A covenant upheld
The day after Jungkook left the lab was painstakingly long. Taehyung paced around his apartment, thinking about what the younger boy might be doing right now. He hoped he'd be playing the old piano in the rec room. It was the only thing that he really enjoyed at that place. The last thing he wanted to see Jungkook do was go back to the way he was before they had met. That sad, scared little boy who wanted nothing more than someone to care for him. Taehyung felt like he had totally betrayed him. He wanted nothing more than to run back to him, and hope that he could forgive him.
He couldn't get any sleep thinking about it. He kept picturing Jungkook's face as he cried out his name with tears running down his cheeks. The way he looked curled up on the floor as he left the room without looking back. He knew what he was doing and he couldn't believe he let himself do it. Maybe he did do the human race a favor by giving the doctors a close look into congenital insensitivity to pain, but he most certainly didn't do Jungkook a favor.
The next day, he left his house as early as he could to get to the psych ward to see Jungkook. He had to be going over the speed limit. Taehyung has never wanted to be any where with anyone as much as he did right now. But, now that he was about to see him, he couldn't think of what he would say to him. He knew how fragile Jungkook was. Any little thing he could say would have him thrown over the edge. It made his head and his heart hurt. Every time he'd think about seeing Jungkook again, it just reminded him of what he said to him a couple of days before. The memory was so clear and it burned in the back of his mind. He couldn't forget about it no matter how hard he wanted to.
A few minutes of self loathing had passed before Taehyung pulled into familiar hospital parking lot. He quickly got out of his car and jogged to the door of the institution. When he entered, the usual lady I white who sat at the front desk gave him a polite smile, but there was a different look as well. Not a worried expression, but an almost sympathetic one. It made Taehyungs heart quiver.
"How is he?" Taehyung asked immediately. The lady already knew who he was talking about of course, but she didn't answer fully. She just sighed and said it was okay for him to go back to Jungkook's room, so he did.
Taehyung stopped to look at the monitor on the table in front of Jungkook's room. He was getting an injection of some sort. Though he had seen the younger boys medical records, he still wasn't completely sure what was in all of the medicine that he was constantly given. But he did notice that Jungkook's forearms were heavily bandaged. Little stains of blood could barely be seen on them. And Taehyung now started to worry.
He waited until Jungkook was done taking his massive amounts of medication before slowly opening the door. What he had hoped for wasn't there. In fact, Taehyung had expected the worst, and the worst is what he got. Jungkook was curled up into corner of the bed. He was so pale that his skin looked almost as white as everything else in the room. Even his raven black hair wasn't as striking as it usually was. It was now more of a dusty dark grey that just added to his sickly figure. He didn't look up when Taehyung entered the room.
Taehyung stood awkwardly at the door for a moment. He wasn't exactly sure what to do. He didn't know how Jungkook would react to him being there. He could lash out, scream, cry. Who knows. Half of Taehyung wanted to turn back around and leave, as he knew what would most likely happen anyways, but he kept at it. He shuffled closer and closer to the side of Jungkook's bed.
"J- Jungkook..." Taehyung said softly. The word barely left his mouth, his hands were shaking and his chest felt numb. But, he saw Jungkook's shoulders relax ever so slightly. The brunette reached out his hand and gently placed it on top of Jungkook's head. The latter flinched a little and turned his head toward Taehyung.
His skin was so pale and his eyes were so dark. His cheeks were sunken in and there were dark circles under his eyes. He looked like he hadn't eaten since the last time he saw him. Taehyung laced his fingers through the faded black hair and watched as Jungkook's expression changed and his became watery, and before Taehyung knew it, the younger was a bawling mess.
Taehyung immediately sat on the bed and pulled Jungkook's body into his own. He held him so tightly with his head in his chest and Jungkook sobbed and sobbed.
"I... d-didn't think... you'd come back," Jungkook choked out in between his crying. Taehyung could feel the boys weak and unstable body shaking against him. His small hands gripped Taehyung's shirt so tightly to the point where his knuckles turned white.
"Of course id come back," Taehyung replied. He tried to say more than that but he still hadn't figured that out. He kissed the top of Jungkook's head just continued to sit in that position.
"Why did you leave tae?" Jungkook asked with a shaky voice. "Why did you leave me like that?" The boy was sobbing so loudly that the question came out in a scream. Taehyung felt as if he'd been stabbed right in the chest, as the answer was something he did not want to admit. He didn't want to tell Jungkook that he had put other people before him, since the only thing the younger male needed was someone to depend on. Someone who would put him first.
Taehyung rubbed circles in Jungkook's back and started to feel tears well up in his own eyes. As he felt the frail boy tremble in his arms, seeing him in tears that just kept coming and coming, Taehyung kept thinking that it was all his fault that he was in a state like this, helpless and desperate. Jungkook clung to him closer than he ever had before, wanting to hold on to the only thing that had ever showed him love and care. He wasn't going to let Taehyung go again.
"Kookie I'm sorry," Taehyung said before kissing the top of Jungkook's head once again. "I'm so sorry."
After a little while more of the loud sobbing between the two boys, their breathing calmed down a bit. Taehyung peeled the dark hair boy off of him and took his bandaged wrists gently in his hands.
"Jungkook," he said with a suddenly much more serious tone. "Do you want to tell me what happened?" Jungkook looked at the floor, his body filled with regret and guilt at the fact that he had tried to end his life because of Taehyung leaving him, when all along, a part of him knew that he would be coming back. He slightly shook his head.
"Kookie..."
"I'm okay, tae," the younger boy mumbled. "I'm okay now. You don't have to worry about me."
"Kookie," Taehyung said, rubbing his hand up and down Jungkook's left arm. "I'm going to worry about you no matter what. I made you a promise remember? In order for that to work you have to take care of yourself. If anything happened to you, I wouldn't be able to keep my promise."
Jungkook remembered the day when Taehyung had promised him that he would get him out of this boring place. He remembers their conversation about what outside looks like, and what flowers smelled like. He finally saw just that little bit of hope that Taehyung had given him that he would in fact get to leave this awful place, and he genuinely felt happy after a period of total darkness. The storm cloud above his head had cleared up into a slightly less dark fluff.
He buried himself into Taehyung's touch again, and through his bliss, he slowly drifted to sleep with Taehyung's words speaking to him softly.
"I'll never leave you again."
