Chapter 6
Wendy
I talked to Maddi for over an hour, when Ralph finally woke up. I don't know how he could sleep through all our talking, laughing, choking, and arguing. It started out as talking about random shows. We laughed so hard, and I choked on my own spit. Which just made Maddi laugh harder. Then we started arguing about what ice cream is the best flavor. I'm not even sure how we got to that topic, but we started arguing about it.
Then we ate a five gallon tub of ice cream in silence. That is when my lovely cousin decided to grace us with his conscious presence. We both acted like we didn't hear him groaning as he got off the couch. It would be hard not to hear him. The leather made a weird noise as he pushed himself off the seats.
Maddi and I continued to eat our Oreo ice cream. I heard Ralph walk into the kitchen, dragging his feet on the tile floor. He stopped in the doorway, most likely processing the scene in front of him. Maddi glanced at me, and I shrugged and scooped up more ice cream.
"Wendy?" Ralph said quietly, like he couldn't believe that I was there. "I thought you left" he said it more to himself, than to me. I chose to ignore him as I stuffed my face with my frozen dessert. "I deserve the silent treatment" he mumbled as he walked deeper into the kitchen.
The doorbell suddenly rang and I hopped off my seat. "Well, that's my cue. Thanks for the talk and ice cream" I told Maddi. After giving her a quick hug, I walked past my cousin and to the door. He called my name as I passed him; but once again, I ignored his voice.
I stopped in front of the door. Honestly, it hurt even hearing Ralph's voice. It just reminded me about what he had said last night. His words repeated in my head, completely killing my mood. Suddenly, it just disappeared. It was quickly replaced with happiness and excitement. 'I'm just gonna hold on to that emotion for a little while' Liz informed me.
A small smile spread across my face as I thanked her. Her being able to control my emotions will definitely come in handy. After a deep breath, I pulled open the door. My mate stood on the other side of the doorway. He smiled as he saw me. "Hey" I greeted him softly.
He smiled. "Hey, yourself" he said. "Did you eat yet?" he asked. Well, I ate ice cream. But that doesn't count as breakfast, and I'm still hungry. I decided to shake my head in response. "Then our first stop will be food" he informed me.
I nodded in agreement as I stepped outside. I closed the door behind me. I would lock it, but I don't have a key. Ralph is in there anyway, they should be safe. "Breakfast or lunch?" he asked.
Shrugging, I fell in step next to him as we walked to a fancy-looking motorcycle. My mate walked towards the bike and pulled the seat open. He pulled out a shiny black helmet and handed it to me. "Did you buy a helmet just for me?" I teased.
He shook his head as he walked back over to me. "No. I just had an extra" he told me.
Pursing my lips, I attempted to hold in my laugh. "Um... You do know that the tag is still on it, right?" I stated. He frowned and ripped the tag off of the helmet. He brushed my hair back before putting the helmet on my head. Sparks erupted on my neck where his skin barely touched mine. "What's your name?" I blurted.
Chuckling, he tightened the strap under my chin. "Shane Meyers" he informed me. "Yours?" he asked.
"Wendy Keeler" I introduced myself. Shane put on his own helmet that was similar to mine, except he had the plastic part that slides down and covers your face. Honestly, I like this helmet better than his. Like what if your face is itchy; but the shield thing is in your way, and you can't scratch your face. I guess it makes sense though. You probably shouldn't be trying to scratch your face while riding a motorcycle.
Shane's voice brought me out of my random thoughts. "Do you need help getting on?" he asked. I shook my head and walked towards the bike. It wouldn't be the first time I rode on a motorcycle. Swinging my leg over, I sat behind Shane and wrapped my arms around his waist.
A smile spread across my face as sparks spread up and down my arms. "I want a burger" Shane declared. I agreed to get burgers, then the bike started up with a loud rumble. He sped down the road and did a wheelie. I shrieked in surprise as my arms tightened around him. "You okay?" Shane shouted over the sound of the bike. His voice was slightly muffled by the face shield, but I could still hear him.
I nodded my head in response. With my luck, I'll probably open my mouth and swallow a shit-load of bugs. Shane chuckled before doing another wheelie and speeding up. Oh, god. He's gonna kill me before I even tell him about the Mark. We better get to our destination soon. I suddenly have an urge to pee. Like really bad.
Shane continued to maneuver the bike through the streets. He went in between cars, making his own lane. I'm pretty sure that its illegal; and I'm 100% sure that its unsafe. We're gonna die. We're so gonna die. "We're not gonna die" Shane said with a chuckle. I think aloud way too much. "Yes, you do" he stated.
Keeping my lips pursed, I narrowed my eyes at his back. My hair is gonna be so messed up after this. Only minutes later, the bike finally slowed down to a stop. Shane parked his bike diagonally in a parking spot. I got off the bike as he he put the kickstand down. I laughed as I read the restaurant sign. "Ben's Burgers, Barbecue, and Bar" I read aloud. "You took me to Ben's Burgers, Barbecue, and Bar?" I questioned.
Shane shrugged. "Its not even a real bar. It just has a bar inside" he informed me. I rolled my eyes and attempted to unbuckle the helmet."Need help?" he smirked at me. I sighed and reluctantly nodded my head. With a swift click, he unbuckled the helmet and pulled it off of my head. "Here" he handed me a rubberband.
Giving him a questioning look, I started to put my hair in a bun. Its not like anyone in Ben's Burgers, Barbecue, and Bar would care. "Why do you have a hair-tie?" I inquired.
He looked at me sheepishly. "Maddi makes me carry them around. She always breaks hers and forgets to bring extras" he explained while taking off his helmet. I nodded with a small smile. He put both helmets in the seat and locked it with his keys. "Shall we?" he asked.
I nodded and followed him into the restaurant. Immediately, chatter filled my ears as we walked inside. There was a female worker looked at Shane and gasped. "Its been awhile, Shane" she stated. "Do you want your usual spot at the bar?" she asked kindly.
I have a feeling that my mate comes here often- or he used to come here often. That sounds like the beginning of a cheesy pick-up line. I laughed at my own thoughts, making two heads snap towards me. I awkwardly shifted on my feet as they stared at me. "Table for two" Shane told the hostess. She glanced at me before nodding her head and swiping two menus off the counter.
"Right this way" she said professionally. Shane and I followed her to a small booth. "Drinks?" she chirped.
I quickly scanned the drinks that were on the menu. "I'll have a root beer" Shane and I said in perfect unison. He smirked at me while I blushed and turned away from him. I couldn't help but notice the irritated look on the girl's face. And I couldn't help but feel a little angry at her.
She smiled and nodded her head before walking off. "So, you've been here before?" I asked Shane. He nodded in response. "So what's good to eat here?" I inquired.
He tilted his head as he studied my face. "You didn't want to meet up to make small talk and eat" he mused. "So why did you want to meet up?" he questioned.
And there's the dreaded question! "Here you go!" the waitress came back and placed our drinks in front of us. "Are you ready to order or would you like a few more minutes?" she asked.
Shane frowned at the interruption. "Two of my usual" he replied without taking his eyes off of me. The girl gave us a stiff smile before walking off.
"You have a usual?" I asked while raising an eyebrow.
His eyes slightly narrowed at me. "Don't try to change the subject" he said sternly. I pouted. I thought that he would easily move onto the next thing. "Look. If you came here to reject me, just get it over with" he begged.
Frowning, I shook my head. "I'm not gonna reject you" I informed him. He sighed in relief. But you might reject me. I added in my head.
He looked at me with a shocked expression. "Why do you think I would reject you?" he questioned. Yeah, I really need to work on keeping my thoughts inside of my head.
I sipped on my soda before looking at him with a defeated sigh. "Its a long story..." I trailed off. He gave me a look that told me to continue. "Have you dated someone before?" I asked. He was confused by my sudden question, but answered with a nod of his head. "Have you been in love before?" I inquired.
Reluctantly, he nodded his head again. "But-"
"So have I" I cut him off. He made his face look emotionless as he told me to explain. "I was part of the Blue Moon Pack. I was dating my Alpha; and I was- I thought I was in love with him" I corrected myself.
I haven't sorted out all of my feelings, but I believe Liz when she said that I never loved Asher. "But he found his mate. At the time, I couldn't accept the fact that we wouldn't be together and that I wouldn't be Luna. Honestly, I was power-hungry" I admitted with a sigh.
Shane tilted his head as he looked at me. "Isn't the Queen his mate?" he questioned.
I nodded my head. "I said and did a lot of bad things" I said vaguely. "As a result of those bad things, Alpha Asher banished me. He also gave me a Royal Mark" my heart started pounding once the words left my mouth.
He still had his emotionless mask on as I forced myself not to cry. "When was this?" he asked.
"A year ago" I answered. Taking a deep breath, I quickly explained my rogue life. I told him about the 'game.' I told him that I turned off my emotions. The waitress came back with two huge plates, interrupting story-time.
Shane didn't make any move to touch his meal. He intently stared at me. "But you have emotions now?" he inquired. I nodded my head. I want him to say something. To tell me how he feels about all of this. But he just asked me questions. "Do Ralph and Maddi know?" I shook my head.
He pushed his food to the side so he could lean forward on the table. "I'm the Head Warrior of my pack" he informed me. "If I find a criminal, it is my responsibility to turn them in" he stated. I took a deep breath and nodded my head in understanding.
"My responsibilities come before anything and everything. That's how I was taught to be a good Head Warrior. That's what my father taught me" he paused. "He also taught me that family comes first" he announced. "I might not have any blood family. But the people in this pack are my family. And I'm not putting my family at risk" he said sternly.
I took a deep breath and shut my eyes. "When are you turning me in?"
