05; A Novel Approach
I heard a loud knock at the door, which was soon drowned out by the sound of the printer whirring.
I groaned and sat up, pulling off a sheet of paper that was stuck to my face.
Liam and I had been up all night researching mythical creatures, printing out information from every single website we could find.
I rolled over and looked at the clock, which showed that we were late for school.
My bedroom door started to open and I immediately sat up, shaking Liam awake.
He let out a tired moan and rolled over.
"Liam!" I hissed as my mother stepped inside.
She frowned, looking around the room.
There were sheets littered everywhere; on the floor, on the sides, on the bed.
Then she glanced over at Liam, who was just managing to sit up, before her eyes rested on me.
"I don't even want to know"
~
"The Dread Doctors?" Liam questioned as we headed into the library.
"Yeah. Malia has some kind of book on them" I shrugged, setting my bag down on the table.
"So they're supposed to be the ones that have been digging holes and burying people?"
"Apparently" I pulled the Bestiary book out and laid it on the table. "So I still can't find anything on my green eyes and I'm still looking for creatures that can, you know, see into the future. The only other thing I was thinking was that it's because of my heightened senses"
"What about the scream?"
"Yeah, didn't find anything on that either"
Liam sighed and pulled out the sheets of paper we'd printed and have been looking over for the past few days.
"Maybe I'm psychic" I joked.
"Lydia's the psychic not you"
"Lydia's a banshee" I pointed out.
"Same thing"
"Not exactly but nice try" I grinned. My smile cut short, however, when I caught a scent of something.
"What?" Liam frowned, obviously noticing the look on my face.
"I thought I smelt blood"
Liam stared at me for a moment before taking a deep breath in.
"Subtle" I commented. "But I don't know. Maybe not then" I shrugged.
When he exhaled, he shook his head. "I smell it too"
I stood up, following the smell until I found it at it's strongest.
I ran my hand along the metal bar and frowned.
My finger caught something sticky and I grimaced as I held it up.
"Um, that's disgusting" I said, trying to wipe it off my finger.
"Okay, what do we do? Do we tell Scott? Do we-"
I cut Liam off.
"I think this may be more in Stiles' league"
~
Liam got caught up at school so I was riding solo on this mission.
After receiving confirmation that Stiles wasn't at school, I headed over to his house instead
"Hey, you feeling better?" I asked as I stepped into his room.
"Yeah, I guess um-" his eyes briefly glanced over at something behind me and I turned around and stood up, heading over to the whiteboard where Stiles always writes theories and names of people he's suspicious of.
I recognised Theo's name on there.
And Donovan's.
"Donovan's dead? Since when?" I asked, reading what Stiles had written on the board.
"Um, last night. I think it happened last night" he said.
I could feel the anxiety radiating from him.
Something else too.
Guilt.
"Did it happen in the library by any chance?"
"I don't know. I only heard about it this morning"
His heartbeat started to rise.
"Stiles are you lying to me?"
It rose again. "No"
"Did something happen? You know you can tell me"
"Nothing happened"
"Stiles, I can smell the guilt"
He paused, running a shaking hand through his hair.
"You killed him?" I asked in disbelief.
"I-it was an accident. It was an accident, I promise. Oh god" he sat down on the bed, placing his head in his hands.
"It's okay" I sat down next him and put my arm around his shoulder. "It's okay"
"You can't- you can't tell anyone"
"I won't. I won't tell anybody" I promised.
"Not even Scott" he said.
"Not even Scott" I repeated. "Stiles, I know you feel guilty but if it was an accident like you said it was, then you don't need to worry. Okay, I mean I've mortally wounded a few people with a bow and arrow and I've had to live with that. I know it's not anything like death but it's still difficult to grasp. You just can't let the guilt consume you"
"How am I supposed to get over the fact that I killed someone?"
"Sometimes our actions are justifiable"
"I didn't do it on purpose"
"I know, I know. But after everything we've been through, it doesn't seem like such a bad thing"
"It shouldn't be like that though. You're so young Becca, you shouldn't think like that"
"And I would give anything not to think like that. But do you remember the night we were in the school. Scott was in the vault and me and my dad came to find him. There was an assassin about to kill you-"
"And then your dad killed him, yeah I remember that. Vaguely"
"His actions were justifiable. I don't know what happened between you and Donovan but he must have done something to put you in danger because I know you're not a bad person. But like dad told me, you need to look at it logically. Compartmentalise. I know you can get through it and I promise you I'll be there to help you"
Stiles looked up at me and smiled for the first time in what felt like forever.
"Sometimes, just sometimes, you're my favourite McCall"
~
"I have an idea" Liam said.
"Right?" I frowned.
"Maybe to figure out what happened the other night we need to recreate it"
"So we need to go back to sinema?" I asked.
"Actually I was thinking that we focus on your emotions, how you were feeling when it happened. We recreate those" Liam explained.
"And how do we do that?"
"Well we're gonna need some help, obviously"
I narrowed my eyes at my boyfriend. "From who?"
~
"Oh god not you" I groaned.
"If it isn't my favourite McCall" Brett grinned at me.
"Funny, you're not the first person to say that to me today"
"So I hear we're working with emotions" he said. "Tell you what I feel? Anxiety"
"Hmm. Yeah I'd say that's about right. Picking up any annoyance too?"
"Bex" Liam cautioned. "Give him a chance"
I huffed. "Okay, whatever"
Brett reached into his bag and pulled out a stuffed bear.
My stuffed bear.
"Why have you got Mr Boo?" I sighed.
"Mr Boo?" Brett teased.
"Yes. Give him back" I said, attempting to grab the bear from his hands. He held his arm up high so I couldn't reach it.
"You're an ass"
"It's great to know how highly you think of me"
I scoffed.
"So to start off with, these snide comments you tend to give me kinda hurt my feelings. So I was wondering if I could get an apology?" He crossed his arms over his chest.
"Nope"
"I thought so. Let's try something else then"
"Let's not"
Brett ignored me. "Repeat after me. I Rebecca McCall"
I rolled my eyes. "I Rebecca McCall"
"Am incredibly sorry"
"Am incredibly sorry"
"For being a bitch to the amazing Brett Talbot"
"For not being a bitch to the dickhead Brett Talbutt"
Liam snorted but covered it up with a cough.
Brett glared at me. "Well just for that-" he ripped Mr Boo's ear off.
"You did not"
"Repeat after me. I Rebecca McCall am incredibly sorry for being a bitch to Brett Talbot"
I turned to Liam. "This is a waste of time"
I heard the sound of something being ripped again and looked back to find Mr Boo's other ear gone.
"You monster!"
He started to twist Mr Boo's head and I winced.
"Please stop taking this out on the bear"
Brett reached down into his bag and pulled out a load of pictures.
"Let's try something else"
The first picture he held up was a baby photo of me and Scott.
"Do I even want to know how you got that?"
"Are you gonna say it"
"Say what?"
"I Rebecca McCall am-"
"I don't see why I have to say that"
The picture was ripped in half. I stared at Brett in disgust.
"My mom is going to be so pissed"
He held up another picture.
This one was of me, Liam and Mason.
"So?" Brett cocked his head to the side.
"This is stupid"
Another ripped up photo fell to my feet.
Followed by another one of Stiles, Scott and I.
"Stop it"
Brett held up a picture of Allison, Lydia and I. It was the first selfie we took together and it had turned out pretty good. So good that we got it printed.
"Okay, look you've made your point. Just don't-"
I could hear the blood angrily pounding in my ears when Brett held up both sides of the picture in his hands.
"Oops"
"You-" I started to step forwards but he held up another photo.
This time it was just of me and Allison.
"Don't you dare!" I warned. "Don't you fucking dare!"
"I hope these aren't the only photographs you have of her"
"No!"
Tiny little shreds of the photo landed on the ground.
"Just stop it! I'll say it! I'll say the damn thing. Please" Angry tears brimmed in my eyes.
"Are you sure? Because I have loads more photos. Hey, look at this one-"
My most favourite photo of Allison, Scott and I was ripped to shreds and littered onto the ground before I could even move.
"That's it" I lunged forwards but Liam tugged me backwards. "Let go of me!"
"Oh I'm sorry princess, it seems I may have ripped up all your favourite photos of your dead friend. That's a shame"
I struggled against Liam's grip before turning around to face him.
"You" I growled. "All you've done is stand and watch him do this! You've watched him get rid of my only pictures of her! How could you? How could you!" I then turned to Brett. "Out of all the things you've done-"
"Is this the lowest? Did I finally sink to that level. All I had to do was mention the damn girl's name and you were ready to rip my throat out"
Liam's grip tightened on me again as I spewed out profanities. "I hope you die a horrible painful death!"
"Like Allison?"
And that was it, my blood was boiling and I was running towards him.
My scream of anger soon changed into a scream of pain as I dropped to my knees on the floor.
The word scream was being repeated over and over in my head.
Within a small matter of seconds I saw flashes of electricity but then everything went blurry. Just at that moment, I heard an ear splitting scream. A banshee scream.
The sound pierced through me.
"Agh!" I pressed my hands against my head, hoping it would stop the pain.
"Rebecca! Becca what's going on?" Liam was crouched beside me.
"Rebecca?" Brett asked.
"Can't you hear that!" I yelled over the noise of the scream that was still in my mind.
"Hear what?" Liam questioned. "Becca what can you hear!" He said frantically.
My name was being repeated over and over again but I was slipping out of consciousness.
Then the scream stopped.
The pain disappeared.
And everything went dark.
~
"You were unconscious" Liam pointed out.
"For like ten seconds. I'm fine" I argued.
"You saw something"
"I already told you. I didn't see anything"
"I thought we trusted each other?"
"I do trust you!"
"Just let me walk you up the damn stairs and into your room, okay"
"Fine"
Once I was safely in my bedroom, the two of us sat in silence.
"I'm sorry" he said.
"Whatever"
"It was a stupid idea"
"Yes it was"
"The photos were copied. The real ones are still in here"
My eyes widened in relief. "They're still here?"
Liam nodded.
I dived off the bed and filed through some of my storage boxes until I found the folder with all my most treasured photographs.
And sure enough they were all there.
I hugged the folder to my chest as a feeling of nostalgia overcame me.
"I'm sorry I can't say the same for your bear. I'll buy you a new one"
I laughed and turned to face my dorky boyfriend.
"Please don't cry"
I hadn't even realised.
Quickly, I wiped away the tears rolling down my cheeks.
"I promise you I'll save up all my money and buy you the best bear ever"
"I'm not crying over the bear" I giggled. "Although it did mean a lot to me. And I mean what kind of screwed up person would tear up a bear? That kid has problems I'm telling you"
"He's just a dick. I'm sorry I got him involved"
"It's okay. You meant well" Another tear slid down my face and I tried, and failed, to wipe it away before Liam noticed.
"Bec please, what's wrong?"
"I'm just overwhelmed"
Liam sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"I'm so sorry. I'll never do anything this stupid again"
"Honestly, Liam. It's okay. You were just trying to help"
"I'm sorry"
"Don't be"
"I can't believe I put you through that"
"Liam-"
"I totally understand if-"
"Oh my god shut up" I mumbled before pressing my lips to his. "Better?"
"Much"
Liam wrapped his arm around me and I leant my head on his shoulder.
"The vision wasn't really anything. It was blurry" I spoke up, after a few minutes of silence.
"So you did see something?" He turned his head to face me.
I nodded. "Mainly sparks. Electricity. Mostly, I heard voices. And right near the end I heard a banshee scream"
"Who else was there?"
"I didn't see anyone. I don't even know where it was"
"We should warn the others"
I shook my head. "What the hell do we say? 'Sorry guys just watch out where you go because Bex seems to be some kind of psychic that predicts the future and she had a vision - we don't know how accurate it is right now but just watch out anyway. Don't die'"
Liam gave me a look. "This is serious"
"Okay, just text Scott. Ask him where he is" I suggested.
So he did.
And we waited.
For a long time.
"He's probably with Kira" I shrugged, glancing down at my phone to see if Lydia had replied to my message.
Thankfully, I saw a notification on my message app and was relieved to see it was from Lyds saying she was with the others and they were all fine.
"They're okay" I confirmed.
Liam let out a sigh of relief.
"Okay, no more trying to get visions out of you. Maybe it's just a phase you're going through in your transformation"
I bit my lip. "I guess so. I mean have you noticed how it seems to be when I have strong emotions? It makes me wonder if it's something too do with my emotions being heightened as a werewolf. But then again, I don't know. It makes sense that it could also be connected to my eyes somehow. Like some other supernatural talent"
"We'll figure it out"
"Let's focus on the doctors first. They're more important"
~
