~An Empty House~

Belle had a long day. After dealing with Devin and his creepy advances she tidied round the house and then after her kickboxing lesson, decided to go to the library.

She checked out 4 fiction books (mostly sci-fi). Said a cheerful goodbye to the librarian, and got a cab home. She returned to see a very shook up Devin on her doorstep, with his head in his hands.

"Uhgg," She spewed. "Where is Papa, Devin?" She asked, forgetting to pay the cabby.

"BELLE!", Devin screeched, jumping off the porch.

Belle jumped. "Devin whats got into you?!" The cabbie stared at the exchange.

Devin ran to Belle and grabbed her arms "Belle something terrible has happened!"

"Devin get off of me!" Belle demanded, wrenching her arm from his grasp.

"Miss-" the cabbie said carefully "-should I call the police?"

"YES!" Devin interjected. "The police can help and animal control and the swat and..."

"DEVIN calm down!" Belle yelled.

"Um I meant for him miss." The cabbie put in.

"Maybe that's a good idea." said Belle realizing that Devin might do something stupid. Or well more stupid then usual. The cabbie pulled out his phone and dialed '999'.

Belle turned to Devin. "Lets get you a nice cuppa tea. Then you can tell me what happened."

Belle got the tea for a rather shell shocked Devin.

"What happened?" She asked, extending his tea cup toward him.

He took the cup in his hands, his blue grey eyes staring blankly at the tea. "... Belle I'm not crazy. You have to know that first...."

"Devin, you're scaring me." Belle stated.

"There is something in the forest." Belle bit her lip and nodded, waiting for him to continue."It got your father. I shot it, but it got away."

"What do you mean it got him?" Belle horror creeping up her spine. "You were there! Whatever happened to Devin the mighty hunter!!!???", she Screeched angrily. Unbeknownst to them, two police constables had walked in through the unlocked door.

Devin looked shocked as she stood abruptly.

"Did Papa tell you that I wont marry you?" She asked warily.

"What?! why not? How could you not want all this?" Devin gestured to himself

"You are by far the stupidest person I ever met! You are self centered, egotistical and just plain awful!" Belle shouted "I wouldn't marry you if you were the last man on earth!" the teacup clinked as Devin set it in its place. He slowly stood up straight and bellowed.

"No wonder nobody likes you Belle! You are such a nagging woman!"

"Is that how little you think of me?!" Belle whispered eyes wide.

"Awe, are you going to cry now?" Devin scoffed getting in her face "Women are so pathetic!"

Belle slapped Devin. "I have a right to be angry! How do you lose a grown person?"

Someone cleared their throat. Belle turned her head to see two Middle aged men in a police uniforms standing in the door way. One of them looked at Devin warily before regarding Belle.

"Good afternoon, I'm Detective Inspector Sam Danvers.", he stated." and this is Constable White, What seems to be the problem miss?"

"My father has gone missing!" Belle exclaimed.

"When did you see him last?" Replied the Detective.

"Actually sir, Devin here was the last to see him.". She said gesturing to Devin.

"Devin... what is your relationship with the missing man?" Constable white asked.

"Soon to be son in law,"

"Shut up! you are not." Belle responded vehemently.

Devin's face turned crimson.

"He is a family friend." Belle told the Detective.

"I see " The detective replied, noting this in his notebook.

"Devin when did you see him last?" Detective Sam asked.

"When we were out deer hunting." Devin replied as he sat heavily down onto the kitchen stool again.

"Where where you hunting."

"In the forest, at a friends farm just north of Darbyshire."

"Can you tell us in your own words what happened?" The detective asked noting the anxiety in Devin's voice and manor.

"...I...I was talking when it snuck up behind me," Devin began uncertainly.

"When what snuck up behind you?"

"The.. the.. thing the.. hound, the wolf..... it was like a wolf but seven feet tall... wicked teeth and red eyes." Devin sputtered.

"Do you think that this is a JOKE?!" Belle scoffed, "My papa is out there in the woods right now all alone because of your incompetence!"

"I AM NOT INCONTINENT!" Devin yelled.

"If both of you don't calm down, we may have to take you to the station." Detective Sam replied calmly.

"Then take me, I'd rather be anywhere then here!" Belle said stubbornly.

"Now now Belle, maybe you should let the men talk." Devin placated. "Go busy yourself in the kitchen."

"What because I'm a woman?!" Belle yelled. "All the knives are in the kitchen. Remember that when you tell a woman her place is there."

"Are you threatening me, you are so cute!" Devin chirped.

"I'll show you cute!" Belle announced launching herself across the table at Devin's face.

"Woah woah woah!" Constable White exclaimed as he grabbed Belle.

"Let go of me! Let go!" Belle sobbed.

"It's alright..." Constable White said calmly, he looked over at his partner and nodded.

"Devin was it?" Sam asked.

"Yes." Devin replied.

"Why don't you come with me, and we can talk at the station."

Devin sighed and nodded.

"Goodbye Belle."

Belle only sobbed louder in response as Devin left the room.

Only when the sounds of the police man's engine faded away, did Belle regain her composure.

She sat down on the couch heavily and took in a shuddering breath. Constable White handed her a blue handkerchief and she wiped her face embarrassedly.

Constable white sat down beside her and waited patiently.

"I'm so sorry for my outburst Constable." Belle whispered.

"Don't be. I can only imagine what you are feeling right now." White replied, "Is there anything else you could think of to tell me?"

"No....I don't think so." Belle replied brokenly.

"Well then, thank you miss for your co-operation." White said firmly.

"When will you start looking?" Belle sniffled.

"In all honesty miss there is a fair bit of paperwork involved but usually once reported we head straight to the crime scene."

"I see..." Belle replied, standing up.

"Miss has Devin ever done anything of a violent nature?" White replied as he stood up.

Belle gasped. "What are you saying?!"

"We have to cover our bases..."

"No... Devin is stupid not violent... I mean he likes hunting but..." Bell's stomach churned at the thought.

"...Alright then we'll be keeping your boyfriend-"

"He is NOT my boyfriend"

"- in custody For your sake as well as his." White finished.

"So what do I do now, wait for you to call me?" Belle asked.

"Unfortunately so." He nodded.

Belle looked up into the cop's aged face.

"Do you have anyone to stay with? Family, Friends?" He asked.

"Not really." Belle replied with a wry chuckle.

"Oh, well in any case try to get some sleep. And I'm so so sorry about this."

"It's not your fault. You're just doing your job."

The officer nodded again and Belle showed him to the door.

"Thank you for your time Constable White." Belle smiled hollowly.

He waved and headed off to his car. Leaving Belle with an empty house and more questions than answers.
