Returning Home

A great pain could be felt in my head and my throat burned with a great intensity. I already felt awful and I hadn't even fully awoken yet.

The warm air still circulated throughout the inside of Bee's cabin. I shifted a little in my sleep and noticed that I was now completely dry as well as the seat below me so that was something to be happy about.

Slowly, I opened up my eyes, the light from the dashboard nearly blinding me. It was still dark outside as I had expected it to be. I looked at the clock on the dashboard to see that it was only 12:17. We were nearly five hours away from Chicago. We had only been driving for about four hours and I was asleep for the majority of the journey.

I sat up, pieces of dried mud falling into my pants. My clothes and shoes were absolutely wrecked. My shirt was stained with the dark brown color from the mud and my pants had actually expanded so right now they were only slightly too big for me. My once white shoes were almost unrecognizable. They were tarnished with the dried mud and several pieces of green grass. I could also feel the dried mud cracking on my face, not to mention my hair was matted together with the dirt.

I only sighed. I'd take a shower when I returned home.

"Good morning, sleeping beauty," Bee greeted me.

I smiled.

"Hi," I tried to say but the only thing that came out was air.

I clutched my throat with the both of my hands, hoping it would somehow make the burning go away.

It had been years since I've had to deal with the pain of laryngitis. I was so relieved when it was over, secretly telling myself that I would never have to deal with it again; turns out I was wrong.

I whimpered ever so slightly.

"What's wrong, Rose?" Bee asked me.

I sighed, trying to think of a way that I could communicate with Bumblebee. You never really realized how much you needed something until it was rendered useless.

I placed my head on the back of the driver's seat and tapped it with my fingers. I had forgotten how much I hated being in this mute situation. Beneath me I felt the car slightly shudder, indicating to me that Bee was laughing. I rolled my eyes.

"Lose your voice?" he asked.

I nodded against the seat.

"Haven't you been warned about sleeping outside on the ground at night? I'm sure the same thing applies to rolling on the ground at night during a thunderstorm," Bumblebee teased.

I lightly punched the seat as if telling him to shut up. He only laughed again. my head was beginning to throb and I was in desperate need of something to drink.

"Water," I croaked out as best as I could, ignoring the burning pains in my throat.

The sound was almost inaudible. I was sure that a human wouldn't have been able to hear me but since Bumblebee was an advanced alien robot, I knew that he had heard me perfectly fine.

"Glove compartment," he answered me.

"Thank you," I croaked out again.

He whirred.

"Please don't talk. I don't want you to make it worse for yourself," he told me.

I sighed but did not respond. Doing the best I could do so not to worsen my headache, I climbed slowly to the front seat and opened up the glove compartment. Inside there were about seven bottles of water, something to which I scrunched my eyebrows at. Instead of further worrying about why Bumblebee was hoarding bottles of water, I grabbed one of the bottles and opened it up. I gulped the liquid down, my throat burning every time I swallowed. I finished the bottle in under thirty seconds and placed the cap back on the bottle before tossing it back into the glove compartment and shutting it.

"Everyone's worried about you, you know?" he stated.

I scrunched my eyebrows and made a noise as if asking him why.

"You hadn't answered your phone for anyone. Most everyone thought that something bad had happened to you. Also the fact the no one knew exactly where you were going kind of freaked everyone out," he explained to me.

I sighed and leaned my aching head against the seat.

"Be lucky you have me."

I rolled my eyes.

"For now," I croaked out.

He whirred.

"No. I'm not going to leave you again," he assured me.

I frowned.

"Are you sure?"

The words barely came out of my mouth but Bumblebee still managed to make them out.

"Yes, Rosalie."

I sighed in relief. I really didn't know what I would've done if he were to just leave me again.

"Please don't leave me again."

"I'm not going to, little lady."

I smiled and looked out at the road in front of us. There was suprisingly a lot of people on the freeway considering the time of night.

"Only about two hours to go," I heard Bee say.

I shot a look towards the dashboard. Chicago was nine hours away from Virginia and we had only been driving for four. How on earth had we only two hours left?

"You seem to forget that I'm an Autobot," Bee said, indirectly answering my question.

I rolled my eyes and smiled. That explained a lot though.

I was beginning to feel tired again. Crying always did a number on me and the fact that I was now sick made it even worse. I yawned and leaned my head back against the seat.

"Are you still tired?" Bee asked me.

I nodded and the seat reclined in the slightest. I smiled in content and hugged the seat. It had been a while since I had spent the night with Bee and I had forgotten how much I truly missed him.

"Thank you," I barely whispered.

"Anything for you. But what did I tell you, little lady?" he scolded.

I snickered, my throat burning when I did.

"Go back to sleep, Rosalie. I'll wake you when we get home," he informed me.

The soft sound of a song by Imagine Dragons echoed throughout the car. I settled back on the seat and closed my eyes.

"Rosalie," I heard someone say.

I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. I was still in the front seat of Bee's cabin and we were no longer moving. Looking out of the windshield, I noticed lights emitting from a structure. I was finally home.

"You're home now," Bee said.

I smiled and opened the passenger's side door. The air outside was quite brisk though I didn't mind it much. In front of me was the Range Rover that I had used to take the trip and I squinted my eyebrows at it, wondering how it got here. I let out a dry cough and whimpered before continuing on to the house.

I opened the door to the house, the warm air surrounding me. After silently closing it, I made my way into the family room where several people were gathered. Gracie, Lynleigh, Jason, my dad, Joshua, Carly and even Sam were all together, talking amongst themselves. I took another step and leaned against the family room doorway. The chatter ceased and almost all at once everyone's eyes were on me. My dad got up from his seat and literally ran over to me, crushing me in a hug. He released me after a few moments and gave me a very stern look.

"I know that you're twenty two years old, but it wouldn't hurt to call or even answer. You're still my daughter you know?" he chided.

I smiled and nodded.

"Why are you so filthy?" Gracie inquired.

I pursed my lips. I hated not being able to talk.

"Are you going to answer or not? We don't have all night," Lynleigh baited.

I rolled my eyes at her and pointed to my throat. My dad laughed.

"Aw, she's sick again. Were you sleeping on the ground?" he asked.

I moved my hand in a notion that said 'Kind of, but not really'. He just laughed and nodded. I looked behind my dad and over at my uncle Joshua who stood beside Sam. I had not seen him in over a month because of his business trip to China. Quickly, I walked over and hugged him. He hugged me back tightly and I smiled up at him.

"I've missed you, little girl. Next time you better answer that phone. And thank me. I wouldn't drive nine hours just for anyone," he stated.

My eyes widened and I pointed at him.

"Yes it was me. Your stuff is up in your room by the way," he informed me.

I smiled at him and opened my mouth to say thank you, but he quickly covered it with his hand.

"No talking. Boss' orders," he huffed.

I rolled my eyes. Bumblebee. . .

I then moved onto Carly and Sam. My attention was mostly averted towards Carly, but I didn't want to be rude to Sam. He was still my friend after all. Carly smiled at me before hugging me. I released her.

"You're never going on a stress-induced road trip again without someone going with you, okay? We were all so worried about you. And you didn't even say goodbye," she exclaimed.

I nodded and mouthed an 'I'm sorry'. It didn't take me long to notice the absence of two small people: Delaney and Avery. They were probably asleep considering it was almost three in the morning. I was beginning to feel dirtier than I was so I stepped out of the room.

"Where are you going, Rosalie?" I heard Jason ask.

I turned to face him and gestured to my disheveled appearance. He laughed and motioned me on. It felt so good to finally be back home.
