Chapter 11: The Puppet Master

Yugi's POV

"So what you're saying is that that guy," Tea stops, pointing over to the tall man with the sickly complexion who laid sprawled out on the street, "Is something called a Rare Hunter whose working for some creep called Malik and is really only in the competition to try and take the rarest cards?"

"Eh...kinda" Joey says, rubbing the back of his head, "He's after a specific set of rare cards called the Egyptian God Cards."

"But what makes those cards so special?" Tristan inquires, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

At this point, I was expecting Yumi to have chimed in since she knows a lot about rare cards, but I didn't hear her. I then realized that Yumi was not with our group. I step away from the group and look around the dissipating crowd that had gathered to watch the Duel between me and the Rare Hunter. I scanned the crowd, and didn't see her immediately, "Hold on guys, where's Yumi?" I say, peeling my friends away from the topic of conversation.

Joey steps up next to me, scanning the crowd as I do. He bumps me on the shoulder, distracting me from my search, and nods over in the direction of the fountain that lies close to the center of the Main Square. At first, I don't see anyone I recognize, but then a couple steps away from where they were standing and I see Yumi, standing alone in the middle of the square. I turned to Tea and Tristan, who was scanning the crowd in different directions, "Guys we found her!" I exclaim to them. Tea and Tristan bounce over to Joey and I. We all begin to walk over towards Yumi, "Hey Yumi!" I exclaimed, waving my arm back and forth to try and get her attention.

She doesn't respond, which is odd for her. Yumi looked startled; her posture looked stiff and on edge. Her tail had unwrapped itself from around her waist and was twitching behind her. "Shit, her tail is out." I hear Tea mutter from behind me.

But as we get closer I realize that Yuma is out of the bracelet floating next to Yumi. They both looked tense, Yuma more so than Yumi. Yuma floated next to Yumi with a similarly tense stance. Her eyes were wide and her mouth hung agape. Yami floated outside of the puzzle and next to me "What's up with them?" He asked me.

"I'm not sure Yami, but something has them spooked." And if something has Yumi and Yuma this spooked, there's something seriously wrong. The four of us come up to Yumi's side. Initially, we say nothing in the hopes that Yumi will peel her focused gaze away from whatever she is staring at. I noticed a couple of curious bystanders staring at Yumi, attempting to trace her gaze and see whatever it is that she is looking at. Thankfully none of them are paying any mind to her tail.

"What the hell is she staring at?" Tristan whispers under his breath, his gaze tracing Yumi's. He squinted hard to see what she was staring at, but the sun behind the tall building made it hard to look in that direction for long let alone see anything.

"Yumi," Joey breaks the silence that hangs like a thick fog among the group, "You look like you've seen a ghost."

At the sound of her name, Yumi's tail twitched again, but she did not break her laser focus from whatever she was looking at. "Yugi," She mutters shakily, "I need you to call Gohan."

"What?" I was surprised. I follow her gaze again back up towards the top of the building," What do you see?" But then at that moment I could feel a shift in the atmosphere, my stomach dropped and I could feel a slight cold sweat gathering at my hairline. I could see something, but I had no clue what it was. I could see this thing raise what looked like its arm and pointed it straight in our direction. Then I could see the little cracks of lighting that gathered around the thing, the lightning concentrated at the end of its arm. This is bad.

"There's no time to explain!" Yumi nearly yells, "I need you to evacuate the people."

"Yumi, you need to tell us what's going on!" Tristan exclaims from behind me. I'm not sure if he could see what I was seeing.

The lighting began to condense into a ball of light, "That looks like an energy attack!" I hear Yami exclaim. The crowd begins to take notice of the weird figure that stood atop the skyscraper. Murmurs began to erupt from the crowd and panic was beginning to settle into the masses.

The sky above Domino began to turn grey as thick clouds rolled in. The sky was dark, it made the large glowing ball very prominent against the dark backdrop. "Yumi! Say something!" The sound of lighting cracks erupted through the Main square, nearly drowning out the panicked murmurs of the duelists and spectators. The wind began to pick up, circling the figure that stood above the crowd. The ball of energy was released, hurtling towards the crowd of thousands.

Then everything happened so fast.

Yumi broke her focus and looked at me with despair and panic in her eyes. She was stiff, it looked like she was afraid to move. But then out of nowhere, something clicked. She spun on her heels, swiping her arm out in front of the crowd of people to get their attention, "EVERYONE GET DOWN!!"

Yumi disappears and reappears above the crowd of people, floating in a defensive position. With a loud roar, her purple aura erupted from her body, quickly shifting colors to gold. The crowd of people heeded her warning and all began to take shelter wherever they could. Her hair snapped from its normal tri-color state to a platinum blonde, her tail also changed from brown to platinum blond. She crossed her arms in front of her face, and this purple disk of energy formed in front of her. The energy blast was getting close. Joey grabbed my wrist and pulled me to the ground guiding me to behind the stone fountain not far from where Yumi was. I couldn't look away; there wasn't anything I could do to help her...but I needed to make sure Yumi was okay.

The ball of energy struck the energy shield, pushing Yumi back in the air and towards the ground. Even though I can not sense energy as she can, I did notice that the air felt different; it felt like a transformer had exploded. Yumi told me that that's kind of what condensed energy will feel like to an untrained person. I could hear her struggling to hold back the massive amounts of energy. Those in the Main Square all gasped. More murmurs began to erupt about what they were seeing. With a series of loud grunts, Yumi fought back as the ground began to crack under her feet. She pushed with all her might back onto the ball of energy, desperate to keep it from coming anywhere near the crowd of people. With another loud roar, Yumi pushed hard against the ball of energy and sent it flying back towards the figure. The ball of energy hit the top of the building with a loud crash and exploded, sending bits of debris falling towards the earth. Yumi disappeared from where she was and reappeared above the crowd of people where the falling debris would land on top of. She launched a beam of energy towards the debris, singing it to ash with her attack.

I was the first to stand up from the ground, I looked around quickly at all the people crouched down on the ground. They were all just waiting for this nightmare to end. Yumi floats down to the ground and begins to hoist people up from the ground pointing to them to go down the side streets and alleys to get away from the Main Square. The people run away from the square in all directions. "Yugi!" She shouts from across the fountain, "Get our friends and get these people out of here! That monster isn't gone yet."

My stomach drops at the thought, but that blast was huge, how is he still in one piece after that? I didn't have much time to think, so I ran to the closest group of people and helped them out of their hiding space, "Get as far away from here as you can! Tell everyone you pass on the streets!" Joey, Tristan, and Tea all ran around in different directions of the Main Square, pulling people out of their hiding spots and beginning to tell people to evacuate.

I turn back to where Yumi was, then out of nowhere, this white and purple figure with a large tail suddenly appears in front of me. They stand just taller than me, but they are much more built than I. The alien-like person has no hair and has these purple plates on his body that cover parts of his white skin. The eyes were haunting. There were no pupils, only a bright red glow. I didn't even see the person recoil their arm, but before I could even form a coherent thought about what is unfolding in front of me, Yumi appears between me and the figure and sends me stumbling back a few steps before I fall to the ground with a thud. Ow... It took a second for me to collect myself but then I turned back towards Yumi. She held the person's fist right in front of her face, the alien-like person looked at her in disgust, "Hey douchebag, your fight's with me." Her voice was soaked with venom, I barely recognized it. At the angle I was at on the ground I could see her piercing glare cut right through the person's head. Yumi gathers an energy attack in her opposite hand and uppercuts the figure under the jaw, sending them flying into the air.

I sat on the ground frozen in place, everything unfolding in front of me was a lot to process. Yumi turns her head towards me, "You alright?" She asks hastily, I could tell her mind was somewhere else. I pull myself out of my head, nod in response, and small smile curls onto Yumi's lips. She turns her attention back to the alien-looking person and suddenly disappears from in front of me, leaving some cracks in the ground where she once stood and a small trail of golden aura as she speeds upward towards the sky.

I tilt my head up to try and find Yumi, but I do not see her. This is insane...I shake my head out, digging my phone out of my back pocket. I dial Gohan as I get up off the ground to go and continue to herd more bystanders away from the Main Square. The phone rang a few times and by the time I heard him pick up I was tucked into one of the side alleys with a group of people, "Hello?" I say into the speaker.

"Yugi!" I breathe a sigh of relief when I hear Gohan on the other end, "I'm on my way already and Harley is with me. Are there any casualties?"

"What?" I responded in astonishment. He must have sensed the same thing that Yumi and Yuma sensed, "Uh...no it seems that no one got hurt." I say to him quickly, "You're on your way already?"

"Yeah, as soon as I sensed a duplicate of Yumi's energy signal I bolted," Gohan replies.

I paused for a minute, Did I just hear that right. I look frantically towards the sky in an attempt to find Yumi and the alien-like person. In between the bright flashes from their fight that gave off the sound of fireworks, for a split second, I could see them, and I definitely did not see two of Yumi, "Gohan that can't be right..." I pause again, still looking towards the sky, "Yumi's fighting this short, bald white and purple alien-like guy with a thick tail."

I heard a grunt come through the speaker on my phone and suddenly the wind sounded like it had picked up speed, "Freiza..." Gohan spoke in a tone that I could only describe as a mix of shock and anger, I couldn't even imagine the kind of look that he had on his face to go with that tone, "That's impossible, I saw him die when I was a kid."

A loud crunching sound flew through the air and instinctively I duck down covering my head just in time for this strong gust of wind to fly by. The people around me yelped and ducked as well, too scared to look back to see what happened as the small pieces of debris flew by our faces and hit our backs. After the ground stopped trembling from whatever caused that booming sound, I turned around to see the white and purple guy laying in the middle of an asphalt crater looking like he was trying to compose himself. Yumi sped into my line of view from the sky, driving her elbow down into the alien guy's chest. Another loud boom erupted around her and the impact pushed the guy farther into the crater, more of the asphalt cracked around him from the sheer force of Yumi's blow. I froze, Damn she packs a punch, "Yugi, you need to stay out of the way." I heard Gohan continue from my cell phone, "Yumi will hold him off until I get there." Then the line went dead.

Gohan's POV

"So you're telling me that Yumi is currently fighting this guy that you witnessed get cut into bitty pieces and obliterated by Future Trunks like ten years ago?" Harley says, trying to clarify the information that I had just relayed to her, "That can't be right. But at the same time, Yumi can't be fighting herself, that makes even less sense."

Even thinking about this makes my head hurt, "I mean based on the description that Yugi gave me that's what it sounds like." I respond back to her, pretty much shouting over the sound of the wind that's taking over my ears. "But it's bothering me that I'm practically sensing two of Maeyumi. I've never experienced this."

Harley and I finally reached the Domino City limits, and just ahead we could see the fight between Maeyumi and Frieza. From where we were, I could see that Maeyumi and the imposter Freiza were pretty much equally matched punch for punch. I was impressed considering Maeyumi's condition. But I can feel that she's beginning to get weaker. She won't be able to maintain her super saiyan form for much longer. As Harley and I got closer, I saw Frieza land a pretty hard kick to Maeyumi's stomach that sent her flying towards Harley and I. I felt a wave of panic rush through me, Shit!

"Incoming!" Harley said as we stopped in our tracks mid-air just in time to catch Maeyumi. She pretty much body slammed Harley mid-air back first. Harley nearly busted her nose on the back of Maeyumi's head. A grunt escaped both girls and right as Maeyumi had stopped hurtling through the air, she lost her grip on her super saiyan form and transformed back to her normal state. She went limp in Harley's arms, and Harley quickly had to grab Maeyumi by the waist so that she didn't start falling to the ground below. "Yumi! Yumi come on don't pass out on us now!" Maeyumi didn't respond to Harley's desperate pleas, she had expended too much energy trying to fight off Freiza in her weakened state.

That bastard...I looked towards the direction that Maeyumi had come flying from to see that the imposter Frieza had started flying towards the three of us. Without taking my eyes off the imposter Freiza, I spoke, "Harley, get Maeyumi out of here."

"Got it. Don't do anything stupid" And with the Harley flew down towards Domino City's Main Square. I noticed the imposter Frieza began to change course in an attempt to go after Maeyumi and Harley. Imposter or not, he's going down. I felt my blood start to flow faster and the electricity of my energy started to crackle around me. All within a split second, I transformed into a super saiyan, disappeared from where I was, and reappeared right in Frieza's path blocking him from getting any closer to Harley and Maeyumi. The imposter Frieza yelped in surprise and came to a sudden stop within arms reach of me.

Now that he was right in front of me, I could finally see the description that Yugi had relayed to me and confirm my suspicion. The being in front of me definitely looked like Frieza, besides the glowing red eyes and his energy feeling exactly like how Maeyumi's normally feels. He eyes me up and down trying to size me up, "Out of the way peasant," The imposter Freiza snarled towards me.

"Wow, you definitely got Freiza's attitude down" I responded, "But I don't think that's going to happen" Faster than the imposter Frieza could see, I stuck my left arm out in front of his face. I yelled out as I fired an energy blast at full force point-blank. The imposter Frieza didn't even have enough time to react and the top half of his body got caught in the blast. The blast was so forceful that the recoil sent me flying back a few feet. I recomposed myself and reinforced my arm by holding my left forearm with my right hand. I noticed that Frieza had not faltered from his position in front of me. A slight feeling of panic set in when I noticed this and I let out another roar as I put even more energy into the blast. There is no way I am letting this bastard get away, I'm ending this right now.

Then Frieza fell out of line from the energy attack and began to fall towards the ground. Surprised, I ceased my attack and brought my arm back down towards my body. I looked down towards Frieza's falling body preparing to advance another attack, What the hell!? I stopped dead in my tracks. As I looked towards Freiza's falling form, I felt my stomach twist into a knot. His head and most of his shoulders had been blown off from the attack...no, they melted off. What should have been a view into the inside of his chest cavity was completely solid and had the same color as his white skin. The edges of what had been blown off looked like they had melted similar to the melting wax of a candle.

Then all of a sudden his body stopped falling mid-air even though it still looked limp. Although the imposter Freiza looked dead, I could still sense the second Maeyumi energy signal at full strength. I furrowed my eyebrows together in confusion, There's something weird going on here. I begin to float down towards Freiza's limp body that seems to be floating mid-air, but then I notice through the clouds that he isn't floating mid-air, Is he lying in a kind of net?

I stopped again to keep my distance and to just observe. The net holding Freiza seemed to retract into the clouds below and with that, I could no longer sense the duplicate of Yumi's energy. Then the energy signal just suddenly disappeared. I started to hear the hum of an engine in the distance. Not even seconds later I saw an aircraft come out from underneath the cloud that it had looked like the imposter Freiza had been retracted into. All I could make out from the view I had was that the craft was unmarked and looked like a small cargo craft. Before I even got the chance to look at the craft, it hurried off in the direction I had come from taking the imposter Frieza with it.

Yumi's POV

I kept phasing in and out of consciousness. The last thing I remember was getting absolutely annihilated by a kick to the stomach and then body slamming into...someone I think. After that I vaguely remember myself being carried bridal style through the air, the next I'm bouncing a little and I hear quick footsteps like someone is running, and finally I'm sitting on a concrete floor leaning against a brick wall with my head tilted up towards the sky. I noticed the sounds of people's footsteps receding in the distance as I came to and what sounds like Harley and Yugi speaking around me. Their voices sounded far away, but as I became more coherent their voices sounded like they were right next to me.

"Are you sure Gohan handled that thing?" I hear Yugi ask, concern lining his words.

"Oh yeah definitely," Harley responds confidently, "I don't think it will take Gohan very long to make his way back here. He's pretty sure that he wasn't fighting the real deal."

"It's definitely not the real Frieza," I say groggily, now noticing that my stomach area is pretty sore from being kicked so hard. I wince a little not having expected the pain.

"Shit!" I felt him jump beside me, "Yumi are you okay?" Yugi asked me, it sounded like I startled him at first.

I nod as I open my eyes, I felt so groggy, "I've been better but I'll live." I first noticed that Harley, Yugi, and I were all tucked away in one of the side alleys adjacent to Dominos main square. I could see Yugi's legs outstretched next to me on my right and Harley was standing in front of me. I look up to her first quickly, then I look to Yugi, then past him into Dominos main square. I can see that police cars have gathered within the main square. The officers came in like full SWAT gear and most of them were running around the square, but I couldn't exactly tell what they were doing. "The police are here?"

"Pulled up about 20 minutes ago," Harley begins, bouncing off from the wall behind her to stand up straight, "They came barreling out of their cars one step away from guns blazing. Not that they would have stood much of a chance against the fake Freiza."

"None of these people would have," I responded to Harley. I looked around the alley we're in and no one else besides Yugi, Harley, and I were there. Where are our friends... I sit up away from the wall ignoring the protest from my aching muscles and stick my head out towards the main square. I scan through the small crowd of people that were still there. A wave of panic washes over my body when I don't see Tea, Tristan, or Joey. I remember that they were right behind me when Frieza had fired off that initial blast towards the big crowd. At that moment, all I could think about was the possibility that our friends had gotten caught in the fight and my body started to tremble. My eyes widen and I hastily turn my body towards Yugi. I grab the top of Yugi's arm hastily to get his attention and he tenses up a little from my sudden actions, "Yugi...where are our friends..." My voice came out shaky and tight as I was trying to hold back my obvious state of distress.

I could feel Yugi's muscles relax in my grasp as he realized what was happening. His eyes looked to me softly, he could tell that I was panicking. "They're okay Yumi, just breathe" He calmly put his hand over mine that had the shaky grip on his arm, led my hand away to let go of his arm, and gently led me back towards him to sit up against the wall again, "I got word from all of them, they're making their way back here now."

While hearing that brought me some relief, I couldn't hold my emotions in anymore. I felt so guilty, that all this destruction and panic was my fault. Freiza was obviously after me, if I were not here this would not have happened. I could have cost hundreds of people their lives...The tears I was trying so desperately to hold back flowed over as I started to sob. I shut my eyes so tight I could feel the strain in my face to try and keep any more tears from coming out. I covered my mouth with my hand in hopes to muffle my staggered breathing. I felt an arm snake around my back as Yugi put his arm around me and started to rub my arm to remind me he was still there. He gently nudged me towards him and I let myself fall into Yugi's side as he tried to silently console me. I tucked my knees into me as close as I possibly could and not even a second later I felt Harley put her hand on my knee to remind me that she too was also still there. The two of them stayed around me in silence, letting me just cry.

I'm not sure either one of them knew what to say, I certainly didn't know what to say. I was so angry; angry at myself for not being more cautious and at whoever is responsible for the Frieza look alike. I felt guilty for putting such a large number of people in harm's way. I was scared because it didn't take long for that thing to overpower me. My powers are still so screwed up and this fight probably cost me more recovery time. I'm helpless to protect myself right now and helpless to protect my friends and family. I'm so overwhelmed by these feelings and it feels like they are starting to consume me alive. The only thing keeping me tied to reality right now is feeling Yugi's thumb gently rubbing my arm back and forth through my jacket.

I felt Harley take her hand off of my knee. I also felt Yugi move his head off of mine and I felt him move slightly but he didn't let go of me. "Yumi you're okay, try to breathe with me." I hear Yugi whisper in my ear in between my erratic sobs. In a lucid moment, I started to take notice of the feeling of Yugi's chest moving as he breathed at the side of my body. It took a minute or so, but I eventually fell into Yugi's breathing rhythm and I could feel myself starting to calm down.

I picked my head up but kept my gaze towards the ground, wiping my eyes with the sleeve of my uniform jacket. I saw a pair of brown loafers and black socks come into my line of vision, "Here," I hear Tea's voice. I pick my head up all the way and look at her through my bangs with tears still in my eyes as she crouches down in front of me. Her face looked to me with sadness, but I couldn't tell exactly what she looked upset about. She outstretches her arm to me, holding a pack of tissues in her hands, "You did a great job Yumi."

My eyebrows furrowed together at her comment as I took the pack of tissues from her hand, "Tea..." I didn't quite know how to respond, her telling me I did a great job was so polarizing from the thoughts I was having.

"Yea!" I hear Joey exclaim from off to the side. I look over towards him as he walks towards me and as he crouches down to join Tea at my level, "Thanks to you, everyone was able to evacuate before the fight got too hairy."

I saw Tristan step up behind Joey. I looked up towards him and he flashed me a small smile, "We all owe you one."

I was so flabbergasted by what my friends were saying to me, do they not understand that all of this happened because of me? I look past Tea to see Harley first and see that now Gohan was now with her. If he's here then that thing is definitely gone and we're all safe for now. Then I look towards Yugi. He takes his arm from around my back and pushes me bangs to the side so he could see my face, "You can't blame yourself for this." he says.

My face relaxes more into a frown as I peel my gaze away from Yugi and look past him to the ground. "I'm sorry, but I don't think you guys are seeing this the way I am," I say to the group. I clench the pack of tissues that Tea gave me in my hand, "That thing was after me. Had I not been around it would have never come here."

"What are you saying Yumi?" Tea asks, her voice filled with concern as she was trying to understand what I was saying.

"I think you all are safer without me around." I start, my voice slightly shaky still. I take in another deep breath to steady myself, "I think for the time being it's best if I'm not around. I'm not strong enough right now to guarantee your safety." Silence fell upon the group. Their silence told me that they all knew that I was right.

"Is there another way?" Tea asked softly. I brought my gaze back up from the ground towards her. Her eyes looked sadder than before, "None of us want you to go..."

I felt a pang in my chest hearing Tea say that, it definitely was not making this situation any easier. By this point, I had pretty much made up my mind. I didn't quite know where I was going to go. I couldn't stay in Domino with my grandmother, she had no way of protecting herself if something else like the fake Frieza were to come after me. West City isn't a great option since it's still in a city but at least Vegeta lives there so I know I have some protection. I could go stay with Gohan, but then I would be putting his Mom and little brother in danger. It doesn't seem like I have any great options...

"I don't think going too far away from home is the right answer." I hear Gohan chime in suddenly, "If my hunch about that fake Frieza is right, then Yugi and the rest of your friends are going to have to have a close eye on them right now. Especially after today."

I look at Gohan in confusion, "Your hunch?" I ask him, "You know what's going on?"

Gohan shrinks back a little, rubbing the back of his neck as the whole group turns to look at him, "W-well it's just a theory," He starts.

"A theory is better than nothing," Yugi says matter of factly, "Tell us"

"I believe that the fake Freiza that was here today came from whatever Sebastian used the energy he stole from you for." I felt a cold sweat develop on my hairline as he continued. I recalled the few seconds I had touched the fake Frieza as I was fighting him and I noticed that his body didn't feel warm or like skin. It felt like I had punched a test dummy. It felt similar to what Yuma's fake body felt like when she was captured by Sebastian, "That fake Freiza had the same energy signal that Yumi normally gives off and no two beings have the same energy signal. I blasted the things head and shoulders clean off but the energy signal did not falter."

Harley's eyes widened in concern, "So he's still alive?"

"I'm not sure" Gohan responds quickly, "I doubt it, I don't think he was alive to begin with. I think the fake Freiza was just a vessel to hold Yumi's spirit energy, but I believe that Sebastian is the puppet master."

I felt my body starting to tremble again, both from anxiety and anger. What little bit of energy I had left was beginning to flare up in little sparks that danced across my arms and legs ever so subtly. Yugi took my hand in his, and immediately I started to try to collect myself. I didn't want to shock him. "I already knew that Sebastian could make me a target again," Yugi starts, "But if Gohan is right, Sebastian probably knows that the rest of you are also close with Yumi since he saw you here and in Duelist Kingdom."

I slouched down against the wall in defeat. I knew Sebastian wasn't gone but I was hoping to not have to deal with him again anytime soon. I felt my anger get washed over by a wave of sadness once again as the reality of the situation was beginning to set in. Gohan's theory made a lot of sense, it would explain why I couldn't sense anything coming from the fake Frieza. But because of this, Sebastian now has a whole set of new targets to utilize in trying to get closer to me once again. Why can't he just leave me alone...
