39. Something's off

"Where are you headed?" Lele asked following me while I was following Liam. She was wearing heels and luckily I was in my sneakers which made it easier for me to follow the long-legged beast. "I don't know why but I have a gut feeling I'm somehow involved." I hurriedly said running after Liam.

It was a lot to see in a single day but yet again just a few nights back we had witnessed the "truth-revelation" of the year ceremony so nothing seemed to overlook it.

"What's going on?" Liam growled jumping into the scene and pushing Pete away from Noah. They literally were fighting with all their might. Ryan came forward to hold Pete from falling when suddenly Jade held my hand and brought me between them. What did I do now? "This girl right here is not someone we would allow you to mess with. Mind that Bennette!" He exclaimed almost throwing me to Liam who wrapped his arms around my waist holding me from stumbling further.

"And nor is she someone you're allowed to mess with, Martin," Mieal yelled parting the crowd that had gathered to witness this heroic battle, "My sisters are not for you boys to fool with no matter what. Get yourself a grip on your thoughts and get away from us." She added pulling me out from Liam's arms. I held a good hold onto my sneakers turning to Mieal. She was horrified and I could feel it from her shivering composure but just for justifying that we don't belong to anyone, she stood up against her husband and his stupid brothers for me. "Let's go," I said holding her hand.

"Wait!" Liam yelled blocking Ryan from coming my way, "If you are trying to court her for her surname, trust me, Ryan, she means the entire world to me since childhood and nobody dares to harm her. She is the only one who stood beside me every time I was in danger and she took me out, so make sure, you keep your bad intentions away from her because I've got her back."

My heart sank. Wait. What?

"No way!" Lele's squealed was followed by the howling and shouting of the crowd who could not decipher the meaning of what Liam had just said and...trust me, it wasn't just them. Even I had no clue what the hell was going on?  "I need to go," I mumbled holding Mieal's hand and walked out of the battlefield with my heart partly wounded and partly paranoid.

"Don't let it affect you," Mieal said as we got into the car, "There's something off about all these coincidences and I will find it out no matter what. Just stay close to them but don't let your heart get in the way."

She was right. Although Mieal was not legally married to Noah, she had clearly fallen for him by now and although there are no love ties between Mimin and Jade, she is bonded to him for life by just a few papers. Something like this can't be just a coincidence especially when you pair it with the bet that holds Liam and me together. Something's off. "Don't worry too much, let's go." Mieal parked the car as we reached back to the Martin house. Mimin was already back with her driver so basically, things were going to get a little messier now.

I took a shower before walking to Liam's room for clarification on what was he planning when I found him sleeping as soundly as possible. Exploring his room, I realised he seldom studied maybe that's why the crayon set was still intact and so were the markers. Markers? Hmm.., although he was a troublemaker yet let's not forget the fact that I taught him the basics.

When dinner was served half of us were not in any mood to talk until Liam walked out rubbing his eyes and yawning. He sat beside me as usual but I changed my seat quickly as I wanted to get the best angle to see his pretty face. "Can I pass, I'm sleepy." He mumbled laying his head on the table before Jade pulled it up by the hair, "What the hell happened to your face?" Jade was the first one to laugh.

I gasped my mouth pretending to be shocked, "Oh no, my sweet little lion, who did this to you?" I said holding up my phone's front camera to his face. Everyone had already guessed but who would miss a chance to pull the legs of that troublemaker. Well, this trick did lighten up the heated room.

"You are so dead, Renaldi." He rolled his eyes getting up from his seat and rushing after me because I'm faster than him and it's impossible for him to catch me. "Riri, stop!" He growled wiping his face his hands repeatedly.

I climbed up the stairs and rushed back to my room but I had forgotten the keys downstairs so I had to rush back to his room and lock it from inside. Ah, the satisfaction of locking Liam Martin outside his room!

"Eleanor!" Liam banged the door to his room as I danced a little trying to fool around with him.

I heard him call my name a few times but my un-hearing skills were way too good for this kind of situation. That's when I saw something, tricky as ever. Liam had never had a shelf in his room when we were kids, but now he had one, that was not the tricky part though. The tricky part was it has all the books that I've read till today.

"Looks like someone has developed some taste." I smiled slyly picking out my favourite poetry rant book by Raunak Agarwal, Heart Broken Musings.

The author has a different perspective on life altogether and I was pretty sure this idiot has no clue what he has been talking about. I placed it back without opening it and picked up another picture book lying on the bottom shelf.

It was one that we drew when we were kids, together. I flipped through the pages to notice things getting weirder. Every page had a drawing of us, on every page, we were a couple and on every page, he was guarding me. Why?

No, why does Liam still have it? Why is it on a new shelf? I kept the book away getting frustrated. It wasn't because I was developing feelings for him, no, absolutely not. It was because what I was sensing was more of a nightmare than a daydream.

I was about to leave when a file caught my attention. What a weird day! Even files are catching my attention now.

Linkton High, 1984.

It read. I thought to pick it up but it was under a pile of other books and Liam had been knocking way too much so I decided to let it be and leave quietly.

"You bitch!" He folded his arms glaring at me step out peacefully.

I copied his action leaning against the door, "Yes, Liam Martin." I politely smiled before running away again and rushing back to hide behind my sisters.

Miael seemed hassled up. She wasn't talking to Noah, not even looking at him, I mean.

"Sit and eat," Mimin ordered tapping the seat beside her. I nodded and quickly took shelter.

Even though my mouth was filled with exotic food, my mind was still swirling around Liam's bookshelf. There was something wrong, I was just not able to guess, what?

"Where are you lost, baby girl?" Jade asked passing me a glass of water before I choked on food hearing him call me that. Mimin gave him a fierce look before comforting me.

Her eyes were frequently playing around with his which was the weirdest thing today. What's with them now? Are they dating, after getting married?

"I heard you girls are returning home tonight?" Uncle Martin asked very politely and so, we replied all together by just nodding our heads. Yep, we were done with this place.

Miael needed time to breathe, so did Mimin and well, I was taking not liking so much drama so I needed to leave quickly as well.

...

"Miael?" Noah called before she could step towards our car. I was already sitting in the driver's seat and Mimin was sitting in the back.

"Yes?" She tried to turn to Noah but before she realised it she was already in his arms, "what..the..?"

"What? You've been acting weird all day, I honestly needed to know the reason." He said tightening his grip on her waist.

She rolled her eyes before replying, "Seriously, I thought you'd be happy now that I'm going. After all, you've been obsessing after protecting us for no good reason." She taunted.

He smirked lifting her chin with his index finger, "Nope, I'll be more tensed now. You see, I'm always scared because my wife wore sneakers on our wedding day, so you never know, when would she run away again."

"Get a grip on yourself Noah Martin." Miael blushed as Noah leaned closer to kiss her. Wait, did she not back away? What's going on with my sisters?

"Let's go!" Mimin honked the car to break them apart.

"God, Mrs. Martin, C'mon. Let them have their moment. At least someone's wife does know what goodbye kisses mean." Jade mocked getting in the back seat of the car.

"Gross!" Mimin gasped pushing him away. "Seriously, what is it with you today?"

He smirked better than Noah, "I'm just trying to make sure you don't end up falling for me as your stupid sister fell for my super stupid brother."

"Unm, I kind of agree with him. You see, you twins do everything together. Besides, you have a specific history. " I rolled my eyes putting my head on the steering wheel.

Mimin banged my seat from the back, "Shut up, and you," she pointed at Jade, "Get out!"

"Yes, please," Miael ordered getting inside the car.

Jade pretended to leave but quickly got back in to annoy his wife as he landed a sweet little peck on Mimin's cheek and left her stunned. He closed the door after winking at me as I stepped on the accelerator and we drove off. I would never have stayed behind for them to watch the after effects of his little stunt.
