8. The truth's not always bitter!
Our stories were different, yet all this while I kept on thinking, just because I was married to Noah, we shared a story that was to go a long way. I was not a fan of what I did 2 years back either, but I needed my time, didn't I? And Noah? How could he just walk off me? Was he really going to take his revenge this way? Was he really so inconsiderate of me that he didn't even care to tell me about his plan?
It was all my fault to not keep in contact after disappearing and obviously, it will always be my fault to make him feel alien and insult his family by leaving like that, but whatever may be the issue, it was his choice too. He wanted me to leave too, didn't he? I was pretty sure I had put kerosene in the already sparking fire between our relationship after losing my wedding ring today.
I had lost something that was never mine in the first place. It was true what they said about knowing the worth of something after losing it. I saw Noah hold Patricia's hand and my heart twitched. He had never been that firm to me, but with her, he seemed to have emotions.
"They sure make the best couple." Someone gossiped behind my back.
Why am I always to overhear these stupid comments?
"Absolutely. They complete each other." Another one said.
"I heard Noah is going to propose Patricia." The girl behind me clapped.
"I think he would look better with one of the Renaldi twins," Kerry said sitting with that group.
Just with the noises, I had been trying to make out what the hell were these girls talking about.
Lele also joined them, "In my opinion, Riri would also suit him."
I rolled my eyes trying to avoid the debate about which girl would suit my husband where I was not even the last girl on the list.
"C'mon guys. Look at them. Patricia suits him well. But on the other hand, what I saw this morning makes me think twice before shipping Noah with her. I mean he sure does go along well with Patricia but he definitely belongs beside Miael. They are just perfect." One of them said mentioning me. I turned to face them and all of them hushed back.
How can Noah belong beside me?
"Noah! Wait! You can't do this to me! Noah!" Patricia yelled calling out for him. I turned to look at them again only to find Noah leave heartlessly while she kept on pleading him to return. I was confused. My eyes were bouncing over both of them one by one still trying to understand what just happened.
"Noah is such a badass!" Eleanor said jumping on her feet as she rolled on to my table. She was sitting beside their table while the drama happened and I was sure she had heard the whole conversation.
"What?" I asked out of confusion.
She smiled cheerfully turning her face into awe, "I wonder what made him so heartless? You did a great deed in your past life, trust me!" She giggled holding my hand.
"What? I did what? I did what when?" My brain was in a muddle of shocks and crazy thoughts. Why was this girl being to suspense oriented?
"Miss. Renaldi?" A peon called out from the Cafeteria door just when Eleanor was about to drop the spoilers I had missed.
"Yes." We both answered in chores. Just some Renaldi things.
"Miss. Miael Renadli?" He stated clearly.
As I simply put down my head remembering my real surname, "That would be me," I replied.
"Mr Martin wants to see you in his office." He conveyed the message.
Oh damn! Uncle Martin? How could I forget about him in the first place?
"Sissy, you're officially doomed. I told you that the ring was bad luck." Eleanor said tapping on my shoulder.
I took a deep breath before following the peon. With each step, I counted all the breaths I was left with before getting murdered by my Father-in-law. I had literally brought shame to his family right a minute after joining it and now I was finally back to pay for my deeds and that too without the wedding ring.
"What did you do? He seemed pretty furious?" The peon asked scaring me even more.
I frowned and hesitated before answering his question, "How would I know?" Well, I questioned back.
"Don't worry, he won't punish you much today." He said with a wide smile, "His dogs are sick so he wouldn't leave them after you."
My legs became rebellious and denied to walk any further. I hated dogs and I had forgotten the Martin's had the best breeds of dogs to punish the people who offended them. I somehow managed to crawl to his office and waited to control my racing heart, I didn't want to sound nervous in front of him, but my backbone was already cracking because of the severe tension, and that is when, the messenger of my death, my grim reaper, the peon unlocked the door to hell for me.
"Mr. Martin?" I mumbled taking a few steps inside. I slowly peeked in opening my eyes as the scent of rain filled my heart with butterflies.
"Yes, Mrs. Martin." He whispered from behind. I turned instantly on his voice, my eyes wide as Eleanor's dawn, while his smirk wider than Mimin's oceans.
Why was he here? Oh wait, was this my first one on one encounter with my husband?
I was so shocked, I had forgotten to breathe for a while, that is when his forward marching steps towards me reminded me, he was just a step away from my face. I tried to speak but his hand reached down my waist as he pulled me up and placed me on his desk firmly.
"Noah?" It came out as a question, as always.
I was actually in his cabin. There were his pictures, his trophies, his medals, and his paintings. He leaned closer to my face as I clutched my eyes shut denying to believe this was all real. I heard him chuckle faintly as he moved away. I peeped in through the corner of my eyes to find him glaring at my face while leaning to the door on his back.
Gosh, he was hot.
"Why did you call me here?" I asked hesitantly, finally admitting to the situation.
"I wanted to look at you. Peacefully." He said without blinking as his eyes continued to torture my face with their intense gaze.
"But Patricia?" I asked nervously again.
"Why would you bring her up at this moment?" He questioned back walking towards me. He stood right in front of me while I continued to get nervous for no reason.
"She said...you..." I was trying to speak when he caught me off guard. He took my hand and slipped a ring in the same place where my wedding ring was. So it did bother him, me losing the ring was a matter of concern to him as well. The shivering guilt in my dry tears made it hard for me to directly look at it, so, I gently rubbed it and that is when the confusion grew over me before a wide smile crawled all over my face.
"My ring!" I exclaimed.
"Patricia found it near the bleachers. It might have fallen when you saved me from the cross ball. She thought I brought it to propose her." He explained calmly.
Huh? Did I just mistakenly doubt my husband for betrayal?
"You mean, you were not going to propose her in the first place? It was a misunderstanding?" I asked looking at the ring in embarrassment.
"You really are silly." He said lifting my face up with his index finger. "I'm a married man, stop forgetting the facts." He added with a smile.
Did Noah Martin just smile?
"But then why did she get the wrong idea? I'm pretty sure it's impossible for anyone to think such a big blunder about you, even for me." I questioned again stupidly.
"Because of you, obviously." He shoved his hands in his pocket, "because once in a while I used to ask her whereabouts as you asked me to do. After all, she was your best friend once. Besides, I don't get distracted easily." He said pinching my nose.
"That Patricia sure is a... I didn't see anything, I didn't, I didn't." Liam shuttered barging inside his cabin and closing his eyes on seeing us together. Noah rolled his eyes moving away swiftly. I jolted down the desk and stood aside at a distance almost getting invisible due to embarrassment.
"What do you want?" Noah scratched his neck. Wow, he could get anxious too.
Liam opened his eyes partially and then completely smiling like a fool. What was he imagining?
"Mother asked me to tell you, she invited the Renaldi's over for lunch. But seems you're going to enjoy it in your cabin so I'll tell her not to wait." Liam teased.
"Shut up and tell her we'll be there." Noah tried to scare him but Liam was one of his weaknesses. It wasn't easy for him to scold Liam.
"Alright, I'll tell her you're bringing your snacks along!" He said pointing towards me before rushing out as Noah threatened him with a raised brow.
"Don't mind him," Noah said rolling his eyes. He unzipped his jacket before sitting on his chair.
"Yes, don't mind me, just tell me when will you move in? I'll need to make some changes." Liam teased again through the doors raising a matter of concern which could be the reason behind this sudden invitation. That's why they tell you to plan everything before running away and especially before returning too.
"Damn it!" I mumbled.
"I'll give you a ride home. Don't worry. You can move in whenever you're ready. No hurries." Noah assured. Why was he being so sweet again?
I had a habit of breaking the heart of people who were too sweet to me.
I didn't even know how long I was staying here, and they were talking about me moving into Martin's house.
"Okay, I'll get my luggage," I said taking him off guard.
He locked the door again which he had just opened a mini second ago hearing the term luggage.
"My luggage is still here, I came here right from the airport. I need to take it to my parent's house as well. But it's good to know where you're at." I giggled unlocking the door and walking out leaving him all awestruck.
Well, it was true, nobody except for me knew the art of surprising Noah. I suddenly agreed to marry him, then suddenly decided not to, then walked down the aisle to say "no" and ended up saying "I do." Ran away right after marrying him and then showed up out of the blue with the wedding ring still on my finger. Noah never really cared about the worldly stuff until I was dropped into his life. He was completely focused on being the best when finally people found out, the scent of old books was his only distraction.
"Mieal." He called from behind, still hanging to the door of his office. "Eleanor and Jade are still in their classes, would you like to have some coffee till they get free?"
I smiled walking back towards him, "Sure, where?"
He simply slipped inside his cabin gesturing for me to follow him. He walked past his desk and right behind the bookshelf, I found it. I knew he was hiding something in his cabin.
"So that's why you missed your lunches at the cafeteria." I folded my arms following him inside his room.
"Well, not exactly." He answered closing the door. "Earlier, I used to skip meals or eat with Dad or your father discussing the regular chorus of the school but thanks to you, I got promoted the year we got married. I became the Director of the Martin group of Academia."
"What?" I sat on the couch, while he placed his jacket on his bed. "That's cool, Mr Billionaire."
"I don't earn that much though." He smiled turning on the coffee machine. "Just enough to support my famous wife if she plans on returning home." He added putting coffee beans into one the pots.
"Your wife must be lucky." I teased getting up to take a tour of his room. He didn't reply, so I supposed he sure was lucky.
I loved the greyish colour of the walls. He was obsessed with that shade since we were kids. The room wasn't huge, but I was fine. A bed, a couch, a television, a refrigerator, and his favourite, coffee machine. He even had a closet attached to his bathroom. It was like a mini house in itself.
"It's beautiful, I mean your place." I smiled taking the cup of coffee from his hand.
He returned the favour sitting on the couch, "Glad, you liked it."
"But, it's a little old school." I teased sitting on the bed, which was placed parallel to the couch.
"I know. Everything that's mine is old school." He laughed making fun of me. Obviously, he didn't intend it directly, but indirectly he surely cursed me for being too old-school for my stupid decisions.
"Ha Ha Ha, very funny." I pouted sipping the dark tase of latte, ah, it had been a while. "It still tastes the same."
I smiled. Weirdly, it was a comfortable aura around him. I had hoped it wouldn't be too awkward, but it rather seemed too careful and peaceful.
"Not many things changed." His jawline stiffened a little. His eyes were glued to the coffee cup, more like trying to avoid me. I was sure he had a lot of questions, but he rather chose to stay quiet. I was thankful, at least he wasn't doing what everyone else was. Bombarding me with questions whose answers were still missing from my memory.
"So, you got quite famous." He added after a pause of a few minutes. My lips curled up a little realising he had been keeping a track over me anyway. But he wasn't completely right, after all, above everything else, I was once Mieal Renaldi, the eldest Renaldi twin.
"Nope. I was always popular." I flipped my hair, crossing my legs over each other. My long skirt swiftly outlined above my ankles.
He gently shook his hair, almost not smiling, but I knew how wicked he was, even though he acted saint.
He sipped one last time from his cup and we literally just talked 4-5 lines between a 10 minutes coffee break. As he walked away, taking the cup from my hand too, I noticed his abs had grown crazily more. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to allow my eyes to have their desired feast, but I was sure if they got caught, things would get nasty and I wouldn't want that, at all!
"I think we should leave?" It came out more like a question from me.
He picked up his jacket and politely held the door open for me, "after you, Mrs. Martin."
"Thank you." I walked out. He was the only one who addresses me like that. Did I enjoy it? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not.
After all, he was the great Noah Martin and I was now his wife, the great Mieal Renaldi— now Martin.
