[2] Prologue: Three Wishes

"Aren't fairies all supposed to be pretty girls?"

Rob looked down at the tiny creature sitting on his outstretched index finger. Well, it was pretty, all right.
Rather sparkly too.

It had very fine, long limbs that were, rather surprisingly, colored a beautiful chestnut-brown and almost seemed to glow from within.
You usually pictured pearly, or glittery white, when you thought of fairies, but, now that he saw one, Rob found that the vivid brown fit the creature much better, than a lighter tone would have.
It accented its shimmering, translucent dragonfly wings, and made it seem truly a spirit of all things living and growing, like the fairy itself was an integral part of the lush green forest, that surrounded them.

Besides, the long, pointy ears and the flowing white hair was all picture-book-fairy, so it was nice that there was something a little unexpected about it.

The fairy glared at him.

"Well, where do you think baby-fairies come from?", it asked.

"Uh, I don't know. Don't they grow from flowers or something?"

"Flowers?! Do I look like a bloody plant to you, mate?", the fairy shook its tiny head in irritation.

"Anyway. You caught me, so you want your three wishes now, or what?"

"Oh, right!", Rob grinned. "I've come prepared.."

"No, you can't wish for more wishes"

"Oh.."

Rob's face fell, and the fairy rolled its tiny eyes at him.

"They all try that. But it's THREE, no more. Rules is rules."

"Well... alright then. Good thing I've got a plan B"

The teen grinned happily in anticipation.

"I want to be really good looking for all my life, live a really long time, and" , here he paused dramatically, "I want superpowers! The exact ones Super Jason of Justice gets from the magical wristwatch in the third book of the seventh series, but without the time limit or any of the drawbacks, plus all the ones he had in series five."

The fairy shrugged.

"Okay."

"What? Really"

"Yup. We've got ourselves a deal then."

"Whoa, awesome!"

The fairy got up and stretched, beating its wings once or twice, before walking over to balance on the very tip of Rob's finger.
A glittering white light appeared between its hands and seemed to throw tiny sparkles everywhere.
The creature threw the light towards Rob, hitting his chest, where it immediately expanded until it enveloped his whole body.

The teen could feel a warm, prickly sensation all over his skin, as the magic began to work on him, changing his form, drawing out his very essence.

He felt it all, every tiny change within him, and his eyes grew wide.

He would have screamed too, if he could have, as the hovering form of the fairy grew further away and the forest around him seemed to become larger and larger, while every single fiber of his being changed, twisted and solidified.

When it was done, the fairy landed softly on the ground next to the small, glowing seed, that had been a boy not moments ago.

He picked it up, and studied it for a moment, before unceremoniously ramming it into the earth.

An instant later, a thin, weedy tree shot up.

The fairy tsk'd, somewhat dissatisfied.

That kid had hardly been worth his time. But then, no matter how weak, this one too, would serve his mistress.
Maybe he'd have better luck with the next one.
Fluttering its wings, the fairy jumped up into the air and was soon gone from sight.

But, of course, you had to honor the bargain.

The rules are important.

And so, the weedy tree that had once been a boy, dreamed of a different world, of everlasting good-looks and fantastical powers, while his very life was slowly drained away to feed the gate to a place, that has neither sun or moon.
