• Chapter Eleven •
*Senior Year*
Savannah stared at Nat sleeping next to her peacefully and she smiled. She loved when they made love, she never felt closer to him when they were connected in such an intimate way. "You know," Nat said, with his eyes still closed, which caused Savannah to jump a little at the sound of his voice. "When you stare at me like that it just makes me want to make love to you again." He teased and Savannah giggled as Nathan slowly opened his eyes to grin at her and she couldn't help but grin back.
"I'm sorry, you just look so peaceful and at ease while you sleep." She admitted nervously and Nat chuckled as he leaned over and kissed her gently.
"I love you, Savannah." He sighed tiredly and Savannah smiled as she rolled her eyes.
"I love you too, now hurry up and get dressed or else you'll be late for practice. I don't want your Dad to get mad at me for making you late... again." She teased and he laughed as he stretched, trying to wake himself up then climbed out of the bed.
"Yeah, you're right." He said as he started to get redressed and Savannah closed her eyes, as she suddenly became tired. "You tired already?" Nat teased and Savannah shrugged, but continued to keep her eyes closed.
"Well, I only slept for like twenty minutes after we did it. So, I'm still exhausted." She teased and Nathan chuckled again as he shook his head and grabbed his gym bag.
"But you're always tired lately, Sav. Kinda like how Emma was when-"
"Don't." Savannah said quickly cutting him off. The room fell silent as the tension in the air seemed to rise. "Don't bring that up ever. I'm not pregnant. I'm on birth control. I'm just tired." She admitted as she kept her eyes closed, trying not to think of sophomore year when Emma lost her baby.
"I'm sorry. I know you're not, it just came out baby. I'm sorry." He whispered as he sat down on the bed and rubbed her back soothingly.
"I know, it's okay." She sighed and opened her eyes to stare at him. He leaned down and kissed her, but that kiss turned very passionate and causing Savannah to moan into the kiss. She slowly pushed him away and took in a ragged breath. "Go to practice, I'll see you later." She whispered and Nat nodded then leaned back down to give her another deep, passionate kiss then pulled away and jumped off the bed.
"I love you, I'll text you as soon as I get outta practice." He whispered as Savannah slowly drifted off to sleep and then left.
Savannah woke up to the sound of someone entering the house from downstairs and she sighed tiredly as she rubbed her eyes. "Savannah, are you here?" Emma called and Savannah gasped as she jumped out of the bed and threw on one of her sweaters, not caring if she was only wearing her bra underneath. She grabbed her jeans and tried to quickly pull them on but wasn't quick enough because Emma opened the door causing her to freeze. Emma stared at her in surprise and then she looked confused. Emma looked at the messed up bed and noticed that both of Savannah's pillows had indents of someone laying on them and she slowly started to realize what happened here. "You had sex?" She scoffed and Savannah looked down, clearly ashamed and felt bad that she broke her promise to her best friend.
"It just happened, Emm... I love him..." Savannah trailed off nervously and slowly met Emma's gaze. Emma folded her arms tightly against her chest angrily as she shook her head.
"Get dressed, we're getting you a pregnancy test." Emma said as she turned her around to leave.
"Emma, I'm not pregnant-"
"It's better," She turned around cutting Savannah off. "To be safe than sorry." She sighed and then left the room. Savannah shook her head and rubbed her forehead tiredly.
Savannah opened the bathroom door and placed the pregnancy test on her computer desk. "Happy? Now, when it shows up negative will you finally trust me that I'm being safe?" Savannah demanded and Emma shook her head slowly as she watched the results appear on the test.
"You're not careful, because you're pregnant." She sneered as she pointed to the test and Savannah quickly looked down at the test and her eyes popped open and she felt her heart drop.
"Oh shit..." Savannah breathed out as tears started to swell up in her eyes and with every beat of her heart she felt it ache in fear.
"Yeah, oh shit. I can't believe you! I made you promise me that you wouldn't have sex because I did not want you to end up like me!" Emma exclaimed as tears started to form in her eyes as well. "I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy, Sav. You're my best friend, I don't want you to lose yourself if you lose this baby." She sobbed and Savannah nodded as she pulled her into a tight hug.
"I know Emma, I know. But I can't get rid of my baby..." She trailed off and Emma pulled out of the hug to stare at her like she was crazy.
"Sav, you can't have a baby! Why would even want to have a baby after what happened sophomore year?" Emma demanded and Savannah looked down at her fingers nervously and she just couldn't get rid of her baby. She wouldn't be able to live with herself.
"I can't have an abortion, Emm. I couldn't kill my own baby." She whispered and Emma just stared at her dumbfounded, with her mouth hung open and tears in her eyes.
"I don't know what to say, Savannah. I just can't believe you're going to have a baby after everything." Emma sighed as she picked up her purse and then wiped away her tears. "You need to tell, Nat. I need to be alone for a little while, Sav. But call me in case anything bad happens, okay? I'm still your best friend." She croaked out. Savannah nodded her head as she started to cry even worse and Emma took in a ragged breath and then left. Savannah collapsed onto her bed and clutched her stomach as she sobbed uncontrollably. How could she have let this happen? She knew that they were always careful, it just didn't make sense to her.
Savannah walked into class the next day nervously and hoped she would still be able to sit next to Emma. When she noticed Emma sitting by herself with her head on the table and everyone glancing at her worriedly, she knew Emma was still upset. "I think she might be pregnant again." One girl whispered as Savannah walked by them.
"That would be awful! I wouldn't be able to have another child after-"
"Hey," Savannah said cutting the two girls off and they stared at her in surprise. "She's not pregnant again. Do yourselves a favor and mind your own damn business and don't spread lies about someone you don't even know." Savannah scoffed as she walked away from them and approached Emma. Emma lifted her head up and smiled at Savannah as she sat down next to her at the lab table. "Are you-" Savannah was cut off when Emma pulled her into a tight hug and Savannah was taken aback by the sudden hug, but then quickly recovered and hugged her back as tight as she could.
"Thank you for making them shut up." Emma whispered and Savannah nodded.
"Of course." She whispered back and then suddenly Emma pulled away.
"Oh crap, I shouldn't be hugging you so tight." Emma muttered and the people in front of them stared at Savannah confused. Savannah blushed and then became angry once again.
"Did you not hear what I just told those girls up front? Mind. your. own. damn. business." She said, venom laced through her voice and they quickly turned around and for the rest of the class no one even looked at them.
Emma and Savannah walked down the hall towards their locker and Savannah couldn't help but yawn. "You're really tired, huh?" Emma asked softly and Savannah nodded as she leaned against the locker next to theirs.
"Yeah. I really am." She admitted tiredly and Emma pursed her lips as she thought about something while she opened their locker. "What're you thinking about?" Savannah asked.
"Well," Emma sighed as she pulled out her pre-calculus book. "I remember when I was pregnant, my doctor told me that I wasn't getting enough vitamins in my system, maybe you should see an obstetrician." She suggested and Savannah stared at her in shock that Emma brought up the pregnancy without becoming angry or sad.
"Will you come with me?" Savannah asked and Emma looked at her as she bit her lip nervously and her heart ached at the thought of seeing other pregnant woman. "Please Emma? I really need you to be there when I go." Savannah begged and Emma continued to stare at her conflicted with her emotions.
"Okay..." She trailed off nervously and Savannah pulled her into a tight hug.
Luke and Nat walked down the hall and stopped at their locker that was only a few feet away from Savannah and Emma's locker. They stared at the girls in confusion and then looked at one another. "What's wrong with them?" Luke asked as he stared at Emma who had her eyes closed and for once she actually looked happy. When the girls pulled away, Emma started getting all excited and a smile appeared on her face. "Nat, are you seeing this?" Luke asked incredulously and Nat nodded his head slowly in shock. Emma hadn't looked that happy in over two years and he wondered what Savannah had done to make her happy again.
"She's getting better." Nat said happily and Luke smiled as he watched the girls giggle with each other as Emma closed the locker and they walked down the hallway and out of sight.
"Should I try and talk to her again?" Luke asked excitedly and Nat shook his head.
"I don't know if she's ready for that, let's give her a couple days." Nat said as he threw his gym uniform in his duffel bag.
"I've been waiting to talk to her for two years, Nat. I love her, I was going to marry her, she was going to have my baby..." Luke trailed off as he looked down at the ground and Nat stared at him worriedly. "I remember how peaceful she looked when they let me hold her," Luke whispered, his eyes still glued to the floor but he was clearly seeing his dead daughter before they took her away almost two years ago. "She was so beautiful, Nat." He chuckled as he slowly snapped out of it and Nat nodded his head as he placed his hand on Luke's shoulder.
"I know she was." Nat said sternly and Luke smiled.
"I'll never forget her." Luke breathed out as he looked at the tattoo on his wrist with his daughter's birthdate in roman numerals.
"I know, Luke." Nat sighed as he closed the locker and pulled them towards their next class.
Savannah watched Luke and Emma talking to one another across the parking lot and she was checking for any signs of Emma getting upset or becoming uncomfortable, but so far nothing was happening. "I told him to wait." Nat sighed as he walked over to Savannah and she looked at him with worry. She didn't want to tell him yet. Not when he's under a lot of pressure already, plus she was scared that he would leave her after he found out.
"Well, I think it's great that they're finally talking. I've also been monitoring their conversation this whole time and so far, it seems like it's going pretty well." Savannah admitted and Nat smiled at her as he leaned down and kissed her cheek.
"Well, that's great." He said softly as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and she leaned against. "Just imagine if that was us," He whispered and Savannah tensed against him. Oh God, she thought, he knows about the baby. "I'd probably be in shock if you told me you were pregnant. But that doesn't matter, because you're not." He said and then looked back over at Luke and Emma.
"Yeah, I am not." Savannah sighed as she stared at the ground.
Emma and Savannah sat in Savannah's car a few weeks later as they waited outside the gym for Nat and Luke to get out of practice. "I'm gonna go in, this might be the last time I'm able to watch Nat play without being heartbroken." Savannah sighed as she started to open the door.
"Everything's going to be okay, Sav. I know it will." Emma said sternly as she gave Savannah's hand a reassuring squeeze.
"I really hope so, Emm. I'll call you later and let you know how it goes." She said as she closed her door then slowly made her way toward the gym. She stared at the door knob in fear and told herself that if she didn't tell him now, she never will. Savannah took in a deep breath and opened the door quickly and stepped inside.
