Chapter Twelve
Virgil never ended up texting Logan. It wasn't that he didn't want to. No, he wanted to see Logan again more than anything. But his anxiety mixed with his guilt from scaring his parents so badly kept him from taking the step to actually reach out to the boy.
Unbeknownst to Virgil, Logan had been waiting for him to text. He kept his phone with him at all times, hoping to anything that the purple haired boy would finally remember to contact him. He was going downhill, and the idea that even Virgil gave up on him made him fall even further.
Both boys were an absolute wreck when they ran into each other at the same coffee shop they had sat in together a month prior. Virgil had been rushing into the shop to get out of the rain when he ran directly into somebody in the doorway. "Sorry," Virgil muttered, waiting for the person to step aside. He hadn't expected for the person to ask, "Virgil?"
His head immediately snapped up, locking eyes with the boy who'd been occupying his thoughts for the past month. Now that he was finally in front of him, Virgil was terrified. He just stared into Logan's wide blue eyes, frozen in his spot. After a moment, Logan ushered Virgil inside the shop. Virgil nodded stiffly as he allowed Logan to lead him into the shop and over to an empty table. "Are you alright?" Logan finally asked. Virgil nodded. "S-sorry, just... surprised to see you," Virgil managed out, willing his growing anxiety to lessen. "O-oh, I apologize. If you'd like me to go, I can-" Logan started. "No, no. I didn't mean it in a bad way. I just didn't expect to see you," Virgil admitted truthfully. "Oh. Okay," Logan responded. A tense silence fell between the pair, neither quite sure what to say. Finally, Logan swallowed his nerves and voiced the thoughts that had been plaguing him for the past month. "Why didn't you ever text me?" he asked. When Virgil hesitated to answer, Logan immediately added, "It is quite alright if you do not want to answer. I was simply wondering." Virgil took a breath. "No, it's okay. To be honest...I really wanted to text you. It's just, well, I have pretty bad anxiety and I was kind of freaked out that you'd tell me to leave you alone or yell at me for bothering you or something," Virgil admitted, purposely omitting the part about terrifying his mother's by staying out too long with the boy in front of him. "Oh. Well, I feel rather foolish," Logan said truthfully. "What? Why?" Virgil asked. "I...believed that you no longer wished to associate with me," Logan said softly, his eyes staying locked on the table. Virgil looked at him with a concerned gaze. "Lo, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel like that," Virgil responded. "It is quite alright. I am relieved to hear that I was incorrect, however," Logan said, a soft smile forming on his face as he finally locked eyes with the boy across from him. Virgil smirked back, relieved that things seemed to be okay between him and Logan. "Seriously though, I'm sorry for not reaching out. I really do want to still be friends. I mean, as long as you want to," Virgil rambled slightly. "Yes, I would like to remain in contact as well," Logan responded, effectively silencing the anxious boy. "Cool," Virgil responded, letting out a sigh of relief. "Well, I did not mean to intrude on you, so I should probably be on my way," Logan said as he stood from his seat. "No! I mean, um, you didn't intrude or anything. A-also, you don't have to go if you don't want. U-unless you don't want to or you're too busy or-" Virgil rambled. "I'd love to stay if you do not mind," Logan responded with a genuine smile, sitting down once more. Virgil breathed out a laugh. "I don't mind at all," he muttered, earning an amused smirk from Logan. Virgil flushed slightly before standing from his seat. "I'm going to get some coffee. Do you want anything?" Virgil asked. Logan shook his head, prompting Virgil to turn and approach to counter.
A few moments later, Virgil returned to the table with a mug in his hand. "What did you get?" Logan asked. "Just black coffee," Virgil responded, half expecting Logan to go into a full rant about how boring and dull Virgil was. However, Logan just smiled softly. "Good choice. I also enjoy my coffee without any of the frilly ingredients added," Logan responded. Virgil grinned softly at his words, hiding it behind his mug. Logan noticed, though.
The pair continued to talk and catch up, hardly noticing as the time practically flew by. An hour later, the pair finally stood from the table and walked toward the door. "It was very nice to see you again, Virgil," Logan said. "Yeah, you too," Virgil responded, a genuine smirk on his face. "Could I get your phone number? I believe that we would both enjoy to stay in contact. However, I would not want to force you to, as they say, 'make the first move', so I am more than willing to take on that task," Logan explained. Virgil would never admit it, but Logan's thoughtfulness in that moment nearly brought tears to his eyes. "Y-yeah, sure. Let me see your phone," Virgil mumbled, taking Logan's phone and entering his contact. Virgil then handed the phone back to Logan, who slid the device into his pocket before looking back up at the slightly shorter boy. "Well, I have greatly enjoyed this. I will reach out to you soon," Logan said as he began to walk off. "Yeah, sounds good. Bye, Lo," Virgil said with a small wave. "Goodbye, Virgil," Logan responded with a soft smile before turning and walking away. Virgil watched him leave before walking home in the opposite direction, unable to wipe the giddy smile off of his face the whole way back.
