24. Demogorgon
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
DEMOGORGON
The group were running through the hallways of the middle school faster than any of them had ever ran before.
Truthfully, Kimmy had no idea what the plan was, so she just followed Lucas and Dustin who were leading the small group.
It was only when Lucas motioned for the five to stop in a hall as he checked to see if it was save to move around the corner, that Kimmy noticed Mike and Eleven were holding hands, confusion filling her senses.
"Okay," Lucas breathed, motioning for the group to follow. "Let's go."
Kimmy was terrified as the group ran in and out of the halls, no doubt they'd be caught soon, the school wasn't that big and if as many people were there looking for them as Mike said, then they were done for.
"How did they find us?" Lucas turned to ask the group while still running, despite knowing no one could really supply him with an answer.
"I don't know," Mike rushed out, sounding equally as panicked. "But they were headed for the gym."
Kimmy caught Aaron's eye for a second as she heard that, sending him a horrified expression, watching as he returned it instantly.
"Lando." Dustin breathed out.
Kimmy almost fell backwards at the force the group stopped running, the door directly in front of them swinging open with someone holding a flashlight directly in their eyes.
Kimmy felt her breath hitch at the sight of the two men watching them, they certainly looked big and scary enough to send her into a spiral.
"Got 'em!" One of them called, presumably to the others.
Kimmy turned on her heel instantly, running in the opposite direction as she heard the rest of the twelve year olds do the same. The only issue being that Kimmy and Aaron were now in the front and Kimmy was sure neither knew where to go.
Sure enough, the first corner they turned more people were waiting for them with flashlights. The group turned again, this time following Eleven as they looked desperately for a way out of the building.
The group didn't get far before they were cut off again, only now the flashlights the people cornering them before had were replaced with a gun.
Kimmy's eyes widened and she subconsciously took a step back as the woman pointed it at the group.
Kimmy was panicking, like, really panicking. However even then she could tell it was more worry for her friends than for herself.
The lights of the flashlights began to flicker, just as the woman went to pull the trigger, she stopped, as if she physically couldn't move.
Kimmy couldn't stop the way her jaw dropped open or the way she moved closer to Aaron and Dustin as she watch blood begin to poor from the woman's eyes and ears.
The girl soon caught on upon seeing Eleven's stance, Kimmy just didn't know she was capable of actually killing someone with her powers, as dumb as it may sound.
Hesitantly, Kimmy looked around and soon realised that it wasn't just the woman, but it was every guard surrounding them that had blood pouring from their eyes and nose as they shook.
Seconds later, and each and every one of them dropped to the floor dead, Kimmy stood in shock at what she had seen. She had quite literally just witnessed the murder of several people, she didn't exactly know what to do with herself.
But, this worry soon washed away as she watched Eleven fall to the floor next, Kimmy rushing towards her as she suddenly feared perhaps her friend was dead too.
"El," Mike breathed, crouching next to Kimmy as he shook her shoulder. "El, are you okay? El! Somethings wrong-"
"She's just drained." Dustin corrected in a soft voice but Mike was quick to disagree.
"No, no, no, she won't wake up." He panicked, still shaking her shoulder but receiving nothing in response. "El, El!"
"I think she's okay, Mike." Kimmy blurted before she could stop herself, just about wincing at the glare sent her way from the boy. "She's never used that much power before, she's just recharging at a higher level-"
"No, Kimmy! She's not!" Mike dismissed, leaning down to press his ear to her back. "She's barely breathing."
"We gotta go!" Lucas stressed in a firm voice, however it was not Mike who answered him.
"Leave her." A male voice called calmly, causing Kimmy to lurch away from Eleven and stand instantly, the four boys doing the same. "Step away from the child-"
"No!" Mike snapped, although his voice shook slightly with fear. "If you want her, you have to kill us first."
"That's right!" Dustin yelled at the man in a faux confidence.
"Eat shit!" Lucas yelled about ten times louder than Dustin had been, although unlike Dustin, Lucas didn't have an underlining element of fear behind his voice.
Kimmy felt her eyes widen as the two spoke, too scared to move, Aaron didn't say anything either, but she guessed he was equally as scared as she had been.
Kimmy literally felt her heart drop in her chest as someone grabbed her harshly from behind, just about lifting her off the ground.
She let out an almost squeek of surprise, but quickly began yelling at the man to let her go, kicking the guard who had the hold on her wherever she could, but nothing seemed to work. It seemed as if the four boys next to her were in the same boat.
Then, the group watched powerlessly as the man with silver hair who had spoken earlier bent down and picked Eleven up, holding her face in his hands as he shook her awake.
"Let us go!" She found herself yelling at him, causing the girl to look over.
"Let her go you, bastards!" Mike added, sounding much more pained in his yell than Kimmy had done.
Eleven began to whimper and cry at the sight of her friends struggling in the hands of the guards, however the man quickly shushed her.
Kimmy couldn't tell what the older man was saying to her but he had a look of fury on his face as he did so.
She watched as Eleven weakly shook her head, turning and reaching a hand out towards Mike. "Mike." She struggled to get out the man's grasp, repeating Mike's name over and over.
The lights began flickering once more, only it very clearly wasn't Eleven this time. What puzzled Kimmy was even the guards seemed baffled by this.
"Blood." Mike muttered, a look of horror on his features.
"What?" Lucas asked faintly, sounding just as confused as she felt.
"Blood." Mike repeated louder, referring to all the dead guards lying in pools of blood.
The wall opposite the group began to crack, a loud thud repetitively booming across the hall as the wall began to cave in on its own.
Until, a claw stuck its hand out and began to screech, causing Kimmy to still in fear as she gasped, her eyes widened beyond belief.
"Demogorgon." She heard Dustin mutter faintly before the creature crashed through the wall.
Kimmy and Dustin screamed at the sight of it, the man holding her letting her go as he pulled his gun from his jacket.
The party taking their chance and making a run for it, quickly making their ways over to Eleven as the man who had been with her began shooting at the demogorgon, Dustin picking the frail girl up.
The group began sprinting down the hall and out of sight, the only thing behind was the screeches of the monster as well as the continuous guns being shot at it as the lights flickered.
Mike lead the group to Mr Clarke's science class, rushing in and slamming the door closed behind the group.
Kimmy frowned as she watched Dustin rush over with Eleven still in his arms, she looked even worse than before.
Dustin placed her down on one of the longer tables in the back of the class which were used for experiments, Mike reaching out to grab her hand.
"Just hold on a little longer, okay?" Mike attempted to comfort her, but it was clear as day that he was terrified. "He's gone. The bad man's gone. We'll be home soon, and my mom... she'll get you your own bed. And you can eat as many eggos as you want."
Kimmy watched with a saddened expression as Eleven let out a breathy laugh, sniffling as he gripped her hand. Kimmy didn't say how she felt, but she was quite doubtful about Mike being able to fulfil his promises with the issues at hand.
"Promise?" Eleven asked softly through tears, her voice coming out in an almost sob.
"Promise." Mike nodded firmly.
The demogorgon let out a screech, sounding extremely close by, causing Mike to drop the girls hand from surprise and lurch back.
Kimmy felt herself jump as she rushed to stand at the back of the classroom, helplessly listening to the monster who was stood at the other end of the door.
The gunfire stopped, and Kimmy foolishly allowed herself to feel some relief, letting out a shaky breath as she began to stutter from fear. "Is it- is it dead?"
No one answered her, they weren't given the time, because the monster burst through the door, taking it right off its hinges.
The party screamed at the sight, Dustin slapping Lucas on the arm as he started yelling at him, however Lucas already had his bag on the table and had began searching frantically through it.
"Get the wrist rocket!" Dustin yelled, sounding absolutely terrified. "Get it now!"
Lucas was struggling to get the rock into the wrist rocket, presumably due to nerves.
"Hurry, Lucas!" Aaron yelled, taking a step back as the monster roared again.
Dustin collected the rocks from Lucas' bag and cupped them in his hand, prepared to hand them over to Lucas as to not waste any time.
Lucas shot at the monster, and just as Kimmg suspected but prayed was wrong, it did nothing. The monster didn't even flinch.
So, Lucas shot another, and another. But it was no good, it was doing nothing and the monster was only making its way closer, cornering the group up against the back wall of the class.
"It's not working!" Lucas yelled frantically, much to Kimmy's agreement.
"Hit him again!" Mike shouted.
Lucas did just that, and to everyone's surprise, the demogorgon went flying back as Lucas' rock hit it. Smashing against the blackboard at the opposite end of the room.
Kimmy quickly realised that this actually hadn't been the doings of Lucas' wrist rocket as Eleven walked between the group, her nose dripping with blood as she walked passed her friends slowly.
However, panics struck Kimmy when she didn't stop, getting closer and closer to the demogorgon on the other side of the room.
Mike rushed after her, "Eleven, stop!"
Mike was cut short as Eleven flicked her hand out, sending Mike flying back and smashing shaking the cupboards holding all the science class equipment at the other side of the room.
Kimmy took a step back, crouching down to make sure Mike was alright, all while watching the girl in front of the group.
She was dangerously close now, right in front of it was she finally came to a stop. Kimmy watched as the girl hesitated, turning her head to glance at Mike with a teary expression. "Goodbye, Mike."
Kimmy grew increasingly worried at the words, feeling close to tears herself as she watched her friend turn back to face the monster before her.
Eleven raised her hand, causing the monster to screech out painfully, so loud that Kimmy and the party had to cover their ears.
Kimmy put her head down at the sound of Eleven's screams, not wanting to watch if something were to happen.
Until, suddenly, the noise stopped. Kimmy lifted her head abruptly to glance at where the monster had been, onto to find it had now gone.
The only issue being Eleven was no longer there either.
A heavy dust taking the place of the two.
Kimmy wore a gobsmacked expression as she watched Mike make his way over to the centre of the room, yelling out for the girl through tears.
Dustin bent down to Kimmy's level where she still sat on the floor against the cupboards and offered her a hand. Kimmy shakily took it, terrified to even move too much after what had just happened.
The group began to call for their friend, only to get nothing in response.
...
Aaron watched as everyone's family's came to collect them from the school with a frown. He didn't even know what he was still doing there he knew no one was coming to pick him up.
He and Kimmy sat on the school wall and watched all the family's rush over to hug their children.
Aaron found himself wondering why Kimmy's family hadn't come to collect her either, he knew they were home, she spoke about them all the time, even if it was just for a short moment.
Aaron and Kimmy didn't even have a blanket like the others did, as far as the emergency services were aware, the two were just watching from afar trying to figure out what was going on.
Aaron checked the watch on his wrist, only to find it was near twelve at night. He then sighed, jumping down from the wall, facing Kimmy as he turned to grab his backpack from next to where he had been sat.
"Are your parents coming for you?" Aaron asked her, watching as she bit her lip at his question. She almost looked as if she was looking for a lie, before she dropped it and sighed.
"No." She replied finally, her face blank as she spoke. "Is anyone coming to get you?"
"No." He replied instantly, in the same sort of monotone voice as Kimmy had spoken in. "I'm leaving, you coming?"
Kimmy furrowed her brows in confusion, yet didn't move an inch. "I thought you just said no one was coming to get you-"
"I know." He nodded, throwing his backpack onto his back. "I'm walking home, you can walk with me if you want."
Kimmy seemed to take up his offer the second it had fell past his lips, jumping from the wall just like he had done moments before and walking next to him.
It seemed as if it were an almost unspoken rule that the two didn't mention the fact they were the only two with parents who didn't bother show up for them.
The more Aaron thought about it, the more he worried about Steve. He wasn't surprised he didn't come get him, but he still had no idea where he was. Aaron wouldn't have been concerned about his older brothers whereabouts if he hadn't seen what he had seen that day.
"Do you think you guys will be at school tomorrow?" Kimmy asked him as the two walked to her house, sounding extremely hesitant as she spoke.
"Um, I don't think so." Aaron murmured, shrugging his shoulders as he walked. "I think we're all going to see Will in hospital tomorrow."
Kimmy nodded, looking as if she was unsure on what to say.
Aaron was sure the awkwardness between the two was because of what they had just seen, it was a lot to take in for a couple of twelve year olds.
Aaron could tell she was beginning to panic about what she was supposed to do at school the next day by herself, causing Aaron to blurt the following words. "You can come to the hospital with us if you want-"
"No," Kimmy dismissed quickly, shaking her head. "I don't think it would be, you know... appropriate for me to come. I don't even think Will knows me."
Aaron went to object but stopped himself, she was right, the group had only started talking to Kimmy after Will's disappearance.
"Maybe we won't have school tomorrow," Aaron shrugged, the thought only popping into his head then. "Mr Clarke's classroom is in quite a mess."
Kimmy shook her head, a laugh falling from her lips as she looked to him. "I doubt it, the school would stay open if there was a war going on, a doubt they care about one classroom."
Aaron scrunched his nose at her words, tilting his head as he thought it over, ultimately deciding that she was right.
"I guess you're right," he mumbled, sounding deep in thought.
"Hey, what do you think will happen to my bike?" Aaron asked loudly, as if he'd just remembered about it - he had. "Do you think the chief will get our bikes for us?"
Kimmy wasn't given a chance to reply, because suddenly, a car went zooming past the two walking, Aaron rolling his eyes before he realised who it belonged to. His eyes widening upon realising it was Steve's.
"I'm so sorry, Kimmy," Aaron rushed out as he began walking straight ahead briskly rather than following her down the road to her left. "I've got to go. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
And with that said, he left. Running in the opposite direction of her, not even waiting for a response as he took off after the car.
Of course, Aaron couldn't keep up with the car, seeing as his brother was driving way over the speed limit.
Because of this, Aaron burst through the door of the family house hardly able to catch a breath. He placed a hand to his mouth as he dropped his bag to the floor, doing his best to take a breath.
"Steve?" Aaron called desperately, going to make his way up the stairs to his older brothers room before he stopped, catching sight of him in the kitchen when he passed the door.
"Where were you?" Aaron asked shakily, still taking deep breaths as he walked over to his brother, stopping abruptly as he caught sight of Steve placing a wet towel to his face.
"What happened to your face?" Aaron whispered, referring to the harsh black eye that was tainting his pale skin. "Did you get in a fight-"
"Jesus christ, Aaron!" Steve snapped, causing the younger boy to shut his mouth. "Just leave it."
Aaron looked at him for a long moment, but still never moving from his space where he stood in the kitchen.
"You have a black eye, Steve." Aaron unnecessarily pointed out in a whisper. "I was just asking-"
"Yeah, well don't." The older boy muttered in a harsh voice, moving from his space by the sink, leaving the kitchen, making sure to nudge Aaron's shoulder as he past him.
Aaron felt his shoulders drop as he watched his older brother climb the stairs, the younger Harrington quickly running after him. "I was just worried, Steve! I didn't know where you were the entire day, and then Nancy said she hadn't seen you-"
"Why would you go and ask Nancy if she had seen me?" Steve scoffed, still not halting his steps or turning to face his little brother. "It's none of your business where I go-"
"I know but I was worried!" Aaron snapped, getting frustrated as his brother purposely missed the point he was trying to make. "Do you not listen to me?"
Steve didn't reply, walking down the hall towards his room at a rapid pace. Aaron gave up chasing him, standing at the top of the stairs with a defeated demeanour.
"They found Will." He called desperately, trying his hardest to get Steve's attention. He didn't know why he had blurted about Will, but it was the first thing he could think of.
"Whatever," Steve mumbled, slamming his bedroom door behind him leaving Aaron in the hall alone.
Aaron furrowed his brows, sighing as he made his way to his own bedroom, taking off his coat as he went to make his way over to where his pyjamas were kept. However he stopped himself, stilling with a wide eyed expression as he realised what he had done.
He looked down at his feet with a horror filled expression as he realised he still had his shoes on. The carpet in his room covered in dirt from his now filthy shoes. Aaron dropped his head back and groaned in annoyance, reaching down to take his shoes off and instantly made his way down stairs to clean them.
Aaron had been hoping for an early night after the day he'd had, however he didn't end up getting into his bed until three-thirty that morning, unable to go to bed until he'd scrubbed each carpet and floor he'd walked on until the dirt was gone.
...
