Two month had flown past. Two months since her husband had been deployed for six months. Two months and their hearts had begun to heal, slowly. He made it a habit to message her throughout the day despite the tight restrictions on data usage. He made sure to face time her whenever he could and slowly the broken chards reformed. She begun to smile again to the relief of her friends, her work taking a new angle; she had long given up on the position of senior surgeon and opted to take a different route with her career. She started up a programme on mainstream channels talking about medical knowledge and offering advice to all age groups, she interacted with patients outlining certain prognosis's and became known as Doctor Bae beauty much to the amusement of her and her friends, her face brightening every corner of the hospital as advertisement and the respect that staff and patients alike had for her was something that she never thought she would receive. And despite all of the new aspects in her life she never once faltered in her actual job, the same level of commitment and resilience shown through everything. But this side of her career she chose to keep away from Jackson opting that it would be the better option, she didn't want to burden him with her life and her situation again. And underneath that there was an underlying fear that it would result in something far more drastic. The trust did seem to be there through numerous amounts of conversation but that was all their relationship was. She was sure that he didn't feel anything. And if she knew the truth she would see how wrong she was , but her heart had been played and plagued far too many times; her hope of a reasonably stable future with Jackson had now diminished into nothing but a small fantasy that liked to haunt her at random times when they were talking. Her heart had seemed to delude itself that this was something more;potentially long lasting, to the point it would skip a beat whenever he messaged or called, that or it was the fact that she still had him saved as Captain hottie. She tried to change it, but couldn't. The ID always put a smile on her face, and she couldn't bring herself to change it, a reminder of the fact that they weren't always this broken.
She walked past the ambulances that were blaring blue lights, traumas being rushed in as Yeri smiled at her. Irene entered the emergency room her eyes smiling as others greeted her. She shed her coat and bag before walking out and starting her day. She hadn't even made it out of the doctors lounge and she was already rushing into a trauma, gunshot wound to the head. She felt herself relax. She was back. Irene Wang had rediscovered herself.
Two hours later and she had moved up to the OR, her hands working skilfully as she commanded the room in a peaceful and composed way, they had only just made a dent and looking at the clock she knew she was going to be here for at least another nine hours. But unlike the other days, as the hours ticked by, not once did she feel tired. Not once did she lose her mind and she knew that it was because she was happier. She was no longer held back by her own self. She wasn't plagued with worry regarding Jin, the weeks being peaceful at the hospital and she didn't allow herself to think about her husband more than necessary. She continued developing her relationship with his family, to the point that she felt as if she had always been there. She made sure to help her mother-in-law in the kitchen, talking with her as they cooked and tried out new recipes, she helped her father-in-law with army related drills and regulations, telling him about her adventures and listening keenly to his. She helped her brother-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law with the company, directly through her programme that helped with developments of healthy products and fundraising for the hospital working with them to exceed their reputation as Korea's best company. She actively took part in their fundraising events and led them beautifully when they faltered. She was officially Mrs Wang and they were proud to call her part of their family as much as she was. And of course she was always there for Amy. She knew that Jackson had a soft spot for her and she understood why. Irene helped her with homework, babysat Amy when her parents were needed else where and took her out. She stuck to Irene calling her second mum and always running into her aunts arms. And she loved it, her heart was being repaired. She never told him any of this. She didn't want to. She didn't want him to think that she was blurring the line that he had spoken about on their first day as husband and wife and so she kept everything to a limit. Even when he tried further she made sure to do her duty as a wife in accordance to her vows and left it at that. She looked up at the clock, five hours going by and no real success, the bullet far too embedded and every single movement seemed to cause the patient to crash. And as much as she didn't want to she had to call it. This patient was brain dead. Even if they could stabilise them, their quality of life would be non existent, they would be connected to machines for the remainder of their life. Irene sighed, moving away. She shed her mask and gown walking out to the family who were huddled in the corner, three children and a husband, she watched as one of the children caught sights of her the family rushing towards her. She led them into a private room. "I'm sorry." She began, "the way in which the bullet has hit means that every time we get near to it she crashes. We have removed what we could but it's not enough to stabilise her. And if we manage to stabilise her the chances of her waking Up is extremely low. She would have to be connected to machines for life." She paused letting them process it. "We have her connected at the moment but we think it's best that we let her go. We wanted you to have the chance to say goodbye." She whispered, her heart quenching at the child that broke down. Irene wrapped her arms around them in comforting manner, choosing not to speak but to offer them silent condolence. She led them to the room watching the father in front who broke down on his wife, the kids soon following as her and the nurse stood watching. This was part of the job Irene always hated. It pained her heart every time when she knew she couldn't do anything. She sighed her head turning to the side as she brushed away a tear, her sights resetting on the scene, her head bowed in respect. Her senior spoke to them as Irene silently prayed for the soul of this woman, the sound of the machine echoing as the compressed sobs broke free with the final beep. The small child who fisted the sheets turned running into Irene's embrace who caught her rubbing her back as she sobbed. Irene sat on the floor the child in her hands as the family mourned.
An hour later she had been sent back to the emergency room working back and forth with patients, working backwards and forwards as she looked at another trauma. Her shoulders slumped slightly, Wendy squeezing her shoulder. "I'll take this one. Take a break." Irene smiled at her. "Thanks wends." She said walking to the doctors lounge and collapsing on the couch, her heavy eye lids closing instantly. She managed half an hour of sleep before Joy walked in shaking her awake. "Hey I'm sorry for waking you. There's a patient who's insisting that he won't see anyone but you." The tiredness in her eyes faded instantly, her insides turning. It couldn't be. It couldn't be him. Jackson had said that Jin would be gone for six months and it had only been two, hers eyes flashed to joys confused at the small smirk she wore. "Wha-" she was cut off. "Hurry the fuck up Joohyun." She scolded. Irene's eyes narrowed punching Joy who winced "Ow that hurt..." "Good." She responded. "Hey what about your vow to do no harm." She called out whining and pouting. "That applies to everyone but you." Irene said laughing, she grabbed her stethoscope. "What room." "20." She nodded. Irene walked away her hand on the door, calming her breaths. She opened the door realising that joy hadn't given her a file. She walked in her eyes landing on the form clad in a black suit, shoulder blades broad under the blazer. She gulped. Her heart stopping as she closed the door, the form turning to her. Her eyes widening.
There in front of her was her husband. Jackson looked at her, noticing that the tired look that she carried in her eyes months ago was gone. His eyes widening at her bangs and longer hair. She looked beautiful. He watched her eyes blink in disbelief as her eyes trailed his form, his body seemingly more lean and well built. His hair a lighter shade then she remembered. His hand shoved into his pocket the other wearing the ring that she had put on him three months ago at his side. She felt her eyes blur for a second. She ran up to him, jumping into his arms holding him close. He stumbled back into the cabinet his arms instantly wrapping around her, his features displaying a smile. "Hey." He whispered huskily as she tightened her grip on him. His scent, the scent she had missed smelling in their house hitting her nostrils as she leaned back slightly. "Your back." She said. "Yeah for a few weeks. Jin moved again and so we are collecting some things and then heading to the new site." She nodded, creating a bit more a distance. "Are you okay? Are you injured or anything?" She looked him over checking as he chucked. "Irene...Irene...woah woah woah chill. I'm fine." She looked up into his eyes searching, before nodding. She turned to move away, his arms suddenly wrapping around her pulling her back to him. "I missed you." He said watching as she huffed. "Okay." She responded. She laughed at his expression. "That's when you say I missed you too husband." "But I didn't." "Oh really missy." He asked back as she laughed. She watched him pout cutely, seeing the fake anger in his features as he turned away from her. A big baby she said to herself. She walked up to him, her arms wrapping around his front, her head resting on his broad back. "I missed you too." She said back as he turned, a smile on his face. It fell seconds later, the charade coming to an end as he watched the look in her face. She withdrew. "What are you here for?" She asked. "Mum and Dad said there's an event tonight for the company, and that we were having dinner together." Irene looked at her watch. "Yeah I know." She said rather robotically. "I thought we could go together." He finished. She looked up at him. "I need to get ready. I have the dress and stuff just give me half an hour and I'll be ready. Wait in the lounge." She called over her shoulder rushing away from him, her heart beating erratically as she leaned against the door. Jackson Wang was going to be the death of her.
