TO RELIVE

Sweat trickled down from my brows, sighing to myself I gulped the last drop of water from my bottle. The screeching sound of the chalk filled the exhausted classroom. The voice of the teacher echoed..... As each second passed I busied myself focusing my eyes on the ticking clock waiting for that buzzing sound to clink in the ear, declaring the end of the academic year.

Soon all the droopy eyes raised with excitement to leave as soon as the bell rang. Everyone dispersed out of the grounds. Enthusiastically I made my way through the chaotic and cheerful laughter filled grounds.

Gushing of the river drummed in my ears, the moving train on the track was visible at a distance whistling loudly. The trees and the crops in the fields swayed to the hidden beat of the wind. Admiring the colourful butterfly fluttering in the air, I lost my tracks chasing the beauty in front of my eyes.

After coming back to my senses I walked past the evening Bazar of my town. The sun was clinging on the horizon, maybe waiting for someone to say his goodbyes. Tired, I walked into my house and tossed the bag on the sofa. Before I could take a breath, a glass of ice cold Rasna was awaiting in my mom's hands. Snatching the glass eagerly from her I gulped it all in one go. Relaxed, I switched on the t.v to enjoy my summer evening. Soon my happiness was shattered by my mother's yells to first change my uniform and freshen up .

I sat down on the sofa to watch t.v after unwillingly changing my dress. The t.v screen went blank the moment I switched it on. Cursing the current operator I went out. Halting in the backyard I found my sister under the shadow of the mango tree. After my futile attempt to pluck mangoes I sat beside my sister who was reading Tinkle. Cool breeze blew past us, the air around was sweetened by the jasmine and mango fragrance along with the aroma and jingling sound of the bells from afar.

I got on my feet and ran towards the ice cream truck leaving the iron gateway to swing. Smiles etched on tiny faces from ear to ear at the sound of the jingles. I took out two 5Rs coins and stood first in the line to buy Kulfi. Carrying the two Kulfis carefully in my hands I ran to my sister and handed her kulfi.

I licked my kulfi staring at the beautiful flock of birds in the sky. The air became light and sultry, soon the raindrops pitter -pattered on the window still.

My musings were disturbed by the loud cries of my daughter -

Ma! Maaa! Ma!

The water droplets stood still on the window.

"Yes", I replied

"Can I please have an ice cream, please?"

She pleaded with puppy eyes, how can anyone say no to this? She happily ran to buy the ice cream. I smiled at my daughter's tiny wish.....
