Flashback

"Soo Bin, my darling daughter, please be kind and polite to others, don't ever bully people, and don't be sad," my father urged as he laid on a bed, weak and in tears, with my mother beside me.

"Daddy, I'm not sad, I'm happy," I responded, not grasping the circumstances as my mother embraced me. I looked at my parents, who were sobbing up, and said, "Mama and daddy, don't cry, I won't be sad," in a sweet voice. In my ten-year-old body, I just stared at both of my parents.

"Dear, please take care of our daughter while I am not here," my father implored, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Mommy, why is daddy crying?" I said, concerned. When you are a child in this same situation, you will all be confused. My mother simply comforted me and began to cry. When I looked at both of them, I noticed that my father had closed his eyes. At that moment I just knew my dad last words were " please be kind and polite to others, don't ever bully people, and don't be sad" those were the last breath I ever heard from my dad ever again.

1 year later

" Mommy, where has daddy gone?" I inquired a year after that particular incident.

My mother always pretended he was away on business or something, but when she finally spoke to me face to face, she told me all I needed to know about my father.

"Soo Bin, I'm sorry for not telling you this sooner...but I need to tell you because I want to introduce you to someone tomorrow," my darling mother explains.

"Um, honey, daddy is no longer with us," she murmured, hugging me immediately.

"What do you mean Mommy, he is not with us, he is in New York on business," I said, still puzzled by my mother's silence and tears.

"Soo Bin mommy is trying to tell you that daddy is no longer with us in this world," she said, again and again, attempting to make me comprehend. It took me a moment to understand what was going on. As I realised what my mother was trying to say, I burst out crying while hugging her and asked, "Mommy, why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"I don't want you to be worried, and you were still young back then; you are now 11 years old, but you need to know sooner, and your father was diagnosed with cancer, but I still love you," my mother added.

And as a result, I was depressed and wretched for the rest of my 11-year-old life.

The next day

It was New Year's Eve, and yesterday was a dreadful day for me because my mother was getting married to a wealthy businessman. I was upset, but tonight I was walking with my mother around the fair at night because it was so busy.

"Here, Soo Bin... this is for you, pink ball..." I know you despise him, but please give him a chance." I stood there in quiet, clutching the pink ball.

We kept walking through the fair, and my mood remained low. At the festival, there were a lot of people. Someone bumped into me, and I dropped the ball, causing it to roll away. I attempted to reclaim the ball.

I was on a beach when I eventually caught the ball, and my mother was nowhere to be found. At the beach, I'm lost and alone. I was on the verge of crying. Who could blame me? An 11-year-old would cry in this scenario, but I remained calm and hoped that my mother would find me.

"Please help!!!!" From afar, I heard someone yelling. I took a step towards the yelling voices. The voice might be heard near the sea. I got closer and closer till I noticed a kid about to drown. I immediately jumped into the water and attempted to save the child from drowning. My parents' efforts that send me to swimming lessons paid off.

I dragged the child to the water's edge. When I looked at the child, I noticed that it was a boy.

" Are you all right?" I asked, and he simply nodded.

"Umm, thank you, my name is Minseok," he added as he attempted to introduce himself.

" Min- Uk... "My name is Soo Bin," I said, attempting to pronounce his name.

"It's not Minuk, it's Minseok SooBin," he corrected, trying to get me to say his name right.

" How about I call you Xiumin... May I call you that?" I questioned, beaming at him.

" Why? we, not friends" he said.

" Can we be friends ?" I asked him.

" Okay, but why Xiumin? "Soo Bin," he responded.

"I don't know, I watched this Chinese cartoon once, and the boy's name was Xiumin, and you remind me of him in some ways," I explained.

" Oh, I like it, you can call me Xiumin, we'll be friends for life, thank you for saving my life, Soo Bin...

"I slipped and fell into the waters, but you saved me," he exclaimed happily.

" Where is your mother?" I questioned.

"We were separated," he stated in a childlike voice.

" I-" My thoughts were interrupted when my mother came racing towards us, and another lady also ran towards Xiumin.

" Soo Bin, are you okay? Is something wrong with you?" She expressed concern about me.

I was only staring at the boy as his mother hugged him and his father ran towards him.

"It's getting late honey, we need to go home," my mother tugged me away, and I stood there staring at him, resentful that he is enjoying a good life. Our gazes locked for the final time, and I waved goodbye to him, who simply smiled.

I was at home when I noticed a pink bracelet on my wrist. When did I get this? Did he hand it over to me?

End of flashback

"Wait, why does he have this?" I inquired, and he returned my gaze.

" Is this you in this picture?"I asked.

" That young kid right there ... that's me" he replied.
