-Small Talk-

Warning: Insulting Dick with a really bad nickname. Minor swearing.

This one is simple enough.

Before we begin, what's your favourite book? Mine's The Little Prince.

Also, hope you'll enjoy!

Barbara Gordon was a regular customer at your small café. She always comes around from five to six pm, a few books in hand, and quite the coffee appetite. You knew her name, she knows your name, but her interaction with you was simply between customer and employees, maybe acquaintances, but never more, never less.

Yet... You've found yourself falling for her.

You knew she's disabled from her unfortunate encounter with the joker. You knew that her life was dangerous. You were very well aware of the state she was put into, given that she is the daughter of Gotham's favourite commissioner.

But you couldn't help it.

You knew that you were head over heels for her.

This feeling dawned you all of the sudden.

She was beautiful, you can't dismissed that. But that wasn't the thing that started all of this. In fact, you've never noticed how beautiful she was until a few days ago. Maybe it was because you were used to her visits, maybe it was because you were always the one who served her, and maybe it was just your late hormones suddenly kicking in.

Just as you were brushing her off of your thoughts, the sound of the entrance bell echoed throughout the room. Your ears perked up and you turned your head, finding Barbara herself, along with a teenage girl and a man.

"Barbara! Cass, Dick," you greeted, waving slightly at them as they walked over to you. Internally, you patted yourself in the back for remembering the others names.

Dick grinned at you, "(y/n), good to see you're on your shift today. We were wondering where you went yesterday." He wiggled his eyebrows at the two girls.

You shrugged "I had to attend my cousin's wedding. So Gary took over. I couldn't pass the chance for getting free food." You paused for a moment, smirking. "Never knew you guys missed me."

"Pfffft, as if." Dick rolled his eyes in a joking manner. "So..."

"One black coffee, one Cappuccino, and one caramel latte?" You asked, already scribbling the orders.

"Uh, yeah... Right." Dick huffed, reminding himself that you've already knew all of their favourites.

You shook your head and smiled at the girls, your eyes made contact with the teenager, "Do you want some glazed doughnuts Cass? We just made a batch."

Cass nodded her head, muttering a small "Yes, please."

You nodded, "How about you Barbara? There's still some croissants. A bit cold, but I could reheat it if you want,"

"Sure." She answered shortly, shrugging at you.

"Well, that'll be.... Twelve dollars and twenty five cents."

The three sat down and started to converse, laughing every once in a while. You smiled as you made their orders, finding ease in the routine. Giving the latte a few pumps of foamy cream, you dribbled caramel as well, making simple circles and stopping in the middle.

You propped their orders into the tray and went to fetch the croissant. After putting everything together, you quickly went to the trio and set each of their orders accordingly.

"Enjoy!" You quipped and smiled at them, your eyes gazing Barbara a second longer.

That's when you realised something, "Oh shoot! Is that (f/b)???" You exclaimed, almost screaming.

Cass winced slightly at how loud you were being while Dick just chuckled. Barbara nodded her head, "I've heard great reviews about it. And you seemed to be engrossed with it a few weeks ago. So yeah."

You grinned, "It's not great, it's amazing! Barbara, you need to finish it soon-wait. Not too soon. Oh, that ending... You won't believe- oh. Uhm. Uh. That'll be spoiling everything... Damn... Sorry. I'm rambling."

By now, your face was beet red, eyes wide with excitement. "I can't contain it when it comes to (f/b) okay... Again, sorry."

She gave out a heartfelt laugh before smiling at you, "I'm still on chapter seven, I haven't had the time to actually read it. It's not much, but I get why you fancy this book."

If your face wasn't already red, it would be by now. "Uh-That's... Good-no. Great! Because if you need to ramble about the ending, I'll be uh- waiting?" You stated though it came out more as a question.

"Sure, but just so you know. It'll be more of a debate than a ramble."

You smirked, "Come at me. I could handle it."

"Really?"

"Don't underestimate the power of impulsive reading for months. I've read it more that I could remember, and that's a lot."

She rolled her eyes and returned your smirk, "You'll be surprised then."

It was almost six pm, which means Barbara and her friends would leave soon. After that small talk with Barbara, you found yourself biting back a grin. So much for making it subtle...

Customers had increased, seeing the café is now almost full. The smell of various coffee filled your lungs as you served a few more customers. Usually, there would be others, as in waitress and another barista. But today, they all had plans and took on the late shift. Leaving you alone to deal with rush hours and such.

It wasn't bad, you could handle it. After all, you were the one who made this café and worked your arse off for the first few months. You took a deep breath and let go, putting some money to the cashier.

Glancing at the trio, more specifically at Barbara, you noticed they were leaving. Barbara had closed her books, Cass was looking relaxed, and Dick was energised and already standing. Soon enough, they passed your way.

"Bye (y/n)!" Dick waved his hands, walking beside Cass as nodded your way and muttered a small "The coffee was nice."

"Bye Dickhead! And thanks Cass," you waved back, nodding in acknowledgment.

They were at the door now, almost out.

Just as you were about to went back to work, you caught something in the corner of your eyes, Barbara. She was giving you a small smile and mouthed 'I'll be discussing the ending tomorrow'

At that, you felt your face warming up. And like an idiot you are, you grinned at her and breathed, "can't wait."

I know, it's not long. Like a 1000ish. But I've just made a longarse chap that was like 4500words and it was frustrating. So bear with me.

If you have request, don't be afraid to message me! I'll be glad to take it.

Batma-girl...
