The doctor had the posture of a soldier, she walked along the corridor with a deep sense of sophistication, her hair tied in a low pony, her blue scrubs covered by her doctors coat, she ran down the hall frantically as seriousness carved its way on her face, she was given directions by one of the nurses at the hospital as she ran into the emergency room, she watched as they tried to hold down the fort for her, a sense of relief as they saw her come in, she was gowned up as she looked at her senior. "What have we got?" She asked. Voice firm, and confident as she studied the body in front of her, gaging the situation, she nodded listening to what her senior was saying as she began working, "We need to operate here, we don't have time to run up to the OR." She said as the ER doctors stepped back, taking the scalpel in her hand, she began doing what she did best. Saving lives.

It wasn't until four hours later had she carefully extracted the bullet and re-suturing the damaged vessel. She took a step back, making sure that the oxygen levels were coming back up, she peeled of the latex gloves from her hands, yanking the face mask down as her best friend and fellow doctor looked at her. "That was brilliant Irene." Complimented Wendy. "You did that in record time." She said with a smile. "Thanks Wends." Irene replied, stretching and clicking her back into place as their other best friend, a nurse, named Joy undid her gown, throwing it to the bin. "Of course she did, she's Irene, is there anything she can't do?" She questioned Wendy as the girls laughed. Irene looked down at the chart, making quick notes as she reassessed the machines, a junior doctor named Yeri entering the scene "Unnie..." she called out the girls looking at her smiling, another part of their squad. "The daughter is outside alone, she's only five, I managed to sort her out because she was in the accident as well." Irene nodded finishing of the notes as she passed it to Wendy who looked over it, pocketing her pen, she looked up at Yeri smiling warmly "Where is she? I'll go talk to her." Yeri giving her directions told Irene who left moments later. Yeri stood next to Wendy as they glanced over Irene's notes, studying them "For a doctor she has the best handwriting out of all of you." Joy replied giggling as Wendy whacked her with the board. "Where's Suelgi?" She asked Yeri. "She's in surgery, has been for the past eight hours and seems to be going no where..." replied Yeri. Joy rubbed her temples. "Damn she had a date as well....sucks to be you guys I guess." She said laughing as she placed a hand On Yeri's shoulder "welcome to that world Yeri." Joy said cackling at the look on her face as the girls exited the room.

Irene walked around the corridor looking for the girl that Yeri had described to her, her head moving left and right until she spotted a young girl staring off into space. Irene saw the pain cemented deep within the child's eyes, the trauma causing her to remain quite. She walked up to her smiling at the nurse who was with her. The young girl looked at Irene, who felt her heart quench at the sight. The little girl noticed that Irene had the lithe movement of an athlete and the easy smile of one visiting a dear friend. Irene spoke with an accent and with her hands. With each word the fine fingers would flourish into the stagnant hospital air like birds, then settle as she listened to the answers of the little girl, like she had all the time in the world and nothing could interest her more than what she had to say. In matter of moments she had the little girl smiling as she engaged her in conversation. "So your Dad...is completely okay, he needs a bit of time to heal but I promise I'll look after him okay." She said as the girl smiled up at her, eyes shinning "Promise?" "Pinky promise." Irene replied wrapping her finger around hers as she looked at the nurse. "I need you to do me a favour. Is there away we can contact someone?" "Mum." Replied the little girl. "Okay how about you go with this Unnie and when you come back I'll have some sweets for you. How does that sound?" She watched the brightening of the child's face as she jumped into Irene's arms hugging her tight, which Irene returned. She smiled, ruffling her hair as the kid went with the nurse.

Irene walked back up to the desk noticing all eyes watching her as reached for a file. "Yahhh your amazing at this." Said one of the doctors, causing her to laugh as Wendy came up behind her hugging her. "Of course she's Irene. She's a pro at everything." Irene laughed as the girls rehuddled, Suelgi coming down moments later hand resting on her neck as she flopped into the seat dramatically "Why did I agree to do this." She said dramatically clicking her neck into place as the girls recoiled at the sound, laughing at what she was saying. She looked down at her watch "Oh thank god, I'm off...you guys want to go out?" She asked. Wendy, Yeri and Joy agreed as they turned to Irene "I can't, my Dad has called me home." They all tensed, Suelgi sitting up in her chair. "Are you going to be okay?" She asked. Irene sighed. "What's the worse that can happen?" She asked rolling her eyes as the girls laughed. "Call us if you need to okay?" Wendy said. "You don't have to be alone Irene..." she continued as the girls nodded at her. She attempted to smile as she put the file back. "I'll see you guys bright and early tomorrow." She winked at them with a pretend gun causing them to laugh as she retreated into the locker room.

An hour later she reached her father's house. A mansion. She hated this place. She shuddered as she sat in the car trying to brace herself. Her father was an army general. More precisely he was a general for the South Korean army. He was proud and patriotic. And she hated everything about this man. He was ruthless and cold with his own family, she laughed bitterly, she probably wasn't even considered that, just an extra add on to the perfect family he already had. She always sought his validation, yearning for his love and acceptance and instead all she was received was criticism and glares. She was not his daughter, her step mother would tell her...she was a burden to them all. They made her feel worthless. Like nothing. She had joined the army for him, progressing through the ranks quicker than any other, her missions deadly, suicidal missions. But still his back remained turned. She became a captain before receiving the title of Major and well on her path to further success until she left. She left because of him. The way he criticised her, telling her what she was doing was wrong, putting her down that god had cursed him with her as a daughter, he hated her for a reason she could no longer fathom. She tried blaming herself until she realised she was not the problem, he was. She gave up not wanting to lose her life on missions that she took only to gain his acceptance. And she left the army. It had been a year and she had gone back to her medical profession that she had already set up before she had left. He  looked at her in shame.

She left 'home' or hell as she would call it, fed up of the taunts, the sarcastic remarks and insults that were fed to her. She watched with resentment for years as he loved her half sister and brother as though they were gods gifts when they were off the rails. Wendy, Suelgi and Joy had all started working at the same hospital, Wendy and Suelgi, training with Irene years ago, they knew everything about her, and so did Yeri , the baby of their squad and sister of Suelgi, they knew about the military background, and the baggage that she came with but loved her nevertheless. They were her true family, and they knew the shit Irene had put up with for years, the hatred they shared for her family bigger than Irene's. She sighed looking at her phone to see a message from the girls "You got this!" She smiled. As she finally stepped out her car, slamming the door shut as she walked up the gigantic steps of the house. She rung the door bell, a sinking feeling felt in the pit of her stomach as her stepmother opened the door, wearing the fakest smile she had seen in awhile. Here we go, rang her brain, as she felt herself suffocate on the amount of perfume she had on. "Irene...what a pleasure it's been awhile child." Irene tensed, wearing her own facade. She heard the bitterness at the way she addressed her as 'child' a subtle reminder that Irene's place was below hers. "You look tired...those bags, gosh how do you expect to marry looking like that." She snapped, there was no truth to her words. Irene was stunning, a living goddess, her face perfectly symmetrical and each feature adding to the goddess like image, she had men swooning left right and centre, girls looking at her in resentment. She resisted the attempt to roll her eyes. "You try doing a fifteen hour shift and then let me know mother dear." She retorted back snidely. Refusing to acknowledge the comment her stepmother continued. "Your father wants to speak to you, he's in the study." Irene nodded as she walked briskly past her. Fumbling with her hands in anticipation as she tried to work out what he wanted. Knocking on the door she heard her father call come in. Entering she bowed to her father who nodded back at her as she stood awkwardly. Minutes of silence bounced of the walls as Irene felt her composure slip. "You asked for me." She vocalised, her father now paying attention to her. "Yes. I have received a proposal from a very close friend." She tensed. "You remember the Wang's?" He asked, as Irene replied yes. "Well they have a son, a true man... who they are looking to get married." Irene felt her heart stop as her lowered gaze shot up to her father. "They have asked for your hand....and I've said yes." Irene looked at him in disbelief "Why me! Why can't you get him to marry your other daughter?" "And why would I do that? She's too young. Your the perfect age and fit exactly what they want. They asked for you irene not your sister." Irene resisted the urge to roll her eyes, as she watched him "And what you conveniently forgot to tell the daughter who this actually concerns...you have made one of the biggest decision of my life without consulting me. Without asking me if this is what I want." He watched her, unbothered by her outburst. "How could you do that?" "I'm your father!" He shouted at her. "You've never acted like it!" She shouted back, continuing "Ever since Mum died, you've treated me like complete shit, the animals in this house get treated better than I do. I don't know what I did that made you hate me so much but this is a step too far. Everything I've done I've done for you, for you acceptance. But if you think I'm going to marry a stranger simply because you signed me up for it well you couldn't be more wrong because I've stopped looking for your validation." She breathed heavily as she watched him turn his back to her. "Please Irene....I owe them so much and I can't repay them financially-" "oh... I see. So your using me as a transaction, a business deal. As fucking property to sell off." She walked forward grabbing his arm and turning him around to her. "What a lame excuse of a father you are!" "IRENE!" She heard her stepmother shout, "Do not speak to your father like that!" She looked at him, whispering "I don't have a father, I became an orphan the day my mother died." She took a deep breath as silence rung out. "You've already sold me off, haven't you? You didn't call me here to give me an option, so I guess once again I'm gonna have to save the days because your lousy excuse of children couldn't give a shit if either of you were alive or dead. Fine. I'll marry whoever this is. But this is on your head." She retorted, turning around and slamming the door shut as she ran out of the house to the confines of her car, backing up in a rushed movement and pressing her foot hard agains the accelerator to get away as fast as she could. Returning home she opened the door of the apartment she shared with the girls as they watched her fling her bag, narrowly missing Joy who called out "Hey!" She moved towards her room, slamming her door so loud that they all jumped. "There's that military strength." Said Yeri. Wendy and Suelgi looked at each other, jokes aside, knowing that something had happened, worse than what they had prepared for.
