for you," he said, still looking away.

You gasped, blushing.

"Y-you did this for me?" You looked around at the moved furniture, then down at the floor to notice a large carpet placed in the center. Confusion momentarily clouded your mind.

"I don't mean to sound stupid, but, what is the surprise?"

Al quickly, and somewhat clumsily, moved over to the music player and started the music. A nice slow song came on, and he slowly walked back over to you.

As he approached, you could feel your face rise several degrees in temperature.

"A-Alphonse?"

"(Y/n), may I have this dance?" He said, holding out a hand.

You nodded silently, taking his hand and letting him lead you onto the makeshift dance floor.

Your face didn't cool down whatsoever.

Alphonse began leading the dance once the pair of you were in the center, helmet tinted equally pink. No matter how comfortable both of you were with each other, you couldn't help blushing when you were in close proximity with each other. However, that didn't stop you from doing so.

Silence loomed over the two of you for about a minute as you swayed back and forth, occasionally stealing glances of each other's faces.

"(Y-Y/n)," Al finally spoke.

You immediately met his gaze to show you were listening.

He took a deep breath, then continued speaking.

"E-Everyday, I feel like I'm falling more and more in love with you. You've always treated me like I'm human, instead of an empty suit of armor. You're kind, and smart, and funny, and beautiful. You're so very, very beautiful."

You kept staring into his red orbs, pleading internally that this was leading to what you had been hoping for for such a long time.

"I might be stuck like this forever, but I've decided that, eventually, I'm going to end it. But not for a long time. I-I know that I might be asking a lot, b-but," he faltered, looking down.

"But what, Al?" You asked, cheeks flushed pink.

He slowly raised his eyes to meet your (e/c) gaze.

"But I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

The music came to an end, but neither of you seemed to notice. You both had stopped moving during Al's little monologue. Silence lingered for several seconds. Your cheeks remained the dark pink color they had been for the past few minutes.

"A-Al, a-are y-you," you stuttered.

He stepped back a few feet, reaching into the bag on his thigh and pulling out a small box.

"I-I've wanted to ask you something for a long time, b-but I've been too scared to until today," He said.

Slowly, he kneeled down on one knee. He carefully opened the box to reveal a small, but beautiful ring.

"(Y-Y/n), will you, m-marry me?"

You stood, absolutely frozen for a few seconds. All of your daydreams seemed to be coming true right before your eyes. Months and months of anticipation had led up to this moment.

And it was totally worth it.

You rushed forward, hugging Alphonse around the shoulders.

"Of course I'll marry you! I don't think there's anyone else for me except you!" You shouted happily. Before he could move so that his face was out of your reach, you planted a long kiss on what would be his mouth.

He seemed surprised at first, but happily went along with it, his arms hugging your waist.

As you pulled apart, you looked at him lovingly, smiling all the while.

"You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to ask! I can understand why you were hesitant to pop the question, but you know me. I listen to my heart, and my heart says we're meant to be together. It's never let me down before," you continued grinning widely.

"I know, I know, but I couldn't help it. I just feel like you could just do so much better than me," Al said, still hugging your waist.

"But I wouldn't want to do better than you anyways," you said, pecking where his nose would be. "You're the one I love, and my heart doesn't change its mind."

"Yeah, you're right," you could hear the smile in Al's voice. "But it is nice to hear you say it."

You two stood there, staring at each other happily like love-sick idiots, for a few minutes.

"Say, does anyone but you know that you've asked me to marry you?"

"Nope. Not even brother knows about it," Al chuckled.

"Are we going to tell them now, or wait a little while?"

"Well," Al began, scooping you up bridal style.

You let out a surprised squeak, obviously not expecting the gesture.

"I think we should go tell them now, shall we?"

"A-Al! Put me down! Why are you suddenly so bold!?"

"Because I know your answer is yes, so I can be a lot less hesitant," he said. "Besides, you like getting carried anyways!"

Your cheeks dusted pink again as you looked down a little.

"Sometimes I think you know me too well," you mumbled.

Alphonse rushed out of the library with you in his arms, sprinting down the hall.

As you rushed by, you noticed a few confused looking servants. You felt your face return to its dark pink state.

"A-Alphonse, s-slow down!"

"Don't worry (Y/n)," Al slowed down a little, holding you a bit closer, "I won't let you fall."

(A/N- I HAVE BEEN SO EXCITED TO WRITE THIS CHAPTER AAAAAAAAAAAAAA! One more chapter left! I know, I know, it's sad that it's almost over. But hey, at least I'm (probably) finishing this book before school starts back up. That happens in about a week by the way. ;_;

Anyways, I hope you all liked this chapter as much as I liked writing it! See you in the next chapter!)
