Chapter Four

TW- Violence

Logan and Virgil both locked eyes and shared a slightly nervous glance before turning back to the man waiting at Virgil's front door. Logan couldn't explain exactly why, but seeing Michael set a flame inside of him that fueled an overwhelming sense of anger. Logan let go of Virgil and walked quickly toward the man. "Excuse me, Michael was it? I believe that Virgil has asked you multiple times to leave him alone, am I correct?" Michael scoffed in Logan's face. "He doesn't know what he wants. But it's obvious, he wants me. He's just too stupid to realize right now that he deserves a lot more than you." Logan's eyes lit up in rage as he took another step forward. "Listen. I may not be much. I know that I'm not the most attractive. I know that I'm just a nerd. Hell, I know that Virgil deserves someone much better than me." This caused Virgil to look up quickly and watch Logan intently. Even if it was all an act, no one had ever spoken so highly about him before. Logan continued his rage-induced rant. "I'm certainly nothing special. But at least I'm not a complete coward who hurts and manipulates those who care about me in order to boost my own twisted ego. Because that is all that you are. A cruel, heartless, unworthy coward."

And that was when Michael's fist connected with Logan's face, just below his eye.

Virgil gasped audibly and rushed forward to a now cowering Logan. "Oh my god. Logan, are you okay?" Virgil touched Logan's arm lightly. "Virgil, go inside." Virgil looked at Logan incredulously. "Are you kidding? I'm not leaving you alone." Before Logan could answer,  Michael walked forward quickly and shoved Logan to the ground. "Virgil, please go inside," Logan whimpered. Virgil stood still in shock, completely unable to respond or move. It wasn't until Logan yelled out, "Virgil! Go inside!" that Virgil snapped back into reality. His eyes met Logan's fearful and slightly teary eyes. He felt his heart break at the sight. He held Logan's gaze until he felt a tight grip on his arm. "You are mine, do you understand me?" Virgil looked at the ground and whimpered lightly, shaking his head. Michael lifted his hand to strike Virgil as he had so many times before. Virgil braced himself for a blow that never came. Instead, the grip left his arm immediately. Virgil turned just in time to see Logan on top of Michael on the ground, attempting to hold him down. Logan had quiet tears falling down his cheeks now, as he yelled out, "Virgil, I'm begging you. I'll be okay, please get inside." Virgil was about to go into the house willingly when he witnessed something that broke his heart.

Michael pushed Logan off of him and hit him so hard in the stomach that Logan audibly screamed out in pain. His sounds of anguish caused Virgil's heart rate to quicken rapidly. This was all his fault. If he wouldn't have forced Logan to walk home with him, none of this would have happened. Virgil could feel his panic begin to close in on him. He shook violently and fell to his knees, unable to catch his breath. Michael continued to physically assault the boy below him. Logan couldn't do anything but cry out weakly every time he was struck. He could taste the blood in his mouth and he felt himself reaching the brink of unconsciousness. So this is how I'm going to die, Logan thought sadly. At least Virgil is safe. Logan smiled softly at that. However, that smile was soon knocked off his face as he felt a hand on his throat. Logan knew this was the end for him.

Until a car pulled up quickly and two women ran out toward the three boys, yelling at the top of their lungs. Neither Logan nor Virgil could make out what they were saying due to each of their states of panic. Logan rolled over on his side and gasped heavily as Michael was pulled off of him quickly. After somewhat regaining his breath, Logan looked up to survey the scene around him. One of the women was currently yelling in Michael's face and threatening to call the police while the other was holding Virgil tightly and trying to calm him down. Logan couldn't help but feel guilty for Virgil's panic. He had provoked Michael after all. While it was warranted, he still felt as if he were the reason for Virgil's anguish. While lamenting over this, he locked eyes with Virgil. Before he could react further, Virgil moved toward him quickly and hugged him carefully, burying his face in Logan's neck. "Thank you so much," Virgil whispered.

Logan had never been one for affection, especially physical affection. It usually made him rather uncomfortable. However, with Virgil clinging to him now, Logan couldn't help but wrap his arms around him tightly and hold him close.
