10.) Family
(^^Unrelated but it's an old thought)
School is over. Xia, Max, Chelsea, and Terry are heading to the parking lot to their vehicles to head home.
"Xeexee!" a male voice shouts out.
Xia freezes in place for a second.
"Zeezee? What the–?" Terry comments.
"I don't know," Xia says, grabbing his hand and pulling him to the limo. "Let's ignore 'em."
"Xeexee! Don't ignore meeeee!"
"Chill, you don't gotta pull so hard," Terry huffs, shuffling along beside her as she pulls him.
"Who do you think he's calling for?" Max asks.
"Who cares, let's just go," Xia says.
Ami flies over happily swirling around the boy. He seemingly sees her and gives her a high five.
Chels chuckles. "What has you in such a hurry?"
"Xeexee! Ignoring me is so mean!" he continues to shout. He waves his hands around back and forth. "I know you hear me! Come give your big brother, that you haven't seen in a few months, a hug!"
Xia can feel her face slightly turning pink from embarrassment as her three 'friends' turn to look at the boy.
"Big brother?" Max questions, noticing the height of the guy.
"There's no way," Chels says. "He's gotta be a middle schooler at most."
Xia covers her face with her hand in embarrassment.
The guy makes his way over to them.
"He's coming this way," Max says.
"Wait, Zeezee but it's really with an X, isn't it? Meaning..." Terry turns to Xia. "Xeexee, that's rich."
"Shut up, Terry beary," Xia harshly responds.
Terry pouts in reply then looks down at her brother, seeing the resemblance. They look exactly alike, but he's so... short.
"Xeexee, rood," the boy pouts, putting his hands on his hips. He then engulfs her in a tight hug. "I'm not letting go till you hug back."
Xia sighs, hugging back before letting go and turning to him. "Xavi, you look gay."
He gasps offendedly. "That's really the first thing you say to me after so long? I'm hurt. I'm not gay."
"How's your boyfriend?"
"Toby's grumpy as usual," he says.
"Wait... I'm confused," Chels mutters.
"That's typical," Xavi grins. "You really haven't told your friends?"
Xia sighs and shrugs. "It never really came up in conversation. I just didn't think it was all that important. Anyway, we're pansexual. Being..." She glances to her brother. "...who we are... we don't really care what someone looks like. I typically lean more towards males though, but it really all pans down to who I'm attracted to."
Xavi gasps. "Did you just pun! I'm so proud!" He releases fake tears, glomping her as she shoves him back by his face. "Annnywaay, yeah, we get it from our mom's... ethnic side of the family. They all look so different," Xavi says. "It's hard sometimes to tell–"
"Anyway," Xia cuts him off. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I got news that you were here," he grins. "I do go to the college here. Anyway, so you gonna introduce me to your friends and boyfriend?"
"Boyfriend?" Xia voices in confused disgust.
"Well, I assumed, you are holding his hand."
Xia looks to Terry, seeing their connected hands and ripping them apart. She totally forgot. She pouts with a faint blush. "Terry isn't my boyfriend, you weirdo. He's my bodyguard to keep me outta trouble..."
Xavi begins to laugh. "That sounds a lot like Great Grandpa Bruce. He always thinks things through."
"This is my best friend, Chelsea. And that's Terry's best friend Max."
"Nice to meet you," Max says, shaking Xavi's hand. "Xia's never talked about you."
"I figured. She doesn't really talk all that much about herself," he chuckles. "I'm Xavi Todd. I'm 19 and go to Gotham University, studying to be a doctor like my momma."
"Your mom's a doctor?" Terry asks, looking to Xia in surprise.
"Yeah, so?" Xia scoffs, crossing her arms.
"Xee is just mad that she didn't get the healing ability that our mom and I have," Xavi says.
"I don't give a damn about your stupid healing shit!" Xia claims, crossing her arms. "Not like I have anyone to heal anyway..."
"Who is your mom?" Chels asks.
"Xuna Todd," Xavi simply answers.
"Wait, seriously?! The miracle doctor?! She's the best doctor in the world!" Max exclaims.
"Yeah, and she's married to the guy who does Kung Food," Chels says.
"Wow, you're whole family is rich rich," Max says, looking between the siblings.
"Wait, wait..." Terry interrupts. "I'm still on the whole pansexual thing, what did you mean by 'who you are'?"
"We're different from normal people," Xavi says. "I know that doesn't really help, but I'm not allowed to say. That's up for Xee to tell ya when she wants."
"And I don't, so don't ask."
"What's taking you so long to get her? I got bored waiting to surprise her," a new voice enters the conversation.
They all turn to the new voice to see a young looking but obviously older man.
"Gramps!" Xia shouts, dropping all her stuff and jumping into his arms.
"Xee!" he replies, happily returning her hug. "I've missed you, mini me!"
"Aww, why does he get such a good hug?" Xavi pouts.
"I missed you too," Xia replies, burying her face in his chest. "You're my favorite person ever."
"Of course. I'm the coolest. Even with your mom's side of the family," Jason grins.
The two release each other then do their secret handshake.
"We gonna do some fun shit?"
"Got the weekend all planned out," Jason replies. "So, who're your friends?"
"Terry, Max, and Chelsea," Xia says, gesturing to each one.
Jason's eyes land on Terry, eyeing him up and down with a grin. "So you're the newbie I've heard about? Think you can live up to the mantle?"
Terry gives a confident smirk back. "I think I've done a pretty good job so far."
"You've succeeded so far cause you've been lucky," Jason shrugs. "You won't be at some point. We'll just have to fix that."
Max just stares at Jason with wide eyes, realizing that if he's Xia's grandpa that means he's the Red Hood. "Whoa..."
"So, you told me you got spliced," Jason says. "What happened to your ears and tails?"
"Ah, Batman," Xia simply replies. "He gave me the cure. It only partly worked though because of my genetics."
"Batman!" Xavi huffs. "You shouldn't be interacting with a vigilante! That's dangerous!"
Xia rolls her eyes as she crosses her arms. "Please, I could easily take down Batman if I wanted to. Both of us could."
Jason grins, swinging an arm around her. "That's my granddaughter. So, how'd it only half work?"
Xia snarls her upper lip to show her canines still there. "The senses are still there too." She keeps the growing claws to herself though.
Jason looks to Ami. "Glad to see you're still around as well."
Ami smiles in reply.
"Uh, who were you talking to?" Chels asks.
"He was talking to Ami," Xia says. "My ghost friend, remember?"
"Ah, right."
"I get my ghost sight from my grandpa," Xia says. "He can see them too."
"I still don't really believe you can see them," Max says. "Ghosts aren't real."
Xia rolls her eyes. "Just like Gods and Atlantians and aliens don't exist."
"Because there's proof of them," Max retorts.
"Alright then," Xia shrugs. "Ami push Max onto her butt."
Ami grins and happily complies, easily shoving the girl down.
Max squeals as the three Todds chuckle.
"How did you do that?!" Max shouts.
Ami decides to take it further and grabs her arm to pull her back up.
"Believe me now?"
"Okay, yeah, I clearly felt a hand," Max says. "But... how?"
"Usually when ghosts hang around someone who can see them long enough, they start to get stronger," Xavi says.
"And the stronger the ghost the worse their death was," Jason says. "Which makes Ami's death a really bad death as she was already really strong before she attached herself to Xee. If a ghost is able to touch you from the get go that would make them a poltergeist."
"How did Ami die?" Chels asks.
"We don't know," Xia says. "She doesn't like to talk about it and her memory is a bit fuzzy like most ghosts. Also, you shouldn't really ask a ghost how they died it's kind of rude."
"Oh. Sorry."
"Anyway, we're going out to eat tonight," Jason says.
Xia quirks an eyebrow. "Who's all going?"
"Me, you, Xavi, Bruce, Damian, and... Kad'r."
Xia groans. "Please noooo."
"What's so wrong with Kad'r?" Terry asks.
"You'll understand her pain once you meet him," Jason says. "We're going to an expensive restaurant. Go get on a tux, you're coming with us too. You're part of the family now."
"Ugh, that means I have to dress pretty," Xia complains. "At least I don't have to deal with Mar'i."
"Wait, why is he part of the family now?" Chels asks.
"With the position he holds, he's never gonna be able to escape now," Jason says, clapping Terry on the back. "It's his life now!" He begins leading him to the car. "Once you're a part of it you can never leave no matter how hard you try." He laughs. "Even after death."
Chels shivers. "That's a scary thought."
"No kidding!" Jason replies. "Now, you go on home and get dressed in a nice suit. Meaning a tux. Then meet us at the manor. Come on, Xee."
"See you guys later," Xiara says, waving behind her as she follows Jason over to his motorcycle. She gets on behind him, slips on the extra helmet, and holds on.
Xavi gets on his own, and the three leave for the manor.
"Well, that was... interesting," Chels says, getting into her own car after unlocking it. "Have fun on your date, see ya."
"I-It's not a date!" Terry huffs, rolling his eyes.
Chels waves him off and drives off. Terry sighs.
"Yeah, Red Hood is one intimating dude, and he wasn't even trying," Max says. "You're going to meet Damian Wayne. He's like the king of intimidation. I'm scared for you."
"Thanks for the good luck."
Max shrugs. "I got homework to finish. See ya, bat boy."
Terry sighs and gets into the Wayne limo.
~~~
Terry walks up to the manor, brushing off his tux and straightening it out before entering.
"TODD!"
Terry flinches from the deep shout. "What in the–"
"I will stab you if you don't give me back my phone!"
"I'd like to see you try, shortstack!" Jason replies, running out from the dining room across the foyer in front of Terry.
"I'm taller than you, old man!" Damian responds, chasing after him. He jumps up and goes to kick Jason only for Jason to swerve out of the way.
"I may be an old man, but I'm still faster than y–uh!" He proceeds to get decked across the face, making him stumble back with an annoyed groan. "Fuck! You little shit!" He moves to retaliate.
"Uh?" Terry coughs.
They both turn in his direction.
While Jason's distracted, Damian snatches his phone out of Jason's hand then straightens himself out with a huff. Damian sticks up his nose in disdain, glaring at Terry. "You must be my father's replacement." He moves over to him and walks around him, observing him. "I'm not impressed. How could father let a delinquent such as yourself become someone so important? An idiotic decision."
"Like you really have room to talk, little assassin," Jason scoffs.
Damian rolls his eyes. "You're not fit to be Batma–"
"I don't understand why you two have to fight all the time," Xavi groans, entering the room.
Damian cuts himself off and crosses his arms. The two youngest Todds know nothing about the family vigilante side. They all plan to keep it that way. Terry has enough sense not to retort with them while he's in the room, otherwise he'd probably start yelling. But... Terry also has enough sense to not pick a fight with two men that could obviously beat his ass without so much as lifting a finger. Especially not without his suit.
Kad'r comes flying into the room with a big smile on his face. "Hi!" he chirps, moving to enthusiastically shake Terry's hand. "I'm Kad'r Wayne! Who are you? You must be the new guy! I heard that grandpa Bruce hired a new guy! That must be you, right?"
Terry can now see why Xiara didn't like Kad'r. He was way too chipper. "I'm, uh, my name is Terry, Terry McGinnis."
"Kad'r!" Xavi shouts with wide eyes, looking to Terry with fright. "You-You shouldn't fly around–"
"It's okay, Xavi," Jason says. "Terry here knows already."
"I do?" Terry mumbles, getting a light glare from Jason. "Ah, yeah, I do."
Xavi owlishly blinks. "Oh, okay..."
Bruce decides to make his appearance also known, slinking out of the dining area too. "Good, you're here."
Terry looks around at the family. "Wait, isn't Xiara supposed to be here?"
"She's still getting ready," Kad'r says. "You know how girls take so long to look all nice."
"Didn't really take Xiara as that kind of girl."
"Because I'm not," her voice cuts through.
Everyone turns to see her at the top of the stairs making her way down.
Terry blinks. "Wow..." He unconsciously walks to the front of the group in awe.
"I hate getting dolled up." She clicks her tongue in annoyance.
Jason whistles. "You look beautiful, Xee."
"I know." She continues down the stairs and stands in front of all of them. She looks to Terry's gobsmacked face with a blank look.
"Wow, you look... really good," Terry admits.
"You look... rather nice yourself."
"Alright, alright," Jason interrupts, shoving his way between them. "I don't wanna see you making those goo-goo eyes at my granddaughter anymore or ever again, so let's go. I'm starving." He shoves his hands in his pockets and heads out the door.
"Ah, that was so cute!" Kad'r says, grinning at the two.
"Kad'r, cut the flying. Let's go," Damian demands, turning and walking out the manor.
"Yes sir," he complies, gently landing on the ground and following behind his father.
Xavi follows behind them, leaving the three.
Bruce lightly shakes his head with a faint smile. "Come on, we should go before another fight breaks out." He shuffles out the door with his trusty cane.
Terry gives a sheepish grin, awkwardly rubbing the back of his head.
Xia grins. "What, are you just now registering that I'm a girl?" She drapes her hands over his shoulders, leaning in close. "Figuring out that I'm hot? Falling in love with me?" She runs her hands down his side before she moves away with a sadistic chuckle. "Alright, that was gross. Please don't fall in love with me. That'd be weird. Come on, spacey. Let's go eat some good expensive food."
"So... your cousin can fly?"
"I assume you know who Starfire is, correct?"
"Yeah."
"Well, Starfire married GGB's first adopted, Dick Grayson, and they had a daughter named Mar'i aka Nightstar. Mar'i married Damian and they had Kad'r. Anyway, Kad'r is a quarter tamaranean. He has the flight and the green eyes and super strength."
"Wait, wait, wait, back up. Isn't Damian Bruce's son?" Terry asks confused.
"Yup."
"So, Mar'i married her uncle?"
"Yep."
"Gross."
"True, but at least they aren't blood related."
"True."
"You don't have to worry about me marrying into the family. It's already fucked up enough."
"In more ways then one."
~~~
They all arrive at the high end restaurant and are led to a circle table by the hostess. Inside is packed full of the bluebloods of Gotham. Xia's chair is pulled out by the hostess and pushed back in as she sits down. She thanks her quietly but is secretly annoyed. Terry sits to her left with Jason taking up her right. Kad'r sits in between his father and Jason. Bruce sits next to his blood son. Xavi sits between Terry and Bruce.
"Your waiter will be here shortly," the hostess says, passing out menus and a drink menu before heading back to the front.
"Now this is going to be a nice dinner," Bruce grunts. "I don't want anything to happen that I will have to pay for to be broken by any of you."
Damian rolls his eyes. "I can pay for myself. I'm not a child anymore."
"Yet ya still act like a spoiled brat," Jason retorts.
"How about I prove–"
"Boys," Bruce huffs.
They both pout like children and cross their arms.
Terry grins, leaning over to Xia with a whisper. "It's entertaining to see this side of the old man."
"If you think this is entertaining you should see the shit storm that happens when the whole family is together," she whispers back.
"Oh, I have no doubt."
They order their food and chat while they wait.
"I need to piss," Xia says, standing up. "Brb."
Bruce sighs. "Xiara, just say you need to use the restroom next time. Why didn't you go before we left?"
"Nah, not my style and didn't have to go then," she retorts and walks to the bathroom.
"I blame you for her whole being," Bruce says to Jason.
Jason goes to retort a death joke but stops himself with Xavi there.
Xavi's phone begins to ring, so he looks at the caller. "Ah, it's Toby. I gotta take this." He excuses himself and heads out front.
"Guess it would've been better if I stayed dead then, huh?" Jason lets out his retort. "Couldn't reproduce then, huh?"
"A death joke, really? You really couldn't help yourself, could you?" Damian scoffs.
"I had to let it out," Jason admits with a shrug. "Can't change who I am."
After a few seconds of eye rolls, all eyes turn on Terry who gulps in reply.
"Still can't believe you gave the mantle to a unworthy child," Damian scoffs to his father.
"His–"
"I've looked into him already. You don't have to give me his sob backstory," Damian cuts off his father. "A street rat and a delinquint."
"Father, it's not nice to call people names," Kad'r scolds. "Just because his backstory isn't as traumatic as yours, doesn't mean it's not."
Terry looks to his lap. "I may not be a good fit. I know I'm not the best. I know I have a small criminal background, but that's all the more reason I'm doing this." He determinedly looks up at them. "I'm doing this to make myself feel better for the awful things I've done in the past. I'm making up for letting people down."
Damian remains silent as his eyes narrow.
Jason smirks. "I was a street rat too. I guess that's something the old man can never get rid of." He looks to Bruce. "He has a tendency to make peoples lives for the better in some kind of way... even if sometimes they don't always see it that way."
Bruce smiles.
"We shall begin your training immediately," Damian declares. "I'll make room in my busy schedule with running Wayne Enterprises."
"How about I train him?" Kad'r asks.
Damian thinks on it, seeing Xia make her way back over to them. "I have a better idea. We'll discuss it later."
Xia looks in Xavi's direction as she sits back down. "Where'd Xavi go?"
"His boyfriend called," Jason answers.
"Ah."
Waiters come out and set food on the table. "Does everything look good? Need anything?"
They all nod then look at each other before shaking their heads no.
"I think we'll be okay," Bruce says, smiling. "Everything looks wonderful. Thank you."
"You're welcome," he says before disappearing to another table to check up on them.
Xavi comes back a bit later as they eat.
About halfway through their meals, the doors to the restaurant are blown open.
Damian immediately leaves to the bathroom, pressing a button on his watch to have his suit wash over him once alone. Jason follows suit, pressing the button on his 'hearing aids' for his helmet and also his watch for the suit.
A plethora of Jokerz flow into the building from all exits, so nobody can leave. Two very familiar Jokerz are immediately spotted by Xiara. She snarls her lips in annoyance.
"Alright, alright, rich snobs," J-Man walks up as the leader. "Money, creds, jewelry, or anything of value into the bags and no one gets hurt."
Jokerz begin to make their way around the room, collecting everyone's valuables in bags.
Scab makes his way over to the Wayne/Todd table, smirking as he sees Xiara. "Look who we have here, J-Man. It's little Miss train girl."
Xia slightly shifts into a defensive stance. "I've kicked your ass once, and I can do it again. Return everyone's things and leave before I make you."
Scab and J-Man laugh. "You may of beat us last time, but do you really think you can take all of us on?"
"I could," she admits, looking around at all the Jokerz. "But, I have a pretty kickass family that I don't wanna have miss out on the fun. Right, Xavi, Kad'r?"
Xavi steps beside her with an angry face.
Scab laughs. "This shrimp? Aww, guys, look at how cute he is with his angwy fwace," he coos.
"It's time for some payback," J-Man says, reaching out for Xia. His hand is shot away by a rubber bullet as he almost touches her. "Ahh, fuckk fuck fuccck!" He pulls his hand back quickly.
"Touch her, and I'll kill you," a voice growls.
Everyone turns to see Red Hood, standing up on a far table with a gun aimed straight at J-Man and on another table stands Megabat. Xia takes the distraction and uppercuts J-Man straight to the jaw and knocking him out completely. The Jokerz all immediately take out their weapons and head for the heroes, letting everyone in the room escape. Kad'r runs into the battle to help escort civilians. Xavi moves to help Bruce.
"Let them handle it," Bruce says, looking mainly at Terry. "Let's get out while we can."
Xia begins to move, and Terry grabs her wrist. "You heard Bruce, they can handle them."
She shrugs off his hand off. "Where's grand uncle Damian and grandpa?"
"You said they're strong," Terry says, looking to make sure Bruce and Xavi are still safe. "They can handle themselves."
"Yeah, alright," Xiara sighs before following out the doors behind Terry. It's not time to debut Batwoman just yet. Not when there's two highly skilled heroes that might come after me. I'd never get away.
~~~
After they quickly take down the Jokerz, cops come to take them away and distribute all the stolen goods back to their rightful owners.
Damian, Kad'r, and Jason all appear at the limo once everything was done.
"You all alright?" Xavi asks.
"Fine, pipsqueak," Jason answers, ruffling his hair. "Dami and I were moving people out the back."
"Are you all okay?" Damian asks.
"Yeah," Xia answers. "We got out after I decked that Joker."
Jason grins, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her in close. "I saw that. Very proud."
"I learned from the best."
"And don't you ever forget it."
...~~~...
Nanotech suits- Jason's in his 'hearing aids' and watch, Damian's in his watch, Kad'r's in his belt which they always wear
