Skating
"Oh come on Barry, it's not my fault Cisco and Caitlyn were asked to go with Dr. Wells to that weird sciency convention. AND it's not my fault you got stuck here. It really isn't smart to reveal that The Flash works for the police as a forensic scientist. Besides Dr. Wells didn't leave you to just sit in the lab and twiddle your thumbs. I don't know why you are complaining. You will get this done in no time, I should be the one complaining instead of trying to convince you to come which will result in me having to lug everything back and forth from the lab AND work on the results. " You rolled your eyes and you held the phone between your ear and shoulder as you moved around STAR Labs gathering equipment for the test the doctor asked for.
You hear him give an exasperated sigh. "Ok yeah, I see what you mean. But not to offend you but why... you? I mean, don't get me wrong you are awesome, just not... not with technical stuff. I don't want you to slow me down." You about drop the phone. Your mouth dropped open as you transferred the phone from your shoulder to your other hand, flipping your hair in defense, placing your other hand on your hip.
"Oh well excuse me! I happen to be very good at technical things, you know, if there are instructions." You widen your eyes and start searching for said instructions. "Why would Dr. Wells hire me in the first place if I was no good at technical stuff, that's all you guys deal with is technology. And shut your mouth, you know nothing of slowing down." You can hear chuckling from the other side of the phone. You couldn't help but crack a smile. He may be the fastest guy on the planet but he knows how to drive you up the wall. "Look just meet me at the rink, I'm sure that will be easy enough for you to do. Just wait a few minuets for me to put everything in the car. I don't need you waiting for me with that stupid grin on your face that I am oh so sure you have on right now."
On the other side of the phone Barry was sitting laying on his bed with one hand holding the cell to his ear and the other arm draped over his eyes. Sure enough he found himself smirking. Sitting up he ribbed his eyes and glanced at the clock. His eyes bugged looking at the time. 10:27 am. He flopped back down on the bed and moaned.
"What the heck (y/n)! It's too early for work today. I thought I would catch a break sense the lab group left."
He heard shuffling from the other end and a light scoff. "Yeah well not all of us. I DO work here you know." He couldn't help but laugh a bit, he loved teasing her about her real reason for being there. Dr. Wells never told the group that he had a niece until she showed up one morning talking about her stupid, old, wheel chaired uncle. Since then she has been what one might call a "support group" for any metahumans who wanted to use their powers for good. When it came to baddies she was in charge of making sure they felt comfortable in their new 'homes' we created. Barry was pleased to find out they had a new crew member and liked it even more that Cisco was gone, making it hard for him to bombard her with flirting fails.
"So, you coming or not?" If he was there he would be looking into the eyes of one determined woman who made saying no a very difficult thing.
"Yeah, yeah, I'll be there."
"Oh good!" He could hear an auditable sigh of relief. "I will see you in a bit." Then you hung up, leaving Barry to take his time getting ready. And by taking his time he really just does it without super speed. Sometimes he finds doing the simple things at normal speed makes the day last longer.
After getting ready and finding time to clean the house he headed out toward the ice rink. (Y/n) said that Dr. Wells wanted some specs on how the cold would effect his running, mainly his traction on ice. Seeing as how the crew is busy at the moment and it turns out that the doctor has no patience to do it when he gets back, Barry kind of felt bad (y/n) got left with it. That's when he had an idea. An ice rink is not the warmest place on the planet. He rushed out of the house and down to the closest coffee shop and got some hot chocolate for himself and (y/n), making sure to add a bit of caramel to it, just like you like it. He then made his way to the ice rink, stopping for just a second to grab skates.
He flew out on to the ice and almost collided with a figure bending over a bunch of wires and machinery. He reached his arms out, clasping his hands on your hips, not only stopping him but scaring you.
"AHHH!" You turned around with a jump but immediately relaxed as soon has you saw who it was. "Barry! You know for the fastest man alive you sure do keep a bad timing record. I had to drag everything out on the ice AND shoo away wanna-be skaters. This is the only ice rink I know of." You then looked at him out of the corner of your eye, giving him an accusing look. "Did you have to save someone?"
Barry opened his mouth to answer but you held your hand up. "Never mind. You are here now. Lets get this over with." Rubbing your arms you slowly shuffled on the ice toward a computer stand that emitted a bunch of wires. You started mumbling under your breath, "And WHY this had to be done now makes no sense. I am going to tighten one of uncle's wheels, make him irritated for once."
Barry watched as you started typing on the computer and messing with a few wires. He didn't miss the occasional glance at a poorly hidden paper flapping in the breeze, assuming it's the instructions you dearly need. He shook his head and smiled. He watched as your hair flapped in the wind and you rubbed your ungloved hands, mumbling something under your breath.
"Well if you would let me speak I would have told you I grabbed some hot chocolate for you." He pointed to the bleachers where he stowed the drinks and an extra pair of skates. "If I didn't know better I may be rubbing off on you at the speed you are talking." He chuckled and skated slowly over to you, looking over your shoulder at the monitor.
"Well that will be because it's so freaking cold out here. I just want to get this over with." You continued to tap on the keys then turned around to place a body monitor on his chest. Looking up into his blue-green eyes you stammered as you tried to form a coherent sentence. "B-but thank you for the hot cocoa." You bent your head as if focusing on the triggers you were attaching to him. "That was sweet of you. And here I am ragging on you. Look out this will be cold." You lifted his shirt and placed the last monitoring sticker on his chest, really trying hard not to stare or let your hand linger. He flinched but chuckled.
"Like what you see? I'm flattered but I'm cold." He took your hand, causing you to drop the hem of his shirt and look into his eyes. He rubbed your hands in his watching the chilled air come out in puffs from your sudden labored breathing. Well there goes your efforts of not lingering.
You shook your head and gently removed your hands from his, regretting it almost immediately. The faster you guys get this done the sooner you can warm up. "Right well," You clear your throat, "lets get this over with." You turned back to the instruments and synced up his monitors to the database. A green light flickered and you nodded your head with satisfaction. Now all you need is the speed.
"Alright where do you need me? I assume the green light means go." Barry slowly drifted away and stuck his hands in his pockets. He liked the feel of your hands in his, despite the cold. They were soft and strong, just like you.
"Yeah it means go. Position yourself where when you go around but don't hit anything." You turn slightly to point at a tall blinking pole. "That will be monitoring your wind generation and see if you are hitting any resistance. Your monitors on your body watch your body levels, duh. And this right here," You tapped your foot on a pad that looked to be about an inch in the ice, "tallies every time you make a full cycle." Thank goodness Wells had it installed before the experiment, you would have just told him to suck it up and do it when he got back if you had to melt the ice and reform it.
"Alright, sounds simple enough. What should I look for other than not hit you and the equipment?" Barry positioned himself like an Olympic speed skater. You couldn't help but stare at his form. Man he looks good in that suit. Thank goodness you didn't have to tell him not to wear his Flash suit, talk about attention. No he was wearing a black ice race suit and it totally did him good.
You heard the sound of him clearing his throat. You blinked. "Yup, don't hit me, I'm not as replaceable as the tech. Other than that be sure to see how the traction feels. Halfway through I will need you to take off the skates and see how you do without the boots. Just in case the next time you have to run on ice and you don't have time to slip on some skates." He rolled his eyes but smiled. You returned the smile and positioned your hand on the timer button as your other arm held a clip board to document the data.
"Alright. Ready." You raised your hand.
"GO!" You dropped your hand down like an ax. Almost instantly you felt him take off. You knew you should have brought the extra warm stuff. You totally forgot he can work up quite a breeze.
He made another pass. Correction; he can create quite a whirlwind.
After a few more passes you waved him down slightly moving to the outside ring. Finding out a little too late that that was probably not the best idea. You start to loose your footing, slipping and sliding, squealing as you fell right into his path. You call out his name but decide cringing before the impact, seeing as how that would serve you better. But you never felt the impact. You opened your eyes coming face to face with tan figure skating shoes. You flip your hair back as you look up the tall body of your friend and made contact with his kind eyes. He gently kneeled down, touching a hand down to the cold ice to steady himself.
"If you wanted me to stop you could have just said so. I don't think risking your life would have been worth it." He chuckled and extended his hand out to help you stand up. He used his other hand to brush a few rebellious hairs from your face. You found your footing and shook your head.
"I know that you dart!" You lightly shoved him making you both jostle a bit. "It just so happens that ice is slippery, especially when you have boots with no tread." You slowly try to scoot your way back to the computer when you slipped again, but you didn't hit the ground. You felt something on your arm hold you up. You turn around to find his hand holding your arm. You look at him and grin.
"Thanks." You whisper.
He nodded his head and pulled his hand back as he bent down to untie the laces on the skates. You let your eyes linger on him just a moment longer, taking in his fluid motions and the slight tossing of his hair in the wind. You, again, shook your head and got back to concentrating on making it back to the computer station. You have got to keep yourself focused. He is a colleague, not some model to goggle after. Though he could fill that role well.
"Alright so skates are off. You ready for test number two?" Barry lifted his left hand with two fingers raised. You nodded your head with a slight smile and tapped a few keys on the computer screen. After resetting some of the data holders you looked up at him and gave him a thumbs up.
"You are good to go. When you are ready." And with that he was gone. Well just around the rink. You shivered in the artificial wind vortex as you wrote down the readings, trying to compare notes to the first test all the while trying to keep your hair and papers from flying all over the place. After a few more rounds Barry came to a sliding stop right in front of you, spraying you with a bit of loose snow. He was panting, leaning on his knees with his hands. You glanced around the rink finding that the ice melted just a bit, but only where he had ran. The lap meter that was first layered under the ice was now revealed. Well at least it will be easier to take back to STAR Labs.
"Hey- hey yeah, ok. That was different. Ice is not the best terrain to run on, that's for sure." He walked slowly over to you and looked over your shoulder at the test results. You were still brushing the snow off of you and jumped when you felt a warm breath on your neck. You turned and looked up. You both shared a smile. Turning back around, you pointed to something on the screen.
"Alright. Both tests were quite all over the place." You pointed to another section of the screen. "What happened here?" Barry leaned closer to get a better look, not minding the smell of your perfume.
"Oh yeah, I was having issues keeping in line with the first tracks I made. I want to blame the loose snow but I was slipping all over the place." He turned his face toward you raising his eyebrows. "What does all this mean? Is Cisco going to make me ice running boots? I don't know how streamline those would turn out to be." You turned your head to him but totally did not expect to bump noses. You lean away trying to hide your burning blush. Barry cleared his throat but continued to look at you expectedly for an answer.
"Ah, well, knowing Cisco he will try to pitch that idea to Wells but I am pretty sure they just didn't want to do this test themselves so they waited until they were conveniently out of town to leave it to me. This test may mean absolutely nothing. But if you want my opinion of it all, I think this was to see how good you would be around the world." You turned back to the screen pushing a few buttons and keys. Various test data screens shot up and you aligned them so Barry could see them well.
You drew his attention to the first box. "Look there that was compact sand and loose sand." You pointed to another box of various information. "And that one there are the water tests we took a few months ago." You pointed out several other tests that had been carried out over the past few months, all having to do with different types of terrain. "If I understand it all, I think Wells is hoping to take you world wide."
You kept rambling on about your theories and ideas when you felt a hand rest on your shoulder and another rest on your moving hand. Barry loves it when you ramble on but to be honest he was starting to get really cold. He turned you to face him and he took the clipboard out of your other arm. Now that you had shut up and looking at him, he smiled.
"That's nice and all but I want to keep moving. How about we take a few turns around the rink. I will be sure to steer you clear of the ruts I made." He smiled as he started to turn you around and out of the rink. You looked up at him puzzled.
"But I was just starting to get into it. The one time I finally understand something no one is here to appreciate it." You huff as you try to concentrate on walking upright. Barry stopped and feigned a hurt look, placing a hand on his heart.
"What? No one to appreciate it? Oh (y/n) you don't give me enough credit. I was the one who ran for goodness sake!" He laughed a bit as he assumed his position behind you, steadying you when you occasionally slipped.
"Oh yeah says the man who stopped me in the middle of my mind blowing discovery to make me put on shoes with knives. Have you seen the Olympics? Ice skating is dangerous!" You start to get anxious and suddenly loose your balance. Barry made sure he had you before you both continued to slowly move forward. "Besides," you gasp as you start overcorrect yourself, trying to ignore Barry's warm hands on your back and waist, "I would rather have the now-freezing-cold hot chocolate you got for us." You both finally made it out. Walking on hard, warm, earthy ground never felt so beautiful. If you weren't so cold you would have kissed the ground.
Barry went off to put on some regular clothes as you take a sip from the surprisingly still warm cocoa. He comes back and raises his eyebrows in question about the cocoa, you give him a thumbs up and keep sipping. He comes over and grabs his own drink sipping, gingerly. You both sit there enjoying the now noon sun shining down on the rink, making everything sparkle.
"So you ready to give it a try?" Barry got of his bench and kneeled down in front of you, starting to untie your laced boots. You put your cup down and put your hand on his head making him look up.
"Um Barry, I think I can take my shoes off myself." You hesitantly brought your hands down to finish what he started but you were shaking. Darn these confounded nerves! Barry noticed and quickly grabbed your hands in his. This caused you to look up and meet his captivating eyes.
"Right, like you can do that with shaking hands. You know you can trust me to keep you up on the ice right?" Barry's eyes shown nothing but pure trust. You looked down and let out a long low breath. He took one of his hands and placed a finger under your chin making you look up at him again. "Hey, what's up?"
"GAh!" You moved away from him slightly and threw you hands into the air. "Fine! I'll just give you another reason to look down at me." You huffed and crossed your arms, looking incredulously at the stupidly handsome man kneeling in front of you. "I...I don't know how to skate. Never learned. Never had any reason to." You dared him to laugh, to look away, to do something.
But what Barry did next he himself was not ready for, let alone you. He leaned in and just slightly pecked your nose. He had wanted to kiss you on the lips but thought against it, seeing as how he didn't want to feel the wrath of your masked surprise. He pulled away and grinned, watching as your face went from guarded to bashful.
"I don't know what made you think you are looked down upon. I find you to be quite endearing. Now get up and put those skates on. There is nothing like the present right?!" Barry jumped up and sped his skates on and patiently waited for you to join him. When you did he wrapped one arm around your waist and used the other to hold your hand. He leaned in to whisper in your ear, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Flash Duo from America!" And he kicked off sending you both across the ice, skates scratching out fresh snow, making you giggle like a school girl.
You may not have been any good in the lab but Barry made you feel like you were a pro on the ice.
