City Trips

Legosi was eating breakfast with his friends as usual. Today, he was wearing a red shirt and casual pants. The city trip allowed them to wear almost whatever they wanted.

"So... have you heard? Two students were found beaten up on the school campus last night." Jack was nervous, the dog struggling to comprehend the possibility of a violent predator roaming the school grounds... or worse, one of the students...

Legosi continued to eat peacefully. He only had remembered parts of yesterday evening. The two bullies attacking him... the rest was a blur. What he did remember was the pungent smell of fear. The leader was scared of him, just as much as Juno was to them. Maybe even more so.

"They had amnesia... The attacker must have been so strong... or so traumatizing." Collot's idea made Jack shiver. How large and powerful must that beast be that attacked them.

"What I find so interesting is that the victims were carnivores. That was no hunger-related attack. There's likely some other ulterior motive.." said Miguno. Practically the whole school was speculating who the mysterious attacker was.

"Maybe the attacker wasn't a carnivore... maybe they were aggressive herbivores?" The table grew silent at that statement. Collot was just thinking... no need to freak out.

"They must feel threatened then." Durham looked off to the herbivore groups. "Maybe it was Louis... that prick-" Legosi had punched the table, his fangs barely visible.

"Don't you dare finish that sentence." The table stared at him, bewildered. Voss's tray had almost fallen off his smaller table, the small canine placing the tray back, giving angry glares.

"He would never do such a thing" He looked around, his friends were looking at him as if he had just committed murder. He sighed, easing his tensed up muscles. "I-im sorry... It's just." He sighed again, this time deflating physically. "Louis may seem like a douchebag at times... but he's great when you look past that whole persona of his." Legosi had defended a friend he didn't even know he had, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized he liked him a lot.

"Calm down... everything's fine," said Jack empathetically.

"I'm sorry... I didn't know you were friends." Durham's words seemed to make it all the more clear. The hatred Louis seemed to present towards all carnivores was merely a facade masking the true feelings of jealousy and fascination. Legosi looked at the clock.

"I'm very sorry about that, but I have to go."

"Again?"

"Sorry guys..." The wolf walked away from the table, leaving his friends perplexed.

"I don't know what happened, but Legosi is changing," said Collot, The white-furred dog looking at the wolf leaving.

"Ever since Tem's death... Maybe it hit him harder than we realized," Miguno speculated.

"Poor Legosi. I bet he thinks it's his fault..." Jack stated worriedly. The retriever looking at his best friend leaving.

The group of carnivores was left in awe after getting off the bus. The City Center was crawling with life. Crowded streets, restaurants, street musicians. As it turns out... adults lived together... peacefully. Aoba noticed a fellow bird flying by.

"They're flying freely here... I'm jealous," he remarked.

"Gotta wait till your an adult for that." Tao reminded the eagle. This outside world seemed so much more peaceful than the school halls they tread day after day. Maybe there was hope for carnivores to seamlessly live beside herbivores.

"Hey, the town hall is that way!" Bill pointed down the road, walking ahead. Legosi looked around. The fresh air made him feel lighter, all the stress from school lifted off his shoulders for the time being.

"Are we having fun there?" Aoba smiled at Legosi. "Your tail's wagging." Legosi looked behind him, his tail wagging enthusiastically. Both Legosi and Aoba started to laugh and followed Bill and Tao.

The plans for the Meteor Festival landed on the table. "Same details as last year," Legosi said, reading the paper.

"Doesn't matter, we got to go out without outing permits! Seems pretty worth it to me." Tao said, biting into his food, the group had decided to eat at a fast-food place after having acquired the festival plans. "Now then. back to your story!" Tao encouraged Bill. The tiger recounting a story of a fling he's been having. Legosi wasn't really listening. He thought of how calm it was out here. No distrust, no fear... just happy co-existing, even cooperation between carnivores and herbivores.

"So, when are you gonna deflower Juno?" The tiger giving him a light shove. How did he know? Bill laughed at the dumbfounded expression of Legosi. "Oh, come on. I can smell that virgin stench on you." Bill laughed again, nudging him.

"I-I... don't think that's any of your business." Legosi answered, straightening his back.

"If you're not quick enough, maybe someone else will-" the loud growl coming from Legosi's throat silenced the others. His fangs glistening in the light. His fur stood on end. "Ok, ok! She's all yours, calm down dude. I was just joking." Bill concentrated on his plate. After all had calmed down, the others resumed talking, no longer teasing the wolf.

After finishing their food, the group decided to go back to the bus stop. They were walking around aimlessly, their phones not helping them in the slightest.

"Zoozle Maps said it should be right here," Aoba said, scratching his head.

"Why don't you use your inner compass. Your a bird ain't you," Bill said, just as lost as everyone else.

"I'm not a migratory bird," Aoba remarked. They had come up to an alley, the poorly lit area was dirty and filled with trash. A truck blocked another entrance from their view entirely. Most curiously of all, however, on the dead-end wall, there was a dark figure sitting on the floor. Wrapped in the blanket. He was slouched over. A homeless person hiding in the darkness perhaps?

"Legosi what are you-?" Bill looked at the wolf approaching the cowering goat.

"Can I ask you a question?" The old goat looked up at the wolf, his raspy voice croaking to life.

"Sure... pick the one you'd like..."

The goat held up its fingers, some already missing, the remaining ones having price tags hanging off them. Legosi stumbled backward, the smell of carnivore saliva and the goat's blood forcing their way into his head. He barely forced himself away.

"We shouldn't be here..." The others looked at him, except Bill who was already crouched down next to the goat.

"If I pay the price, that finger is mine right!?" The goat nodded at the question of the tiger. Bill turned around, towards the group. "If all of us take a bite we can afford it!" Legosi looked at Bill, shocked to even hear the idea come out of his mouth.

"Don't you remember what Louis said?" Legosi tried to remind the tiger of the circumstance as to why they were here without their herbivore club-mates.

"What do I care for that arrogant deer?" Bill had a wild spark in his eyes. He seemed to lose all common sense.

"We are carnivores... the school rules don't apply here." Legosi looked at him firmly. He tried to further reason with Bill, who was visibly getting agitated. „Think about why we are even here without the herbivores." said Legosi.

"What do we have to care about some feral beast that decided to eat a herbivore!" Suddenly, they were interrupted by the sound of a truck's engine roaring to life. The truck that once obscured their view finally revealed the entrance to a large market. This was no ordinary market however... it was the black market. There were carnivores everywhere, purchasing meats of all kinds, from a large variety of other animals.

Legosi looked across the many stands, the smell of cooked meat fogging his mind... Bill laughed as saliva dripped off Legosi's muzzle.

"You can't deny that you want to do it. You're hungry just like us." Bill looked at Legosi, the eyes of whom still darted from stand to stand.

Legosi snapped out of it, Bill already having grabbed money out of his pocket. Legosi composed himself once more, but just barely.

"Please... think about what you're doing for a minute." Trying to reason again. Bill sighed, he let his arms fall.

"Do you know why carnivores live so peacefully out here? Huh? It's because of this place." Bill stood taller now. "Don't take this away from me! From us!" He opened his hand presenting his claws. Legosi looked down. He was right. He was just like them... yesterday night was a testament to that, but he used it to defend his girlfriend... to protect someone, not to justify his instincts.

"Do what you must... make that goat your prey." He sighed, breathing his disappointment out. He raised his head, his gaze again landing on Bill.

"I hope you remember Tem when you do it..." he said, almost spitting it out to show his disdain. Bill stopped in his tracks. Tao who was about to give Bill his money hesitated, pulling his hand back. Tem's death was just as painful to them as it was to Legosi. Bill looked down... disappointed. The money sank back into his pocket.

"I... I totally forgot about him." The pain in his voice was noticeable. "Let's just go home.." Bill said, slowly walking out of the ally.

"I'm sorry... I didn't-" Tao tried to explain himself, the wolf simply putting his hand on Tao's shoulder, nodding slowly. Aoba just looked at him, a guilty look on his face, without any further talking from any of them.

When they arrived back at school, it had begun to rain. After leaving the papers by Sanu, he took a walk. His short experience at the market gave him a few moments of clarity. He wanted to use his instincts to protect others... not justifying his own selfish needs and bringing others to do so too. It began to rain harder as he reached the fountain.

This fountain had brought him so much happiness into his life. He couldn't help but just stand there for a while. His head turned upwards, he enjoyed every cool drop of rain landing on his head. After a while, he smelt Juno approaching, her scent amplified by the rain. Legosi stood still, pretending to not know she was there. He could feel her presence next to him.

Without a word, he grabbed her hand. Together they stood in the rain. Watching, listening...
