Chapter 25
We raced back to where Zephyr, Titan, Blaze hide in the shadows. Doing their best to not be seen by anyone. Two Griffins and pegasus were odd enough for wolves to see, I wasn't sure how humans would react to them.
"Ellie?" Zephyr asked. "That was quick."
"We're in the wrong place," Harmony answered.
"What?" Titan looked behind him at the Great Sphynx.
"That's not the Sphynx we're looking for, apparently," Edmond responded. "We have to go to Greece."
"I guess it's a good thing we were going there anyway," Zephyr said, shaking his mighty mane.
"Can we leave right now?" Blaze asked, motioning to the overly crowded markets.
"Yeah, I think it will be fine. Especially if you take off quickly and don't hesitate. I doubt anyone will be paying attention to us. They're too busy staring at the pyramids and shopping," I said. "Let's hurry and get to Greece."
"Hey. Um, I have a question," Harmony said.
"What?" Edmond asked.
"So, if we're not successful, um, what happens tot he humans?"
"What?" I asked.
"Yeah, if we're defeated, what's stopping the goblins and stuff from taking over the human world?"
"Oh. I, uh, I really don't know."
"Can they protect themselves against mythical creatures?"
I shrugged my shoulders as I climbed onto Zephyr's back.
He trotted out from his hiding place and broke out into a gallop going further into the desert. He really did not want to risk being caught by anyone taking off and flying away. I couldn't blame him. It was easy for me to blend in. He would never be able to with his massive wings.
Titan and Blaze followed close behind and we were soon soaring through the air. I was getting used to it. Hanging tightly to his mane while letting my head drop back. You could almost forget that there was a war going on not that far from where we were. You could almost just forget everything.
Zephyr dove below the clouds, I was shocked for a second until I saw the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranian Sea beneath us. The water shimmered in the sunlight as he dove even closer to the water's edge, skimming his hooves over the glass-looking liquid. I reached my hand down, feeling the cold flow quickly between my fingers.
A creature caught up to us, it turned onto its back and stared up at me. It looked like a woman. She smiled and sharp teeth showed in her gruesome mouth. Zephyr let out a loud whinny and jerked upward just as a grey, scaly hand breached the surface of the water.
"Take to the skies!" he shouted to Titan and Blaze. "Sirens!"
"Sirens?"
"Yes, Ellie. Sirens. They lure men into the depths of the ocean with their song."
"Why?"
"To kill them."
"That's terrible!" I gasped. "It's been shocking learning that there are so many mythics who are not so kind."
"There are a lot." He looked back to the two griffins. "We'll fly above the clouds until we reach Thebes."
"How long?" Edmond shouted.
"Maybe 20 minutes."
Flying was a lot faster than driving. It should have taken days for us to reach the city of Thebes. Thankfully with fast griffins and a pegasus, it was only taking us an hour.
As we flew above the clouds, the haunting melodies of the sirens grew fainter in the distance. I breathed a sigh of relief to have escaped the clutches of those deadly creatures, but the encounter wouldn't leave my mind any time soon.
As we continued our journey towards Thebes, the landscape below gradually changed from the sparkling blue of the Mediterranean Sea to lush greenery and rolling hills. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the horizon.
In the distance, I spotted the magnificent city of Thebes. Its grand architecture and towering walls stood as a testament to its rich history. Zephyr, Titan, and Blaze descended from the skies, landing gracefully just outside the city gates.
"Now what?" Harmony asked.
"Well, according to legend the Sphynx guards the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes, asking a question to travelers to allow them passage."
"Okay. Where is that?" Titan asked, looking around.
I shrugged my shoulders. "No idea, but you three need to stay out of sight. We'll come back for you."
Edmond, Harmony, and I went off in search of the Sphynx, hoping that the story was true and she still guarded the entrance. Somewhere."
"It's mostly all ruins here. How do we find anything?"
"I've never been to Thebes, Harmony. I have no idea. Let's just...walk, I guess?"
"This way," Edmond said, walking through an arch and down an ancient stone pathway.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"No, but let's try it."
We eventually came upon a large gate. At least, what remained of a large gate.
"Travelers three. Who wish to enter my great city, you must answer first, these riddles two."
"We were already in the city," Harmony whispered.
"Shhhh. It's the sphynx."
A mighty creature with the body of a lion, the head of an incredibly beautiful woman, and the wings of an eagle. Her tail swished as she smiled, revealing the gleaming teeth of a lion.
"What riddles great Sphynx?" I asked.
"Which is the creature that has one voice, but has four feet in the morning, two feet in the afternoon, and three feet at night?"
"What?" Harmony asked.
"Stop," Edmond said. "Okay let's think. An animal that has one voice, they have four feet in the morning only two in the afternoon, and then three at night. What animal is like that?"
"Um, one voice. Meaning it's one animal. Four legs, two legs, then three legs. A lizard?" I asked Edmond and Harmony.
"A lizard?"
"Yeah. I mean some loose limbs and regrow them, right?"
"Yeah, but that doesn't make sense. There is no guarantee that they'll lose two, regrow them and then lose another at certain times of day," Harmony said.
"Hmm. I know! I know the answer!" Edmond said.
"Man, what answer do you have?" the Spynx asked.
"Edmond !"
"It's man! A man crawls as a baby on all fours at the beginning of life or in the morning. As the man grows he walks on two legs, in the afternoon. And walks with a can as an old man, in the evening."
"Correct," the Sphynx said. "The second riddle. There are two sisters; one gives birth to the other, who in turn gives birth to the first. Who are they?"
"That makes even less sense!" Harmony groaned.
"No...no that one makes sense," I said. "And it's one we of all creatures should get!"
"What?" she asked.
"There are two sisters. One gives birth to the other who in turn gives birth to the first."
"How does that make sense?" Harmony whined.
"What is the biggest thing with us?"
"Huh?" Edmond asked.
"Us. Wolves. Who do we worship?"
"Um, Artemis."
"Right."
"The answer is Artemis?" Harmony asked.
"No. No. But, what is Artemis acquainted with?"
"The moon?"
"Right," I said. "The moon is at what time of day?"
"Night?"
"Right. And what precedes night?"
"Day," Edmond said.
"Right!"
"So the answer is day and night. Sisters who give birth to one another. Because night comes as day sets and day comes as night sets."
"Correct, woman," the Sphynx said. "You may enter my city."
"Actually, great Sphynx, we have an important question for you."
