six, wells
BETH sat on a tree stump, her mind elsewhere than the camp. Her childhood friend, someone she knew all her life, Wells Jaha, was dead. She didn't know how to process it, she didn't know what to think about it all. Her and Jasper were speared miles from here, but Wells? He was killed right outside the gates. And it terrified her.
Outside of the gates currently is Octavia and Jasper taking a small walk. It's his first time up since being speared, Beth's second, as she went to the funeral for Wells. Beth gets up and starts walking around, tired of sitting down. It was making her go crazy. She passed a pissed off Murphy who was yelling at another kid. If she had the energy, she'd yell back at Murphy, but she didn't, so she wasn't going to.
While walking near the gates, Octavia and Jasper almost run into Beth as they rush back to camp. "Hey, what's wrong?" Beth asks the two with a worried look. Jasper doesn't say anything and heads to the dropship as Octavia grabs Beth's arm.
"Can you come with me to get Bellamy?" Octavia asks, receiving a weird look and a nod.
A few moments later, the two were in a tent with a small makeshift table. Bellamy, Jasper and Clarke had joined the two as they all looked down at the table that held a knife and two of Wells' fingers.
Clarke was the first to speak up. "That knife was made from metal on the dropship." The blonde says, running a hand through her hair.
Octavia looks up at her. "What do you mean?"
Clarke looks between Beth, Jasper, and Octavia. "Who else knows about this?"
Octavia shakes her head at the blonde. "No one. We brought it straight here." Clarke nods at her.
"The metal was from the dropships. That means no grounder killed Wells. It was one of us." Beth spoke up. She was stressed and in pain, and the last thing she wanted to deal with was a murderer.
"So there's a murderer in camp?" Jasper asks the group.
Beth nods at the boy. "That isn't old news. There's more than one murderer in this camp. We need to keep quiet about this. It can't get out to anyone else. They'll panic."
Bellamy nods at Beth. "She's right. We go out there and accuse anyone, and they'll all go nuts."
Clarke stares at the knife for a moment before grabbing it and looking it over more closely. She glares at it before going to storm out, but Bellamy and Beth stop her. "Get out of my way, Bellamy." She says, looking up at him.
"Clarke, be smart about this. Look at what we've achieved... the wall, the patrols. Like it or not, thinking the grounders killed Wells is a good thing right now." Bellamy explains to her.
"A good thing for you, you mean?" She asks him. He looks at her, slightly hurt by her words. "What keep people afraid, and they'll work for you? Is that it?"
Bellamy rolls his eyes. "Yeah, that's it. But it's a good thing for all of us."
"Clarke, the fear that they have for the Grounders is getting that wall built. And you can't just walk out there and ask the killer to step forward. You don't even know who's knife that is." Beth says to Clarke, who gives her a look of disbelief.
She shakes her head. "Really? JM John Murphy." Clarke says, holding up the knife for people to see the initials. "The people have a right to know." Clarke says before quickly pushing past the two and out of the tent, right up to Murphy. "You son of a bitch!" She yells in his face, pushing him as the others rush from the tent.
"What's your problem?" He asks the blonde, pissed that she's yelling and pushing him for no reason.
She holds up the knife and shows him. "Recognize this?" She asks the boy.
He looks at her, confused. "That's my knife. Where'd you find it?" He asks.
She glares at him as she says, "Where you dropped it after you killed Wells."
Beth sighs at her words, having a feeling none of this wasn't gonna end well. "Where I what?" Murphy asks the girl, now extremely confused on her accusation. "The Grounders killed Wells, not me!"
"I know what you did, and you're gonna pay for it." Clarke tells the boy.
John scuffs as he looks at her, asking, "Really?" before looking over at Bellamy, who stood next to Beth, Octavia, Jasper, and Monty, who came from the dropship after hearing all of the yelling. "Bellamy, you believe this crap?" He asks the Blake man, but Bellamy doesn't say anything back.
"You threatened to kill him!" Clarke tells the boy. "We all heard you. You hated Wells."
John shakes his head in disbelief. "Plenty of people hated Wells, his father is the Chancellor who locked us up!" He exclaims to the group, confused on why no one else was speaking up for him.
"Yeah, but you're the only one who got in a fight with him." Clarke tells him.
"Yeah, I didn't kill him then, either." Murphy tells her.
Octavia chimes in, confusing both Beth and Jasper. "Tried to kill Jasper and Beth too."
"What?" They two that got speared exclaimed.
Murphy scoffs at the Blake girl. "Come on, this is ridiculous. I don't have to answer to you. I don't have to answer too anybody."
"Come again?" Bellamy asks the younger boy, with a raised eyebrow.
Murphy looks back over at him. "Bellamy, look, I'm telling you man. I didn't do this."
"They found his fingers on the ground with your knife." Bellamy says to him, not finding another conclusion to what happened.
"I say we float him!" The boy John was messing with earlier, Conner, yells out to the crowd.
"No!" Beth yells at them, but they don't listen.
And then the chaos started. Murphy was cornered by a bunch of random delinquents, and they had pushed him down the hill, yellling to float the poor boy.
---
It took Finn rushing in to stop all of the chaos. Finn was rushing to cut him down along with Beth's help as a small voice yelled out from the crowd. "Murphy didn't kill Wells!" Everyone looks over at a small girl, no older than 12. "I did!" No one said anything for a moment before Clarke and Bellamy grabbed the girl and rushed off to their tent, with Murphy outside yelling to come out.
Beth was too tired to deal with this and way too much pain to try and fight with anyone right now. She looks over at Jasper and Octavia, "I'm going to the dropship with Monty." They both nod at the girl, and she walks away to the dropship.
"Hey, Mont." She says to him as she walks in and sees him sitting there trying to work on contacting the Ark.
"Hey B." He says back, not looking up from his work.
She sits down next to him, holding her legs in her arms and resting her head on top of her knees. "Any luck?"
"None so far." He says to her, and she nods back.
The two sat there for a while, working on the devices as Bellamy, Clarke, Jasper, Octavia, and Finn joined the two. Monty had found a way to contact them,
"Will we be able to talk to them?" Jasper asks his best friend.
Monty shakes his head. "No. It's more like morse code." He replies back before looking up at him best friend. "You want to do the honors?" He asks the boy. Jaspers smiles and nods before taking the wires. "That port right there." He tells Jasper, who does so and connects it to the port then after a second, everyone with the wristbands feel a sharp pain in their wrist.
"Ow! What the hell?" Beth asks as she grabs her wrist as the light goes out in the bracelet Monty was using to contact the Ark.
"What happened?" Jasper asks the boy, confused.
Monty sighs. "It didn't work. I think we fried all the wristbands." He says. Finn and Beth look at each other, upset. Finn storms out of the dropship with Clarke following. Beth sighs, wondering what was going on with the two.
Jasper goes at sits by the wall, Octavia following and sitting in front of him. "Sit there at your own risk. I think I might be cursed."
Beth scoffs. "Hey, then we're both cursed."
Octavia shakes her head at the boy. "Then call me a risk taker. And Jasper, you're not cursed." She looks over at Beth. "Neither of you are."
"I'm unlucky then." He says to her.
"No. Brave." She tells him.
He scoffs. "Brave? For getting my face bashed in or for ruining any chance to contact the Ark?"
"No, for standing up to a bully and trying to help everyone."
"Yeah." He says. "And failing, both times." Jasper says.
"I didn't see anyone else step up. Did you? I don't care how things turned out. You were brace to try. And bravery is always rewarded." Octavia says to him before kissing him. Beth and Monty share a look before high fiving. Octavia then looks over and smiles at the two before going downstairs. Monty gives Jasper a thumbs up as Beth nods at him, both smiling at the Jordan boy.
Beth looks down at her wrist, her smile slowly fading as she realizes there's no way to contact the Ark, and with the wristbands all gone, they think they're dead. Beth's father thinks she's dead, and Beth hated that thought.
---
Marcus Kane walks down the hall towards the control room. He had just arrested Abby Griffin for helping Raven Reyes go to Earth.
He walks into the control room, looking up at the board. The color drains from his face as he sees all of the boxes darkened and all saying 'Transmit Terminated'. All of them. He looks at Beth's box, his heart breaking.
"They all just went down." Jackson spoke.
"They're all dead." Someone else spoke.
Kane looks around at the group and then back to Beth's box before leaving the room.
He gets back to his living quarters, slamming the door behind him before grabbing a bottle and a glass from the cabinet. He puts them down on the table before sitting down in a chair. He looks around at the living quarters he once shared with his wife and daughter. He pours a glass before downing it. He puts the glass back down, filling it again and dowing it. He sighs, regretting ever sending his daughter down to Earth.
---
Beth sighs as she walks around through the woods. She had told Monty and Jasper that she was just going for a walk. She didn't tell them it was outside of the walls. She didn't want to stay in there any longer. She was pissed there was no way to contact the Ark. It was no one's fault and it was a mistake, but she was still pissed.
She ended up walking to a small river. The beautiful moonlight lighting up the river and the woods around it.
Beth sits down, not a care in the world as she just thinks of everything going on in her life. The Ark was dying, and there was nothing she could do about it, and she hated it.
A few tears fall from her face as she thinks about her family, he dad, grandmother, and Raven all still up on the Ark. She angrily wipes the tears away.
You cannot be weak. Not now, not ever. Kane's aren't weak.
"I refuse to be weak." She mutters to herself.
A branch breaks in the distance, causing her to snap from her thoughts. She jumps up and looks behind her but doesn't see anyone. She looks around once more before turning back in the direction she was originally stadning in. Her eyes widen as a grounder stood a few feet away from her. "Fuck." She mutters to herself as the grounder just stares at her.
She was confused on why he was just standing there, looking at her. She wasn't sure if she was about to get speared again.
"Please don't kill me." She says, breaking the silence. "I won't tell my people I saw you. I promise." She says to him.
He doesn't say anything, so she gives him a confused look. "So no killing me?" She asks. Oh my, Beth, why are you so stupid?
"No." He says to her, finally speaking.
She looks at him even more confused. "Why not?" Am I on drugs or something? I'm gonna actually make him kill me.
"Beth Kom Skaikru." He says to her.
"You know my name?" She asks and he nods at her. "You guys have been watching us since we landed, haven't you?"
"Sha." He says back, which Beth took as a yes.
"I'm gonna go with yes." She says and he nods. "Why did your people spear me and my friend?"
"Maun weather ste nou chit yu think em ste." He tells her.
She looked at him confused, shaking her head slightly as she didn't understand what he was saying. "Something about Mount Weather." She says. She thought for a moment. "You guys don't want us there, why?" She asks him.
"It is not what you think."
She nods at him, not wanting to question him too much. She asks him one last question. "What's your name?"
"Lincoln."
She smiles at him. "Nice name." She says and as he was about to say something, he looks up to the sky. She follows his gaze, seeing a pod flying down from the Ark. "Well I'll be damned." She says to no one. She looks back at Lincoln, seeing him already looking at her. The two stare at one another for a moment before Lincoln spoke.
"Get back to your people." He tells her.
She nods at him before looking once more at the falling pod, then back at him. "Will I see you again?" He gives her a confused look but nods. She smiles back at him before taking off in the direction of camp.
He stood there watching as the beautiful red head ran through the trees and back to her camp. He stood there confused with their interaction. He was told that if they ever encounter the sky people, they weren't supposed to leave, but this is the second time he's let Beth go, and he couldn't figure out why.
