Finally, back to a normal routine, I think to myself getting my black umbrella out of my backpack and opening it. The sidewalks were pretty calm for a Friday afternoon, especially since school was just let out; although I wouldn't blame anybody for not wanting to be out. It has been raining non-stop all day and it's a bit on the raw side out here. If I could, I would have instant transmissioned back to my house by now. But someone won't let me...
"WHAT!?" I exclaim, the top half of my body spread out across the counter in the kitchen
"You heard me young lady," Bulma says, staring me down with a stern expression, "You can't use your powers for the next four weeks and that is final." I can't help but fall back on the ground in defeat, Four weeks...There's no way in hell that's going to last.
"Bulma, isn't that a little excessive?" I hear Gohan say next to me, staring down at me with a bit of confusion. He turns his attention back to Bulma, who still stood her ground with her hands on her hips, "Yumi still isn't fully recovered, I get that, but four weeks?"
"So much of Yumi's energy was sucked up that even some of her life force went with it." Bulma explains, a firm but caring expression showing on her face, "If I could I would keep her here. But I know you still have school."
"Personally I would stay here." Harley chimes in from the corner of the kitchen.
"But what if something happens in that time?" Yugi asks, now coming up next to me and helping me back up onto my feet, "Four weeks is a long time."
Bulma looks to Gohan and smiles, "Then I guess Gohan is going to have to stick around for a while." she then looks to Yugi, "And you make sure that she doesn't use any of her energy. The more energy that's conserved, the shorter the recovery time."
Ugh, even thinking about it pisses me off, but there isn't much I can do. The heels of my loafers landed softly on the concrete with each step in attempt to not splash down on any big puddles. My bag's not too heavy, considering the fact that I am still making up school work (You all know why) and overall a fairly pleasant, dare I say normal, afternoon. But to me there is something missing, something just isn't quite right. It's almost too normal for everything to be right. What is it that's missing?
"Yumi," I hear the slightly whining tone of a familiar voice say as it echoes around in my head. "I'm bored." I hear Yuma say, her spirit already out of the bracelet and walking next to me. I smile finally realizing what was missing from my day. Ah, that's it, the who-know-how-old teenage spirit that lives inside my bracelet.
"Well I'm not entirely sure of what you want me to do." I say, turning my head towards her.
"Call Yugi and see what he is up to." Yuma suggests, a smirk lining her lips.
An incredulous expression surfaces on my face, "You realize we just left school." I tell her truthfully
"Yes."
"Yugi was in school today."
"I know."
"So you want me to call someone who we just saw not even five minutes ago?"
"Well he is you're boyfriend."
I sigh in frustration and pinch the bridge of my nose; this girl is going to lead to the end of my sanity, "I've have told you this multiple times in the past week; no one is to refer to us as a couple until I deal with Sebastian."
"Well then where's the fun in being a couple if you have to hide it?" Yuma points out.
I go to argue, my finger raised; but then I stop, a wave of sorrow suddenly washing over me. She has a point, but there isn't much choice. Sebastian went for Yugi even when we weren't "together", if he ever found out Yugi would be in serious trouble. "As much as I wish for Yugi and I to be a normal couple, we just can't; not yet at least."
Yuma huffs, raising her arms and interlacing her fingers behind her head, "Well I can see your reasoning behind it. It may be smart, but it's slightly - how do I put this...damaging."
"How do you mean?" I ask curiously, arching my eyebrow
Yuma tilts her head towards the sky, watching the clouds go by as we walk to my house, "I mean that Yugi and yourself will spend all your energy trying to stay away from each other. So when, if ever, you get the chance to act normally, you probably won't because it has become a habit."
"You mean that because we will put all of energy into acting as 'just friends' that we will become 'just friends'?" I ask, trying to interpret Yuma's reasoning.
"Kind of." Yuma says. She takes her eyes away from the sky and looks to me again, a small smile gracing her features, "But I wouldn't worry to much about it."
"Oi!" we hear a voice shout from behind us. Yuma and I turn around to see Yugi running down the sidewalk, his arm waving in the air to flag us down, "Wait up!"
Yuma leans in to my ear to whisper, "Just worry about the here and now. Enjoy the time you spend with Yugi." She gives me a slight wink and with that, Yuma disappears back into her bracelet. I sigh at my current state, pieces of my hair falling into my downcast view. I only wish things were a little less complicated. But I guess they can't get much worse.
The sound of pounding steps against the hard concrete begins to slow down as Yugi nears closer. His fast steps slow to a moderate jog and then to a normal walking pace. I pick up my head, a small smile curving on my lips, "Hey Yugi!" I say, trying to cover the confusion running through my head.
Yugi stops when he comes up next to me, sneaking under the umbrella, "Sorry I'm a bit late." He says, bringing up his hand to rub the back of his neck in slight embarrassment, "Joey and Tristan got detention again and they made me wait with them until it started."
I snicker faintly to myself as we being to walk towards the main street, "Did they get cleanup duty again?"
Yugi looks on ahead, his hand dropping from the back of his neck and going straight into his pocket, "Yeah, the entire second floor hallway has to be, and I quote, 'Clean enough to eat off of,' or something like that." He chuckles at remembering the orders from the schools janitor.
"That figures." I say, adjusting the strap of my gray messenger bag, "I wonder what it was this time. Did they start another fight in the lunch room?"
Yugi laughs out loud this time, probably remembering the events of last week when the destructive duo began a food war in the middle of the lunch period, "No, not this time. From what I was told, they were fooling around in the halls during class and accidentally knocked one of the teachers that was patrolling the hallways down the nearest flight of stairs."
I gasp, letting out a slight laugh, "You're kidding!" I ask stunned, "I knew those two could be a bit clumsy, but not that bad!"
"Yeah really." He responds, also letting out a light laugh, "The teacher is all right though, no serious injuries, but he's pretty pissed at them." Yugi looks to me, a smile of amusement displayed of his face, "Best part, the teacher has a class with both of them next term."
I can't help but laugh at the amazing predicament those boys out themselves in. It is just so like them to get into this sort of trouble, "That is just to perfect!" I say through my light laughter, "Those two never cease to amaze me."
An awkward silence seems to follow my last words; nothing to be heard other than the light sound of Yugi and my footsteps on the concrete along with the rain pounding on the umbrella above our heads. My bag bounced uncomfortably against my left hip, I adjusted it so that it would not bounce so much. Yugi looks to the ground with a focused gaze as though he were deeply in thought about something. I turn my head to get a better look, but then Yugi averts his gaze farther to the side. Hmpf, what's up with him?
"Hey Yugi, something up?" I ask, stopping him from walking any farther by placing a hand on his shoulder.
Yugi looks up to me with an obviously self-conscious look etched into his features, "U-uh, nothing." He says quickly. He takes a deep breath, "I-I was just wondering if you were free this weekend...to hangout maybe."
I feel this jittery feeling bubble up inside of me, something between excitement and nervousness. I want to smile, but I can't. I feel guilt begin to surface underneath the jitters, no realizing that trying to keep this relationship low-key is going to require more sacrifice then I originally thought. "Yugi...I would love to, b-but I...I don't think it's..."
"I know what your thinking, and no I'm not asking you on a date." Yugi says being unusually blunt. I look to him shocked for being so frank, but I can see in his eye that this is hurting him to say, "As much as I wish I was, I know that you think it's not safe. This is simply to see if we can help the spirits find out a little more about themselves."
Turning my gaze away I respond, "Sure. I'd be glad to come." I'm sad to have this happen, but as of now the only way is to hide. If there were any other way I would have thought of it by now. I want to have a normal relationship with Yugi, I really do, but like I said before Sebastian is a loose canon. I know for a fact that if he found out, he would come after Yugi again, "I'm glad you understand." These are the only words I seem to be able to muster in the given situation.
Yugi takes my hand and leads me down the sidewalk once again, "Come on, we should get you back before your Grandmother starts to worry."
_____________________________________________________________________________________
"So this whole thing is supposed to help us find something out about ourselves?" Yuma asks me as I walk down the sidewalk in the heart of Domino City. People pass me on my right and left, some in a rush and some just out to be out. Right now I'm heading towards Domino station, the place Yugi told me to meet him at after school. I'm a bit early, but I guess that's all right; gives me a bit of time to think to myself about things.
"Yeah," I tell Yuma, adjusting the sleeve of my black, cap sleeve crop-top, "We're just going to walk around town a bit. Maybe we'll come across something, anything, that could give you even the smallest of flashbacks."
Along with the graphic crop top im wearing a pair of high-waist, light washed denim shorts. I have a red and black flannel tied around my hips. On my feet are white tennis shoes. I threw my hair up in a ponytail today, just for the hell of it and also because it's hella hot. I put small gold hoops in the top and bottom holes of my ears as well as a small crystal in my cartilage piercing. I have a few gold bangles on my both wrists and the millennium bracelet on my right wrist. And for the first time in a while, I walked out of the house not looking like a mess.
Yuma hums in delight at even the thought of a small memory coming back, "At this point, anything would be a break through. Even if it's not a memory, but something that connects me to some point in time or someone from any time period."
A thought crosses my mind, a thought that had never crossed my mind before, "What if you and Yami are not from the same time period? What would happen then?"
From Yuma's look of surprise, I could tell that the thought had never dawned on her before, "What makes you think that we are not?"
Yuma's counter then got me thinking again, "Well...I'm not sure. You two look so much alike it would be weird if you were."
"What about You and Yugi?" Yuma says
"Well I didn't say that it never happens." I counter, "And plus we aren't even of the same race."
"And neither are Yami and myself," Yuma points out, "I have a tail as well, may I remind you, so I am also Saiyan."
"Have you ever..." I stop my sentence short, now realizing how stupid of a question it really is, "uh...never mind. I forgot."
Yuma looks to me suspiciously, "What is it Yumi?"
I look down to the ground, watching my leather boot clad feet alternate is step as they take me to my destination, "It's stupid. Just a random thought."
"You realize I can see those." Yuma points out, placing a ghostly hand on my shoulder, stopping me from moving. I look back to Yuma as she turns my body to look into the reflection of the nearest store window, "You were going to ask me if I ever once forgotten that I was Saiyan."
I stare into my reflection in the window, and I only see myself and not Yuma. Sometimes I forget that she is only a spirit, but I guess that's reasonable because I see her everyday. But besides me, I see the bustling citizens of Domino city behind me going about their business. They all walk past me, not paying attention to the girl just staring at her reflection in the window.
"I guess it's because when I walk down the street, no one notices me" I begin, "and that's because they don't give me a second thought. I know they see me, but they don't question my normalcy. I blend in so well on this planet; I look so human that no one can tell. And when I'm with my friends, they treat me as any other human would treat another human; and that's makes me forget that I'm not human."
Yuma sighs to herself, "Well I think it's healthy for you to forget that your different every once and a while. If it's always on your mind, you begin to obsess over it and soon it's just becomes unhealthy. And I know you well enough to know that it will come to that. Taking a break is not a bad thing for anyone." I look out of the corner of my eye to see a small, genuine smile gracing Yuma's face.
"Well if that's the case," I say, taking my phone and ear buds out of my pocket, "I'll take a short break now. At least until Yugi get's here."
Yuma nods her head as I plug in my earphones. "Alright." With that she disappears into the bracelet to take a short break too.
Hmmm, I'm thinking some pop is in order. Haven't listened to any in a while, I think to myself as I begin to scroll through my music. It's also been a long time since I have felt so at peace with myself. I guess there are many firsts for today. Who knows what the world has in store for me . It did not take long for me to hum myself into a deep sleep.
"Yumi...time to wake up." I hear someone say as they shake my shoulder in the slightest, trying to wake me without startling me.
"My god Yugi, are you trying to make her fall asleep again?" I hear another voice say now, a girl who standing a bit away I think.
"Well what would you rather have me do?" I hear the first voice ask. I open my one eye that is hidden from view by my arm. I see Harley walking towards me and she grabs my phone.
"Harley," I hear Gohan say right after I spot him, "I think she's-"
What ever he said next was cut off by my music being turned up full blast, "SOMEBODY MAKE ME-"
"WHAT THE ACUTAL HELL!?" I scream yanking my ear buds out of my ears, panting from the scare. I rest my elbows on my knees and hold my head in them, trying to calm myself down. I can't help but notice Harley hysterically laughing on the ground with her hands over her mouth, "If I could, I would blast you into next week."
"Please don't," Gohan says, "We already have one 'injured' person, we don't need two."
"Well this is an unexpected surprise." I say, standing up from the bench and wrapping my headphones around my phone, "What are you guys doing here?"
Harley finally begins to get over her laughing fit and stands up from the ground, "Well since you always seem to attract the attention of bad guys everywhere you go, we thought we would come along on this little date." She says dusting herself off.
"So this a double date now?" I ask, a smirk forming on my face as I notice Harley's face beginning to turn pink.
"Anyways," Gohan says, "I could use some food. We should grab something to eat and then figure out what to do."
"But first," Yugi and I say at the same time, "we need to bring the spirits out." And even at the last syllable I could already here Yuma protesting the idea, to bad.

~Yuma's P.O.V.~
"I can't believe they switched on us." I say exasperatedly, taking a sip of my milkshake that Harley had ordered for me. She actually ordered all my food; I still don't really know how to do everything in this time period yet. Call me old fashioned.
"Well believe it Yuma," Harley says, sitting down with Gohan as they finished getting their food, "Because we are going to show you guys what it's like to be out in the world. Call it a change of scenery."
"But how does this help us find out about our past?" Yami asks, taking a French fry from the bag.
"We'll go to the museum." Gohan suggests.
I sigh a bit, "Yumi did tell me that you're a bit of a nerd."
Gohan sweat drops look a bit irritated, "I say that because I saw something in the paper that Yumi's grandma was reading this morning."
"Oh yeah!" Harley says, "I saw that too."
If you didn't already know, both Harley and Gohan are staying with Yumi. Since our little incident with Sebastian, all of our friends have been on high alert. Yumi will stay with her friends most of the time and, when she's alone, will be on the phone with one of them. Everyone's been on edge. Occasionally we have Yugi stay over the house in case Gohan or Harley sense something near by. So far we have only had to resort to that once, but I'm sure that will happen many more times before we finally deal with Sebastian.
Harley gets out of her seat and goes over to the little stand with the newspapers in them. She grabs one and brings it back to the tables, "Here we go, right on the front page." She hands Yami the newspaper and he begins to read it over as Harley explains, "The stone tablet in that picture has the same marking as both of your artifacts. There's a possibility that they come from the same place."
"It's certainly possible." Yami says, passing me the newspaper.
Right away I see the picture, it stood out like a red dot on white canvas. It was just a piece of a stone tablet, a fraction of what it probably once was, but it had the symbol. The symbol of the Millennium items, and there was a striking resemblance; it had to be the same marking. And for some reason I feel this pull, like it's dragging me towards the museum.
"Yuma?" I hear Yami ask me, nudging me in the arm. I rip my attention from the paper to look at him, "You good?"
I shake my head out a bit, this heavy feeling beginning to cloud my thoughts, "Yeah, just spaced out." I hand Harley back the newspaper, "I say we go. The resemblance alone is enough to make me believe that they could be related."
"Then it's settled!" Harley says, tossing the paper back into the paper bin from her seat, "We'll go to the museum after our little day out."
I sigh, knowing that trying to argue going to the museum first is futile, Harley is a very decisive girl...once her mind is made up there is no changing it. "Alright, let's just not stay out to late."
"Easy enough." Gohan says, getting up to throw out his burger wrapper. Damn he eats' fast. "Your still recovering, being out late would not be the best of ideas."
"Then I know the perfect place to go!" Harley says, an almost evil smirk growing on her face; I felt my stomach sink a little. I have a feeling this will not fare well for me.
Harley and Gohan lead us down endless streets in Domino City. We turn down one street just to go down another, then we would make a wrong turn and have to turn back. This went on fro about a half hour before Harley finally figured out were the hell we were going. We were in the main plaza of the heart of Domino City. Tall skyscrapers stood all around and the sky could only be seen through the gaps of the buildings. Harley ran over to one of the store fronts, and right above the door said "Karaoke".
"Oh no..." I say immediately, now knowing what that evil smirk was all about.
"Oh yes!" Harley says, grabbing my wrist and leading me in.
"Please tell me we don't have to take part in this." Gohan says, looking slightly nervous as the group of us walk up to the entrance.
"You don't have to. But Yuma has to." Harley says, flashing me a smile, "I've heard you sing before, and I know you're good, so there is no complaining."
"I beg to differ." I say, trying to pull back on the girls strong grip.
Harely brought us all through the entrance. Before us was two separate gates to through; one if you were going to sing and one if you were here to spectate. Harley brought me towards the gate were the singers go, and on the way I mouthed 'save me' to Yami. He mouthed back 'you'll be fine.' I sighed, knowing that I was not going to like what I was getting myself into.
Harely went through first. She got a wrist band and the guy took a picture of Harley. I found this quite odd, what would they need a picture of her for? I stepped up once she exited the gate. The man gave me this bright orange wrist band with a microphone on it. He told me to step on this little x on the ground. I did as I was told and my picture was taken. I exited the gate and went to meet Harley.
The whole place was covered in blue. The ceiling was a dark blue, the walls a light blue, the floor a blue in between; everything down to the tables and seating was some shade of blue. Anything that was not blue was shiny. The tables had chrome accents on the top and along the singular leg that supported the table through the middle. T.V screens were all around the place and flashed pictures from what looked to be previous nights at this little club. They certainly look like they are having fun.
"Please, everyone take a seat." The karaoke club's MC says, taking the main stage at he front. The MC was pretty cute, I'm not gonna lie, and had to only be eighteen or nineteen. He has black hair that has these blue undertones; the sides of his head are shaved to a buzz cut and the top of his hair has been styled to stand up lazily. His eyes are pools of sapphire blue and his skin has a medium tone. He wears a white t-shirt under a light-wash denim shirt and black tight pants. I couldn't help but stare for a few seconds; he's really cute.
"Looks like the MC has you under his spell." Harley again took me by the wrist, pulling me from my entranced state, and lead me to the table that Gohan and Yami already occupy.
A light, dusty blush appears on my cheeks, "I-I don't know what you mean!"
Everyone in the club took a seat either at a table or in a booth. The MC looks over the crowd to make sure everyone is seated and listening "Hello everyone! I am Justin, your MC; and thank you for coming out this blazingly-hot afternoon! We all know how things work around here so let's get right to it." The MC, Justin and all the club's occupants turn towards the nearest tv screen. I look up and see pictures flashing across the screen; pictures of people who have come to the club to sing.
I feel my stomach sink a little seeing the process by which they pick the singers. I even saw my face flash across the screen a few times; making me all the more nervous about this. There's no backing out if you're picked. No wonder Harley brought us here...The flashing pictures begin to slow. I see Harley's picture pass, but I do not see mine. I sit there and beg that my picture does not pop up. I swear to god if I'm picked I'm gonna...
I close my eyes and duck my head down a little, waiting for the pictures to stop. I hear a chiming sound, signaling that a singer has been chosen. "Well, that's unexpected." Harley says under her breathe. I open my eyes, looking at my lap, "Yuma...you're up." Of course...
"Damn it." I whisper to myself, looking up to the picture on the monitor. It was true, I was up first; and by the look of the picture you could tell I was not to excited about the whole thing.
I stand up from my seat and MC sees me, "Alrighty we have our first singer!" He says with almost to much pep, "You wanna come up here sweetie?"
I feel my stomach flutter a little with him calling me that, Dear god what is wrong with me? I walk up to the stage slowly, weaving my way through the tables and chairs. I reach the extension of the stage that goes out into the crowd a bit, where the MC stands. He offers me a hand, "Here." He says, a smile gracing his lips. I scoff and look away as I offer him my hand to help me on to the stage, He knows I find him attractive and is eating it up; I hate those kinds of people.
"Now then, what name is it that you have to compliment that beautiful face of yours?" You could hear the whole club whistle and catcall; this made me even more embarrassed.
I cross my arms and scowl at this boy's f*ckboi personality, "Yuma." I state clearly.
"Well then Yuma," he begins, "I will lead you behind the stage and you will have five minutes to chose your song. Good luck to you." As Justin leads me down the stage and brings me behind the curtain, music plays in the background. I could hear it loud and clear as I stood behind the curtains.
Justin goes over to the corner and grabs a big book, "Here," he says, handing me a huge binder with the title 'SONGS' on it, "Pick your song from this. When you have it picked out, hit that green button and I'll come back here." Justin nods over to the green button on the wall, right by the stand where the binder goes.
"Thanks," I say absentmindedly. Justin goes out the curtains again leaving me behind the curtains alone.
I stare down at the book, knowing I am basically screwed because any song I know from this time is probably not in here. I sigh, opening the book to the never ending list of songs that everyone knows but me. Flipping through the book isn't helping much either. I see all these familiar titles, but I don't know any of these songs. I keep flipping and flipping and nothing stands out to me. But then I see this song, it looks familiar; the title looks to be the same as the one Yumi was listening to earlier. I didn't get a look at the artist, but if this is the same song I definitely know it well enough to sing it.
I close up the binder and bring it back over to the stand. I press the green button, which sends this siren-like sound blaring throughout the club, "Looks like Yuma picked her song!" Justin announces to the crowd, "I wonder what it is?" With that he comes through the curtains.
"This one." I say, pointing to the title in the book.
Justin smirks, obviously pleased with the song choice, "Nice choice, but it's a toughie. You sure?"
"I'm sure." I say, looking to him with confidence. He nods and hands me the microphone in his hand. He points towards the curtains, signaling me to go through.
He hits the track and music begins to play as I walk out of the curtain. I look to the T.V. screen, seeing a split screen of my picture and the title and artists name of the song; Shatter Me by Lizzy Sterling featuring Lzzy Hale. I picked the right song, awesome! I put the microphone in the stand and got myself settled in time for the words the start. The Lyric video began to play on the screen
I pirouette in the dark
I see the stars through me
Tired mechanical heart
Beats til the song disappears
Somebody shine a light
I'm frozen by the fear in me
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me
So cut me from the line
Dizzy, spinning endlessly
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
Shatter me!
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
If only the clockworks could speak
I wouldn't be so alone
We burn every magnet and spring
And spiral into the unknown
Somebody shine a light
I'm frozen by the fear in me
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me
So cut me from the line
Dizzy, spinning endlessly
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
Shatter me!
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
If I break the glass, then I'll have to fly
There's no one to catch me if I take a dive
I'm scared of changing, the days stay the same
The world is spinning but only in gray
If I break the glass, then I'll have to fly
There's no one to catch me if I take a dive
I'm scared of changing, the days stay the same
The world is spinning but only in gray
(Only)
Somebody shine a light
I'm frozen by the fear in me
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me
So cut me from the line
Dizzy, spinning endlessly
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
Shatter me!
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
It was as if during these four and a half minutes the world stopped and it was only me. I felt no worry, no sadness, only this light feathery feel. Everything stood still and the only thing I could see where the bright lights and my friends, nothing else. It was great, but I know that all good things must come to an end; and sadly this great thing came to an end all to quickly.
Everyone in the karaoke club was on their feet, clapping and calling my name by the time I came to my senses. The sea of people jumped up and down in excitement, but through the mob I could only see three people; my friends. And of those three the one that stood out the most was Yami. His eyes were wide, but there was this sense of amazement that he radiated. I winked at him and he smiled back. I jumped off the stage and the sea of people parted. I ran towards my friends and straight into Yami, who welcomed me with a tight embrace. Gohan and Harley pill on after a few seconds.
"That was amazing!" Harley says, pulling away to look at me more clearly.
"I had no idea you could sing like that!" Gohan exclaims, patting me on the back.
"Neither did I." Yami says, still not having pulled away, looking at me with eyes still full of amazement, "You were incredible."
I felt this heat rise to my cheeks and I looked away, "It was nothing."
"Well then," Justin says, coming back out onto the stage, "I can definitely say I was not expecting that. Let's all have another big hand for Yuma!" The whole club cheered and clapped once more. I smiled and bowed at the waist. "Now let's get on to the next singer!"
"Okay, time to scram!" Harley says, grabbing me by the wrist again and heading for the door.
"What for?" Gohan asks, coming up to Harley.
"I think Harely just doesn't want to sing." I say with a playful smirk appearing on my face.
"That." Harley admits, "and the museum is going close in a few hours. We still have so much more to do!"
"Oh boy." I say exasperated, "I thought this was going to be an easy day."
"Hell nah!" Harely exclaims, once we finally exit the Karaoke club. She turns around to the group of us and smiles, "This is only just the beginning!"
