Chapter Four: The Engagement
Heeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! So funny thing about my update schedule, not consistent. So I may or may not be publishing another chapter soon. And, wow, guess what, I normally only do one a month in no order whatsoever! So enjoy!-😈
When Janus imagined his engagement, it was nothing like this. For one, he expected Roman to propose and for another he expected to be in love with the person he was engaged to. He didn't even get to pick out the ring, which he found rather annoying.
Yes, Janus was aware he was being petty, but since there were very few things he had under his control, he was going to complain about the one thing he could. He hadn't seen Logan since that night. Apparently Patton was very old fashioned (shocker) and didn't want the two to meet before the engagement. Although Janus was pretty sure Patton wanted to control their meeting, since Logan was clearly clever enough to figure things out and stop them.
If Janus wasn't annoyed with Patton, he would be impressed with how well he orchestrated everything. The manipulation, the control, it was all very impressive. It was methodical and precise. Like Janus normally was.
"I can't wait for you to meet my son. You'll love him!" Janus refrained from snorting. Roman was the only person he'd ever love. But he had to admit, Logan didn't seem like a terrible person on a whole. He would make a good friend, in better circumstances. "Look, there he is." Logan walked through the door quickly, immaculate as the night the pair met. He avoided Patton's gaze.
"Hello father." Patton surged forward and hugged Logan, who stiffly obliged.
"Look, I have your husband! See, isn't he much better than-" Janus missed the end, Patton whispering it in Logan's ear. He paled.
"Of course father." He remained still, not moving away, though clearly he wanted to.
"Oh and I forgot! He gets to meet your papa too," Patton exclaimed. Janus's eyes darted. Patton Heart was married? He glanced at Logan, only to see his gaze become more panicked.
"What?" Logan asked, turbulent emotion underneath his words.
"Yes, isn't it exciting? I know your papa was so happy to meet your future husband," Patton cheered. "I'm going to go get him, feel free to get to know each other!"
When Patton finally left, Logan cursed under his breath, pacing in a frenzied panic. Janus finally interrupted.
"You have a father?" Janus asked stupidly. Logan stopped staring at him exasperatedly.
"Of course I do." Janus shook his head, rolling his eyes at his own stupid question.
"I meant another one." Logan sighed.
"Yes."
"But I never heard of him." Logan leaned on the table, sitting down in exhaustion and stress. He held his head in his hands, muttering to himself.
"No, you wouldn't have." Janus looked around the room, scanning for portraits of anyone who might resemble Logan's other father. He spotted none, only another image of Patton. Janus was tempted to grab a knife and destroy it, but now was not the time. "Not even the servants know of him, and he's been here for almost thirty years."
Janus turned around, stopping fiddling his hat in surprise.
"How is that possible?" Logan smiled wryly.
"My family's always been remarkably good at keeping secrets." Before Janus could question further, the doors started to open again. Logan stood up, masking his emotions again with little effort. Patton re-entered, still beaming, holding another man by the hand.
"Have you two been getting to know each other better?" Patton asked cheerily. Logan and Janus didn't respond, staring at him mutely. Patton giggled to break the silence. "Oh you two will warm up to each other eventually. Anyway, Emi darling, here's Janus Lyre, our son's future husband! Isn't he perfect for him?"
Finally, the pair of men stand close enough for Janus to see. The man referred to as Emi, definitely is the reason for most of Logan's looks. If Janus didn't look hard enough, he'd swear they were twins. He wears much less formal clothing than Patton though, in a deep blue suit with a small pink flower in his hair, the only other shred of color not matching the crest of the Hart family.
The man shrugs.
"I don't know his personality dear." His gaze remains planted firmly on the ground, expression neutral. Patton huffs.
"Emile darling, you aren't even looking." The tone sounds pleasant enough to Janus, but judging by the frightened reaction of both Logan and Emile, it is anything but. Emile looks up at Janus, but the gaze slides away to Logan, who is stiffly frozen again. He gently pulls Patton off, and comes up to Logan and Janus. To Janus's surprise, Logan hugs Emile of his own volition.
Janus watches the pair from afar, glancing at Patton who watches his son and spouse with a sharp gaze, before walking up to Emile and Logan, separating them.
"Alright, time to go darling!" Patton says, grabbing Emile, immediately making Logan shut back down. "I hope when I return there are rings on fingers!" He says sing-songy, as he runs off, dragging Emile through the doors. Janus turns to Logan, sighing.
"Let's get this over with."
