Chapter 8 - Family Problems?

On Sunday morning, Zhan sat with his parents at breakfast and told them about his date with Yibo, or what should have been a date and somehow wasn't one at all. Still, he was happy and told them about it cheerfully. And he also told them that Yibo asked him if he wanted to spend the coming weekend with Yibo in his city apartment.

But unlike usual, Zhan's parents didn't smile or say how happy they were. Instead, Zhan's father asked, "Don't you think this is happening a little too fast?" A reaction Zhan didn't expect. Especially since he and Yibo had already gone much further two years ago than they plan to this coming weekend.

"Why do you think that dad?" Zhan finally asked, confused.

However, it was Zhan's mother who answered that question. "Because you just met again and just spent a few hours together. You don't even know each other yet. It's not like we're against it. But we also don't want you to rush into anything. Especially not until things are settled with Yibo's father."

"Mom, Dad. We want to spend the weekend together to get to know each other better. This is not about sex. And I'm well aware that Yibo's family is a big problem. I don't plan to rush into anything either." Replied Zhan.

"Like your mom said, we're not against it. We trust you and won't stop you from spending this weekend with him. We just want to make sure you don't forget to take care of yourself." Explained Zhan's father calmly.

"I'll always be careful, I promise. I know I shouldn't rush into anything. But this weekend is really just about us getting to know each other better. Yibo works a lot and doesn't have time to meet during the week. So we want to spend the weekend together."

"And you really want that? I mean, spend a whole weekend with Yibo?" Asked his mother.

"I want it that way. I can only get to know him better if I spend time with him. And this weekend together, is a good start. Don't worry about it. I'll be careful!" Replied Zhan.

When Zhan's parents smiled again in response, Zhan was reassured. He was already worried. Because his parents always trusted him and always supported him in everything. They even tracked down Yibo for him and helped him get close to Yibo. If they were now suddenly against the relationship with Yibo, Zhan would not know what to do. Because his relationship with his parents is very important to him, just like his relationship with Yibo.

While Zhan and his parents continued to enjoy their breakfast in loving comfort, things got a little uncomfortable elsewhere.

A few miles away, Yibo was also sitting at the breakfast table with his family and uncle. His mother saw the visit of her brother-in-law as an opportunity to drink two glasses of champagne at breakfast. While all the others preferred tea and coffee.

Uncle Wang, who is also a partner in the Wang company, was not there to watch his sister-in-law drink alcohol or to cuddle with the family. He had something to discuss that, at least in his eyes, would not tolerate any delay. But Yibo's father made it clear that he would not tolerate that at breakfast. What almost led to a quarrel between the two brothers.

But the two pulled themselves together and finished breakfast before going into the winter garden to talk. Yibo's mother followed them with the champagne bottle and loudly told everyone how silly she thought it was to have to talk about work on a Sunday morning. It just didn't interest anyone.

When all were seated Yibo's uncle said: "Well, I want that Yibo takes the position of his mother in the company and she retires from the business! She now caused problems more than once with her constant alcoholic escapades. More than 4 business partners want to terminate their cooperation with us if we do not remove her from her position. And my suggestion is to get Yibo out of the basement and finally put him in the executive position!"

Yibo then heard the birds chirping outside and even cars driving along nearby, so quiet it became in the house. Yibo assumed this was just the calm before the storm and that his parents would snap at any moment. But instead, his father replied, "Well, I have to admit that I've been thinking about it, too. Actually, Yibo is not ready yet. But I realize that my wife can no longer run the company. I've even gotten him a personal assistant who..."

"You should pay close attention to what you say next." Yibo's mother interrupted him. She held the champagne bottle in one hand and her empty champagne glass in the other. She waved it around and more than once she almost smashed it on the table, she was so angry.

"Why don't you see it for yourself? You can't do the work anymore. You're drunk every day. Customers and business partners complain about you all the time. Besides, you're not even at the company every day anymore. And when you are, you do nothing but cause trouble anyway." Replied Uncle Wang.

Yibo's mother threw the empty champagne glass at Uncle Wang and shouted that he had nothing to say because he only owned 35% of the company and had no knowledge anyway. Then Hai Kuan intervened to calm his mother. "Mom, maybe it's better this way for now. You can go to therapy and then rejoin the company."

But that only made her angrier. She swirled her champagne bottle around, pointing it at Yibo. "This was your idea, wasn't it?" She shouted. Yibo shook his head. He didn't even understand what was going on right now. Because he hadn't even thought about working in the company's management position. It was enough for him to be in charge of the marketing department.

And why did it seem to him that his father had already been involved in Uncle Wang's plan to depose Yibo's mother? Because his father didn't seem at all surprised and immediately agreed with his brother. Yet the two rarely agreed on anything. Especially when it came to the company.

Yibo still remembered how his dad used to rant about how his brother only owned 35% of the shares because they couldn't have expanded the company back then without his help. His dad always said Uncle Wang didn't earn it just because he invested some of his money in the company.

And if Yibo's father had his way, Uncle Wang would be nothing more than a silent partner who only gets his money every month and otherwise has nothing else to do with the company. Therefore, Yibo was more than surprised by this unity of the two. And not only Yibo, also his brother seemed surprised and even a little shocked.

Hai Kuan stood up and said, "Well, I have no idea what's going on right now. But I don't want to have anything to do with it."

"Sit back down immediately." Yibo's father ordered.

"Dad, you can't be serious! You can't kick Mom out of her own company!" Replied Hai Kuan.

"They don't want to kick her out. They want her to leave voluntarily. It would be better for her standing in society, too." Interjected Hai Kuan's wife, proving that she was probably one of the few people present in the room who knew what was going to happen today.

"Don't tell me you knew about all this!" Hai Kuan replied bitterly.

"Yes, I did know. And I think it's a good thing. Because your mom is a hard alcoholic. She is too much of a risk for the company. Besides, she helped herself with the company's money. She took trips, went shopping, and ate at the most expensive restaurants. She paid for escort services for women at least three times a week. Women pay for the escort of young handsome men and many of them, like your mother, give them expensive gifts. And she paid for all this with the company's credit card! She has become unbearable!" Replied the wife of Hai Kuan.

"So what? My oh-so-great husband does it too! He has sex with noble prostitutes twice a week and pays $5,000 for it each time! And I refuse to be driven out of my own company so easily! You denounce me for being an alcoholic. But who made me that way?" Yibo's mother shouted.

"Okay you know what? I'm going to leave now. You guys can keep fighting or whatever. But leave me out of it!" Said Yibo and got up from his chair. He had heard enough. Yes, he too hated that his mother drank so much and was often drunk or even intoxicated shortly after lunch every day. But he didn't like how his family was handling it now.

"Yibo! You stay here! It's also about you and your career. You will take your mother's job." Returned Yibo's father.

"But I don't want to do that! Dad, I've only been working at the company for two years and I have nothing to do with finance! Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't know anything about the job."

"Then your brother will take your mother's job and you will take your brother's job."

"What if I don't want to? I thought you were happy with my work in the marketing department?"

"So am I. But you are a Wang and my son. You belong in leadership. Your uncle feels the same way. And so do many other of our investors."

"But..."

"Yibo, maybe you should think of the benefits you would get with the promotion. Getting off work on time every day. The city apartment. I think you know what I mean." Replied his father.

Of course Yibo knew. It was about Zhan and nothing else. And he found it disgusting that his father wanted to lure him with it. As if Zhan was just a thing to him and not a person. Before Yibo could say anything, his father allowed him to leave. He just told him to think it over and not to forget that he also has more power in the new position.

Yibo did not go upstairs to his room this time as he usually did. Instead, he went outside to his car and sat inside. He thought about his father's last words. And he knew that when it came to Zhan, Yibo would put up with anything just to be with him. Nothing and no one was more important to him than Zhan by now.

But should he really pass over his own mother for that? And what would Zhan think about it?

At the latter question, Yibo started the engine of his car and drove off. He wanted to talk to Zhan about all that had just happened and what his father had said. He had to talk to him about it. He needed to know what Zhan thought of all this.

When Yibo arrived at Zhan's house, he turned off the engine and got out of the car. He went straight to the front door, rang the bell and waited until the door was opened. This time it was Zhan, who still had his sleeping clothes on, who opened the door. Yibo was so relieved to see him that he hugged him and squeezed him tightly.

Zhan let Yibo into the house and they went into the living room where Zhan's parents were. Without further ado, Yibo told the three of them what had just happened at his house. And he also made it clear how confused he was about it and that he didn't know what to do now.

"Well, whether you agree or not, your dad and uncle are going to run your mom out of the business." Said Zhan's mother. Zhan nodded.

"If I were you, I would play along. No one says you have to agree with them and ally with them. But it would be better to at least pretend that you agree." Said Zhan's father.

"What my parents are saying is that you should think about yourself and your future. Since you don't know what will happen if you refuse. They might take away your job and then you would be left without anything. Try to make this thing work for you." Explained Zhan.

"So what should I do now?" Asked Yibo. For he was far too confused to be able to think clearly.

"Save as much money as you can. And it's best to use an account that your family doesn't know about. Always try to keep a back door open. For example, for a new job. Secure your life in every possible way. Just in case something goes wrong. Make yourself independent from your family. And then if something goes wrong, you have money and you can start a new job. You can then afford an apartment. Do you understand?" Explained Zhan's father.

And Yibo understood. And he promised to start making a list today of the things he needed to do to become truly independent from his family. And Zhan promised to help him do that. Together with Zhan's parents, they discussed what Yibo should start with. Which should be his first three and therefore most important goals.

The longer they sat together and talked about it, the more Yibo relaxed. With Zhan and his parents, Yibo could be himself. He felt comfortable and understood with them. And he was glad that they wanted to help him. To him, the Xiao's are a family like he had always wanted for himself. And he is glad that they treat him like a part of their family. He knows with their help, he will be able to do anything.

A/N: Still, it would be great if any of you have ideas that we could include in this story. Right now I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas for the story. For one thing, I'm very busy at the moment and don't have much time. And for another, my head is mostly on "Private Detective Wang" story.
