Chapter 2: Tag, You're It
"Hey!"
Dune and Insight paused their wrestling match, with Dune on top of Insight, Insight biting Dune's arm, and Dune tugging Insight's hair.
Umbra, Void, Insight, and Dune tensed, recognizing the voice. The world's greatest detective, the Dark Knight, the man whose stare can melt stone. The Batman.
And he did not look happy.
Batman had been on their tails ever since each of them had started vigilante stuff. First, he was after the twins, then Dune, then Insight. So, in other words, he's been chasing them for about 3 years.
"What do we do?" Void whispered to Umbra. "Fade and let those two deal with him," Umbra shrugged, fading into the shadows. Void eyed Batman sheepishly before fading with his brother. "You cowards!" Dune yelled.
"I'd probably do the same thing if I didn't know Batman," said a male, who dropped beside Batman. He wore a black suit with a bright blue bird on his chest. Nightwing.
"Ugh, what do you want?" Dune scoffed, secretly intimidated. Insight sensed their emotions and observed their actions.
Dune was annoyed and afraid, crossing her arms to look tough. Nightwing was calm and laidback, but his hands lingered near his escrima sticks.
Batman... well... was Batman.
"You already know the answer to that question," Batman replied. "You kids shouldn't be doing this stuff, it's dangerous."
"Wasn't the first Robin like... six when he started doing this? What about the current Robin, how old is he?" Insight questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"I was eight!" Nightwing muttered under his breath.
"Also, why do all the Robins wear brightly colored clothing that isn't well protected while you wear bullet proof dark colored stuff?" Dune asked, smirking. She didn't like Insight one bit, but she did make excellent points.
"They do have a point," Nightwing shrugged.
Batman rolled his eyes. "That's not the point. None of the Robins were heroes before they were ready. You can't just throw on a mask and punch bad guys."
"Yeah, yeah, blah blah blah," Dune scoffed. "I'm not stopping, by the way."
Insight shrugged. "I've been taking martial arts since I could walk, so..."
Batman sighed, taking a few steps towards them. "I'm going to have to ask you to come with me."
"Stranger Danger!" Dune yelled, shoving Insight towards Batman and Nightwing before taking off. "Tag, you're it!"
Insight's eyes widened in surprise, but she caught herself and slipped between the two before they could catch her. "That's fowl play!" she yelled, running after Dune.
Insight saw the older heroes chasing them in her peripheral vision. She quickly caught up to Dune before tripping her. "Tag!"
Dune shrieked as she suddenly lost balance, quickly regaining it. "You little-!"
"Guardian, I believe fighting won't solve anything," the stone said. "Ugh, for the last time, you don't have to call me that!" Dune groaned, her eyes glowing red. "Sandstorm," she whispered, her voice echoing into the wind as a small sandstorm formed around Nightwing and Batman.
That should buy her a lot of time.
--
"Nick?" Noah asked from the bottom bunk. "Yeah?" Nick replied. "I feel kinda bad about leaving Insight and Dune there... what if Batman sends them to jail? What if their families never see them again?"
"Little bro, you worry too much," Nick chuckled. "Go to sleep."
Noah didn't say anything else. Maybe he was a bit paranoid sometimes.
--
Insight climbed through her bedroom window, careful to not wake anyone. She pulled off her domino mask with a sigh. Brielle quickly changed into her pajamas, crawling into bed after laying out her school uniform for tomorrow.
--
Sydney sat on her bed, staring at the Dune stone. "What was your previous guardian like?" Sydney wondered out loud. "He was a nice person. Unfortunately, he died of old age a few months ago, as you already know-"
"Yeah, yeah, and I found you at that yard sale," Sydney finished. "Who made the Dune stone?"
"That is a story for later. I suggest you go to sleep," the stone replied.
Sydney sighed with an eyeroll, setting the necklace in her drawer before turning off the light.
--
"Damnit," Batman growled as the sandstorm faded, leaving Dune and Insight nowhere to be seen.
"You gotta admit, those four are pretty good," Nightwing said, brushing the sand out of his black hair.
"Umbra and Void rely too much on their powers, Insight doesn't rely on her powers enough, and Dune- Dune is just arrogant," Batman pointed out.
"Why don't you train them instead of forcing them to stop?" Nightwing questions, raising an eyebrow.
"And how do you suggest I do that?"
"You're the world's greatest detective, genius," Nightwing chuckled. "Find them and talk to them like a normal person."
--
Nick and Noah, heroes by night, sophomores by day. The two entered Gotham Academy, ignoring any girl who giggled or blushed at them.
"God, I hate being attractive," Noah grumbled, opening his locker and pulling out some books.
"I say own it and break hearts," Nick smirked at his little brother.
"Easy for you to say," Noah rolled his eyes. The two headed towards their first period, English, passing Brielle on the way.
Nick and Noah sat in the middle of the classroom, scrambling to finish the last of their homework before Hallie, the teacher's pet, could snitch.
Noah finished first, setting down his pencil to wait for Nick. "Hey, Noah," a girl said, coming up to their table.
The girl in question, was Natalie Miller. She had long light brown hair that reached her waist, hazel eyes that you could get lost in, and fair skin with a few freckles here and there. A petite girl with daddy's money. She wasn't bratty, she was actually quite sweet, but she was spoiled.
"Hey," Noah said, his voice cracking. He was silently praying for Nick to hurry up. He may or may not have a huge crush on Natalie.
"How was your weekend?" Natalie asked, oblivious to Noah's discomfort. "Good," Noah squeaked. "You?"
"It was alright, I guess. Dad had another business meeting with Wayne Enterprises. It was pretty boring," Natale said. "That's nice," Noah smiled awkwardly, thanking God that Mr. Vance walked in.
Mr. Vance looked like he hadn't slept in over 24 hours. His eyes were red, he had dark circles underneath and just looked miserable. "Free period, do what you want. Don't kill each other."
"Yeesh, what happened to him?" Nick whispered to Noah after finishing his homework.
--
Brielle, a freshman, headed to her German class. Lucky her, German is her first language.
She entered the classroom, sitting at the back by a few people in her friend group. Brielle wasn't popular, but she was liked among the students and nobody bullied her, so it felt like a win.
"Hey Brielle," Lennon smiled upon seeing her friend. "Hey girl!" Delilah patted the seat next to her, motioning for her to sit. Evan, Jake, and Paxton waved a hello.
"Did you hear about Mr. Vance?" Jake asked. "Yeah, Eva, Iliana, and Alex went missing the other day!" Lennon exclaimed, concerned. "I heard Mr. Vance hasn't slept at all since they went missing," Evan said.
"Guten Morgen, Klasse," Frau Schimdt said, entering the classroom. "Guten Morgen, Frau Schimdt," the whole class spoke in unison. "Today, we will be learning how to introduce ourselves," Frau Schimdt announced.
"Who read ahead in their book and can tell me how to properly introduce yourself?"
Brielle raised her hand. "Hallo, ich bin Brielle, oder ich heiße Brielle. Und du?"
"Sehr gut, Brielle, danke!" Frau Schimdt smiled.
"Show off," Delilah teased Brielle.
"Miss Hilmore, since you're so eager to talk, why don't you give your German culture presentation first? I believe you studied Berlin?" Frau Schimdt asked, motioning for Delilah to come to the front.
"Teacher's pet," she smirked at Brielle.
--
"Hey!" Sydney yelled as some kid bumped into her. He had dark hair and fierce green eyes. "Why don't you watch where you're going, Turner?" He growled.
"Shut up, you weirdo," Sydney scoffed. "Tch, cake face," the boy shot back with an annoyed- almost bored eyeroll.
"You're so full of shit that the toilet's jealous," Sydney snapped. "I bet your mother got a fine for littering when she dropped you off," the boy responded.
"Asshole."
"Brat."
"Someday you're gonna go far. I hope you stay there."
"You're more disappointing than an unsalted pretzel."
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
"I'd explain it to you, but I don't feel like using crayons."
"Shut up!"
Sydney stormed away with her friends, Maddie, Parker, Harper, and Jasmine.
"Ugh, I can't believe that kid just-- Ugh! Insulted me like that!" Sydney exclaimed. "I heard he threatened to kill Kyle Zimmers," Parker said. "Why?" Maddie asked. "Don't know," Parker shrugged.
"Who is that kid anyways?" Jasmine asked. "Damian Wayne, I think," Harper recalled.
"Who taught him manners, a troll?" Sydney scoffed.
