Chapter 12: Happy Birthday, Barbara!

(The next morning, Barbara woke up and started dancing because it was her birthday. She brushes her teeth and got dressed. She got to the kitchen and kissed her father's cheek. She sat down at the table while Jim brought her pancakes with bananas and honey drizzled at the top coming down to the bottom. Barbara smiled at Jim and he smiled back.)

Jim: "Happy Birthday, honey."

Barbara: "Thanks, dad." (She started to eat them.)

Jim: "By the way, Batgirl told me last night to tell you happy birthday." (Barbara looked up at Jim and tilted her head.)

Barbara: "She did?"

Jim: "Yep. She did excellent last night. I wish you could have seen her Barbara. She kind of looks a bit familiar, though." (He strokes his bushy mustache while he thinks. Barbara looks down and thought about it, too.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Maybe Batgirl have the look like I'm guessing me? Uh-oh, he doesn't need to know about me being Batgirl. I need to stay cool." (Jim couldn't think so he stopped because it was making his head hurt.)

Jim: "Ah, I can't think. All that blackout last night really got to my head."

Barbara: "There was a blackout?"

Jim: "Yes, there was, but don't worry about that, sweetheart. It's fine, now."

Barbara: "Oh. Okay."

Jim: "Anyway, I got you two birthday gifts." (He hands her a silver box wrapped in glitter paper and a silver bow. Barbara unwraps it and opens the box. Barbara gasped at the sight that was before her.)

Barbara: "Wow, it's a necklace."

Jim: "That has your birthstone, Babs." (Barbara puts it on and looks in the mirror. She grinned and Jim holds her shoulders.)

Jim: "Look at you. Just like your mother. Her reaction was the exact same as yours except a wedding ring was given to her and everytime I see your face light up, it reminds me of your mother." (Barbara looks at her necklace sparkles in the light and a tear went down on it because Barbara tried not to cry, but they came spilling out.)

Barbara: "Oh, dad. I love it so much." (She hugged Jim tightly and Jim kissed her red head.)

Jim: "I'm glad and I think you're ready for gift number two, but it's outside."

Barbara: "Okay, I'm ready." (Jim and Barbara went outside and saw that there was a car waiting on her.)

Barbara: "Get out. No way, is it?"

Jim: "Yep, it's a BMW. Perfect size for you."

Barbara: "It's like one of those old school Barbie cars that I used to play with when I was young, but also with my toy horse Brian!"

Jim: "Yep, now it's a dream come true. What do you think?"

Barbara: "I think I should drive to school."

Jim: "I don't know, Babs. You know people can steal your car."

Barbara: "Well, okay. I'll just take the bus and leave the car here."

Jim: "That's actually really smart, Babs."

Barbara: "Yeah, I know. I'm intelligent." (She grabs her bookbag and leaves the house.)

Jim: "Wait, Babs!"

Barbara: "Yeah, dad?"

Jim: "I got you a bonus gift. It's in the envelope." (He gave her blue envelope that has her name on it.)

Barbara: "Thanks and bye!"

Jim: "Be careful at school."

Barbara: "I will." (Barbara got on the bus and sat in her chair. Barbara's phone vibrated and she looked. It was Frankie texting her.)

Frankie: (Texted) "Heeey, happy birthday, girl!" (Barbara smiled and texted back.)

Barbara: (Texted) "Thanks, Frankie. Hey, may I ask? Where were you yesterday when I was trying to communicate with you?"

Frankie: (Texted) "Wait. Was it last night?"

Barbara: (Texted) "Yeah. Last night when I was in a burning building?"

Frankie: (Texted) "Oh, yeah. Now, I remember! 😆 I was getting your gifts for your birthday and if I forgot, then you would be upset."

Barbara: (Texted) "Oh. I still needed you to answer when I called you."

Frankie: (Texted) "My bad. 😯"

Barbara: (Texted) "It's fine."

Frankie: (Texted) "So, since it's your birthday and all, I got two items for Batgirl later and two gifts for you."

Barbara: (Texted) "So....you're saying four gifts for me?"

Frankie: (Texted) "Exactly! 😉 Come see me at my apartment within two hours."

Barbara: (Texted) "Two hours, huh?"

Frankie: (Texted) "I didn't stutter, did I? 😐"

Barbara: (Texted) "Fair enough.😂 Two hours, got it."

Frankie: (Texted) "Excellent. See you then."

Barbara: (Texted) "Right. See ya! ✌"

Frankie: (Texted) "Love you! 😄💖"

Barbara: (Texted) "Okay, okay. Love you too, Frankie!"

Frankie: (Texted) "That's the spirit! Bye!"

Barbara: (Texted) "Bye!" (She chuckled as she looked out the window and saw the school.)

Barbara: "Nice." (She got off the bus and heard whimpering noises.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "What's that sound?" (Barbara looked around and saw a man that has a box that says "puppies for sale." Barbara was curious to see the puppies, so she walked over to the man who was selling them.)

Barbara: "Excuse me, sir?"

Man: "Why, hello there, young lady. How are y...wait a minute. I know you!"

Barbara: "You do? How about that."

Man: "You're the Commissioner's daughter."

Barbara: "That's me, alright. What's your name?"

Man: "Davis. Johnny Davis."

Barbara: "Okay, Mr. Davis. What do we have here?"

Johnny: "We have little puppies for sale. Aren't they cute?" (The puppies look up to Barbara with their adorable eyes.)

Barbara: "Yeah, they're really cute."

Johnny: "Yeah, I've been trying to give away these guys for two weeks now, but nobody really want to purchase them. There are really some heartless, cruel people in this city. I rescued some of these little pups from bad people who abused them just for the fun of it."

Barbara: "Man, that's terrible."

Johnny: "Yeah, I know. They all considered me a friend, though because I fed them, I washed them. They're just a whole ball of fun."

Barbara: "You're a lifesaver for these pups."

Johnny: "Yeah." (Barbara saw a puppy that looked straight in her eyes the whole time.)

Barbara: "Hey, Mr. Davis?"

Johnny: "Yes, what is it?"

Barbara: "What about that pup? He seems to be really into me right now." (She points to the puppy that was staring at her.)

Johnny: "Oh, that little rascal? He's a German Shepherd, that one. He seems to like you."

Barbara: "He's so small." (She rubbed his head.)

Johnny: "Yep, he's the tiniest of the bunch. He's the most courageous and sweet pup. Aren't ya little fella?" (He chuckled and scratched him under his chin. The puppy's tail wagged and Barbara looked at the time.)

Barbara: "Oh, I better get going. Bye, wittle guy." (She softly chuckled.)

Johnny: "Yeah, well. If no one will get them sooner, they go back to the doggie pound."

Barbara: "Goodbye, Mr. Davis."

Johnny: "So long, kid." (Barbara was about to leave, until the puppy whimpered loud.)

Johnny: "Hey, hey, hey, little fella. What's the matter?" (The puppy kept whimpering about Barbara leaving. Barbara heard him and slowly turned back around.)

Barbara: "Wait, what happens if no one purchase them?"

Johnny: "Like I said, kid. They go back to the doggie pound where they have to wait till they find a home to live in. They feel really lonely with no one to hold. If only people would just have the guts to get these puppies." (Barbara looked at the puppy that was whimpering and tilting his head. She slowly begin to smile.)

Barbara: "I'll take him."

Johnny: "You will?"

Barbara: "Of course. I mean it is my birthday."

Johnny: "Well, happy birthday."

Barbara: "Thank you."

Johnny: "Since he is 25 cents, I'll let you have him for free."

Barbara: "Really? You would do that?"

Johnny: "Yes, I would because this puppy really cares about you."

Barbara: "Wow, thank you. "

Johnny: "Oh, you're most welcome. All you need to do is give him a name."

Barbara: "I'll think about it. Right now, my brain is fried."

Johnny: "I understand. That pup is now yours."

Barbara: "Great. Come here, boy. It's okay." (Barbara picks him up and cradles him like a baby.)

Barbara: "He is so light."

Johnny: "Yep, that pup barely eats. That's why he's not heavy like most pups."

Barbara: "I love it. You can stay with me." (The puppy looks at her and rubbed his face against hers.)

Barbara: "Aww." (She chuckled.)

Johnny: "He really likes you a lot."

Barbara: "I can tell. I got to go."

Johnny: "Okay, goodbye."

Barbara: "Bye." (She walked to the entrance and saw Dick.)

Barbara: "Hey, Dick."

Dick: "Hey, is that a puppy in your arms?"

Barbara: "It sure is. Isn't he cute?"

Dick: "Yeah, he sure is." (He was about to touch him, but he growled.)

Dick: "Wow, he's not happy to see me."

Barbara: "That's because he's courageous and he don't want anything bad to happen me."

Dick: "Well, I'm obviously not a bad guy, right?"

Barbara: "No, of course not. He just have to get used to you as all."

Dick: "Yeah, because right now he's used to you. When did you get him?"

Barbara: "Just now."

Dick: "Wow, no wonder he likes you." (Barbara paused and raised her eyesbrows.)

Barbara: "Dick, are you jealous that this dog cares about me than you do?"

Dick: "What? No!" (Barbara sternly looks at him.)

Barbara: "Oh, my god. You are jealous."

Dick: "Are not."

Barbara: "Are too."

Dick: "Are not!"

Barbara: "Are too!" (They were five feet away from each other.)

Dick: "Maybe I am a little jealous."

Barbara: "Ha! Even you admit it."

Dick: "But I still care about you, though." (He crossed his arms and pouted.)

Barbara: "Okay, whatever. So, how was last night?"

Dick: "It was fun. Way better when you were there. Oh, by the way happy birthday, Barbara. I couldn't get you anything. I'm sorry."

Barbara: "Hmm. Maybe it's not too late to give me something. How about...uh..." (She looked down to think, but once again her brain was fried. Dick figured out what she was talking about.)

Dick: "Oh." (Barbara puts the puppy down and the puppy looked at Dick and Barbara while sitting on the concrete. Dick slowly lifts her chin to look at him and he held her hands. He looked really serious as he leans towards her and Barbara closed her eyes as he got closer. They were so close until....Barbara's cellphone started to ring. Dick stopped in his tracks and Barbara looked at her phone about who's calling her and it was Dinah Lance who was calling her.)

Dick: "Are you going to answer that? She's a friend of yours."

Barbara: "I know. You're right. I should answer the call. It might be important."

Dick: "Well, then. I'll make an excuse for you to Ms. Charlotte and tell her that you were sick. I got your back."

Barbara: "Okay. Stay safe."

Dick: "Oh, I will." (He was about to leave, but he kissed her cheek.)

Dick: "See you later."

Barbara: "Okay."

Dick: "Later, puppy." (The puppy growled at him as he watched him head inside the school.)

Barbara: "Heel, pup. Heel." (She answered the phone.)

Barbara: "Hello?"

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "Babs, is that you?"

Barbara: "Yeah, it's me. What's going on?"

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "Are you busy or anything?"

Barbara: "No, nothing like that at all."

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "Okay, can you do me a favor? I need a friend."

Barbara: "Of course, Dinah. What's up?"

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "Can you please come over my house? I...I'm lonely with no one around."

Barbara: "I'll be there. Tell me your location."

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "My house is right next to Grant Park. Take the subway train and it will take you there."

Barbara: "Okay, I'll be there."

Dinah: (COM/Weary) "Good."

Barbara: "Dinah, are you okay?" (Suddenly, the phone hang up and she looked at her phone all concerned.)

Barbara: "Come on, boy. Let's go to Dinah's place." (Barbara picked the puppy up and she jogged downstairs to the subway and she took the train to Grant Park. When Barbara got off the train and headed upstairs out of the subway, she saw a beautiful house that she has never seen in a neighborhood of Gotham City.)

(Barbara was stunned at Dinah's house.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Wow, of all the plain houses in Gotham, Dinah's parents were pretty wealthy at the time just like Bruce, but they're probably gone and she's all alone by herself. Poor Dinah." (She walked towards the door and ringed the doorbell. She waited, but there was no one at the door. Then Barbara knocked on the door.)

Barbara: "Dinah? Dinah, it's me, Barbara." (She listened if she heard footsteps, but didn't.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Well, this is weird. Maybe I can find an alternative way to get inside." (She took a look around and saw her balcony that leads to her room.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Hmm. Perhaps the balcony?" (She smiled and grabbed out her grapple gun from out of her inside jacket pocket. She aimed it at a sturdy tree branch and was about to fire, but suddenly, someone was at the door unlocking it and Barbara quickly puts her weapon away.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Oh, man. I was hoping that I was going to use the grapple gun and here I go once again talking to myself in my head. I have to stop doing that!" (Barbara straightened up her jacket and waited for Dinah to finally open the door. Her hair was in a messy bun, but somehow her bangs were straight and nicer than the rest. She was also wearing pajamas.)

Dinah: "Hey, Barbara."

Barbara: "Wow, Dinah. How many locks does it take to open one door?"

Dinah: "Several...for extra security measure. Come on in."

Barbara: "Alright." (She walked into her home and her head was filled with thoughts.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Really, Barbara. She was supposed to laugh at that question? You are the worst friend that Dinah can have." (Barbara was stunned how amazing the inside of her house was.)

Barbara: "This is the most beautiful house I have ever seen in my life."

Dinah: "Why, thank you. My parents bought this house....no. My father built this house and my mother took care of it and made it look nice on the inside. It's what parents do." (Barbara was worried about Dinah as Dinah massaged her temples.)

Barbara: "Dinah, are you alright?"

Dinah: "Yeah, I'm fine. Anyway, would you like some frappe?"

Barbara: "Sure." (Dinah went to the kitchen and poured two cups of frappe.)

Dinah: "I'm sorry that I'm not properly dressed in a manner when I invite guests."

Barbara: "It's fine. I probably do the exact same thing when I invite guests. Even though, my dad tells me not to do that."

Dinah: "I hear you." (She puts strawberries and whipped cream on top. She dips a red and white straw in them and walked out the kitchen with them in her hands.)

Barbara: "Wow, it looks amazing!"

Dinah: "Wait till you taste it." (Barbara took a long sip of the strawberry and cream frappe.)

Barbara: "This is delicious!"

Dinah: "I'm glad you love it. Let's go upstairs to my room. I know you want to talk, so let's go."

Barbara: "Okay." (Dinah leads her upstairs to her bedroom.)

Dinah: "What do you think?"

Barbara: "Gothic."

Dinah: "Is that a bad thing?"

Barbara: "No, no. It's a wonderful thing." (She smiled, but in her mind was speaking to her.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Babs, you know you're lying about it, you just won't tell her. Be honest for goodness sake, girl!" (Dinah smiled back and fixes her pillows.)

Dinah: "Hm. I'm pleased to hear that. My parents always say that I have a unique style being gothic and all." (Barbara looked around the room.)

Barbara: "I can tell. You do have a unique style and I respect that."

Dinah: "Yeah, indeed. I'm going to take a shower and get dressed. Feel free to look around my room if you want. I'll be right back."

Barbara: "Okay. Sure."

Dinah: "It won't take long." (Dinah grabbed her clothing and headed out towards the bathroom. Barbara got up and looked around the room. She saw posters everywhere about different music groups and artists. She saw pictures of Dinah smiling brightly as a child. She sipped her frappe while thinking.)

Barbara: (Thoughts) "Dinah looks so happy when she was a kid." (She kept sipping until she saw a picture that caught her eyes. It was a picture of Dinah and her family. Then, Dinah came back in and saw Barbara looking at the picture.)

Dinah: "I'm back." (Barbara turned to face her and smiled.)

Barbara: "This is a really nice picture. Is this your family?"

Dinah: "Well, no. They're not my real parents. My real parents died when I was young."

Barbara: "Oh, I'm sorry." (Dinah sat on her bed and Barbara sat across from her.)

Dinah: "It's fine."

Barbara: "What happened to them?"

Dinah: "Do you really want to know?" (Barbara nodded her head in response.)

Dinah: "It's a pretty sad story."

Barbara: "Tell me anyway. I want to know."

Dinah: "Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you because it is hard to handle."

Barbara: "I can handle it."

Dinah: "Suit yourself. A very long time ago, I was about four years old traveling with my parents to go to Mount Everest. We had a wonderful time there camping and roasting marshmallows, but when we got back to Gotham City, things turned really grim. Crime was beginning to become rampant in the streets of Downtown. My parents and I were planning to get out as soon as we can, but the car broke down once we were going to leave for good." (The car suddenly stopped at the leaving Gotham sign.)

**Dinah's dad: "Oh, come on!"

**Dinah's mom: "What is it, honey?" (He tried restart the car with the key, but it wouldn't go.)

**Dinah's dad: "It won't start. We broke down. Damn it!" (He hits the steering wheel and Dinah thought about a solution.)

**Little Dinah: "How about we take the bus?"

**Dinah's mom: "That's not a terrible idea, darling. Maybe we should take the..."

**Dinah's dad: "No. Bad idea." (Dinah slowly sat back down in her seat.)

**Dinah's mom: "Oh? And why shouldn't we take the bus?"

**Dinah's dad: "It takes a long time for a bus to arrive to pick us up and there is a few bus stops that are pretty far from where we're at. So, do you really want to wait that long while crime is taking over Gotham?"

**Dinah's mom: "No."

**Dinah's dad: "Exactly. I'm going to fix the car, so we can get moving. No matter what happens don't open the doors, keep them locked."

**Little Dinah: "Dad." (He turned around and smiled at Dinah. He held her hands and he kissed them.)

**Dinah's dad: "I'll be fine, sweetie. Don't worry. Honey, lock the door."

**Dinah's mom: "Right." (She hits the switch to lock the doors. The dad opened the hood and smoke came out.)

**Dinah's dad: "Okay, let's see what we got here." (Suddenly, someone grabbed him by the jacket and slammed his head on the engine. He fell on the ground, rubbing his head.)

**Man: "Hello, there." (Dinah's eyes were devasted.)

**Little Dinah: "Dad!" (She unlocked the door and ran out towards her dad.)

**Dinah's mom: "Dinah, no!" (Dinah went to her dad and he puts his hand on her shoulders.)

**Dinah's dad: "Dinah, what did I tell you to do?!"

**Man: "Is that your daughter? How precious." (Dinah was a little scared that she clinged on to her dad.)

**Dinah's mom: "Don't you dare touch her! Leave them alone!"

**Man: "Ah, Carolyn Lance. I've been waiting for this moment ever since we first met."

**Carolyn: "Shove it, Chase. You know this is personal."

**Chase: "Aw, don't be like that. I wanted both of us to be together."

**Carolyn: "So, what? So, that way you could ruin our lives just like you did to our neighbors? You must be delusional."

**Chase: "Well, since you don't want to be a family, then I'll destroy them and then you're next." (Chase grabbed Dinah's arm tightly and dragged her.)

**Larry: "Hey, you let her go!" (Larry got kicked in the face.)

**Carolyn: "No!" (She inhaled and paused because she heard a gun cocked and it was pointed at Dinah's temple.)

**Chase: "Ah, ah, ah. You do it and your little girl gets her brains splattered." (Carolyn held back and stopped in her tracks.)

**Chase: "There we go. Now, all you have to say is that..." (Larry looked up and had a plan in his head. He noticed that Chase was standing underneath a telephone pole and he got Carolyn's attention. He showed her where to scream at and she realized if she aimed it with good precision, it would crush Chase. She nodded in confidence and stared back at Chase.)

**Chase: "So, Carol. What do you say? Should we start over from the beginning before all of this happens?" (He took his hand out and Carolyn looks at it.)

**Carolyn: "What about the rest? Can they come, too?" (Chase looked at Dinah and Larry and he rolled his eyes then he smiled.)

**Chase: "Sure, why not."

**Carolyn: "Well, Chase. To that I say..." (Chase had his high hopes and he raised his eyebrows up to make sure that the answer was positive.)

**Carolyn: "Hell no!" (Dinah stepped on his foot.)

**Chase: "Ow! You little brat!"

**Larry: "Now, Carol! Ultrasonic!" (Carolyn did the Canary Cry and soundwaves were going off, hurting Chase's ears. He took out his gun and aimed it at Dinah. Larry tackled him.)

**Larry: "NO!" (Suddenly, a loud bang was heard and Larry grunted as he looked at his waist. The wound was very deep and he collapsed on the ground in slow motion. Dinah was scared as Larry's mouth was starting to spill out red liquid. Carolyn was upset and filled with anger.)

**Carolyn: "NOOO!!" (Carolyn screamed from the top of her lungs and huge soundwaves were breaking the glass windows off the car and it made the alarm go off. Carolyn stopped and got on her knees crying. Chase was getting up and was walking towards her. He grabbed her neck and lifted her high.)

**Chase: "And here I thought we could've been a wonderful family and you haven't been a sweet and kind lady. So, you deserve the same fate and your disgusting and non-caring husband of yours."

**Carolyn: (Straining) "Chase, please. No..."

**Chase: "Aww, now you want me to be your friend. Well, too bad. You'll get what you deserve a long time ago." (He slammed her back against the car several times until her spine snapped and he dropped her on the ground. Dinah backed up against the car in fear as she saw her mother's face, eyes open and mouth slightly open. She saw Chase coming towards her.)

**Chase: "Just a fair warning, kid. Your parents were mean and selfish to mine. Now, it's time that you will be punished." (He aimed the gun at her.)

**Little Dinah: "I don't care."

**Chase: "Ah, so you're like a little rebel, huh?"

**Little Dinah: "Yeah, you don't scare me."

**Chase: "I appreciate your bravery, but you can't outwit a bullet, kid. Your father learned that the hard way. So, I better make this quick." (He aimed the gun at her waist and was about to shoot until sirens went off.)

**Chase: "Aw, crap." (He started to run, but the cops got him.)

**Jim: "And where do you think you're going, Chase?" (He saw what he did and Dinah already ran away from the scene.)

**Jim: "Ooh, buddy. You are in serious trouble. Book him, men! He's going away for a long, long time." (The cops handcuffed him and pushed him to the cop cars.)

**Chase: "Just you wait, officers. I'll get out and when I do, I'll finish the job!"

**Renee: "Yeah, yeah. Like we haven't heard that one before. Now, get in the damn car before I shove you in the trunk." (The cops pushed him into the backseat of the car and slammed the door. Renee stood next to Jim and shook her head.)

**Renee: "Wow, this is really bad."

**Jim: "Jesus, what a mess."

**Renee: "Hey, the officers told me on the radio that a little child ran away from the scene and that these people are her parents, Carolyn and Larry Lance. The kid's name is Dinah Drake Lance and she's about four years old."

**Jim: "And she saw all of this happened?"

**Renee: "Yes, sir. That's exactly what they told me on the radio."

**Jim: "Damn. No four year old should have to witness this kind of disaster. Poor kid. I hope we get to find her."

**Renee: "She'll be back soon, Jim. Just let her go for now."

**Jim: "You're right. I just hope my baby daughter won't run away like that when she gets a little older."

**Renee: "I get it, Jim. I get it." (She patted his shoulder.)

**Renee: "Come on, let's go back to GCPD. The rest of the officers got this handled."

**Jim: "Okay." (They got in their car and went to their headquarters.)

Barbara: "You ran away?"

Dinah: "Yes, I ran away. What would you do if you were in that same situation?" (Barbara shrugged her shoulders.)

Dinah: "Exactly. I ran and kept running until I was out of breath. I ended up in the forest and leaned up against a tree. I was so furious and filled with sadness in my heart like it has been shattered like glass. You want to know how I let my anger out? I cried and I screamed and kept screaming and screaming and screaming. Until..." (Dinah screamed the last time and it echoed as soundwaves knocked down the leaves of every tree in the forest. She was surprised as she rubbed her throat.)

Dinah: "...I had extraordinary powers and I felt superior with them, yet I didn't have any training. So, since I didn't have a family, I went back to the city to find food because I was hungry. I was a rebel, so I went dumpster diving."

Barbara: "Gross."

Dinah: "Hey, don't hate. Like I said, I have a unique kind of style being myself."

Barbara: "I know, but still."

Dinah: "Can I finish, please?"

Barbara: "Yes, you may."

Dinah: "Thank you. Now, where was I? Oh, yeah. I remember I was dumpster diving."

**Little Dinah: "Come on, come on. There has to be food somewhere in here." (She was tossing out empty aluminum cans and empty plastic bottles until someome approaches her.)

**Man: "Now, what is a young girl like yourself doing here in an alleyway going through a dumpster?" (Dinah gasped and saw the guy that was next to a dumpster.)

**Little Dinah: "I don't know. What is a guy like you doing here in an alleyway stalking on little girls? Weirdo."

**Man: "Whoa, whoa, whoa, kid. Take it easy. No need to start a fight here."

**Little Dinah: "Then there's no reason to start a conversation here, now is there?" (The man puts a hand on his heart.)

**Man: "Wow, already a stone cold young girl, huh? Most girls are sometimes afraid of big, tall guys."

**Little Dinah: "Well, dude. Uh...you don't scare me." (She pretended to smile at him and then looked away from him.)

**Man: "You know if you are hungry, I could grab you a bite to eat and uh..."

**Little Dinah: "I don't trust you. I just met you. Is that a reasonable statement for you?"

**Man: "Yeah, it is and I don't doubt it, but I'm trying to help. I know what you're going through."

**Little Dinah: "I don't know what you're talking about because right now, you're giving me a damn headache." (She kept looking in the dumpster.)

**Man: "I'm sure you do know what I am talking about. Those people that died by that man." (Dinah stopped and looked down.)

**Man: "They were your parents. Weren't they?"

**Little Dinah: "Yeah, they were and now I have no one."

**Man: "That's true, but maybe it's not."

**Little Dinah: "How?"

**Man: "Well, I have a school that's not that far from here. I can take you there, give you a warm bed at night, good, hot food and plenty more. I could train you how to defend yourself. If only you would come with me. You don't have to if don't want to. It's your decision. I know you want revenge. I can see that, but you don't need to kill him for that. Instead, why not bring him to justice, but that's for you to decide his fate. So...what do you say?" (Dinah closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She dropped the cans in the dumpster and looked up to him.)

**Little Dinah: "I'll come with you as long as there are good and hot food you say." (She smiled at him and the man smiled back while he chuckled.)

**Man: "There is. Thank you for accepting this. I'm Sensei Desmond Lamar." (He held out his hand in front of her and she shook it in return.)

**Little Dinah: "Dinah Drake Lance."

**Desmond: "Come on, let's go to my wonderful school. You're going to love it there." (He wrapped his arm around her shoulder like he's carrying her under his wing while walking out of the alleyway.)

Barbara: "Sounds like he was a really good teacher." (Barbara was finishing her Frappe and Dinah chuckled as she nodded.)

Dinah: "Yeah, he was a good teacher. He fed me, he took care of me and he cared for me like I was his very own child and like he was my dad. He taught me all kinds of martial arts and skills. He and I brawl each other every Saturday and I always win everytime or maybe he was letting me win. I've been there ever since I was a teenager. I was fourteen years old and I was still kicking Sensei's old a**." (She chuckled and smiled as teenage Dinah sweeped Sensei down with her sweep kick.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Hai!" (She stood in a gracious stance as Sensei Desmond nodded his head as he was impressed.)

**Sensei Desmond: "Spectacular movements, Dinah. I'm impressed."

**Teenage Dinah: "Well, yeah because you're getting old, Sensei." (She pulled him up and laughed.)

**Sensei Desmond: "Hey, who are you calling old, you little rascal?" (He messed with her hair as she fixed it.)

**Teenage Dinah: "What? It's true."

**Sensei Desmond: "Okay, Dinah." (He grunted as he was rubbing his head. Dinah looked at him, concerning what was the problem.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Sensei, are you okay?"

**Sensei Desmond: "Yeah. Yeah. Don't worry. I'll be fine. Why don't you go get some rest, Dinah? It's getting rather late."

**Teenage Dinah: "I should be telling you that, Sensei."

**Sensei Desmond: "Uh-huh, so you weren't kidding about saying that I'm old." (Dinah rubbed at the back of her head nervously laughing.)

**Teenage Dinah: "My bad."

**Sensei Desmond: "It's fine, sweetie. I am getting old and one day...I might be gone."

**Teenage Dinah: "You shouldn't say things like tha...wait. Did you just called me sweetie?" (Sensei Desmond slowly walked to his room with his cane.)

**Sensei Desmond: "Good night, Dinah." (Dinah thought about what he said and she went into her own room and went to sleep.)

Dinah: "When I heard that Chase escaped from prison, I knew I had to get him for what he has done."

Barbara: "Let me guess, you got out of school at night, didn't you?"

Dinah: "Yes, I did get out of school at night when I should've been sleeping, but he had to be stopped. I couldn't let what happened slide easily out on the streets. I had to teach him a lesson, whether it was that or forget it just like it's a brand new day. Not me, Barbara. That's not me at all." (Dinah opened her eyes, got dressed and stealthily climbed out the window. She saw a shadow pass by the dojo and she chased after it. It was running towards the leaving Gotham sign and she inhaled and did a quick scream that made it stop in its tracks.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Going somewhere, Chase?"

**Chase: "Who the hell are you?"

**Teenage Dinah: "You don't remember me at all, huh? Well, maybe that will help you remember! That exact same spot as my parents died!" (She points at the residue where her parents were lying down. Chase saw and realized who she was.)

**Chase: "No...you were that little girl I saw ten years ago!"

**Teenage Dinah: "That's right. You killed my parents in cold blood and now I'm empty with no parents!" (Chase was about to pull out his gun and Dinah disarmed him by breaking his arm.)

**Chase: "Ahhh!" (Chase's arm was broken and dislocated and every time he moves it, it gets sore by the second. Dinah kicked him in the stomach.)

**Teenage Dinah: "You shot my dad in the waist!" (She kicked him again in the chest hard.)

**Teenage Dinah: "You snapped my mom's spine!" (Chase started coughing up blood. Dinah grabbed him by the collar and looked him in the eyes.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Now, you really p***** me off!" (She was about to punch him so hard in the face, but she thought about what her Sensei said.)

**Sensei Desmond: "I know you want revenge. I can see that, but you don't need to kill him for that. Instead, why not bring him to justice, but that's for you to decide his fate." (Inside her head, it echoes fate constantly on a loop and she looked in his eyes as fear trembled before him. She noticed that bringing him to justice isn't a bad option, then again revenge sounds so much better, but she chose her decision. She shook her head and puts her fist down.)

**Teenage Dinah: "I can't do it. I won't kill you. Both of my parents didn't raise me to be a murderer and they sure as hell didn't raise me to become dirty scumbags like you. You disgust me and for that, you will face real justice in court." (Chase laughed at her as she put him down on the ground.)

**Chase: "I knew you couldn't do it, because you're nothing, but a sad, childish little brat and a coward!" (He kept laughing and Dinah punched him to knock him out.)

**Teenage Dinah: "That'll shut you the hell up." (With that, she walked away from Chase.)

Barbara: "So, you got what you wanted, right? Justice?"

Dinah: "That's right and Chase was never leaving prison after what he did to my parents."

Barbara: "Hmm. Where is he now?"

Dinah: "Dunno. Probably dead."

Barbara: "Yikes. I'm into your story so far and it didn't make me cry. Yet."

Dinah: "Yeah? Well, be prepared to grab tissues because this will legit make you cry."

Barbara: "Alright. Start it off."

Dinah: "Okay, you asked for it. So, right after I got Chase and I arrived back at the school the next morning, I was looking for Sensei. I called out for him."

**Teenage Dinah: "Sensei, I did what you asked! I faced my opponent and I didn't get revenge! I got on the right path towards justice and I'm proud of myself! Sensei. I know you're not sleeping on me again. This was the fifteenth time you have done that." (She listened for a response, but there was no answer. She looked on the counter and saw a letter. She picked it up and she opened it and read it.)

**Teenage Dinah: "My wonderful rascal, if you are reading this..."

**Sensei Desmond: "Then I must be dead. I enjoyed our time together, training, eating and having fun, but now it is time for me to move on. I am happy and in a better place. I wish I could've seen you one last time, Dinah because if I did, I would've called you my daughter because I...I love you, Dinah and I would hold you like you were my only child. My situation was a problem. Remember my head was throbbing last night? I don't want this to startle you, but I have brain cancer and I should've told you, but I was afraid that you would leave me forever. I'm so sorry if I told you this sooner, but you needed to know this. I'll always be here with you in my heart and soul. Thank you for being with me, Dinah and have a wonderful life. Your loving Sensei." (She puts the letter down and laughed.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Okay, nice try, Sensei, but if this is a prank, it's not funny! You've done this to me like six times already. I believe I seen this a hundred times and it's not going to work this time!" (She looked his room and saw Sensei Desmond sitting in a chair with his head down and he was slightly grey like the color of his skin sort of faded in a way.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Sensei, I know you're faking that you're dead. Wake up, you old bones! Smell the breeze and feel the sunshine! I know. I know. I have been gone for a while, but that's to prove that I'm back and I'm happy to see you. Now, wake up!" (She crouched and looked at him. She moved his hand and it flopped over the chair.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Hey, Sensei. Are you sick or something because in that letter you have brain cancer and you..." (She realized that's what happened to him.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Hey. Wake up! Sensei, wake up!" (She was shaking him and she felt his pulse and nothing was working. She gasped in terror and leaned against his bed.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Oh, my god! No." (She was tearing up and hugged Sensei. She was sobbing and leaned her head against him.)

**Teenage Dinah: (Sobbing) "Sensei...I love you, too." (She kept crying on him and Barbara was tearing up.)

Dinah: "It tore me apart for so long."

Barbara: (Sniffled) "Wow. That was sad." (She wiped her tears away.)

Dinah: "Yeah, he's still in my heart after all these years. Anyway, I went to his funeral and moved on to the streets once again. There were two people who found me in the park still mourning about my Sensei in the rain."

**Man #1: "Hey, look over there."

**Woman #1: "Oh, my. It's an orphan. We should go get her and bring her back with us." (Dinah was still sitting on the bench sad and lonely. She looked up and saw the people that approached her.)

**Woman #1: "Excuse me, but are you alone?"

**Teenage Dinah: "Yes, I am. I'm cold and I have nowhere to go."

**Woman #1: "Well, I'm Ms. Brown and this is my assistant Mr. David."

**David: "Hello, there."

**Teenage Dinah: "Hello, I'm Dinah Drake Lance."

**Brown: "It's very nice to meet you. We have an orphanage that's not too far from here and we have plenty of orphans that are about your age and some are younger, but nothing to worry about that. It's a really safe place and I think that you'll like it there. We serve meals everyday and you get to play outside all of those types of activities. Do you want to participate?"

**Teenage Dinah: "Sure. Anything to get out of this soggy, wet and cold weather."

**David: "Nice. I love this kid."

**Brown: "Come along." (Dinah got under their umbrella to keep dry.)

Dinah: "They were really nice people and they took me in to their orphanage and I met some great friends and had a pleasant time, but there were things that weren't so pleasant. There was a drunk dude in the upstairs bedroom who just loves to boss and abuse kids for no reason at all. Drunken bums are really stupid when you see their true faces and personalities."

**Drunken Man: "Alright, you little s****! Time to go to sleep! Anyone who...*burp*...stays up after ten will get the slap and anyone who hates me will get the slap. Understand?" (The kids stayed quiet and didn't say anything to the drunken man.)

**Drunken Man: "Anyone who doesn't respond will also get the slap."

**Kids: "Yes, Mr. Frank."

**Drunken Man: "Good, now I hate all of you and I'm going to get me another beer. Nightly *hiccups* night." (A little girl approached him and tugged his shirt two times. Frank turned around and looked everywhere.)

**Frank: "What?! Who did that?"

**Little Girl: "I did." (Frank looked down and saw the little girl, but as a blurry image. He frowned.)

**Frank: "What do you want?!" (She rubbed her eyes and yawned.)

**Little Girl: "I'm getting nightmares and I'm getting thirsty. May I please get some water?"

**Frank: "No! You cannot get any water!" (The little girl was about to cry.)

**Little Girl: "But...But...I'm thirsty."

**Frank: "Well, that's too bad because I say you can't get any water because we are all out of water! Now, scram!" (He pushed her hard into the end of the bed and she fell on the floor crying. Dinah was upset when she saw that.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Hey! Why did you push her?"

**Frank: "Oh, shut the hell up!" (He slapped her and the other girls pushed him out and locked the door on him. He banged on the door.)

**Frank: (Muffled) "Hey, you little roaches! Open this door, right now! I'm not finished yet!" (He kept banging on the door and then he stopped because he was tired.)

**Frank: (Muffled) "Fine! Stay in there for all I care! I'll be back tomorrow!" (When he was walking, it sounded like stomps like he was a giant. Then, they faded away and the girls sighed with relief.)

**Girl #3: "I think he's gone now."

**Boy #2: "Man, that guy is a d***."

**Boy #4: "Exactly. I hope I'll get adopted soon because I can't stand to be here anymore."

**Kids: "Yeah."

**Girl #2: "We better get to sleep though before we get in more trouble." (The kids went to their beds and Dinah went to check on the little girl.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Hey, are you okay?"

**Little Girl: "I'm thirsty."

**Teenage Dinah: "Don't worry. I'll get you something to drink. I'm going out there."

**Girl #4: "Are you crazy?" (Dinah shrugged her shoulders.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Probably."

**Boy #3: "But you have to ask Ms. Brown and Mr. David for permission and they're all the way down to the first floor. We're on the sixth floor. You'll never make it."

**Teenage Dinah: "Sure I will. I'm fast and quick on my feet. I'll be back."

**Girl #6: "But Mr. Frank will..."

**Teenage Dinah: "Not be able to catch me. Guys, I've learned eight types of martial arts and I'm going against a dumb, drunken lard, sweaty stinky bum. I think I'll be just fine. Wait here." (She closed the door and quickly scanned the area while her eyes while no one was in sight.)

**Teenage Dinah: "Alright, Dinah. Proceed light and quick on your feet. Just like Sensei taught me." (She ran very quickly like a shadow that can't be seen.)

Dinah: "Of course, the kids didn't believe that I was that fast, but man, did I proved them wrong." (Barbara was rubbing the puppy's head and smiled.)

**Girl #3: "She's never going to come back."

**Boy #4: "Yeah, she's probably caught by now."

**Teenage Dinah: "Ahem." (The kids looked and they were surprised at the fact that she came back.)

**Boy #4: "Holy crap."

**Girl #5: "How did you do that?"

**Teenage Dinah: "I learned by a teacher."

**Boy #3: "That's one bada** teacher."

**Little Girl: "My water." (She ran to go get it and hugged Dinah.)

**Little Girl: "Thanks."

**Teenage Dinah: "Don't mention it. Now, how about a story to help you go to sleep?"

**Little Girl: "Sure." (Dinah told her a story and everyone was intrigued by it.)

Barbara: "This is really good."

Dinah: "So far. Is that your puppy?"

Barbara: "Yes, it is. I don't know what to call him yet."

Dinah: "Hmm. Shadow?"

Barbara: "Tempting, but I don't think he likes that name."

Dinah: "That's too bad because that is all the names that I can come up with. Sorry."

Barbara: "It's alright." (Barbara's phone vibrated.)

Barbara: "Just a second." (She checks her text messages and saw Frankie just texted.)

Frankie: (Texted) "Barbara, I'm still waiting and you no show! WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU, GIRL?! 😠" (Barbara was a little disappointed at that text.)

Barbara: (Texted) "So sorry I got held up. 😟 Besides Dinah needed to see me."

Frankie: (Texted) "Oh, okay, but still it's been FIVE HOURS straight! 😡" (Barbara's eyes were wide as in shocked.)

Barbara: (Texted) "FIVE HOURS?! 😰😓😲😣" (Barbara looked at her phone clock and it was 5:30 in the afternoon.)

Barbara: (Texted) "It's five thirty!"

Frankie: (Texted) "Uh, yeah. SO, GET YOUR LATE BEHIND OVER HERE! PRONTO! 😬" (Barbara exited out of her messages and spoke to Dinah.)

Barbara: "Dinah, I'm sorry. I would love to hear more of your story, but I gotta run. Frankie needs me for something important and I was supposed to be there like 2 hours ago. Now, she's upset. Yeesh."

Dinah: "It's alright. You be careful, Babs."

Barbara: "Thanks. Bye, Dinah."

Dinah: "See you later. Bye, puppy." (The puppy licked her finger and Barbara grabbed him and carried him. Dinah locked the front door and sighed at what happened to her and the band. Barbara got back to the subway station and rode the train back to Burnside.)
