Chapter 1: The Rose
*Oscar's POV. It's gonna be his point of view the whole time. Hope you enjoy it!*
"Ruby?" I call out into the empty hall.
"Oscar? Why do you need her?" I turned around, seeing Yang. Her eyes were narrowed, just as if she was overprotective. I don't doubt it, Ruby is her half sister, according to Ozpin.
"Ozpin needs her. Special training, I guess."
"Ah. Is that so?"
I nod. "Why else do I need to see her this quickly?"
"Eh... I dunno. My sisterly instincts are kicking in..."
"Oh. But, do you know where she is? Ozpin really needs her."
"Check the bakery. I heard she was going with Qrow to get something sweet. She does have a sweet tooth."
"Thanks Yang." I rushed away, taking the cane from the table.
"And hey!" I turned around to see her smile. "Tell her to get me a lemon flavored cupcake."
"Got it, Yang. Lemon flavored cupcake."
I started to leave, until Blake decided to stop me. "Hey, where are you going in such a hurry?"
"Ozpin needs Ruby. I'm about to get her from the bakery."
"Oh. I see."
"Yeah, now, if you don't mind, I gotta go."
"Alright. I'm not holding you back." She goes back to reading her book.
'She's pretty into reading...' I say to myself.
'Yes, she's introverted, but she's a very good fighter. You can learn from her.' Ozpin says.
'Ozpin, I'm fine. Right now, let's get Ruby.'
I ran into the bakery, seeing Ruby looking at the sweets through the glass. Qrow was standing next to her, holding his flask of alcohol, casually drinking from it from time to time.
"Ruby?" I walk up next to her.
"Gah!" She jumps back in surprise. She had a box of doughnuts in her hands. "Oscar, you scared me." She took a deep breath and showed her usual smile, calming me down.
"Sorry, but I needed to get you."
"Why?"
"Ozpin needed you."
"Oh, okay. Let's get back then." She hands the box to Qrow, "Uncle Qrow, can you buy these?"
"Heh, sure, pipsqueak." He says, taking the box from her.
"Before I left, Yang asked for a lemon flavored cupcake."
"Oh!" Ruby says as she went to get the cupcake.
"Pipsqueak, I got it." Qrow takes the cupcake from Ruby's hands. "Go, Ozpin needs you more. Besides, Oscar wouldn't have ran from the motel to here if it wasn't important."
"Okay, Uncle!" She turns back to me, "Come on, let's go!" We both walk out of the bakery. I follow her.
'She's truly a leader.' I say in my head, sighing as well.
'Why else would I make her leader of team RWBY?'
'I can see why.'
'Stop gazing at her like that, makes me feel uncomfortable.'
'I feel the same way whenever you make me drink coffee. It's disgusting.'
'I'm sorry to say this, but you'll need to get used to it. You'll be drinking it for the rest of your life.'
"Ozpin, just stop it." I groaned. I had to do everything for him, and it feels weird. He's a part of me and my thoughts are his and some are his memories. I see flashes back and forth, green light and a woman in red. Part of her face was covered by her black hair.
"Hm? Oscar, you're alright there?" I look to Ruby, having a worried face, her eyes were scared. Unlike her usual self.
"Yeah..."
"Are you talking to Ozpin?"
"Yep."
"How is it? Having a professor in your head at all times."
"It's a bit annoying. He knows what I'm thinking, and he can take control at any time. It doesn't feel right."
"Ah. Well, you're pretty brave."
"Brave? How?"
"You're allowing him to take control, you may be afraid of not being able to control your actions, but that's pretty brave. You're gonna be okay, and you're strong."
"Thanks, I guess?"
"Heh... tell me, what does Ozpin need me for?"
"Oh, training. Says how we need to train together."
'Yes, you are a beginner, Oscar. Practice hard with her.'
"But why her?"
'Ruby needs to practice her close combat skills, and so do you.'
"Me?" Ruby turns her head back at me.
"Sorry, speaking out. I'm talking to Ozpin." 'Ozpin, stop it. You're ruining my chances.'
'Chances? With Ruby? Try and impress her team, her sister, and then her uncle. If you can manage to do that, your chances increases.'
"What does Professor Ozpin wants us to do?"
"Hm?"
"Professor Ozpin, what kind of training are we doing?"
I felt my soul being pulled back, spectating through my eyes. As I was being pulled back, I see Ozpin being pulled forward. Suddenly, I was myself, but in a dark room. "Ozpin!" I yelled. He took control over me, and I'm watching through my eyes.
"Ruby Rose, you and Oscar will be doing close combat."
"What?! Why?"
"You will need to practice hard to get it right."
"I'm not like Yang."
"A good huntsman should not only rely on the skill they are perfect. A good huntsman uses their weak skill if they strongest skill is useless against their enemy."
"So... I need to harness my close combat skill, in case if I cannot use my weapon?"
I felt myself nod, "Exactly, Ms. Rose."
"Ah. Oscar, are you doing well?"
"Yes!"
"Oscar says that he's doing well. But, pretty upset that I took control over him."
"I see... Hang in there, Oscar."
Her cheerful voice calms me down, I smile as I see her smile. "Do you want me to return control to him?"
"I would like that, just until we get back."
"Of course, Ms. Rose."
Suddenly, I was pulled forward, being blinded by light. When I would finally opened them, I see Ruby. "Oscar?"
"Yeah?"
We both walked to the house, just talking and laughing. From time to time, I heard Ozpin scoff and hands me advice. Sometimes I follow them, sometimes I don't, but Ruby didn't seem to mind it at all. Once we got back to the house, we trained. Ozpin handing me certain moves and as I try to master it, Ruby counter-attacked me.
"Hah! I did it!" She cheerful yells out, throwing her hands up in the air.
"Come on, Ruby." I looked at Yang, she was coming outside. "That's a well-done counter-attack, but Oscar could've attacked you. You shouldn't be celebrating for that until you know you won for sure."
"Yang..." Ruby says in a whiny voice.
"What? I'm right, aren't I? Let me help train you all, properly."
Two hours. Training for two hours... I was exhausted by the time Yang called it off. Ruby left me outside as I gathered my breath.
'Cheer up, Oscar. You improved.'
'Yeah? By how much? It felt like nothing.'
'You underestimate yourself. Don't doubt yourself.'
'Ozpin, I can't. They're all talented, better than I am. How can I fit in?'
'Well, unlike you, they went to a training school. Then that's when they enrolled to academies. Blake Belladonna on the other hand, was never in a training school. You can be a strong huntsman, you just gotta try. Understood, Oscar?'
I sigh, he's right, they were trained longer than I have, more experience. They also fought for their lives, fighting when Beacon Academy fell... 'Understood.'
'Good, now, Ms. Rose would like to speak to you.' His voices fades away as I gasp. I turned around to see walking up to me.
"Ruby?" I stand up, walking towards her.
"Heh, hey Oscar. You were a bit quiet..."
"Sorry, I was speaking to Ozpin."
"Man, I keep forgetting... sorry..." She scratches the back of her head, looking away from me.
"No, it's fine. What's wrong?"
"I wanted to check up on you. And to tell you that dinner's almost done."
"Thanks Ruby."
"Yep."
"Hey, Ruby? I got something to ask."
"Hm? What's wrong?"
'Oscar, what are you doing?'
'Just want to know her better, that's all.' "I heard about you being one of the youngest leaders to lead in Beacon Academy. How did you feel when you were chosen?"
"Ah..." I see her look down. "Is Ozpin listening?"
"I think so..."
"Can you tell him to not listen to me, just for a couple of minutes?"
"I can try." 'Ozpin-"
'I heard her, Oscar. Only 2 minutes.' He leaves and I was left silent.
"He's giving you 2 minutes."
"I felt honored, but afraid."
"Afraid?"
"Yes. I didn't want to be in charge of a team, too many people was looking up to me, and I didn't want to. But I do want to keep everyone safe, and I'll try to do anything to protect my friends. To keep everyone safe."
"So, that's what keeping you going? To have everyone safe?"
"Like a fairy tail."
"Wow. That's an amazing goal for you. I really hope you can achieve that."
"What's your goal in life?"
"Not being a farmer."
"You're not a farmer anymore. What's truly your goal?"
"Maybe to become a better huntsman. I'm not that good at it."
"No one is a natural-born huntsman, remember that. You get better through training over and over. Can I give another goal you might want to achieve?"
"Sure thing, Ruby."
"Another goal you should have is to become closer to your friends. Huntsman should always have allies, one of the best pieces of advice anyone should ever have."
"Thanks, Ruby. I'll take that into consideration."
"You're welcome, Oscar. Whenever you're ready, come inside to eat." She walks off, I sigh as I see her leave.
'You think you can be that smooth, Oscar?'
'What? No, I wouldn't do that, ever. But, I think-'
'You think you're attracted to her? Excuse me, but her talents speak more than her looks.'
'I'm not looking at her looks, Ozpin. Her personality, it's different from what I expected.'
'Hm, you're right. But still, I was her teacher. Keep those dreams to yourself.'
'How?! You're the one that reads everything in my head, you have complete control!'
'Right, I forgot about that. I'll let you have control every night, so try to dream your fantasies in your sleep.'
'Thank you.'
'I believe you can do better what you demonstrated in your dreams...'
'Ozpin!'
He chuckles, 'Sorry, my bad.'
"Oscar! Dinner's done!" I hear Ruby's voice shout from inside.
"Coming!" I yell back to her. She's unexpected, that's for sure.
