17; A Credible Threat
"While tonight's game is a charity event, we hear Devenford Prep and Beacon Hills have a long-standing rivalry," the female interviewer said, holding the microphone out to Brett, who was smirking.
"Devenford always plays to win, but especially when it's for charity."
"And especially when 100% of the proceeds go to the winning team, isn't that right?" She asked.
"Which is why we'll be 100% kicking Beacon Hills ass," Brett replied, grinning smugly at the camera. I scoffed, causing him to look over and shoot me a teasing smile. I flipped him off.
"Tickets still available for purchase. This is Kathleen Cassidy for KQNB."
"The local news always covers the game," I heard Mason say from behind me. I stopped looking at Brett and turned around to see Mason and Corey stood together. "There could be two, maybe three vans. All of them transmitting."
"What's going on?" I asked, stepping over to the two of them.
"Are you saying that thing's going to be out there tonight?" Corey asked, ignoring my question.
"I'm saying people are going to die," Mason met my eyes. "A lot of people," he glanced up at the frequency tower, his eyes full of worry.
"The beast," I said with a frown, trying to understand what they had been talking about. "It comes out at high frequencies?" Mason nodded and I swallowed thickly. "The game," I blurted. "There's going to be so much news coverage-" I instinctively started grabbing my phone, ready to text my brother.
"We know," Mason said, shaking his head. Both him and Corey were eyeing the news crew with fearful eyes.
"I'm gonna text Scott."
~
"I'm not playing that game," I said firmly, causing Stiles to sigh. "There's no way in hell."
"You know, you're almost as stubborn as coach," he said with a glare, causing me to roll my eyes.
"You know, you're really getting on my nerves."
"Rebecca Louise McCall. I am begging you, just this one time, please," Scott pleaded.
"Oh god you said my full name. You really need me to do this?" I asked, looking between the two of them.
"I'll buy you pizza," Stiles promised, causing me to smile.
"Done deal, Stilinski. I'll go get changed," I headed to the door but paused, turning back to face them. "By the way, I was going to play anyway,"
"What?" I heard Stiles say at the same time as my brother rolled his eyes and said, in an exasperated tone, "I know."
The two of them turned to each other and Stiles' jaw dropped open. "Now I have to buy her pizza."
I chuckled and left, heading into the girls locker rooms. After I had changed into my lacrosse uniform, which brought back way too much nostalgia for my liking, I met the others in a classroom. I sat down on the bench next to Stiles, who glared at me, whilst Scott stood up and went through the plan. "Mason, you know your part?"
"Corey and I break into the Devenford bus and search their shoes," Mason replied.
Malia stepped forwards. "I take out the TV vans."
"Right before the whistle, Coach forfeits the game," Stiles continued.
"The rest of us are looking for a size 10 with a bloody sole," Liam finished.
"Just out of curiosity," Malia spoke up. "What if it doesn't work? What if we have to go up against this thing? I mean, I hate to bring up bad memories but Scott's still healing from what Theo did to him."
Kira looked up. "No, he's not."
"She's right," Scott said, lifting up his lacrosse jersey to show his skin fully healed. There was no hint of a wound even being there. "It happened the night we got Lydia out of Eichen House," he smiled. "I healed. When were all together again, when we were a pack."
"The Beast doesn't have a pack," I stated.
Scott smiled at me. "Not like us. We can do this guys. No one dies tonight."
~
I glanced at Scott and Stiles, nodding at one of them to go over to coach. The game needed to be forfeited some time soon. Stiles nodded, taking off his gloves and running over, whilst Scott and I listened.
"Hey, Coach, now is uh, time to forfeit the game," Stiles said awkwardly. "Now's the perfect time to forfeit the game. You gotta-"
"Stilinski, I've never forfeited a game and I never will," Coach chuckled. "Get on the field."
He blew the whistle, before Stiles could protest, and the crowd immediately started cheering. I glanced at Scott, cursing under my breath. This wasn't the plan. This wasn't supposed to happen. "Okay, it's fine. Malia's still going to take out the wiring on the TV vans," Scott assured me as Liam joined us in heading to the field.
"And we have an hour and a half to try to find someone with blood on their shoes," Liam reminded.
"One person out of 400," Scott said curtly before heading into position. I groaned, watching as he bent down by the ball with Brett.
"My sister's got the bleachers covered." The referee blew the whistle and Scott stumbled, Brett taking the ball and running with it. But it wasn't long before Kira had pretty much knocked down every Devenford player to the ground before scoring a goal.
"You think Kira's playing tad aggressive?" Stiles asked as Scott and I glanced at all the groaning guys on the ground. I looked over at my friend, noticing her eyes glowing orange.
Scott exhaled. "We might have a problem."
I scoffed. "Might?"
Once she had successfully knocked down every single Devenford player, the whistle blew and Scott ran over to her. "Kira, maybe you should ease up on the other players."
"I'm trying to win."
"But you didn't even have the ball."
"Stay out of my way."
Kira stalked off and I ran over to my brother, at the same time as Liam. "Go with the back-up plan?" I asked, watching my friend with uncertainty. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. She- or the fox possessing her- could end up really hurting someone, or herself.
Scott nodded. "Go with the back-up plan."
The whistle blew again and Liam headed into the middle with Brett, who took off running towards Kira, sending her flying to the ground. "Not so tough now, are you?" He taunted.
Kira stood up again, harshly smacking her lacrosse stick across Brett's face and sending his helmet flying half way across the field. I gasped, my eyes widening.
"You!" The referee called out, pointing at her. "You're done. Get off the field!"
Kira stormed off and I ran over to Brett. Liam stood over him too, grinning. "That was perfect. Thanks dude."
Brett raised his eyebrows, totally disoriented. His head fell back against the grass and I chuckled, sitting down beside him. "You've kinda deserved that for a long time, not gonna lie." He groaned and I bit back another laugh, waving the referee over to help him out.
After that, Devenford started playing rough. Liam was really harshly knocked down by a player, causing the whole crowd to gasp. I started to run forwards but stopped myself, letting Scott go ahead.
"We're getting crushed."
"It's okay. All we need to do is give the others enough time. Like I said. No one's getting hurt," I heard Scott sigh. "Except for us." I watched my brother look into the distance, his heart rate increasing, seemingly with worry. "Kira."
~
The referee blew the whistle loudly, making me wince. "Time out!"
I pulled my helmet off, heading over to Brett, who was walking with Liam. "We need more time," Liam hissed. "You gotta stop scoring."
"You don't think I've been trying?" He retorted back. "You guys suck. You suck so bad, it's impossible to lose against you."
"Hey, we don't suck that bad," I defended.
"What are we supposed to do?" Liam asked, and I wasn't sure if he was addressing me or Brett.
"Try not sucking," Brett said, causing Liam to huff and head back to the bench.
I turned to Brett, letting out a tired sigh. "Thanks for helping out tonight."
"Anything for you," he grinned, causing me to raise my eyebrows.
"Don't push it." Brett started to chuckle and I shook my head, not even bothering to hide my laugh. I couldn't help but feel happier in his company. Coming from someone who'd previously threatened to rip Brett's throat out, multiple times, we had really started to get along since then. His eyes left mine and wandered behind me, making me frown. I turned around, noticing Liam and Hayden caught up in a kiss. My heart completely shattered right there. All the hidden hope I had for me and Liam completely slipped through my fingers. The pain I felt was heartbreaking. It hurt so much, watching them together. Even my throat felt tight, causing my eyes to start to sting. I didn't want to feel like this. I hated feeling like this. I hated them for doing this to me.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, making me jump slightly. I let out a long breath, keeping my head up strongly as I faced Brett again. "Bec, your eyes are glowing."
"Shit," I closed my eyes, hoping they would just miraculously stop glowing after that. When I opened them again, Brett was shaking his head. "I can't-" I started, before a screeching sound cut me off, making me wince. "Gah," I placed a hand on my head, begging for the sound to go away.
"Becca?"
"You don't hear that?!"
"Hear what?" Another wave of the sound hit me and my knees buckled slightly. Brett reached out, grabbing me before I could fall. "Becca, you need to control this." I let out a strangled gasp of pain, squeezing my eyes closed. And then suddenly the visions overtook; a large monster with black fur, Liam, Brett, really deep wounds. I was feeling the pain, their pain. "Becca!" My eyes burst open again and I sucked in a deep breath. Brett eyed me with concern and I suddenly became aware that he was squeezing one of my hands. "Hey, you alright?"
I nodded slowly, trying to clear my head. "I had another one," I swallowed the lump in my throat. I had to warn Brett. I had to warn all of them. "Another vision."
"What happened?"
"The beast," I breathed out, just as the whistle blew again.
"What?" I heard Liam ask from behind me, causing Brett to roll his eyes.
Blanking Liam, I looked around the crowd of people. "Where's Stiles?" I asked. "We need to tell-"
"I'll find Stiles," Liam said, harshly staring at Brett for a while longer before going off to find Stiles.
Brett's gaze lingered on Liam for a moment until he turned back to me, concern written over his face. "You should sit out."
I shook my head. "No way, we'll lose so bad without me," I forced an overconfident grin onto my face but inside I felt absolutely sick. Just because I had a glimpse of what was going to happen, it didn't mean we couldn't change it. All of my faith was now put into Malia being able to take out the TV vans. If we could do that, we could save everyone. Yet, there was still a chance that we couldn't. But I didn't know what else we could do to stop it.
"Becca-" he started.
"I'll be fine," I assured, although I wasn't so sure. "Look, we need to give Malia more time so we can prevent the beast getting here, okay?"
"Alright," he bit his lip, his eyes becoming teasing again. "But don't get too cocky out there, princess."
"I'll try my best, wolf boy," I winked before jogging over to my place on the field.
"You done flirting?" I heard Liam ask. "Because maybe you should save it for later, you know. Considering there's more important things going on."
I shook my head, staring at Liam in disbelief. "After what you did, you honestly think you have the right to tell me who I can and can't flirt with?" I scoffed. "Get a life, Liam."
I shoved past him and headed to my place, watching as he moved to the centre. The referee blew the whistle and Liam was already off, scoring a shot. Again and again, he scored, causing cheers to erupt in the stands. Until finally, I got the ball. I'd just scored a goal when the ear-piercing screeching sound, that I'd heard when I got my vision, rang out. I placed my hands over my ears, dropping to my knees on the ground. Small explosions of the TV equipment sounded and I immediately felt the sick feeling building up in the pit of my stomach again. It was happening. We couldn't prevent it. The beast was here. I should have done something to stop it.
"Should have stayed in rehab," I heard coach mutter from the sidelines.
I forced myself up off the ground, throwing my helmet to the side. Brett was watching me and I shook my head. My eyes then met Liam's, just as a growl rang out near the buses. I watched in horror as his eyes glowed and he started running towards it. "Shit, Liam no!" I called out after him, ready to follow until someone pulled me back by my waist.
"Don't. You won't be able to take it on!" Brett was yelling, but it was all a blur. Liam wouldn't be able to take it on alone either.
I pulled out of Brett's grip, spinning around to yell at him so quickly that I made myself dizzy. I poked him in the chest. "Don't tell me what I can and can't do!"
Brett placed his hands firmly on my shoulders, keeping me where I was. I turned my head back around, following the direction he was looking in, watching as Liam continued to head towards the beast. "Liam!" I heard Stiles shout. "Liam, wait!" My eyes widened in horror as he jumped, meeting the beast mid air. Brett let out a groan and let go of my shoulders.
"Stay here," he ordered.
"No, no, no. Don't. You're gonna get hurt! Brett-" I grabbed his arm but he pulled out of my grip, glancing at me for a moment and hesitating. After a shake of his head, he sprinted towards Liam and the beast. "Brett!"
The vision had come true.
