"Were you always this unfunny or is that a new thing?" Lunetta teased Aidan as he attempted to retell a joke someone on his soccer team had told him a couple weeks before hand.
"You just had to be there." Aidan's Adam's apple jerked embarrassedly, he traced a pattern through the sand to avoid eye contact with her.
"I'm joking Addy." She pushed his shoulder playfully allowing her her hand to linger a little longer than Aidan felt comfortable with.
He liked her, but he was unsure how to respond to her playful gestures.
They were perched on the patch of beach beside Lunetta's grandparents house. The tide was coming in and occasionally greeted them with a refreshing warm sensation.
Aidan thought that in a strange and bizarre way Lunetta was like a sister to him and yet he always got this light headed feeling around her; that reassured him that she meant more than a friend to him but his racing hormones and newly found feeling were very confusing.
"Aidan..." Lunetta seemed unsure whether to finish her sentence,"...I had a strange dream last night." She pulled her knees up and tucked her head on top of them neatly.
"Wanna talk about it?" He rubbed his palm across her back to soothe her.
"I do, but thinking about it scares me." She gulped and stared onto the deep blue horizon in front of them.
"How about you just describe it to me like it was a movie you watched." Aidan suggested, she nodded her head in agreement to, but still she concentrated on the setting sun which blazed across the sky above them.
"Okay, please don't think I'm crazy or anything for having dreams like this." A little tear trailed down her cheek, she looked so lost for a moment and all Aidan wanted to do was cheer her up somehow.
Aidan pulled her into a hug in a further effort to comfort her as she sobbed for a few moments.
Aidan was surprised by how suddenly the atmosphere felt so tense, after a few deep breaths she began to retell her dream that almost felt real but something about it just didn't feel right.
"We were sitting in my grandparents house, the lighting was dimmed and there was an erey feeling to the scene." Lunetta gazed into Aidan's blue eyes for reassurance that it was just a dream, as she caught her reflection in his glace she knew it was.
"I promise you, it was just a dream Lunes." Aidan patted her knee lightly.
"And we were sitting at the dinner table, do you remember the wooden one? That had all the initials of my family carved into them at their seating places?"
Aidan nodded although Lunetta's words made him trance-like, he remembered with a sly grin.
"We finished dinner with my grandparents but Dave and Angie weren't there; so we decided to explore some of the rooms which I've never been to before. It felt almost real up until this moment, but before we got into the first room we bumped into my grandfather, remember he was a tall, gaunt man?" Lunetta seemed detached from the retelling of her dream, almost as if she wished her memory had forgotten it.
"I remember her, Lunes. He always carried a penknife in his handkerchief for protection, he seemed quick witted." Aidan reminisced, distracting by his own memories.
" Yes well, his illness made him appear pale in comparison to the rest of us." Lunetta gulped nervously before she continued.
"But this man wasn't my abuelo, he had a devilish grin on his face that confirmed it for me, but you didn't believe me; so we followed him into the room. It was pitch black, I was trying to hold back my tears and you were holding onto my hand so tightly it made it al feel so real," she paused dramatically and scrunched her eyelids shut.
"He was a lovely man, Lunetta, your abuelo was a great man. You could tell he cared about you from the way he looked at you. Is that why your upset about your dream?" Aidan guessed but she just shook her head with sight confusion.
"Aidan, the person inside my abuelo's body wasn't him, it was an evil demon or something like that; his eyes were completely black." Lunetta insisted as she admired the mixture of pink and orange colours that scattered across the setting sun.
Aidan rested his hands on top of Lunetta's resting them on her knee, she looked slightly bewildered, almost as if she really did believe that this dream was more like reality.
"But the next moment I know the lights are dimly lit and the person holding my hand isn't you but this strange man pretending to be my abuelo."Her tiny frame began to shake gently at first and then more vigorously at the memory.
Aidan continued to rub his hand against her back to calm her down, the disappearance of the sun had made the mood feel more sullen and Aidan realised that she really needed his full attention
"You can stop now if this is too much for you to recollect." Aidan voiced quietly.
"I asked the man why he was pretending to be my grandfather and he smirked at my comment before he replied," she paused for a breath,"he said that my family is in debt to him and that I need to pay the price for what they have done."
"Wait I'm confused I thought he was actually your grandfather.." Aidan realised that the refreshing sound of the ocean had distracted him for a moment.
"Aidan are you listening to me? I thought I had your whole attention." She huffed and placed her hands in the sand in an attempt to distract herself.
"Sorry, you do now." Aidan pouted at Lunetta and so caught his gaze before she continued.
"The room we were in was decorated with photos of my parents. They looked so happy and cheerful; ones I've never seen before. I was so captivated by them all. He pointed to a picture of my parents and then the photograph burst into a bundle of flames." Lunetta's breathing became panicked and short, " This point was almost the end of my dream but the man said one last thing to me before I woke up."
Aidan tried to grab her eye line but Lunetta wouldn't allow herself to look at him, "What did he say Lunes?" Aidan begged her to finish the dream so they could move on.
"He said... he told me that ... the man in my dream said that the person that I was in debt to ... was you Addy." Her eyes filled with a fresh layer of tears as she turned her whole body away from him.
"What do you mean?" Her words had stung Aidan straight to the core and a confused expression was exposed across his face.
"I don't know Addy, but I think that there's more to the story between you and me than meets the eye and it terrifies me." She wiped off another tear from her cheek before it joined the rest of the stream which was dripping down her chin.
"It was jus a dream Lunes," Aidan qualified," It doesn't mean anything."
Well atleast that's what Aidan tried to convince himself; every time they felt so realistic.
"I don't think so Addy, my abuelo always told me that you learn the most about yourself and your past from your dreams; it's your inner spirit interacting with those around it." Lunetta slowly rocked herself to remain calm.
"Lunetta I would never hurt you, you know that." Aidan's voice broke as he could see how pained she was from her sub-conscious thinking last night.
"I know Addy, but I'm scared about what your capable of."
