Everything Has Changed

      Savannah sat in the pediatrician's office with her best friend Emma two weeks later and she still had not talked to Nat since she told him she was pregnant. Savannah shifted in her seat uneasily as she waited impatiently for a nurse to announce that it was finally her turn. "Hey," Emma said catching Savannah's attention and she turned her head to look at Emma. "You feeling okay?" She stared at Savannah intently and she shrugged as she looked down at her hands that lay intertwined on her lap.
"I'm feeling okay." Savannah sighed and looked back over at Emma and she shook her head.
"I know you're not okay Savannah, Nathan has-"
  "Do not," She said cutting her off and closing her eyes to hide the tears that started to form. She heard Emma sigh and felt her pat her hand lightly. Savannah took in a slow deep breath as she reopened her eyes just as a nurse entered the room.
"Savannah McAllister?" She asked looking up from her clipboard and Emma and Savannah jumped up from their seats.
"Finally." Savannah muttered under her breath as they walked up to her.
"Follow me, sweetie." She said kindly and Savannah gave her a brief smile as they followed her to the Doctor's office. "Dr. Martinez will be right with you." The nurse said once Savannah sat on the examining table and Emma sat in a waiting chair.
"I can't wait to see my God-son or God-daughter!" Emma squealed and Savannah chuckled as she rolled her eyes at her. "He or she is going to be drop dead gorgeous, we'll have to fight off all those boys." She teased and Savannah smiled as she realized that her daughter or son was going to be very beautiful or very good looking. She knew that if she had a son he'd look exactly like Nathan with his bright hypnotizing blue eyes and that devilishly handsome face, so she naturally hoped for a girl.
"Is my little Savannah having a baby of her own?" Her doctor, Doctor Martinez, asked in disbelief with a huge grin on his face and the girls giggled at his reaction.
"Yes I am, Doctor Martinez." Savannah confirmed and he sighed as he continued to smile at her.
"I remember when you were six years old and I checked out that bad cut on your knee. Now," He sighed again and gestured to her bump. "You're going to be a mommy." She nodded her head as a smile appeared on her face. "Well let's go check up on this little girl or boy, shall we?" He asked and she nodded her head.
      Savannah laid on the table as Dr. Martinez moved the controller over her abdomen until a tiny little baby appeared on the screen. "There's your little girl or boy," He said and Savannah stared at the ultrasound in amazement and tears began to fill in her eyes. "You're going to have one beautiful baby on your hands, Savannah." Dr. Martinez teased and she giggled as a tear slowly trailed down her cheek.
"Oh my gosh! He's so tiny!" Emma squealed as she gave Savannah's hand that she was holding a light squeeze and Savannah nodded in agreement but the only thing that she could think about at that moment, is how much she wanted Nathan to be there to witness the first ultrasound of their baby.
      Nat aimed the ball toward the rim as he stood at the three point line, then he threw it in the air and the ball went through the hoop with a swish. His Dad stood next to the net and tossed the ball back at Nat. "You keep it up, Miami will definitely sign you for sure. That would make your Mom, Savannah, and I insanely proud." His Dad said confidently and Nat nodded as he bounced the basketball up and down. "I always liked Savannah. Never interfered with your practice time, she's a keeper." He said and Nat looked down at the basketball as his heart started to ache. He missed Savannah like crazy but she wouldn't answer his calls, texts, or even talk to him at school. He wanted to be apart of Savannah and their baby's life but she just wouldn't let him. That was when Nat realized the only way to get Savannah back was to prove he was serious about her and he figured out one way to start it off.
"Dad?" Nat asked as he looked up at him.
"Yeah, Nat?" He asked as he looked at Nat with concern.
"Savannah's pregnant." Nat finally admitted and his Dad's hands fell from his waist and a blank expression appeared on his face. A moment later, his Dad shook his head and threw his hands up in the air.
"You just fucked up your entire life Nathan!" His Dad yelled and Nat flinched as he stared at the ground. "You had everything planned out! You were gonna graduate, go to college, then get signed by Miami, then you get married, and start a family! Not start a family before all that!" He shouted and Nat continued to stare at the ground with a blank expression on his face. He felt no emotion as his Dad stormed inside the house angrily. He threw the ball back in the rack and stormed out of his backyard determined to find Savannah.
      Emma handed Savannah her baggie hoodie once they were parked in front of Savannah's house. "You gotta tell your parents soon, Sav. You can't hide your pregnancy forever." Emma said softly as Savannah started to put on the hoodie. Once she had it on, she looked at Emma with a tired look.
"I've been trying to tell them for two months now, Em. My Dad's always at work and Catherine's always busy with her designs or whatever." Savannah sighed as she exited the car. Savannah's Dad, Luke was an owner of a chain of car repair shops throughout Florida and Savannah's Step-Mom Catherine was the interior decorator for houses, hotels, and other businesses. Savannah's real Mom, Nina, had died eleven years earlier of a rare heart disease that no one knew she had. Ever since her Mom died, her Dad takes Savannah every three months to get her heart checked and she takes pills to keep her healthy. She missed her Mom terribly, especially now since she knew that her Mother would help her with her pregnancy.
      They walked up to her front door and Savannah stepped inside only to find her parents sitting on the couch, waiting for her. "Hello Savannah and Emma," Catherine said sarcastically and the girls looked at each other nervously. "Where have you two been? And before you lie, I'd think you'd like to know that Nat's parents just called." She said and Savannah's heart stopped as the blood rushed to her face. They stared at her quietly and her mouth fell open but nothing seemed to come out. She was on the verge of tears as she looked at them both trying to find the words to speak.
"You're pregnant?" Her Dad demanded and Savannah looked at the ground completely embarrassed and ashamed. "Anna, I'm not mad at you but I thought I raised a better girl who knew that if she was going to have sex to either get on the pill or use protection." He sighed as he leaned foreword and rested his forearms on his knees. Catherine shook her head and frowned at her.
"Well, don't think you're gonna drop out of school young lady. I want my Grandchild to know that even though you had a baby at seventeen, you still graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA." She said and Savannah nodded her head as she blinked back her tears. "Does Nat know?" She asked softly and Savannah bit her lip as the tears started to fall.
"Yeah, but he, uh, he's got bigger things to worry about than me and the baby." She croaked out and looked down at the ground again.
"You mean to tell me that that boy isn't taking any responsibility?" Her Dad demanded and Savannah looked up at him and shook her head quickly.
"No, he wants responsibility it's just he has basketball to focus on-"
"That baby is his main responsibility now, not basketball." Her Dad said sternly and Savannah shook her head.
"I can raise the baby by myself, it's okay." She said and her Dad stood up and walked up to her. He wiped away her tears and then placed his hands on her shoulders.
"He has to help you, Anna." He said softly and nodded her head slowly. Then the door bell rang and Savannah looked at Emma confused. Emma shrugged and turned to open the door.
      Nat stood there staring at a red eyed Savannah who was being held by her Dad and she stared back in surprise. "Hi everyone." Nat said nervously and everyone looked at him.
"Get inside Nat, we need to talk." Luke said and Nat nodded as Emma opened the door wider and he stepped inside.
      They all sat in silence and Savannah sat next to Nat uncomfortably and avoided eye contact the whole time her parents talked. "So you're going to stay in the baby's life?" Her Mom asked Nat and he nodded his head sternly.
"Of course, I already told my parents about Sav being pregnant." He announced and Savannah looked at him in shock.
"No, you didn't. You would never do that." She said in disbelief and Nat looked into her eyes for a long period of time.
"I did. I'm serious about you and our baby, Savannah." He said softly and she just stared at him as her heart started to ache. "Savannah, I love you and I already love our baby. Please let me help you raise him or her and be in your lives." He said and Savannah started to cry as she finally decided to let him be in their child's life.
"Okay Nat. Okay." She whispered and Nat slowly reached over and grabbed her hand.
