"You're powerless...I'm always going to be in control and you'll always be powerless to stop me..." Sebastian's sharp voice echoed through the small room and through my head as I crouched down over my mother to protect her with my body. She was shaken up so badly. I don't think he physically hurt her, but by the way she was shaking in my grasp I could tell that he had done something to her. My back was to him, and I was too afraid to turn around. No matter how scared I was, my first priority was to protect my mother. She had no way to defend herself against him, but then again neither did I. I had no way of fighting against his telepathic abilities.
"Sebastian...leave us alone." I pleaded with him, trying to disguise my shaky voice. I was scared, I didn't know what he was doing behind me. I noticed I could see him, but I could only see part of him in the reflection of a mirror that was propped up against a wall just beyond where I was crouched on the ground. Seeing his face only made me feel sick. He was mostly covered by the shadows of the darkened room with only a small oil lamp illuminating the space. I could see his clouded over eyes squinted just a little from his lips curving up into a sickening smile.
"Oh love, not until I break you." He cooed in the most vile way imaginable that sent a shiver down my spine. My eyes widened as I could feel the tears brimming at the surface of my eyes, I felt so trapped under his gaze. I wanted to run away so badly, I knew I could and take my mother with me but his eyes paralyzed my muscles with fear. That's when I saw him raise twin swords into the view of his reflection, "And I'll make sure you remember that..."
I pulled my mother in closer to me, I didn't know what was going to happen next. Then I felt the body that I clutched so tightly go limp. No... A wave of panic rushed through me and I pulled away just enough to see my mother's face. But then I saw it...the face of a dummy body with a wig and some clothes on. He's in my head... Then I felt the sharp sting of the blades down the length of my back.
"Yumi!" I heard Yuma's voice echo throughout the room as I collapsed on top of the dummy that Sebastian had brainwashed me to think was my mother "Yumi, Wake up!"
I gasped as I frantically sat up from my bed, desperately clutching my back with both hands where I had once felt the blades run through my back. I hastily patted my back under my shirt, feeling the scar tissue underneath my fingers. It felt as it normally did...it was just that nightmare again. I sighed as I crossed my legs under my sheets and rested my elbows on my knees, holding my head up with my hands as I stared blankly at my bed in the dark. I could feel the sweat that had gathered at my hairline under my hands as my hands shakily took up bundles of hair in their grasp. I sat there unmoving for a minute, just breathing in an attempt to try to collect myself.
"Breathe Yumi," I heard Yuma's voice call to me in between my shaky breaths. I felt her ghostly hands gently grab my shoulders, by the way she held her hands on me, it felt like she was sitting in front of me, "That was just a memory, you're okay."
"What did you see?" I asked her sharply, still staring down onto the bed where my legs were crossed underneath the sheets.
"I saw enough," She says, pulling my hands away from my head. I look up towards her now seeing her spirit sitting back on her heels in front of me on my bed. I could barely see her, but the moonlight that shone through my skylight helped, "I could feel the darkness embedded in that memory from within my own mind room. I thought it best to go check on you and when I opened the door to your mind room..." She decided not to press on any further. Her usually sharp eyes had grown softer around the edges, "I never knew Sebastian gave you those scars." My room fell silent again, I didn't know what else to say. I just felt so defeated after the events that had transpired earlier today.
As I started to try to calm myself down, I could hear my grandma and Gohan talking through my bedroom door. Every now and again I would hear another voice that sounded familiar. I didn't feel like paying attention to what they were saying. I unraveled myself and reached over for my phone. I noticed that I was still in my uniform from earlier in the day, and it definitely had seen better days compared to the state that my altercation with the Frieza puppet had left it in. The first thing I noticed was a text from Yugi a few hours ago asking me how I was doing. I'll answer him in a little bit. Then I noticed an article that Joey had sent in a group chat of him, Yugi, Tristan, Tea and I that was titled "Is Kaiba's Newest Tech Too Realistic?" with a message after it that read, "Looks like the cat is still in the bag". What the... "There's an article out already about what happened today." I say to Yuma to change the subject.
"Really? What does it say?" Yuma inquires. I change positions to sit with my legs hanging off the side of my bed. Yuma then moved to sit next to me to read the article over my shoulder.
I clicked into the article and the first thing I saw was a full frontal action shot of the fake Frieza that had a slightly blurry image of me from the back with my super saiyan form but my tail out of sight. The story went on to say that as a part of Kaiba's Battle City tournament debut, he had decided to surprise the crowd and unveil his newest hologram technology that he plans to implement into his future duel disk systems. The seemingly violent and chaotic fight between a young girl with blonde hair who could fly and the purple and white alien guy was all projected using the company's tech with the help of some well hidden special effects machines to feed into the realism. There was even a statement from Kiaba at the end saying that despite how the tech may have made the fight scene appear, it was all programmed by Kaiba Corp scientists and that the tournament will continue on as planned.
"Wow Kaiba really came through." I say to Yuma, looking away from my phone and back towards her, "I wonder what my friends had to do to convince him to say that."
"I don't know," she says, "But if the tournament went on as scheduled that must mean that the public bought his lie."
"And that means that Yugi and Joey must have started going through their duels to make it to the finals," I add to her point, "I should call Yugi and ask him how he did in the tournament." I say as I go back into my messages with Yugi to quickly find the video call option.
"I'll leave you to it then," Yuma says over the dial tone before she disappears from beside me and into the millennium bracelet. I flip on my desk lamp so that I won't be shrouded in darkness when I try to talk to Yugi.
I readjust myself as the phone continues to ring and Yugi answers right as I get my back up against my head board, "Hey Yugi!" I say still not looking at my phone screen as cheerfully as I can muster to try and force myself out of the funk that the nightmare had put me in.
"Yumi!" I hear him as well as Joey, Tristan, and Tea exclaim through my phone speakers. The sounds of my other friends' voices surprised me, but I was still glad to hear them all.
"Everyone!" I finally settled myself in a comfortable position in my bed. I took one of the throw pillows I had lying around and propped my phone up against the pillow so I could see everyone, "What a surprise. I saw that Kiaba pushed forward with the tournament, how did it go today?"
Yugi had finally set up his phone towards the back of what looked like his kitchen counter so that everyone was in the video frame as Tea spoke, "Joey and Yugi kicked some serious ass! They're both going to the finals tomorrow."
"Not that I expected any different." I teased. Hearing that those two were moving on to the finals made me happy. It made me even happier to know that the fight didn't throw those two off their game, "Although I was a little worried about you, Joey."
Tea, Tristan and Yugi all chuckled at my comment but I saw a little sweat drop appear on Joey's forehead, "What do you mean!? Everyone trembled in fear facing the runner up from Duelist Kingdom!" He said flexing his arms and striking all of these different power poses.
I chuckled seeing Joey spaze around as he tried to flex his runner up title from Duelist Kingdom. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely nothing to sneeze at. It's just funny watching Joey be Joey, "I'm kidding Joey, I knew you could do it." I say, trying to get him to stop him from striking too many of these power poses before he hurts himself. Then I remembered that I still hadn't answered Yugi's text, "Also sorry I didn't answer your text Yugi, I was sleeping all up until a few minutes ago."
Yugi furrowed his eyebrows after hearing me apologize, "Yumi don't apologize, I'm glad you called." He said with his eyes growing soft and a small smile curling up on his lips. I couldn't suppress the smile that was surfacing on my face. I can't quite pinpoint what it was about that moment because what he said was so mundane, but I think hearing those words come from someone I really care about seemed to make my problems melt away even if it was just for a moment.
"Hey Yumi," I heard Tea say, bringing my focus back to the conversation, "Joey, Tristan and I were just about to head out..."
"We were?" I hear Tristan chime in, sounding confused.
Tea tries to subtly elbow him in the side, but it wasn't subtle enough to get by me or Joey from the slightly spooked look that crept up onto his face as he watched from across the counter. Somehow Yugi remained oblivious, but I think he was a little thrown off by what seemed like Tea's sudden announcement of their departure "It's getting late Tristan," She says matter of factly, "But before we go, are you doing okay? Do you need anything?"
"No-no I think I'm okay." I say quickly. I'm not sure why her question threw me for such a loop but I don't need my friends worrying about me tonight, "I'm just tired is all."
"That's pretty understandable." Tristan chimes in, "You really kicked that lizard guy's butt today."
"Lizard?" Joey questions. He cups his chin on his fingers as he thinks, "He gave me more newt vibes."
"Same difference!" Tristan said back, Yugi and Tea looked at me through the phone and then to each other both looking exasperated from the boys comments.
"Anyways," Tea cuts in, stopping the boys from continuing their little argument, "We're glad you're alright Yumi." She says with a genuine smile. She pulls her purse strap over her shoulder as she begins to lead Tristan and Joey out of frame by the arms of their jackets, "See ya Yumi! And Yugi, don't keep your girlfriend up too late." By the time she finished her sentence, her and the two boys were pretty much out of frame.
I saw Yugi blush a little from Tea's comment. He turned his head away from his phone and towards the staircase that led to the front door of his house, "You guys good to get home?"
"Yea we'll be fine, see you tomorrow!" I heard Tea say faintly, she was probably already halfway down the stairs with the two boys so the microphone only barely picked up her voice.
Well that was odd, I thought to myself not being able to really suppress the perplexed look on my face. Yugi had his head still turned away from the phone, but even from just looking at the side of his face I could see that he was equally as confused by the sudden departure, "Uh...anyways," Yugi started, turning his attention back towards me, "How are you doing? Like, really?"
My lips pursed together as I shifted my eyes away from my phone, gazing into the corner of my room, "I-I..." I didn't quite know where to start answering that question. All of those emotions from when I was crying in the alley were still there and that nightmare only added to the overall funk I've found myself in. To put it bluntly, I felt like shit.
I noticed Yugi move to grab his phone off the counter, "I feel like that might have been a stupid question." He states as he took his phone and began to walk towards his room.
I sigh as I run my fingers through my bangs and down the back of my head. My hand stops at the base of my neck, "No you got me..." I curl my legs up towards my chest and hug my legs close to me. I rest my chin on my knees as I look back towards Yugi with tired eyes. He had just set up his phone on his desk and propped it up against the back wall of his room. He sat down at his desk, leaning forward onto his desk to rest his chin on his crossed arms looking attentively at me through the phone, "I don't even know where to start, I'm still just processing what happened today," I continued, "I'm more worried about you and our friends though."
Yugi sighed as he straightened himself up, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked off to the side of the camera, "Honestly I am too, especially because of these rare hunters." He said absentmindedly. I don't think Yugi even realized what he said until his eyes widened after he spoke in that 'oh shit I shouldn't have said that' way.
My eyebrows scrunch together in confusion, "Rare hunters?" I ask him.
Yugi didn't answer me right away but I could see that he was focusing on something. My best guess was that Yami had come out of the puzzle and Yugi was listening to whatever Yami was saying to him. I saw Yugi's eyes shift to look to the side of him as his eyes relaxed but his face scrunched up, "Yami she doesn't need to know that..." I heard him whisper so quietly, I barely heard it. Okay, what is he hiding from me?
Then I hear two soft knocks on my bedroom door. I peel my attention away from Yugi and look towards my door, "Come in!" I raise my voice towards the door so that whoever is on the other side of it can hear me. The door opens slowly, which at first I thought was really odd. But then as the person stepped into the room, I unraveled my body to lean forward and my jaw nearly fell onto my bed from shock, "Mom?"
There she was, standing in the doorway to my room. The lighting of the hallway washed out some of her features, but even still I could make out the different shades of blue in her sweatpants and relaxed fitted t shirt as well as the colors of her black and maroon pixie style hair. Her eyes were exactly like mine, and tonight I could see they held a bit of wonder and relief in them. "Hey there peanut," she said to me in her usual silvery voice. She held a soft smile on her face to match the soft look of her eyes. I was astounded, I had no idea my mother was here. The last time I saw her was in the airport back in America three months ago.
"Mom?" I hear Yugi repeat in a confused tone. I had completely forgotten that I was on the phone with Yugi until I heard his voice come through my phone speakers again, "Yumi, is your Mom there?" I heard him question.
I never really talked about my parents with Yugi, or with anyone for that matter really. Ever since I was younger, it was a rare occasion that I stayed with them for any long period of time. I had started my training with Goku when I was very young, and I lived with him and his family during that time. Being in that environment was much more conducive to my progress since there were pretty minimal distractions. My parents would call every once in a while, but I wouldn't see them for months at time. Even when I did see them, it was maybe only for a day at a time. For a while growing up, it seemed like my parents kind of just left me with the Son family. The longest I think I ever stayed with my parents in the past ten or so years was for about six months and that was right before I moved to Japan to live with my Grandma. That long stay with them only really happened because Sebastian had attacked me with the twin swords.
"Y-yea," My voice got caught as I tried to speak, I was so surprised it felt like I had forgotten how to talk. I cleared my throat before speaking again, "My Mom is here..." I say distantly.
My Mom walked into my room, looking around as she came closer to my bedside. This was the first time she had seen my room in my grandma's place. She then looked towards me as she pulled out my desk chair to sit down next to my bed, "I'm glad to see you're awake, Gohan filled Mom and I in on what happened..." Then she suddenly stopped talking as her gaze went towards my phone that was still propped up against one of my throw pillows in front of me. Her eyes then shifted back to me holding what I thought was a curious 'who's that' look in her eyes.
"Uh..." I could still barely comprehend that my Mom was here. I pulled myself out of my shock to look away from her and back towards Yugi. He sat there quietly on the other end of the video feed looking shy, "Mom, this is Yugi," I say as I move the throw pillow and angle my phone so that both my Mom and I were both in frame.
Yugi lifted his hand to wave shyly, "Hi Mrs. Matao," He said soft spokenly, "It's good to meet you."
My Mom looked back to me suspiciously as she didn't move her head away from the direction of the phone but she looked to me through the corner of her eye. Without saying anything she looked down towards my tail that was laying lazily to the side of me and off the side of my bed. Her eyes then traveled back towards me and held a concerned look. Then I realized she was asking me 'does he know?' without actually asking me since my tail was just out in the open. I sighed when I finally realized what was happening, "Relax Mom, Yugi knows."
"Wait, what do I know?" Yugi asks in a confused tone.
"The whole alien thing." I respond plainly
"Oh yeah," Yugi says, "I've known about the whole Saiyan thing."
My Mom looks a little taken aback hearing Yugi's response, "Yumi?" she asks me in a stern tone.
"Mom he's my boyfriend," I say exasperatedly as I pinch the bridge of my nose, God I hate when she gets like this, I take my hand away and look her in the eye, "Besides, he was there when I got attacked so he would have known anyway."
"Boyfriend?" My Mom questions looking away from me and back towards Yugi with a questioning expression.
"Yes Mom," I say matter-of-factly, looking back towards Yugi again. He was sitting there nervously, I can imagine he was probably happy that he was sitting on the other side of a phone screen instead of being in front of me while this was happening.
All of a sudden, I can see something click in my Mom's head in the little window where we could see ourselves in the video chat. This look of realization came onto her face, "Oh...okay this is adding up now," She started, "I just didn't expect this to happen so soon...and how do you make that work with the spirits in your items?"
"It actually works out kind of nicely since the spirits are married..." I stopped talking as her statement and question actually registered in my head. My stomach dropped as a slight feeling of panic and confusion overcame me. What did she just say? My eyes shifted towards Yugi. I saw him gawk at the phone screen in disbelief of what he just heard my mother ask, "Mom...how do you know about the spirits?" I ask her as steadily as I can muster.
My mother sighed as the tight exterior she had put up melted away into a relaxed posture. She looked at me with wondering eyes and a small smile, "Because a young man came to me in my dreams many years ago and told me you were destined for this to happen," my mother started as she took my hand up in hers, looking deep into the eye on the millennium bracelet that gleaned against light coming from my desk lamp, "coincedently, around the same time your grandmother told me of the power it held when she had me give you the box that held the millennium bracelet nearly six years ago. The millennium bracelet needed to find the reincarnated princess so that she could become the vessel of her sister's spirit when the time came for the nameless pharaoh to return." Then my Mom turned her attention towards Yugi, "I just didn't think Yumi would have found the reincarnated prince so quickly."
"Don't you mean pharaoh?" Yugi asked my mom. I was also thrown off by her saying 'prince'.
"No Yugi, I meant prince," my mother clarified, "The brother of the nameless pharaoh who ultimately took over the throne after his brother's untimely death." My head slowly turned towards the phone screen to look towards Yugi once again. His surprised expression had morphed into what looked like shock and disbelief. Yugi...he was a prince?
I felt this wave of dizziness hit me as a vision flashed before my eyes. Everything in the periphery was fuzzy and out of focus, I could only really make out what was directly in front of me. My gaze was pointed towards the dimly lit stone tile covered ground as I was walking steadily behind this boy. It was hard to see clearly between the tunnel vision and the dim lighting. Form what I could tell, this boy leading me by the hand wore off-white baggy pants as well as these off-white and gold slipper-like shoes. I could see this piece of pointed black fabric with a white trim that moved in front of his legs as he walked. My frame of vision moved up towards the back of the boy's head. On the way up I could see this long golden cuff that went up the length of his tan forearm and he wasn't wearing a shirt. When the shift in frame finally stopped, I then saw that familiar spiky back hair with the maroon tips. No way... As if in slow motion, the boy turned around to face me, his golden bangs now visible and a soft smile on his face. That's when I saw that this boy, who couldn't have been much older or younger than me, had Yugi's eyes.
The vision had gone as quickly as it came and the threat of unconsciousness subsided. I couldn't take my eyes away from the phone screen as I compared the quick glimpse I saw in that vision to Yugi. Something deep within me was screaming at me that the boy from my vision and Yugi were in fact the same person. I remember back in Duelist Kingdom I had a vision where I saw this boy there too. My gaze must have been so intense through the phone screen as I saw Yugi waving his hands in front of the camera to try and get my attention, "Yumi! You there?" Once his words finally reached my brain, I shook my head out to try and pull myself away from the dazed state that my vision had put me in, "Did you just see something?" Yugi asked me again with a curious tone in his voice.
I nodded my head, still struggling to pull myself together, "Okay...there's a lot to unpack here." I say quietly as my gaze falls towards my crossed legs. I felt like I did last night again, that everything happening around me was spiraling into chaos and confusion, "And I don't think I have enough brain power to unpack it all tonight."
"That's okay," I hear Yugi say to me reassuringly. I pick my head back up to look towards him through the phone, "Yea this is a lot, but we'll figure it out together." I couldn't help but crack a small albeit weak smile after hearing Yugi say that to me, it made me feel happy to know that despite the uncertainties of these parts of our lives haphazardly unfolding in front of us Yugi and I were going to go through it together. I knew that the bond between our millennium items had intertwined my destiny with Yugi's, but I'm realizing now that this bond is more deep rooted than I had originally thought. Ever since we met, Yugi has felt so familiar to me in a way that I can not put into words, it's most of the reason as to why I've been okay with our relationship forming as fast as it did. It felt like we were picking right back up from where we had left off.
Yugi and I said our goodbyes for the night since I was tired and he needed to prepare for the finals tomorrow. My mother left me so I could go to sleep. But the discussion that took place tonight is definitely far from over.
~Yugi's POV~
After I hung up from my call with Yumi, I flipped my phone screen down onto my desk as I let out a deep sigh. I crossed my arms onto my desk and rested my head on my arms, closing my eyes to try and calm the tense headache that I could feel forming at the front of my head. I was exhausted from today, so much happened that my head was spinning from my thoughts racing all day between worrying about Yumi, getting through Battle City, all the new information that I learned about these rare hunters, and now from the newly discovered possibility that I was...am Yami's brother. And Yumi is Yuma's sister? We know Yuma and Yami are married since we found that out last night at the museum...this whole thing was beginning to get very complicated. To make it even more complicated, the addition of these god cards into the mix that the rare hunters are after is making me concerned.
Pretty much every rare hunter that Yami and I faced said the same thing, that the one to wield the three god cards would be deemed the pharaoh and have the power to rule the world. Those cards are part of the key to unlocking Yami's memories and probably Yuma's as well. I need to make sure that those cards don't fall into the rare hunters hands...into Malik's hands. Of all people to be leading that kind of card hunt, it had to be him...I was hoping we would have seen the last of him after he was with Sebastian in the warehouse. I know that Yami told me it might be best that Yumi knows this, but I don't need her worrying about the possibility that Sebastian and Malik are coming back for another joint force attack. For once, I want to be the one to protect Yumi.
