3. He had the scent of Rain.
"I'm not an attention seeker!" I yelled again banging the side of the table he was leaning at.
He tilted his body away from me, pushed me aside as always and asked Lele, again, "What is her problem?"
The other boys began to walk away while I blocked his way by reaching up to his collar length.
"I have got ears, I can understand your language too." I despised. Glaring right into his eyes and questioning his ego, I made sure my eyes yell at him in secret the curse words I didn't want my mouth to use.
He smirked blowing me away from his route, "I don't talk to girls who can't reach my height."
My jaw dropped down to his standards as he attacked my weakness. How dare he? What..the...!
"Liam," Jade called out to him trying to rescue the little devil. He picked up his bag and started to walk away avoiding me.
"Wait!" He was going to die by my hands today. "Do you think it's a joke? Do you know how many people are crazily dying to talk to you? They do so much for you, they create fan clubs, bring you gifts and what do you do in return? Show them this arrogant attitude of yours? Do you think its funny?" I asked lashing out all my anger in just a single breath. If I was going down, how could I let him stay up alone?
His footsteps stopped hearing the reality as he turned to face me. Vanishing the distance between us, he opened his stupid mouth to spray dirt again, "See, I told you—Popularity is all she craves. Creating a scene and standing up for all the other people to gain their love and support. This is like becoming a rebel and creating a hype about yourself on your very first day." He airlifted his hands speaking loudly, more like announcing to the world. "But even if you get popular, it will always be because of me. Remember that, Missy."
I was sure he was an asshole, but I had no clue he had gone down to this level. The Liam I knew could never say such rough words to anyone. By now I had tears in my eyes. They were not because I was hurt by his words, they were because I was disappointed by him. I knew Liam was always better but I never knew being better would drag him down the lane of insanity. His arrogant nature was so exaggerated that I feared what would happen if he found out who I was?
I wiped my tears and began to walk away when all of a sudden a weirdly calm voice stopped me, "Wait."
I turned to find another guy appear through the crowd. Ironically, he was so much more handsome than the two of them. He had hazel eyes that promised hope but he had a jawline similar to that of Liam's, a little better but still alarming. His deep black hair tossed at the tip of his eyelids from aside as he continued to walk towards me. I could bet he was some another popular guy who had the power to drive the school crazy. How did I know? Well, he walked towards me while the crowd kept on mumbling slowly. Some of them took his pictures while some stupid girls fainted. Weirdly, even to me, he felt someone out of this world. The edges of his chest neatly outlined his grey shirt, while the cuts on his waist were creased out by the denim he was wearing. How can something so unusual look so good on anyone?
As if this wasn't enough, he simply leaned down to my face, pulled my chin up with his index finger and took a clearer look, "if she is someone who seeks attention, then your whole life about real attention seekers was a lie." He told Liam stepping away from me.
"What?" Liam asked in confusion looking at Jade. His face had a thin layer of yellow while his always proud eyes had a glint of fear.
Jade shrugged his shoulders getting rid of the blame, "Don't look at me, I already told you. She is not an attention seeker."
"Apologies, now!" The new guy commanded.
Riri, this is where you ask your heart to stay calm.
I wasn't excited because some new hot guy was helping me, I was excited because finally after 19 years of struggle, someone had asked Liam Martin to apologize to me. My insides were doing somersaults although the situation demanded me not to.
"What?" I blinked my eyes in complete disbelief but he didn't move a single bit.
"But Noah...?" Liam's eyes got closer to his nose like they always did when he felt guilt since the day he was born.
My ears alerted as my eyes widened shifting to his face on hearing his name, "Noah?"
He didn't turn to face me rather kept on sneering at Liam. The junior Martin finally gave into his eldest brother's order and mumbled a low, "Sorry."
"Is it acceptable?" Jade asked.
Noah Martin? Did Mieal save the entire universe in her previous life to hit a jackpot like him? He looked delicious, but hey, he had the power to make Liam apologize to me and above all, he could even scare Jade! Oh God damn!
I was so shocked by all of this, I decided to leave without answering him. Lele followed me as I scrambled out of the cafeteria. Dodging every single soul as they clearly tried to interrupt my brisk escape by getting in the way, I somehow managed to sneak out.
"Riri, wait! Riri!" Lele kept on calling me but I only stopped once I reached the terrace.
I took continuous breaths still trying to accept the fact that our lives were a proper mess and that I was officially doomed. Liam was an egoistic jerk, Jade was a narcissistic moron and Noah, the only one whom I expected to be narcissistic and egoistic asshole was actually the nicest of them all! Everything seemed like a rollercoaster and I seemed to have been sitting upside down on it anyway. It made no sense. Why would they exchange personalities just like that?
"Are you okay?" Lele asked keeping her hand on my shoulder.
"What is wrong with all of them?" I asked jumping to take a seat at the edge of the railing. I succeeded after 3 failed attempts because of the reality of my height.
"Told you, they're the Golden Spoon boys. There's a reason behind that name." She sighed, "It's impossible to have a golden spoon. It comes with a million consequences."
"Goodness. This is madness. How do you guys even live here?" I asked out of frustration.
Lele gave me a subtle smile before asking, "Don't you want to know about the one who just saved you?"
I looked back at her and answered sighing, "Noah Martin, the eldest son of Christopher Martin. The only sane one."
"Yes, the guy who is the Prince Charming of every single girl in this school. But he is the same as his brothers when it comes to girls. None at a time." She laughed faintly. "Legend has it, he used to be narcissistic and arrogant but something happened and he changed overnight. Now he doesn't care much about anything. He lives like no one exists. Nobody dares to walk in his way but today he helped you to walk in the same path as his when he saved you, so brace yourself." Lele said trying to cheer me.
In all these 2 years of debate that I had with myself about my sister's marriage, being a good choice or a bad, her description of this guy, changed my mind to the negative side. What I just witnessed was clear evidence of Noah being a nice guy but Lele described him differently. Her description for Jade and Liam matched 100% then how can I just ignore the fact that she called Noah the same as his brothers? Was he nice to me because he also cares about looks? Did he help me because he knew I was right and that moron Liam Martin was wrong? Or did he just want to make Liam feel ashamed in front of the whole college?
"I need to talk to Miael, could you give me a minute please?" I asked Lele slyly, to which she happily agreed.
I dialed Miael's phone number but she didn't answer. I hated it when that happened. Lele was already gone downstairs and now I was left all alone staring at my phone blankly while thinking about how much more dramatic my first day could get. I dialed her number again and putting the phone on speaker mode kept it aside.
I kept on hearing the dialer tune until she answered,
"Aren't you supposed to be attending classes?"
"Why weren't you answering?" I questioned back grabbing my cell phone all of a sudden.
"I was taking a shower." She replied calmly.
I bit my lips trying to hide my emotions, "How are you?"
"What's wrong? Did somebody bully you?" She questioned back. Why is her sixth sense so strong?
"Nope, just overwhelmed. I miss you so much, sissy." I almost croaked. If she would have sensed that I was crying, the Martin brothers would be dead before I could even get back to my class. That's how Mieal was, ready to kill for family, partially just like Jade.
I heard her little melodious chuckle trying to hide her worries, "Silly girl. Tell me, what's troubling you?"
"The Martin brothers are weird. Liam turned out to be such a Besharam, while Jade became more narcissistic." I ranted playing with my hair.
"That's a new word? Besharam? And I obviously know about Jade, Mimin told me but Liam? That's pretty tough to digest." She giggled.
"Well yes! He is a Besharam, that's an Urdu word for shameless. He called me an attention seeker," I complained. I could bet she was imagining me with one hand raised in the air while the other crushing the cellphone.
"I'll teach him a lesson when I come back." She assured me. It had the warmth my life was missing.
"Who else did you meet?" She added after a pause.
"Noah," I replied. I knew she wanted to know about him.
Her voice got deeper as she began to hum a little, "How's he? Still arrogant?"
"Nope, he is too calm now. He doesn't care about others much though, he has grown a little like his brothers." I blurted.
She tried to hide the part of her tone that clearly said how offended she was and calmly asked, "Who the hell told you that?"
"A friend. Mimin set someone up to guide me." I pouted.
"Never trust the rumors." She defended, "Besides, Noah changed a lot over the years. He is not that arrogant, he is just a little stiff. He doesn't like to blend in much and behaves that way to keep people out of his life."
Wasn't she the one who ran from her wedding because of his arrogance? "I don't know. Maybe you're right." I said weirdly.
What kind of relationship did they share? It was getting more complicated for me to understand.
"What do you want to ask? Just ask directly, stop hesitating." Miael commanded. She already had his reflection in her tone in spite of being away from him for the last 2 years.
It's true, people go crazy after getting married.
"Why did you marry him?" I questioned all of a sudden.
I wanted to ask this to her for so long but I couldn't muster up the courage. And now that I had asked her, I was regretting. I didn't know how she was going to react. Although she was the one who chose to marry him, nobody can deny the bottom line that she still was forced in the situation to choose such a terrible option. If only Dad had been more careful, Mieal would still be a Renaldi and no one would have dared to insult her. I hated it when I heard stupid people call her runaway bride and cheater. She did it to live her life and it wasn't like she killed her groom at the altar, just left him there for some time. How can she be so wrong? Thus, it really was important for me to find out, Why the hell did she agree to get married to Noah Martin?
She was quiet for a while as if calculating a proper and believable answer for me. She knew it wasn't easy to fool me but something was telling me, I was not going to like her reply, and that is when she took a deep breath before speaking,
"He had the scent of rain."
The pain in her voice was a little faint, she seemed to be in no mood to let go of that guy, then why the hell did she run away in the first place? Just as I said, Noah Martin had the scent of rain according to the lady who was obsessed with the scent of rain. How can I ever be at ease with these Renaldi Ladies? Why can't they control their hearts?
When we were kids, I still remember how these two used to be together all the time. They were the only ones at peace. Mimin and Jade were also crazy enemies especially when it came to fighting for things they loved. Liam, as the whole world knew, was my sworn enemy since birth and there was no doubt we had been fighting to be better than each other all our lives.
When I heard Dad was in prison, I was still not sure how come Uncle Martin suggested such a stupid method to get him out. Was it really necessary to make his own daughter a bait for the sake of fame and money? That is why my parents had been fighting with each other for the past two years. Mimin volunteered to marry Noah than why the hell Mieal get in between? Mieal is not just someone fit for being some marriage material. She loved her freedom, she had the wanderlust I had seen nowhere else but in her. She had run away a thousand times before just to stay out of family and its trouble yet she never made our parents feel insecure because of her.
Mum used to call her the smartest, but just because you are the eldest, does that really mean you'll have to sacrifice every God Damn thing that you hold dear? She first gave up on her dream to be a cinematographer because Dad felt she would be the best one to hold his position in Linkton High after him. She then gave up her dream to go to Canes for further studies because Dad wanted her to learn the tips and tricks of Linkton high. Finally deciding for herself, she did run away to be at ease with her life and fulfil her wanderlust, but again, just because she was the eldest she decided to let go of her freedom and marry Noah to save dad.
I had always felt, my sister deserved better. Even though she ran from her wedding, I could still not feel she did anything wrong.
