Carnivals at midnight

There are things that you know from working in the same city for all your life, little quirks you pick up.  I learned this about thirteen years ago, listen for the music.  The fair visits to Gotham has always been few and far between, however the old fairground still stood with the fading colored tents and rides too broken to keep going. It was one night that I walked through and heard music.  At first I was scared, freezing up and looking around.  I hid for the cover of shadows at the stands that used to hold rigged games had turned on the lights.
"Puddin' this is wonderful" I held still, looking out.  I know the laugh that followed, what was he doing here? Nothing good.
"You're welcome, I always knew my boy would grow up in the happiest place, just wish I was able to finnish fixing it" The crazy clown sounded almost sincer.  I peeked around the corner, Harley Quinn stood next to the Joker, but instead of a bat in her hand, it was a bundle of blanks, with a small hand sticking up; she was holding a baby.
"It looks lovely, and you can always keep working.  I know you come up with your best ideas when you're working"  They made their way around, I stuck to the shadows and made my way out.
For the next few months I notice that this was a normal thing, the music and lights would turn just about midnight.  But one night it didn't. It was strange, I kept walking around.  At two o'clock that morning a bank was robbed, an attack Joker took credit for. A few months later it happened again, a silent night with a morning that had Joker bring about chaos.
Every now and again I would look, seeing the small baby growing up.  He didn't remind me much of my old enemy, thick black hair and a rounded face. He did have that almost creepy smile, but it might just be because he liked the lights.  I made sure not to bother him, to stay hidden.  I had my own child to get home to, my own son to raise. I wanted so much for him to have a normal life, to never worry about what I was or what i did. That's why I would always listen.  A silent night was a deadly night.
