Battle Of Liberty

Gary spun me around and bought me back and even into his arms as at least within twenty minutes; approximately thirty people had already dropped out of the dance competition.

"Looks like people are still dropping out, huh?" I heard Jake say to Valerie who nodded her head in response staring at the people who were already tired out.

Within the next forty-five minutes there were practically, say twenty people left dancing. My legs were burning in pain as I would say so, probably because dancing in this case was bopping, spinning or turning around didn't necessary always lose the energy as I'd hoped.

Gary on the other hand, was more alike spinning me or either talking to me whilst we were moving to the beat of the songs that were playing.

"Okay, everyone, we only have seven contestants left, what will happen?" Ashok called through the microphone after another ten minutes, I saw Valerie and Jake still dancing, him twirling her around in his arms, giggling to the movements whilst others were smiling to each other, placing their foreheads against each other or busting out different moves.

"I don't know why, but I feel like you can't stop staring at me." I heard someone say beside me.

"That's a lie." I heard another voice say.

"I'm pretty sure, its not." The boy spoke calmly, before the girl could respond to him the other boy who was busting the move had dropped onto the duo, ending up onto the floor.

"Ooh, another three are out!" I heard Ashok say into the microphone as the girl, the boy and the boy who had busted the move all got up and looked quite frustrated and saddened.

"Only four left, why don't we switch it up a little. Switch partners."

"You're not serious, are you?" A little voice spoke.

"Yup." Was his only reply, before Gary glanced at me as he twirled me around, I ended up in another set of hands. Known to have been as Jake's.

"Hey." He smiled as I gave him a small one in return.

He held both my hands and started talking to me, as the music continued to play, I could hear Valerie and Gary talk about something which only made Jake spin me around.

"So, are you enjoying yourself tonight?" Jake asked genuinely interested.

"Uhm, I suppose."

"Suppose? Does that mean there's something you're not happy about?" He asked holding both my hands in his grip.

"Not really, why would you ask." I asked with a slight laugh.

"Not many people say 'I suppose', figured you'd be upset." He shrugged whilst I heard Valerie giggle at whatever Gary was saying.

"Upset?" I furrowed my brows in confusion.

"Don't take it personally, but the way your eyes are filled with a dimmer light and the way you rarely smile, it feels like someone said something to you." Jake spoke softly making me breath out slowly through my nose.

"Don't worry, I don't mind what you said, but I am known as 'tranquil'." I gave him a little smile as he nodded his head.

"I thought you'd say tired." He shrugged as he was staring at me whilst he was dancing. I, on the other hand was moving my feet slightly to the beat.

"Leave that, I'm pretty sure you'd rather not be in here with sweaty bodies and drunk people, right?" He asked flashing a set of teeth as I nodded my head slowly.

"Because I don't; it's pretty cool what you can do when you're chilled with someone. You know what I mean?" He asked slightly scrunching his eyebrows.

"Yeah, I do."

"Switch partners." Ashok called as if he were a game show host.

Jake held onto my hands and spun me around before I landed into another set of arms, those belonging to Gary. He smiled at me.

"There's my partner. Are you enjoying this dance, so far?" He asked as we both switched positions.

"Probably, what about you?" I asked.

"It's going well, I've got my partner beside me." He spoke making me chuckle.

"There's that laugh we've been wanting to hear." He playfully spoke as I saw Valerie being spun but accidentally stepped on Jake's foot, making the pair stop dancing.

"We have a winner!" Ashok called as I saw everyone clap their hands.

"Well here we have it, Gary and Emma!" Somebody else spoke, I turned my head towards the voice to see Jeremy clapping with a grin, as everyone continued doing so.

After the clapping lowered down, people started moving to the rhythm of the beat whereas I moved away to take a seat. Truth to be told, I was sleepy.

Eight months, of sleeping, how could you possibly not be awake? Well, I suppose I'm under my usual habit and even people who run fast do get tired.

"There's the winner! Congratulations." Jeremy spoke grinning as he took a seat beside me.

"Thank you."

"No worries." He smiled.

"Congratulations, you deserved it." I heard another voice enter the conversation, Jake.

"Thank you." I nodded as he glanced at his brother.

"Charlie is calling you by the way." Jake spoke as Jeremy scrunched his brows slightly, he got off the stool and headed towards the direction of his friend.

Jake leaned against the counter beside me, the view of disco lights and people jumping, flailing their hands around as they were laughing with people in the dance floor.

"Are you alright? When Valerie stood in your foot?" I asked him as he smirked slightly.

"Yeah, I guess eight inch heels penetrate deeper than you think."

"Do you wanna go for a walk?" I asked him.

"Sure." He pushed himself off the counter as I got up from the stool, Jake allowing me to go first, as we both headed out the heated house party and into the fresh night breeze.

I felt the wind brush through my hair as I was walking with Jake by my side, my eyes felt watery as we were walking, through the wind.

"The fresh breeze can calm anybody down." I heard Jake breath out.

"It's relaxing and peaceful." I softly spoke.

"Unlike the party." He scoffed as we both chuckled lightly.

"Do you, uhm, wanna play a game?" I asked.

"What type of game?" Jake asked curiously.

"Ask each other questions?" He suggested.

"Okay." I shrugged.

"First question, what's your favourite colour?" He asked.

"The colour aqua or midnight blue." I paused. "What about you?"

"Cerulean or red." He nodded as I agreed.

"Those are pretty good colours." I smiled.

"So are yours." He smiled with a nod.

"What's your favourite movie?"

"Er, The Dark Knight." He scratched his eyebrow.

"What's yours?" He asked.

"Captain America." I responded with a smile.

"Your favourite book?" He asked.

"Morganville series."

"Do you have a favourite book?"

"Don't really read." He scratched his neck.

"Favourite moment."

"Probably when I scored my first touchdown." Jake admitted as we were walking passing by street lamps and dimmed houses.

"Favourite quote." He asked as we were passing by houses.

"The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless."

"That's quite deep."

"Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore."

"I kinda like that quote, I guess." He admitted.

"Have you ever felt like that before?"

"I guess, I mean I used to have a friend who did something, then our friendship kind of deteriorated." He shrugged.

"Was this friend a girl?" I slowly asked.

"How'd you know?" Jake asked looking confused. I was staring ahead of me seeing the dimmed street lights guiding us.

"Well, if it were a guy it would've been something different." I answered.

"What do you mean?"

"There'd be more of a sensitive side if it were referring to a girl, whereas a boy it differs."

"I never thought about it like that, but I guess you're kinda right." We were now walking towards the house that was filled with illuminating lights, or known as Ashok's party.

"Back to square one." Jake breathed out as he opened the door, as I followed behind,

"...there you are, I've been calling you for so long." I heard a voice say as we were passing by.

"Amy, don't take her shoe." Someone drunk spoke.

"Wow, they're all goners." I heard Jake say I was brushing past people.

"Yo, Taverns!" I moved out of the crowd to see Jake look up. The people who called him were gesturing to their little huddle.

He shook his head as they still called him.

"Come on, man!"

"Aren't you going to hang with your friends?" I asked calmly.

"I can't let a pretty girl like you be left all alone, now can I?" I heard him say with sincerity and playfulness. I only felt my lips quirk up into a smile.

"You should hang out with your friends." I saw his friends trying to usher him over there, as Jake gave in to his friends.

"Alright, see you later." He called as he manoeuvred his way to his friends whereas I was faced by a crowd of girls.

"Well, well, well, look who it is. Princess Emma Winchester. Sorry Tomboy Winchester." I heard the voice say as their posse was giggling away.

"How's that fatal injury of yours, has it healed yet? Oh wait, it won't ever heal again." I heard the voice say fake-surprise.

I was about to walk away when someone side-stepped in front of me. I decided to move the other way but someone side-stepped me again. I glanced at them before standing in my spot.

"Already given up? Wow, that's actually quite surprising, Winchester. You were never one to back away, ever."

"Let me guess you're also mute, right?" I felt my insides cool as I was just listening to her pathetic words.

"What do you want, Karina?" I finally spoke staring at her seeing the shock in her eyes,

"So she does talk. The question is not what I want, it's what you need to do." I furrowed my brows slightly.

"Back away from the people here at this party, unless you want to save your pathetic dignity which you hold so high." She lowly spoke turning away.

"Do you really think you threatening me is going to work?" I could already see a little crowd forming, the music dialling down, turning on her heel, Karina glanced at me.

"Excuse me?"

"Did I just hear right, did you just talk back to me, Winchester?"

"Because the last I remember you were on your knees crying after your disgrace of an injury tarnishing the reputation of your school team. To think about right now, you were such a disgrace then that you still remain a disgrace right now." She pushed my shoulder making it slightly move, but my feet remained on the ground. I heard ooh's escape from the crowd. I saw Gary appear by my side.

"You got the hottest jock to join you, you could've been with me." She stated.

"That will never happen and you know that." Gary answered calmly.

"Remember Tomboy, whatever you do, you'll never accomplish in it." She walked away as I heard the ooh's continue and some upset looks.

Familiar faces were staring at me with confusion, curiosity, sympathy and importantly looking down on me. I shuffled my feet away heading towards the backyard where I saw only stars and heard the sound of music blare again.

'Princess Emma Winchester. Sorry Tomboy Winchester.'

'...unless you want to save your pathetic dignity which you hold so high'

I blinked away that moment and saw someone had come to my side.

"Karina Lear, your opponent turns up." I heard Gary breathe out.

I was only staring at the small batch of flowers blossoming out as a flicker of light shone down on them, the midnight sky was a dark blue and the stars twinkling with awe. You may have noticed that I prefer the breeze, not only is it calm but it's also relaxing.

"I wanna go home." I spoke, seeing Gary nod his head.

"You can stay if you want."

"I'd rather not be at a party without my best friend." He smiled as we both were walking out through the backyard door and into the main roads.

We were walking and then I realised where we were at. Ice-Cream Frenzy, the ice-cream parlour, me and Gary love going to.

I pushed the door as we both entered the colourful yet dimmed store. There were less people here probably because it's past midnight.

"Hey, Gary, Emma. How are you both?" I heard Harold call, he was in his early thirties and loved serving people ice-cream, I quote, 'something about seeing a smile on people's faces when they see sugar.'

"Hi, Harold, I'm good thank you, how are you?" I asked.

"Hi. Good, good and you?" Gary also spoke.

"Pretty good, is it the usual?" He asked as we both nodded our heads in response.

We went to our usual seats which was a dimmed booth with perfect comfort there was to offer at this store. Sliding in, as Gary had done the same, I was staring at the interior.

A few moments later our orders had arrived my hot chocolate fudge cake with ice-cream and Gary's slice of chocolate cake with golden syrup with strawberry ice cream to the side.

I picked up my fork and started take a forkful of the fudge cake and some of the ice-cream, scooping it into my mouth. The hot feeling oozed down with the cold ice-cream surfacing on my tongue. Taking another bite, I saw Gary was doing the same.

"So, even-." Gary looked up at me with the fork in his mouth "-though we did win ice-cream it is." Gary smiled at me.

"You know I love ice-cream, even though having ice-cream with your best friend makes it much more funnier." He admitted making me laugh slightly.

"I guess I have that affect on people." I joked as he laughed along.

We both were chattering and finished our desserts, Gary paying as I gave a $10 tip from my pocket as we both exited the place walking along the cool streets of Elm City.

"She honestly did that!" Gary shook his head as I was listening to him speak about some girl who tried to kiss him.

"You should've been there, I handled it pretty well." He brushed off cooly.

"You ducked, didn't you?" I asked slightly grinning.

"Kissed the wall." Gary spoke placing his hands into his pockets.

As we were walking someone brushed past me, apologising as my brow arched slightly with my head slightly turned to my shoulder as we started walking again.

We reached my house as we both stopped walking. It was dark, all the lights were switched off, so I could only make out a shadowy Gary.

"Did you have fun?" He asked.

"Met new people." I answered as I saw him smile.

"It was an average." I shrugged.

"Classical Winchester, already rating the parties again, I see." Gary stretched.

"I'll see you tomorrow." Gary greeted as he engulfed me into a hug. I hugged him back before he let go of me.

"Goodnight." We both spoke in unison as I headed up the steps to my house. I pulled the keys out of my pocket and inserted it into the keyhole before opening the door. The lights were switched off as I closed the door. I took my shoes off and went up the steps, heading into the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and washed my face before getting changed into a pair of pyjamas and fell into my bed, closing my eyes and falling asleep.
