Prologue: Just Being Myself

(In a social media video online, Barbara's face appeared on the screen. She waved to the camera.)

Barbara: "Hey, there! Barbara Gordon, here! This is my first video about me, so I hope I get likes or comments. Okay, here we go. About my normal life, it's actually pretty good at first, but then things get mixed up in the end. Pretty strange, right? I could agree. What is my age you ask? Well, I just turned sixteen and people say that I'm supposed to be in high school, but I already graduated from that and moved on to Burnside College University of Technology. Quite a huge mouthful, huh? Try saying that fast without stuttering. Heh. I should probably abbreviate it to BCUT. There. Isn't that much better than saying the entire thing? Now, what I do in BCUT, I basically clean monitors and computer screens. Boooorrrring. I know what you guys are thinking. Barbara, why are you cleaning computers, when they are so much more things you can do. Yeah, I'm getting to that part. I also do online research about this website called hooq. Now, what is hooq? It's basically about meeting new people, socialize and stuff like that. I usually be on there when I'm on my lunch break. Keep that a secret. Anyway, that's probably not the only reason I'm talking to you about me. You know just erase all this from your head and let me start off in the beginning when I graduated high school, so we can take it from there." (She clears her throat.)

Barbara: (Narrates) "Alright, a few years back, say about two years ago, I graduated from Burnside High School and it was during the summer." (The graduation took place in a stadium indoors. The people were cheering when the seniors came up and the announcer were calling out their names as they were getting their diplomas and certificates.)

Announcer: "Barbara Gordon." (The people were screaming and clapping. Jim Gordon was standing up in the crowd, clapping and tearing up.)

Jim: "That's my girl, right there!" (A woman tapped on his shoulder.)

Woman: "Congratulations on your daughter!"

Jim: "Thank you!" (The woman smiled and Jim went to see his daughter outside.)

Jim: "Congrats on your graduation, sweetheart." (Barbara turned around and saw her dad smiling with tears coming down his cheeks.)

Barbara: "Dad!" (She jumped in his arms and Jim rubbed her smooth red hair.)

Jim: "I'm so proud of you, Barb. If only your mother were still here, she would've been happy to see you graduated." (Barbara started to cry as well.)

Barbara: "I miss her."

Jim: "I know you do, I just wish she never left."

Barbara: (Sniffled) "Me too." (She lets her dad go and wiped her tears away.)

Jim: (Clears his throat) "So, college student. What do you want to do?" (Barbara laughed and thought about it.)

Barbara: "Umm...I kind of in a burger mood as my reward." (Jim smiled at that and chuckled.)

Jim: "I knew you were going to say that. Pauli's Diner or closer?"

Barbara: "Pauli's Diner, dad. You know I love their burgers."

Jim: "And you know I love their chicken salads. You do realize that it's located on Miagani Island and Grand Avenue. It's a long drive from here."

Barbara: "I know that. So, let's go. I'm starving." (She gave him the sad eyes and Jim rolled his eyes.)

Jim: "Okay, we're going. There's no reason to be so dramatic." (He walked towards the car and Barbara followed behind him, grinning.)

Barbara: "Works everytime." (Jim started the car and Barbara puts in her headphones and started to listen to pop music while on road. She looked out the window and saw so many cars driving past them. A few minutes later, Jim's car stopped because there were traffic held up all the way to Pauli's Diner as they were trying to find a way to park at the parking lot.)

Jim: "Wow. So many people want to get some food as well. Looks like Pauli's are really busy today." (Barbara looks at the long line as she took off her headphones.)

Barbara: "Wow, that is a lot of people. Maybe it's because it's summer time and people want to get a bite to eat, so they can be satisfied and have a really fun summer."

Jim: "You're right, Babs. I think you're absolutely right." (Barbara crossed her arms and crossed her legs.)

Barbara: "Of course I'm right, dad! It's summer!"

Jim: "That is true."

Barbara: "And I love you!"

Jim: "That is also true." (Barbara was laughing at him and Jim made a silly face in the rear view mirror. The traffic finally moved and Jim parked his car in the parking lot.)

Jim: "Here we are. Pauli's Diner."

Barbara: "Finally. I can get a burger to eat."

Jim: "And I can get my chicken salad. Let's go inside." (Barbara got out of the car and Jim opened the door for Barbara.)

Barbara: "Thanks, dad."

Jim: "You're welcome." (Barbara found a booth for both of them to sit. Jim sat across from her.)

Jim: "Are you excited to go to college?"

Barbara: "Oh, yeah. I can't wait till I do."

Jim: "That's good. Excitement is a good thing to have." (He strokes his mustache as Barbara thought in her mind of what she wants to do when she gets out. It came to her mind as quick as a lightning bolt. She started to twiddle with her thumbs on the table.)

Barbara: "Hey, uh, dad?"

Jim: "What is it, honey?"

Barbara: "I was thinking of...when I get out of college or somehow when I'm almost done with it..."

Jim: "Go on, Babs. Say what you want to say." (Barbara took in a deep breath and closed her eyes to make sure whatever she says will confirm it.)

Barbara: "Okay. Dad, I want to be a part of the police business just like you."

Jim: "Honey, that's a really big task and it's risky. I don't want you to arrest savage, mean and disgusting criminals."

Barbara: "That's why you got my back if anything like that goes wrong."

Jim: "But still, honey. I don't want you to be a part of the police team." (Barbara's smile begins to frown and became a little sad.)

Barbara: "What? Why not?" (Jim held her hands tightly.)

Jim: "Because I don't want my daughter to be hurt. It's something that I can never handle. You saw what happened when your mother left. I couldn't bear to see her go, not you too, Babes. It's too dangerous and besides you're too sweet and kind to be doing police work. We need firm and aggressive officers that are willing to take part of the job. You're only sixteen, they won't accept that. I'm sorry, but that's my final answer." (Barbara looks down and sighed.)

Barbara: "No, I get it. I understand, dad. It's not a job for a sixteen year old like me to do police work like you do."

Jim: "That's my girl." (A waitress named Sharon Jones came up to Barbara and Jim with a pencil in notepad in hand.)

Sharon: "Hello, my name is Sharon and I'll be your..." (She noticed Jim and smiled at him.)

Sharon: "Well, well, well. Commissioner. It's been a while since I seen you."

Jim: "Yes, I know. Police work can get all stuck up your nerves for a while. It's hard work."

Sharon: "I can believe that. Let me tell you. And your daughter I heard so much about that I finally see her before me. How are you, sweetheart?" (Barbara smiled brightly at her.)

Barbara: "I'm doing fine, Ms. Jones."

Sharon: "Mrs." (Jim's eyebrows shot upwards in amazement.)

Jim: "Mrs. Jones. You're married?"

Sharon: "Just recently. Have a look at that." (She showed her ring finger at them. Barbara was hypnotized by the diamond.)

Barbara: "It's beautiful!" (Jim smiled at Sharon.)

Jim: "Well, congratulations. Also my daughter just graduated high school."

Sharon: "Get out. Congratulations to you!"

Barbara: "Thank you." (Sharon laughed and smiled.)

Sharon: "I'm probably holding up the people who still needs to order. Gosh, being a waitress is something else."

Barbara: "I can tell. They just keep piling on and on. It really just keep going non stop."

Sharon: "I hear you and since you graduated, I have a treat for you sitting on the counter. So, you're going to order first."

Barbara: "Really?"

Sharon: "Sure!"

Jim: "Go ahead, Babs."

Barbara: "Bacon cheese burger."

Sharon: "With fries on the side?" (Barbara snaps her fingers and winked.)

Barbara: "You got it!" (Sharon chuckled and smiled.)

Sharon: "Commissioner, I love your daughter. She's so hip and cool!"

Jim: "I know, Mrs. Jones. She's has her mother's charm." (Barbara smiled at Jim and he winked back at her.)

Sharon: "So, don't tell me. Chicken salad, right? Crisp tomatos, ranch and the whole shebang?"

Jim: "You know me well." (Sharon nodded proud at herself.)

Sharon: "I got them both right. Oh, and drinks?"

Barbara: "Vanilla and chocolate shake with whipped cream."

Jim: "One glass of sweet tea."

Sharon: "Got you covered. Be right back." (Sharon went behind the counter and spoke with the chefs about what Jim and Barbara ordered. Barbara's cellphone pinged and she looked at her phone. It was an email about the college she's going to attend.)

Jim: "What's that, darling?"

Barbara: "It's the application for the college that I'm about to attend. They sent me an email."

Jim: "Well, that was fast."

Barbara: "Should I fill it out?"

Jim: "Not right now. When we get home."

Barbara: "Okay, at home, then." (She saved it into her bookmark section and turned off her phone. Sharon came back with their food and sets it on the table.)

Sharon: "Here we are. Your bacon cheese burger and vanilla chocolate shake with whipped cream." (She sets Barbara's food in front of her.)

Barbara: "Thanks."

Sharon: "You're welcome and here's your chicken salad with everything and your glass of sweet tea."

Jim: "Everything looks great, Mrs. Jones. Thank you."

Sharon: "You're welcome both of you and I'll leave the check right next to you, Commissioner." (She sets the check down next to Jim's elbow.)

Jim: "Alright."

Sharon: "You two enjoy!"

Barbara and Jim: "Thank you." (Sharon walked towards the other people to take their orders. Barbara bites into her bacon cheese burger with a good crunch sound from the bacon. Barbara closed her eyes and savoured every bite she took.)

Barbara: "Wow, I'm in love." (Jim chuckled while eating his chicken salad.)

Jim: "How is it, Babs?"

Barbara: "A dream come true. I'm going to take a picture of this burger and send it to my old friend Alysia."

Jim: "Sounds like a good idea." Barbara took back out her phone and pressed the camera icon. She aimed the lense towards the burger and took a good picture of it.)

(Barbara smiled at the picture she took and sent it to Alysia.)

Barbara: "Awesome." (Alysia texted to Barbara.)

Alysia: (Texted) "That looks incredible, Barbara! I hope I can come to college, so I can see you. Right now, I'm in China. 😄" (Barbara was happy for Alysia and texted back.)

Barbara: (Texted) "That sounds fun, Alysia. I hope you have a great time!" (Alysia texted back to Barbara.)

Alysia: (Texted) "Oh, I know I will. Okay. Gotta go! I'm going to see the parade and everything!" (Barbara smiled and texted back.)

Barbara: (Texted) "Okay, you be careful over there and don't eat too much Chinese food! 😆" (Alysia texted back.)

Alysia: (Texted) "Hey, I love Chinese food! Don't hate! Also, I heard that you graduated! Congrats! 😀👍🎉" (Barbara smiled and softly chuckled.)

Barbara: (Texted) "Thanks. Now, get off the phone. You're making me lose some of my battery juice. It's at 40%." (Alysia texted back.)

Alysia: (Texted) "You really need to charge your phone overnight. That's what I do. Take care of yourself and I'll see you soon."

Barbara: (Texted) "Bye, Alysia. ✌" (Alysia texted a smiley face at the end of their conversation and Barbara puts her phone back in her pocket. She looked at Jim and he ate his entire salad.)

Barbara: "Wow, dad. You sure were hungry."

Jim: "Hey, a police officer always have an appetite for something healthy."

Barbara: "Funny. I thought that police officers only drink coffee and eat jelly donuts."

Jim: "That's their treat and let me guess you want to be a police officer only if you get coffee and jelly donuts?" (Barbara scratches behind her head.)

Barbara: "Uh...maybe?"

Jim: "Barbara, that's not right."

Barbara: "I know that." (Jim looks at her half eaten sandwich and leftover fries.)

Jim: "It seems like you're full." (Barbara wipes her mouth with a napkin.)

Barbara: "I am. I'm going to save it for later in case I get hungry again."

Jim: "Good thinking, Barb." (Sharon Jones came back to check on Barbara and Jim.)

Sharon: "How's everything going over here?"

Jim: "It was very delicious. Thank you, Mrs. Jones."

Sharon: "No problem."

Barbara: "Can I get a to-go box, please?"

Sharon: "With the surprise too?"

Barbara: "Sure, why not."

Sharon: "Okay, I'll be right back with you." (Jim was signing the bill and puts a tip on the table. Sharon came back with a big container and a small container and gave it to Barbara.)

Sharon: "Here you are, honey."

Barbara: "Thank you, Mrs. Jones."

Jim: "I left a little tip for you on the table."

Sharon: "Thank you so much, Commissioner and here's your receipt."

Jim: "Thank you."

Sharon: "You both have a wonderful night."

Jim and Barbara: "You too." (They both got up and left the Diner.)

Barbara: "She was very nice."

Jim: "Yeah, Mrs. Jones is a very nice lady. Ready to go home?"

Barbara: "Yes, I am ready." (Jim opened the passenger door for her and Barbara went inside to put on her seatbelt.)

Barbara: "Thanks, dad."

Jim: "You're welcome, Barb." (He cranked up the engine and they got home in the afternoon. Barbara puts her food in the fridge and Jim puts his trenchcoat on the coat racket.)

Jim: "Okay, Babs. You go do whatever you do and I'm going to go take a little nap."

Barbara: "Okay, dad. I'm going to go swimming in the pool."

Jim: "Don't stay outside too late."

Barbara: "I won't." (Barbara went in her bedroom and grabbed her bathing suit. She went inside the bathroom and started to put it on. She went out of the sliding door and dived into the pool. She was underwater for quite a while to see how long she can hold her breath. A few hours passed and the sun went down. Jim heard his cellphone ringing. He picked it up and answered.)

Jim: "Hello?" (A woman was communicating with him.)

Woman: (COM) "Sir, this is an emergency! You have to wake up. This is really urgent!"

Jim: "What is it, Montoya?"

Renee: (COM) "Criminal activity is located in Downtown Gotham Bank. A robbery has been started."

Jim: "I can guess who started that."

Renee: (COM) "Two-Face and his goons? I think you are right, Commissioner."

Jim: "Then we better call you know who."

Renee: (COM) "I couldn't agree more. We better get on with it, sir."

Jim: "Roger that. I'm coming." (Jim puts on his trenchcoat and loads up his pistol. He puts it in his holster and calls out to Barbara.)

Jim: "Hey, Barbara. I'm going out for a while. Something came up and make sure you lock the door." (Barbara held up an okay sign. 👌)

Barbara: "Will do!" (Jim smiled and went out the door. Barbara was finished swimming in the pool and grabbed her towel. She wrapped it around her waist as she went towards the door and locked it. Then she went back in the bathroom to take a shower. Meanwhile, Jim drove quickly towards the GCPD building got up to the roof access. He saw the bat activator and turned it on towards the sky. The bat signal illuminated through the clouds and Renee appeared next to Jim.)

Renee: "I hope he shows up."

Jim: "He will. He always shows up when trouble is brewing in Gotham. I trust him with my life."

Renee: "That's a big change. Usually, you hated him."

Jim: "For parading through the streets like he's a gargoyle? No, I hated him because I didn't trust masked freaks in my city, but by his actions, I believe in him and you should, too." (Renee looked down at the ground.)

Renee: "I do. It's just hard sometimes to believe."

Jim: "I hear ya. I hope Waller and her Agency won't be a huge problem after that stunt they pulled towards me. Calling me out and taking away my pride doing police work? That's a really big issue. Who do you think she is?"

Renee: "A very salty person who's only looking out for herself."

Jim: "Exactly. Along with Bruce, too? He may be just as horrible as she is. And how the hell did Harvey get out of his cell in Arkham? It was tight security everywhere."

Renee: "Maybe he gave them two sides of the coin? Which one would live and the other would die."

Jim: "And he probably ended shooting both of them."

Renee: "That's what I thought as well."

Jim: "Well, let's just hope our friend will take him out." (Alfred looks out the window and saw the bat signal. Be went to the Batcave to get Bruce.)

Alfred: "Bruce, there's trouble at the GCPD. Seems like the Commissioner needs you."

Bruce: "Alright, I'm on my way and is that remote ready?"

Alfred: "For the Batmobile? It should be ready on your wrist module. All you have to do is press the button and it should arrive with no problems."

Bruce: "Good. Thanks, Alfred. I'm off."

Alfred: "Be safe, Bruce. I'll let Tiffany know that you left so she can work on something that you might need later on."

Bruce: "Got it." (Bruce left the Batcave and meanwhile back to Barbara, she was sitting on the couch watching a little cartoons until she got up and went to the fridge to get her food. Barbara then heard her phone vibrate and she went towards it to pick it up. She looked at her emails and it was the college application saying she has five minutes left to fill it out.)

Barbara: "Well. I guess I better get it over with. My dad's not here, so I got to fill it in." (She filled it in with her information and sent it to them.)

Barbara: "That should do it. Problem solved." (The microwave beeped and Barbara got her food out. She sat down and ate her burger with her fries in peace.)
