Attempt 15

Quentin and Julia sat in the cafeteria at the incredible Brakebills. Both sipping on their favorite drink of choice, before something began to feel a bit strange.

Julia looked around curiously, wondering why the cafeteria had suddenly gotten very cold and damp in feeling.

"Quentin?" she asked in concern, looking around again to see she was completely alone in a forest, by the looks of it.

She stood up from the stump she had magically been sitting on, and walked in a slow circle, always keeping the stump in sight, as she tried to get her bearings.

"Quentin!" she yelled at the top of her lungs.

"He's not here." said a pleasant but young female voice.

Julia whipped around to see a young girl standing on the stump. She frowned, wondering where the girl had come from and how she had missed her.

She immediately put her hands out defensively, ready to cast a battle magic spell on a whim.

The girl giggled softly. "You can't hurt me, not here." She said, casting a spell to make an orb appear in her hands. Inside the orb was Quentin, wrapped tightly in spellbound chains.

"What the hell did you do to him?!" Julia demanded angrily.

"I didn't. I am here to warn you, he is in grave danger. Do not let him go to the fountain tonight." the girl warned firmly.

"Why? Who are you?" Julia demanded again. She still had her hands ready, knowing it may mean the difference between life and death, should the girl strike at her.

"You don't know?" the girl asked teasingly. "You do know that you are in Fillory, right?" she asked moments later, before Julia could answer.

Julia's eyes widened in shock and disbelief. "Fillory?! How?! Never-mind. If I am in Fillory, you must be Jane." she said, disbelief and doubt dripping in her tone.

"Yes, I am. Now its time to go. Quentin CANNOT go to the fountain tonight." Jane repeated firmly, before a flash of blinding light put Julia back in the cafeteria.

Julia gasped softly, while looking around in shock. First she searched for Jane, then after remembering what Jane had said, searched for Quentin. Neither of which was anywhere to be seen.

"Quentin?" she called, causing a number of the other students in the cafeteria to look at her in annoyance.

"We are trying to study." Alice growled angrily.

"I need to know where Quentin is, then I'll shut up!" Julia snapped, not at all in the mood to talk to the girl that was set on destroying her friendship with Quentin.

"He said he was going to study somewhere that was quieter." Kady said, looking up from the paper she was studying with Penny.

"Is everything okay?" Eliot asked, walking up with a drunken Margo on his arm.

"No, Quentin is in danger." Julia snapped, getting really tired of her best friend's group of crazy and drunken friends.

"How so?" Margo asked, sobering up rather quickly. Even Alice looked less pissed off, and seemed more concerned for her boyfriend's safety.

"I don't know! Jane Chatwin talked to me in Fillory. She said he can't go to the fountain." Julia explained in exasperation.

The whole group sat there in stunned silence, for what felt like forever.

"Uh... too late. He's already at suicide fountain." Penny said, looking like he was zoning out. "He's not alone, either." he added, sounding a bit uncomfortable.

"What?! Who is he with?!" Julia demanded anxiously, jumping to her feet.

"An older gentleman with six fingers." Penny replied in confusion, before returning back to normal. "Something about that man felt off. I don't think he is a professor here." he added, with a mock shudder.

Julia ran out of the cafeteria, followed closely by Eliot, Margo, Alice, Kady, and Penny.

They all ran out to the fountain in the courtyard, only to find that there was no fountain visible, and only a churning wall of moths could be seen.

"Quentin!" Julia screamed, casting a line of fire at the moths.

Instead of getting rid of the moths, the sea of fluttering creatures merely parted the way to show them that Quentin, standing frozen, was in fact beyond the swelling mass.

As soon as the fire dissipated, the moths closed the wall again, as if nothing had happened.

"Damnit!" Alice yelled, looking at Julia in annoyance. "Any other bright ideas?" she asked rudely.

"Yes, actually, I have one more. Penny, can you transport us into the box made of moths?" Julia asked, knowing the traveler had been practicing taking people with him when he traveled.

Penny bit his lip uncertainly, before nodding slowly.

"I can try, but I am not making any promises." he said, his breathing picking up.

"Hey, you got this." Kady told her boyfriend encouragingly.

Julia nodded her agreement, before casting another line of fire at the moths, in the hopes that they would be shown Quentin's condition.

To her dismay and relief, the moths parted enough to show Quentin now being swarmed by thousands of moths, but he still appeared to be frozen.

"Hurry, Penny, the moths are trying to smother him." she exclaimed, causing the Beast to whip around and look at her.

The Beast spoke briefly, before gesturing towards Julia, Penny, Kady, Alice, Eliot, and Margo.

No sooner did he gesture towards them, were they surrounded by a fluttering sea of moths.

The moths flew close, stinging and cutting them with their legs; while other moths landed on them, biting and drinking their blood in large quantities.

"Don't let them bite you!" Julia cried, as she watched Eliot and Margo drop to the ground lifeless and pale.

Her eyes widened in horror, as she watched Kady and Penny succumb to their wounds next.

"Alice!" She cried, fighting to the best of her ability against the onslaught. Try as she might, she couldn't stop the moths from stinging, cutting, or biting her.

Suddenly the moths stopped, and flew back to the Beast, leaving behind a very cut up and bloody Julia. She looked around in shock, her eyes landing on Alice, who was completely unscathed.

"I'm sorry, Julia. He promised to help me get my brother back." Alice said calmly, casting a spell that snapped Julia's neck before the girl could respond.

Quentin watched in disbelief, as Alice walked up to the Beast pleasantly.

Alice waved a hand at Quentin, wrapping him in chains that he could not break or move.

"Would you care to do the honors?" The Beast asked Alice. "A life for a life, your brother's debt will be paid." he added quickly.

"Of course." Alice said darkly.

She waved her hands in the air, casting a spell that lifted Quentin into the air and dropped him into the suicide fountain.

"I'm so sorry." she whispered, before Quentin's head sunk beneath the water's surface.

The Beast laughed maniacally, casting her same spell. He lifted her into the air, but before dropping her in the fountain, made her brother Charlie appear.

"All you had to do was betray your friends and lover." Charlie said, laughing loudly.

Alice watched in dread, as he brother cast the spell that snapped her neck, and dropped her in the fountain, she had just dropped Quentin into.

Moments later, Jane Chatwin walked up to the fountain, tears in her eyes to see the horrors left behind. The Beast was gone, but the courtyard was littered with the bodies of Quentin's friends and classmates.

As a sob passed her lips, she cast the time-loop spell, praying she never see such death and destruction again.
