FOURTEEN.
Beth stood at the exodus crash site, looking around at all of the ash and smoke that was still spewing out from some of the machinery. Everything, and everyone who could have been on it, was burned. Nothing left but the ashes and the small fire piles.
Finn watches as the young Kane girl just stood there, staring at the ashes of the wreck she believed her father to be on. He knew she was going through so much pain he just didn't know how to fix it for her.
"Beth, stop!" Raven yells out suddenly as Beth is about to walk over some liquid. The Reyes girl rushes up to her.
"What is it?" Beth asks, looking at the fuel that dripped down from another piece of the exodus ship. "Rocket fuel?" The Kane girl asks, not an emotion in her voice. She had been crying since last night and she was tired. She was tired of crying, tired of being weak.
"Hydrazine, highly unstable in its non-solid form. If this stuff meets fire, we're all pink mist." Raven tells her. Beth nods, knowing not to touch it or light it on fire. "Fire in the hole!" Raven yells, causing everyone to duck as she throws something. There was a small explosion where she threw it. Raven looks over at Bellamy. "We need to clear the area."
Bellamy nods at her. "Okay, then." He says. "We move in formation, no straggling, weapons hot." Bellamy says to everyone. "We gotta get back before dark." He calls out, and they all start heading back to camp.
Beth looks back at the exodus site, sighing. Finn puts his hand on her back, helping her and guiding her back to camp. The two share a small weak smile as they walk.
----
It wasn't calm back at camp as the group thought it would be. A kid ran up to the group, telling them that John Murphy was back. Beth and Bellamy share a look before they both take off to the dropship.
Beth's eyes widen as she sees Murphy bruised and kneeling in a corner. "Where is he?" Bellamy asks, not seeing him at first. He looks at him angrily. "Everyone out except Derek and Conner! Now!" He commands, and they do so. Beth stays in her spot, looking at Murphy. She didn't know what happened for him to get all these bruises, but she knows no one ever deserves it.
"He claims he was with the grounders." Derek tells them. "We caught him trying to sneak back into camp."
"I wasn't sneaking." Murphy spoke up, his voice horse. "I was running from the grounders." Beth leans against the back wall, watching him as she crosses her arms over her chest.
"Anyone see grounders?" Bellamy asks the two boys he kept in the room.
"Uh-uh." Conner answers.
Bellamy nods slightly. "Well, in that case..." Bellamy holds up his gun but was stopped as Finn steps in the way as Beth moved forward.
"Hey, what the hell is wrong with you?" Finn asks Bellamy.
Bellamy rolls his eyes. "We were clear about what would happen if he came back." Beth sighs. She didn't really care for the Murphy boy or trust him, but that doesn't mean murder.
Finn shakes his head. "No. If he was with the grounders, then he knows thing's that could help us."
"Finn's right. As far as right now, he's the only intel we have on the grounders." Beth says to Bellamy, not mentioning Lincoln as she hasn't seen him since the meeting the other day.
Bellamy scoffs at her. "Your little boyfriend can't?" He asks. Beth glares at him. "And him, help us?" Bellamy asks, gesturing to Murphy, "We hanged him. We banished him, and now we're gonna kill him." He continues, speaking and pissing Beth off.
"He doesn't deserve to die." She says as Clarke now gets in the way of the gun. "Get the hell out of my way." He says to Finn and Clarke. Finn doesn't move.
"Finn is right." Clarke says.
"Like hell, he is." Bellamy says, looking at the blonde, his face going softer for a moment. "Clarke, think of Charlotte."
"I am thinking of her, but what happened to Charlotte was as much our fault as it was him." Clarke says to Bellamy before kneeling down to check on Murphy. "He's not lying." She spoke, grabbing his hand lightly. "His fingernails were torn off. They tortured him." Clarke says, showing the group his hand. Beth frowns, thinking about what he went through.
Finn looks over at Bellamy as Beth spoke up. "You and the grounders should compare notes." She says to him, anger in her voice. She was still pissed about him hurting Lincoln as there was no reason to.
"The grounder's know we're at war." Bellamy says to the group. "What all did you tell them about us?"
Murphy looks over at him. "Everything." Finn and Beth share a worried look.
"Once he's better, we find out what he knows, and then he's out of here." Clarke spoke, mostly to Bellamy. "Okay?"
"And what if he doesn't leave?" Beth asks the girl.
Clarke looks over at the Kane girl. "Then we kill him." Beth nods at her, and then Clarke leaves.
---
Beth sat in her tent she shared with Octavia. She was currently showing Octavia Lincoln's journal with his permission, of course.
"Can you teach me some of the language he is teaching you?" Octavia asks as she and Beth lay on their stomach's looking through the book.
"Sure!" Beth says before turning a few pages and landing on a page with some english written down on one side and some Tridgeslang, the grounders language, on the other side.
"So, um, sister is just sis. Please, is Beja, which also used to be a city or district hundreds of years ago, I think in what used to be called Portugal." Octavia looks at the girl, shocked she knew that. "My mother loved the old world history." Octavia nods, understanding. "I love you is ai hod yu in." Beth sighs, trying to think of more phrases as the tent is suddenly opened, causing Beth to hide the book quickly. Bellamy walks into the tent, looking at the girls. "Knock first?" Beth asks, giving him a dirty look to which he ignored.
"Jeez, you scared us." Octavia says to her older brother.
He sighs. "How are you feeling? Both of you?" He asks the two girls, causing them to share a confused look.
"We're fine." Beth says. "Get out."
"Have either of you touched Murphy?" He asks the two. Beth shakes her head no as Octaiva sighs.
"I don't know. I guess so. Why?" Octavia says, remembering bringing him into camp.
Bellamy sighs. "The grounders sent him here with a virus to infect us." He says before looking at the spot where Beth hid the book. "Derek just died from it." He says, looking at Beth. "Another mark for your boyfriends book." Beth looks at him wide-eyed.
"Come on. Clarke needs to examine you both." He says to the two before leaving.
---
The three were now in the dropship along with Clarke, who was currently examining Beth, having done Octavia already. "Okay, we're done." Clarke says to the three, and Beth nods. "No visible signs of swelling or bleeding, on either of you."
"So you're saying they don't have it?" Bellamy asks the blonde Ark princess. Clarke nods back at him.
"I'm saying they don't have symptoms, but that can change." She says to him. Beth looks around at the grup of sick delinquents in the corner. She frowns to herself, hoping there's a way Clarke can help them. "We need to keep them here, just in case." Clarke says about the girls to Bellamy.
"No way, look at this place. They'll get sick by just being here." Bellamy says to her.
Clarke sighs at him. "Look, I'll keep them on the third level with the others who haven't started showing symptoms yet." Clarke tells him before looking over at Beth. "Think of it as a way to keep Beth from sneaking out again." Clarke says to the Blake boy, causing Beth to glare at her and roll her eyes.
"Screw you, Clarke." Beth says to her, causing the blonde to roll her eyes back.
"I'll let you know if either of their conditions change." Clarke tells Bellamy, who nods, then leaves the dropship. Octavia starts climbing the ladder as Clarke stops Beth from following, grabbing her arm, causing the redhead to look at the blonde. "Beth, I need you to sneak out again."
---
"Lincoln!" Beth called out as she entered the cave. The man was standing there at his table. Beth sighs in relief when she sees him. He turns and rushes to her as he hears his name. He grabs her face in his hands, looking around at her face, checking for signs of the virus. She looks at him shocked. "You knew about the virus?" She asks him.
"I tried to get you out of there." He says to her but only gets a confused look in return. "Did you not see the flower?"
Beth sighs, remembering she was at the crash site earlier that morning. "I was at the crash cite. I didn't see it. I had to go see if I could find my dad." She says to him, and his face softens. Beth shakes her head at him, sadly. Lincoln pulls her into a hug as she lays her head on his shoulder. After a moment, Beth pulls out of the hug, looking at him. "People are dying. Clarke sent Octavia and I here for a cure, Octavia's keeping watch above."
Lincoln sighs at her words. "There is no cure." Her face drops at his words.
"So my people are gonna die? I could have died." She says to him.
"The sickness passes quickly. Few are immune." He tells her. "We use it to soften the battlefield." He explains. "I'm not surprised that you are one of the strong ones." Beth gives him a small smile, but it fades as she realizes his words.
"A battlefield?" She asks him.
Lincoln sighs at her question. "They attack at first light." Beth's eyes widen at the news.
"Oh my God." She mutters. "I need to save them. You have to help me." She says to him.
Lincoln shakes his head, having already tried. "I can't, I tried." He tells her. "My people now think I'm a traitor." She frowns at his words. She was in disbelief that his people would do that to him.
"Because of what happened at the bridge?" She asks him. "You were just trying to make peace."
Lincoln shakes his head again. "It's not because of the bridge." He says, looking at her.
Beth sighs as she realizes. "It's because of me." She says, looking down at her feet, guilt rising in her as she realizes she is the reason Lincoln's own people think he's a traitor.
"That doesn't matter now." He tells her, grabbing her face gently and making her look at him. "I'm leaving, Beth, right now. I want you to come with me." Her eyes widen at his request.
"And got to where?" She assks him, confused.
He smiles softly at her. "East to the sea, then across it. There's a clan, allies to the woods." He says to her. "They'll take us." He promises.
Beth sighs, wanting nothing more than to just go with him. And live a happy life. One by the sea. But she couldn't just leave everything behind, not when a war was about to start. "I can't just leave Finn, Raven, and O to die."
"There's nothing you can do to stop that now." He tells her.
She sighs. "I can go and warn them."
"They'll kill you, Beth." He says to her.
Beth shakes her head. "No, they won't." She tells him, getting a confused look in return. "They won't kill me because I'll kill them first. You've been training me, teaching me how to fight. My dad did, too, on the Ark. I know what I'm doing." She says to him. He sighs at her, but before he can say anything, she continues. "I'm going to protect my people, I need to. But you're part of that, so when this war is over. I want us to go to the sea." He gives her a confused look. "Once this war is over, they'll be okay, and then we can go. But only then." She explains to him.
He leans down and kisses her, not saying anything. She smiles into the kiss, kissing him back for a moment before pulling away. "After the war, we'll go." He mutters to her. She smiles and nods at him, her forhead resting against his.
"After the war, we'll go." She says back to him, promising him. She gives him one last kiss before leaving the cave.
Octavia stood there, leaning against a tree, just waiting for the girl. "Did you get it?" Octavia asks, walking to the strawberry blonde as she notices her leave the cave.
"We need to go, now." Beth says to her.
"Do you have a cure?" Octavia asks as the redhead starts speedwalking back to camp.
"No." Beth answers. "But they're attacking at first light. We need to warn them." Beth says to her, causing the younger girl to look at her scared and worried. "You'll be fine." Beth promises her. "Let's go." She says before she takes off running, Octavia right on her heels.
---
Beth and Octavia approach camp walking, having stopped running once they saw it up ahead. "Beth will come back with a cure." The two hear Clarke exclaim as they walk in the backside of camp.
Beth sighs before calling out. "There's no cure!" She exclaims, causing everyone to look at her. "But the grounders don't use the sickness to kill." She says to them.
"I warned you about going to see that grounder again." Bellamy says to her, then looks over at his sister. "And you, I told you to stop following her around. She's gonna get you killed."
"Yeah. Well, Bellamy, I have a warning for you." Beth says back to him. "They attack at first light!" Beth exclaims, making sure everyone could hear her. Bellamy looks at the redhead, eyes widened.
"C'mon, I'll help you get Clarke to the dropship." Octavia says to Finn, who was now holding an unconscious Clarke.
Bellamy sighs, running a hand through his hair, looking over at Raven. "How many bullets can you make by first light?" He asks her. Beth doesn't stick around waiting for the answer, going to her tent.
She begins to pack her bookbag that her father had given her. She was gonna drop it off at Lincoln's cave before the morning so that it was safe for after the battle, for when they go to the sea.
Beth finishes up packing her bag before heading out of the camp. War drums played in her ears as she she was walking back towards the cave. Suddenly, there was an explosion coming from where the bridge had been. Beth sighs, knowing it was Bellamy and Raven who were blowing up the bridge in hopes of it buying them all some more time. Beth would have gone with them to help, but she needed to get her stuff to Lincoln's cave, and she didn't really want to spend time with Bellamy right now.
She reaches the cave, going inside, and seeing Lincoln sitting there by his small fire.
"I heard the war drums right before the explosion." She says to him, letting him know she was now there. He jumps slightly but doesn't say anything yet. "We had to try and stop the attack."
Lincoln sighed, looking over at her as she sat down near him. "Look, there is so much you don't understand." He tells her. "The mountain men, they'll come and kill us all." He says to her, earning him a confused look.
"The moutain men? From mount weather? That's what you meant when you said they're not who we think they are." Beth says to him, and he nods at her. "There's other people here, besides grounders? The ones with the masks in your drawings?" She asks him, and he nods to her.
"We have to get out of here while we still have the chance to." He says to her, causing her to frown. "We need to leave now it may be the only chance we get." He says. "We have a lot of ground to cover before dark." He says to her, grabbing her bag and putting it on his back along with his own.
Beth sighs, grabbing his hand to stop him from moving around more. The two were now standing as Beth shook her head at him. "I can't go."
"You'll die here." He tells her.
Beth sighs and then shrugs. "Maybe I will."
"Why?" He asks her.
Beth looks at him sadly. "You said it before. They're my people." She says to him. "I need to do whatever I can to protect them." She says to him as tears well in her eyes. "I'm sorry, but I have too." He barely nods back at her, heartbroken by her choice to stay here, but he understood she wanted and needed to help her people.
"I'll leave you a map." He says to her.
She smiles at him and nods back. "Good. Cause I'll be there."
He smiles at her, kissing her forehead one last time before she leaves.
---
Beth sighs once she's back in her tent. Her emotions awry as she sinks down onto the floor of her tent, tears falling down her face. She wanted nothing more than to just run away from all of this chaos. Go and be with Lincoln and not have to worry about a war. But she couldn't. She can't abandon her people, not when they need her the most right now.
Octavia walks into the text, seeing Beth breaking down on her side, Lincoln's journal next to her. Octavia rushes over to her, heart broken by the sight of the older girl crying. "Beth, what happened?"
Beth sighs, wiping away some of her tears as the Blake girl holds her shoulder. "I told Lincoln I wasn't going with him."
Octavia looks at her confused. "Where to?" She asks.
Beth looks over at her. "He wants to leave before the war, to some place by the sea, or in it. I don't know. But I do know that I couldn't do that. I can't leave you and Finn, and Raven. You guys are my family, and I can't leave you right now." Beth explains to her. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier."
Octavia shakes her head. "It's okay, don't even worry about that."
"I just need to have hope that he's gonna be okay where-ever he's going." She says to Octavia before looking down at Lincoln's journal, seeing the drawing he did of her. She sighs, closing the book and putting it under her pillow. The Kane girl lays down. "I'm gonna get some sleep. Who knows when we'll get the chance to again." Beth says to her, and Octavia nods, agreeing.
"Okay, sleep well, B." Octavia says to her.
"You too, O." Beth says before trying to fall asleep, trying to keep the thoughts of Lincoln and the impending war that was approaching, out of her head.
