Chapter 2: College Day!

(The morning rose and Barbara got up with excitment knowing that it's her first day at college. She stretched her arms out and yawned gently. She got undressed and hit the showers. She was humming to herself while washing up. When she was done, she dried herself off and her hair with a towel. She then grabbed her toothbrush and puts some toothpaste on it. She brushed her teeth everywhere to make sure she didn't miss a spot. After that, she blow dried her hair and puts on her blouse and pants on. Then finally, she curled her the ends of her hair to perfection.)

Barbara: "All set to go." (She grabbed her phone and bag.)

Jim: "Babs, breakfast!"

Barbara: "Oh, coming!" (She left her room and closed the door. She saw Jim making eggs, bacon and toast.)

Barbara: "Morning, dad." (Jim turned around and saw Barbara smiling at him.)

Jim: "Look at you. You're beautiful."

Barbara: "Thank you, dad." (Jim kissed her cheek and she smiled. Then she was concerned.)

Barbara: "How was last night, dad?" (Jim was thinking about that question.)

Jim: "It was uh, it was fine. Nothing to worry about, Babs. It's police business after all." (She nodded at that in agreement.)

Barbara: "You're right. I don't know why I even asked that question. Forget about it." (Jim sets the plates down on the table.)

Jim: "I made breakfast."

Barbara: "It looks great. I can't wait to eat it." (She sits down and grabs her fork.)

Jim: "I'll say the prayer."

Barbara: "Okay." (Jim says the prayer and Barbara opened her eyes when he was done.)

Barbara: "Amen." (She stabs the eggs with her fork and took a bite.)

Barbara: "Wow."

Jim: "What's the matter? You don't like it? Too hard, too soft?"

Barbara: "No, no. It's very delicious, dad. Good work."

Jim: "Thanks, Babs. I know it's been a long time since your mother taught me how to cook for the first time."

Barbara: "Well, I'd say that she taught you very well, dad. I'm happy that you're trying."

Jim: "I appreciate that, honey."

Barbara: "I know you do. Well, I better get going. I don't want to be late."

Jim: "Wait, you signed the application?"

Barbara: "Of course I did. I didn't want you to stress over more paperwork. So, I decided to fill it out myself."

Jim: "Wow, you're really growing up, Babs."

Barbara: "Yep and you know what adults say, kids grow up too fast."

Jim: "Exactly. You be careful over there and be watchful for boys. They can do some devious things to you."

Barbara: "Oh, I'll keep an eye on them, dad. Don't you worry and if I need help, I'll be sure to call or text you right away."

Jim: "That's my girl and same goes for strangers." (Barbara opens the door.)

Barbara: "And the same goes for strangers." (She laughs at him.) "See you later, dad." (She chuckles as she closed the door and Jim locked it. He chuckled as well.)

Jim: "My darling daughter is growing up." (He saw the picture of Jim and Barbara together when she was a little kid and he almost teared up, but smiled. Barbara ran to catch the school bus and sat in a random seat to look out the window. She looks in her bag to get her headphones out, but somehow it wasn't in there because she left it at the house.)

Barbara: "Crap. I knew I forgot something. Oh, well." (She continued to look out the window and forgets about her headphones. A few minutes later, she saw the college and it was huge. Every new student on the bus was amazed at the sight of it. When the bus driver stopped, every student got off the bus. The bus driver stopped Barbara and Barbara looked confused.)

Barbara: "Uh, excuse me, sir, but this is my stop."

Bus driver: "I know it is your stop, but I know who you are."

Barbara: "Uh, you do?"

Bus driver: "Of course. You're the Commissioner's daughter! I have heard that you're attending this college."

Barbara: "Yep, that's me. I'm the Commissioner's daughter." (She looked both ways feeling awkward about this conversation.)

Bus driver: "I hope you have fun time here."

Barbara: "Yeah...I hope." (She smiled at him.)

Bus driver: "Have a great day."

Barbara: "Thanks, you too." (She gets off the bus and speed walked towards the entrance.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Man, that guy is a straight up weirdo. How does he know my name and how did it pop up in a random conversation? This is really strange." (She walked pass a classroom, but looked inside of it.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Now, what have we here? A ballet class? In a technical university? That's really interesting. I guess not everything is technical and here I am talking to myself. God, I need friends and badly." (She saw an African American girl practicing ballet with the Mozart Turkish March song. Barbara was really impressed by her fluid movements.)

Ballet Teacher: "Yes, good. Good movements. Keep going." (The girl kept ballet dancing and tries to spin perfectly, but somehow broke her hamstrings in her legs. The girl fell on the floor and screamed in terror and pain. Barbara's eyes grew wide in fear.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Oh, no!" (Barbara tries to open the door, but it was locked. She got upset and yet she thought of another plan. She kicked the door with such force, it actually broke. She ran in and grabbed the girl.)

Barbara: "Quick, where's the clinic? Matter of fact, a doctor! She needs help!"

Ballet Teacher: "The clinic is down the hall and to the right."

Barbara: "Thank you and I promise I'll fix the door." (Barbara picks the girl up bridal style and carried her out the door.)

Ballet Teacher: "No need. I'll call someone to fix the door." (Barbara thought about what she did back there.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Holy crap! What just happened back there?! Did I have super strength or something? Did I even drink orange juice this morning because that was incredible! Whoa, this is a strange day indeed." (She got her to the clinic and the girl was passed out after the doctor gave her a pill to keep her steady and asleep.)

Doctor: "Thank you for bringing her here when she was in pain."

Barbara: "You're welcome." (She smiled and then points at the girl.) "Is she going to okay?"

Doctor: "I honestly don't know, but I think she'll be okay."

Barbara: "Alright, I better get to class."

Doctor: "Welcome to Gotham University of Technology, Barbara Gordon."

Barbara: "Thanks, doctor." (She walked out of the clinic and was totally out of it.)

Barbara: "I don't even know what's going on anymore." (Suddenly, a text came from Barbara's cellphone and it was Alysia again.)

Alysia: (Texted) "Hey, girlfriend! How's college?" (Barbara smiled and texted back to her.)

Barbara: (Texted) "Well, so far? I barely started and everything here is so strange."

Alysia: (Texted) "Strange?😕 How come?" (Barbara thought about what she was going to text to Alysia.)

Barbara: (Texted) "First off, almost everyone knows who I am and second, this college is so huge, I could get lost in it every five seconds."

Alysia: (Texted) "I know what it's like to get lost in a big school. Believe me, I had trouble finding my way around the campus, but what? 😮 Everyone knows who you are?" (Barbara rolled her eyes.)

Barbara: (Texted) "I know right?"

Alysia: (Texted) "Are you like a celebrity or something because I want my name to be noticed by everyone just like you, but if you were a celebrity, I would fangirl you in a freaking heartbeat! 😂😃" (Barbara snickered and texted back.)

Barbara: (Texted) "You are so silly, Alysia, but I don't think I want to be a celebrity. Besides I don't want paparazzi to sneak some pics at me while I'm in my house doing somthing like they're a bunch of stalkers watching your every move. 😨"

Alysia: (Texted) "Yeah, I hear ya. Well, my friend. I have to go, but let me know how college went later, okay?"

Barbara: (Texted) "Sure, why not. I'm probably late for class anyway. See you later, Alysia. 😁✌"

Alysia: (Texted) "Peace out, Babs! 😊" (Barbara turns off her phone and went to class. The teacher saw Barbara entered.)

Teacher: "Well, well. If it isn't Miss Gordon late for her first day in class."

Barbara: "Yeah, about that..."

Teacher: "Don't want to hear it. Have a seat, Miss Gordon."

Barbara: "Okay...." (She finds a seat next to the window and sat down. The students snicker and looked at Barbara. The teacher shushed them.)

Teacher: "Students, you don't want me calling you out, now do I?"

Students: "No."

Teacher: "Mr. Grayson." (He was writing something on a piece on paper and it was a little poem by himself. He looked up and saw the teacher.)

Grayson: "Yes, Ms. Charlotte?"

Charlotte: "You're a nice young man and you're really quiet. How about you sit next to Miss Gordon and away from these disrespectful and noisy students."

Grayson: "I would actually love that a lot, Ms. Charlotte."

Charlotte: "Good. Now, hurry before I change my mind."

Grayson: "Glad too." (He grabbed his bookbag and his composition notebook. He headed towards to Barbara and sat next to her. The teacher grabbed stacks of paper and looked over at the students.)

Charlotte: "Now, who would like to volunteer to pass these mini quizzes out?" (No students raised their hands and Charlotte saw Barbara.)

Charlotte: "Miss Gordon."

Barbara: "Yes?"

Charlotte: "You seem like a nice young girl. May you pass these out for me?"

Barbara: "Okay." (Charlotte gave her the papers and Barbara passed them out to the students and after that, she sat back down in her chair.)

Charlotte: "Good job, Miss Gordon. Now, it's only five questions so take your time. No need to rush. Afterwards, when everyone is done, you may talk and do whatever until the lunch bell goes off. The timer starts now." (Everyone turned over their quiz papers and did their quizzes. Grayson looked over Barbara's shoulder and saw that she got every answer right, like she already knew the exact same quiz she had in high school. He was really impressed because they both got their answers right. When everyone was finished, they all started to talk. Barbara was looking at the window and thinking about her father. Grayson cleared his throat and began to speak.)

Grayson: "Hello, there. I'm Dick Grayson." (Barbara smiled and looked at him. She took her hand out towards him.)

Barbara: "Hey, I'm..."

Grayson: "The Commissioner's daughter. I know. I heard about you." (He shook her hand.)

Barbara: "You know everyone. They heard of me. It's kind of weird."

Dick: "No, it's kind of cool, actually. So, that way you don't have to introduce yourself every single time because they already know who you are just hearing it on the radio or on live television."

Barbara: "Huh. I never actually thought of it that way. That's really clever, Dick."

Dick: "Yeah. So, what do you do for fun?"

Barbara: "This may sound really stupid, but I watch cartoons and I read books and I go on the internet?"

Dick: "What? I watch cartoons, too. That's not stupid. Cartoons were like my childhood." (Barbara smiled at him.)

Barbara: "Exactly, they were my childhood, too."

Dick: "Wow, we should remind each other which cartoons appear on tv, so that way we can watch them together."

Barbara: "You mean like...exchanging phone numbers?"

Dick: "Perfect idea. Here, I call you and you call me back." (Barbara blushes.)

Barbara: "Oh, I don't know."

Dick: "Or you can text me and I'll text you back, Barbara. Come on, please?"

Barbara: "Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt if I do this." (She takes out a piece of paper and writes down her phone number.)

Dick: "There's the spirit." (Dick does the same thing and they swaped it together.)

Dick: "Sweet. Now, we can remind each other to watch cartoons together."

Barbara: "Yeah." (The lunch bell went off and the students left the classroom.)

Charlotte: "Bye, students. See you tomorrow!"

Dick: "Come sit next to me at lunch, Barbara."

Barbara: "Okay." (Dick hands her a tray to put her food on and she thought of something in her head while she was getting food on her plate.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "What is this that I'm feeling? Is it passion butterflies in my stomach? Am I feeling really close to Dick even though I just met him? What is happening in my life? It's like puzzle pieces except I'm the one that's struggling to put them all together. Don't lose your cool, Babs." (Dick pulls out a chair for Barbara to sit down.)

Barbara: "Thank you."

Dick: "You're welcome." (They spent hours talking about their lives and cartoons. Every time Dick smiles, Barbara's heart beats a little quicker each second until it was time to go. Barbara saw a band working on their first single by practicing.)

Woman: "One, two, three, four." (The drumsticks were hitting the drums intensely and the bass guitar was being plucked. Barbara's head begins to bop from side to side because it was a good rhythm to start with and one of the members saw Barbara.)

Drummer: "Hey, isn't that the Commissioner's daughter?" (The woman saw her as well.)

Woman: "Hold on a second." (She walked over to Barbara and Barbara noticed what happened to the music.)

Barbara: "What happened? The music was awesome."

Woman: "Hey, I admire you enjoying our little warm-ups. I'm Dinah Lance, the singer of the group."

Barbara: "You're a singer? Cool. I'm..."

Woman: "Commissioner's daughter. Heard about you from the Commissioner himself. I kind of easedropped on the conversation he had with the college faculty."

Barbara: "He told the faculty on campus?"

Dinah: "Yep and the entire school knows who you are. Crazy, right?"

Barbara: "Indeed."

Dinah: "Hey, if you're interested in listening to us play a song, here's a little demo we made in the studio. Our band's name is Ashes On Sunday." (She gave Barbara the CD in her hands.)

Barbara: "That is the most coolest, radical name I have ever heard in a rock band! I'll definitely listen to this!"

Dinah: "Thanks, it's nice to feel appreciated when someone loves the name. I came up with it myself. It became an idea, but later it's the real deal."

Barbara: "I feel you, Dinah. You're pretty awesome." (Dinah wrote her phone number down on Barbara's CD case.)

Dinah: "Feel free to text or call me if you want to see us perform at the fairgrounds. I'll give you the info soon. It starts in five weeks."

Barbara: "Wow, thanks, Dinah. I definitely call or text you."

Dinah: "Great. Bye, Barbara."

Barbara: "Goodbye." (She saw the bus and hurried to get on. The bus suddenly took off and she looked out the window and saw Wayne Manor far off. She was curious who lived there, but she didn't want to invade anyone's property. So, the bus took Barbara home and she got inside.)
