Chapter Ten
Logan was awoken in the middle of the night by the boy next to him thrashing wildly. Logan shot up immediately, turning toward the sobbing boy. "S-stop!" Virgil yelled loudly. Logan sat frozen, unsure of what to do. "Please! No more," the boy sobbed out. Logan couldn't bare to watch the boy in this much pain, so he shook him awake frantically. Virgil screamed as his eyes shot open. He pulled at Logan's hands frantically, needing the get away from his grasp. "P-please stop," Virgil whimpered as he scrambled away from Logan as fast as he could. "Virgil-" Logan started. "I'm sorry Michael, please no more," he cried out. Logan's heart stopped. "No, Virge, I'm not Michael. I'm Logan." Virgil stilled as he looked up at the man in front of him. "L-Lo?" he asked brokenly. "Yes, Virgil, it's just me. Just Logan." Virgil whimpered as he ran forward, burying his face in Logan's chest. Logan wrapped his arms protectively around the boy. "Please don't let him get me," Virgil said through his sobs. Logan's arms tightened. "He'll never touch you again. I'll protect you." Virgil continued to sob into Logan's chest, gripping the back of his shirt tightly. "N-no more," he whimpered. "No more, Virgil. I'll keep you safe," Logan said softly. Logan's form grip and reassuring words eventually helped Virgil to calm down from his panic. "I'm sorry, Lo," he said, his voice cracking. "None of that. You did nothing wrong," Logan said, running his fingers through Virgil's hair. Virgil sighed and leaned into the man's touch. The pair sat in silence until Virgil could barely keep his eyes open. "You need to rest, Virgil," Logan said softly. Virgil shook his head quickly. "Why not?" Logan asked with concern. "Don't want the nightmares to come back," Virgil said softly. Logan opened his arms. "Come here, Virge." Virgil crawled into Logan's arms, laying his head on his chest. "I'll be right here if you have another nightmare. I'll take care of you," Logan whispered. Virgil smiled softly. "Thanks, Lo. That means a lot."
Thirty minutes later, Virgil was still wide awake. He was terrified to say the least. He didn't want to relive everything that had happened to him. But he was also so exhausted that he could cry. He hesitated for a moment before whispering, "Lo?" Logan's eyes sleepily opened, looking at the boy in his arms. "Is everything alright?" Logan asked, half awake. "Oh, I didn't know you were asleep, I'm so sorry, it was stupid anyway," Virgil rambled out. Logan rubbed the boy's back comfortingly. "Nonsense. What is it?" Virgil swallowed before replying. "I can't sleep. Could you...sing for me?" Virgil asked softly. "Unless you don't want to, that's perfectly okay," he added quickly. Logan smiled softly. "I must admit, I am not much of a singer. However, I will do my best." Virgil closed his eyes as Logan began singing a soft tune, quickly falling asleep to the man's raspy yet rich low voice.
Logan didn't sleep that after that. Every time he would start to doze off, he would think about Virgil's frightened expression or his horrified pleas. He needed to stay awake in case Virgil needed him again. When Virgil woke nearly six hours later, Logan was still awake, albeit exhausted. "Good morning, Lo," Virgil said in his deep morning voice. "Morning," Logan mumbled back. Virgil looked up at Logan's exhausted features and furrowed his eyebrows. "Did you get any sleep, Lo?" Virgil asked softly. Logan shook his head reluctantly. "Why not?" Virgil pressed. "I didn't want you to have another nightmare and have to handle it on your own," Logan responded, struggling to keep his eyes open. "Oh, no. Logan, you didn't have to stay up for me," Virgil said worriedly. Logan smiled softly as he placed his hand on Virgil's cheek. "I promised I'd protect you, didn't I?" Virgil chuckled fondly. "Still, you should've slept. Come on, you need to sleep for a bit," Virgil said as he carefully pushed Logan onto his back. Virgil was slightly shocked when Logan opened his arms and looked up at him expectantly. Virgil wordlessly laid down next to Logan, allowing him to lay on his chest. Virgil wrapped an arm around the boy, holding him close. In mere minutes, Logan was fast asleep in Virgil's arms. He looked down at the sleeping boy fondly, brushing a stray hair out of his face. Virgil's gaze lingered for a moment longer before he shut his eyes, enjoying the serenity of the moment.
A few hours later, Logan began to stir in Virgil's arms. He smiled softly as he registered the fingers combing through his hair, humming lightly. "Good morning, Lo. Sleep well?" Virgil asked softly. Logan opened his eyes and looked up at the boy. "I did, thank you for asking." Virgil grinned at the boy. "Hey Lo? Would it be alright if we made some breakfast? I'm super hungry." Logan froze. Can't eat, can't eat, can't eat. Virgil took notice of the boy's frightened state and tightened his arms around him. "I know it's scary. It's okay, I'm not going to make you eat anything. Only if you want to, okay?" Virgil said lowly. Logan visibly relaxed, nodding in response to Virgil's statement. The pair crawled out of bed and made their way to the kitchen, Logan trailing behind ever so slightly. "Do you guys have any bread?" Virgil asked. Logan nodded, walking over to their pantry and pulling out the loaf of bread. "Thanks, Lo. I'm gonna make some toast. Do you want any?" Virgil asked. Logan swallowed before shaking his head and looking at the floor. "Hey, it's okay," Virgil said softly. Logan looked up at him with a saddened look but nodded. Virgil turned away from the boy and made his way over to the toaster, putting in two slices of bread. As the bread toasted, Virgil turned back to Logan. "Do you have any jam?" Virgil asked, prompting Logan to open the fridge and pull out a jar of Crofters. "Here you are," Logan said as he handed the jar to Virgil. When the toast was ready, Virgil placed the bread on a plate and spread the jam on both slices. Logan looked at the toast longingly. Crofters was his favorite.
Virgil noticed Logan's expression. He felt a tug in his chest at the sight. "Hey Lo? If you want you can have a bite." Logan looked up at Virgil with a conflicted expression. "It can just be one bite if you want. A really small one," Virgil offered. Logan hesitated for a moment longer before nodding reluctantly. Virgil handed him one of the slices, grinning as Logan practically groaned at the taste. "Feel free to take another bite, Lo," Virgil said encouragingly. Logan shakily took another bite, savoring the taste of his favorite jam. Virgil began eating his slice of toast, finishing it rather quickly. He looked up at Logan and couldn't help but smile as he noticed that he had eaten about half of the slice. Logan swallowed the bite that he had taken when his eyes widened. He hadn't meant to eat that much. "C-can't eat anymore," Logan said shakily. "Hey, that's perfectly okay," Virgil said softly as he took the half eaten toast from Logan and put it back on the plate.
Logan's mind was attacking him. He needed to get the food out of his body as fast as he could. "I-I have to go to the b-bathroom," he stuttered out, moving toward the bathroom when he felt a strong pair of arms around his waist. "Come on, Lo. Let's go sit on the couch, okay?" Virgil comforted. Logan struggled against his grip. "N-no. Please Virgil. I need-" "Shh, it's okay Logan. I know it's hard. It's okay," Virgil cooed as he held the boy tighter. Logan thrashed in his hold, panic filling his veins. Virgil didn't budge, though. He just held the boy tightly and reassured him until he relaxed in his hold. Logan couldn't stop the sobs that wracked his body. "It's okay, Lo. I've got you," Virgil whispered. Logan clung to Virgil tightly. "I-I'm sorry," Logan choked out. "Please don't apologize, Lo. I'm so, so proud of you for eating something," Virgil said softly, holding the shaking boy close to him. Logan continued to sob into Virgil's chest until he was left a shaking mess.
Virgil kept his arms tightly wrapping around the boy, determined to hold his shattering pieces together.
