12; ready, aim, fire 🌸
I ran all the way to the locker room when I received the text from Taehyung, saying that there was an emergency meeting happening at the moment. I didn't care what my hair looked like as I tried to catch up with my breath in the doorway of the locker room. Jimin casually walked in behind me, pulling me to sit down beside him. I looked around when I finally had enough air to breathe back into my lungs. Everybody was present except for the coach.
"What's the meeting for?" I nudged Jimin's arm. "And why is coach not here?"
"I called for this meeting. He doesn't know about this." Jungkook said, looking displeased again.
"Why?"
"Coach told me yesterday that he's putting someone new in the team." Jungkook stared right into my eyes as he said this in the most intimidating tone.
"What?!" I exclaimed, "Is that even possible? We're like three months away from the opening season. This doesn't make sense."
"Nothing made sense ever since you joined the team." Jungkook grumbled, sitting across me with Hoseok beside him. The others looked surprisingly calm.
"It's not her fault that this is happening." Hoseok came to my defense, or so I thought, "Nor is it anyone's fault. Things just turned out this way."
"So are you saying that this is okay with you?" Jin turned on Hoseok, the tension was building up quickly, "It's obvious that the school is turning us into a joke. First is a girl in an all male baseball team. No offense, Vee, but I'm really not fine with how our team is now. If there's anyone here who wants to add something, now is the perfect time to fess up."
Taehyung slightly raised his arm up, turning heads to his direction, "Uh, I might be bisexual.. I like girls but I like boys sometimes too."
"We know that already." Yoongi groaned, rolling his eyes at him. "You think we don't know why you're so touchy sometimes?"
"That's not the problem here." Namjoon intervened. "I'm not trying to be biased here but I am with Hoseok on this."
"Who's the new guy?" Yoongi brought up, now all the attention was in Jungkook again, including mine.
"His name is Mark Tuan." Jungkook and I met gazes as he said this.
He knew I had a history with Mark and he's thinking that this is happening because of me. Well, it does involve me but I didn't make him do it.
"I know him!" Jimin exclaimed from his seat, "He's that famous guy."
"Why do you keep telling the most obvious things?" Jin rolled his eyes at the younger team member, making him frown. I didn't like his attitude. The first time I saw him I knew he couldn't be trusted with any secrets. "Anyway, what do we do about it? Make him want to quit the team?"
Jungkook withdrew his gaze from mine and back to the team, "I don't want anyone doing anything. We're not that kind of a team. Is everything clear?"
"Then what's the point of this meeting?" Taehyung groaned. "You made me miss lunch for this. It's pudding day today."
"It's for you guys to know who you should aim your guns at." Jungkook said, looking back at me. "There's a reason for every human action just as there's always a person behind the trigger."
I glared back at him the whole time. He did this on purpose to get in my head. He knows that Mark is doing this because of me and, obviously, he's not happy about it. I thought I had cleared things up with that guy. I thought I got the message clear through his thick skull. I was so annoyed as we all head back on our own business. I just wanted to play baseball. How did everything become this complicated?
Someone yanked me back all of a sudden, making me lift my head up, my thoughts finally returning to earth. I looked at the person's face and found out that the hand on my arm belonged to none other than Jung Hoseok. I didn't realize that I was so close to falling on the stairs until he pulled me back.
"Look where you're going, will you? You make me worry sometimes." Hoseok said with a concerned expression. I stared at him, wondering why it's always him who finds me in the my most troubled moments. "Hey, you okay?"
I blinked twice when I realized I had been staring at him for awhile. I diverted my gaze away from his face and onto the floor. "Sorry. Um, yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for looking out for me."
"Don't mention it." He said. I couldn't take my eyes off his contagious smile. "Oh I take that back. A kiss in return would be nice."
He tapped his finger against his cheek as he leaned down while I just stood there. Hoseok grinned, "I'm kidding. Smile a bit, will you? That serious look on your face scares me." He added, "Sometimes, I wonder if Jungkook has gotten to you already but don't you ever think of quitting, you got it?"
A smile tugged on the corners of my lips, "I got it. Thanks."
"It's nothing. You keep thanking me. You're making me feel flustered." Hoseok joked and I chuckled. The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch break. "Gotta run now. See you later at practice?"
"Yeah." I told him with a smile.
"Make sure to look where you're going, okay?" He reminded as he walked backwards, away from me. I nodded and watched him send me a smile again before hurrying to his class.
There wasn't any sign of the teacher when I got back to my classroom but Jungkook was there on his seat and so was Mark. They both looked at me. Jungkook looked away first. I sat down on my respective seat and thought about what to do next. Should I confront Mark or Jungkook? The question remained unanswered until the end of classes. I decided to put it off until later, adding another sleepless night into the list.
🌸
I went to practice as usual, taking everything off my mind and just focusing on what I had to do. It felt nice to run away from my problems but I know it's going to haunt me back at the end of the day when I'm lying down on my bed.
I'm still training with Jungkook and today he's being extremely unbearable than usual. God, I want to strangle him! He's testing my patience, trying to see how much of his attitude I could take. Why is being a girl such a problem for him?
"Can't you even do this properly? Where's your head at right now?" Jungkook scolded me when I wasn't fast enough to score a run, resulting to our team losing a point.
"Where's yours at? Oh yeah, in your ass." I grumbled under my breath as I stood myself up, dusting off my pants.
"Take ten everyone. Get out of the field and let's cool off for a bit." I heard the coach say, immediately the game stopped.
Everyone took their water bottles or wiped their sweat with their towels. I sat as far away as possible from Jungkook because I don't know what I might do to him if I hear another insult from him again.
Namjoon sat beside me, tapping my shoulder once and said, "You seem off. What's wrong?"
"I'm sorry. I'm just not in the best condition today." I told him, leaning forward with my elbows propped on my knees and my head in my hands. "Sorry for distracting you guys."
"Nah, you weren't a distraction." He shrugged his shoulders, "Well, you were actually because, you know, you look pretty when you're so into the game."
I gave him a smile, "Thanks."
"I just came to cheer you up." Namjoon returned my smile. "
We continued off with the practice game. My head cooled off as long as I don't encounter another confrontation with that person. He's just too much today. We shuffled players for the fourth game. Jungkook was on the other team with Hoseok, Taehyung, and some of the juniors. On my team was Yoongi, Jin, Namjoon and Jimin.
Taehyung took his place on the batting plate, a tight grip around the bat's handle. He swung in the air twice as a warm up before the game started off with Yoongi's first pitch. The ball made a loud clunk when it came into contact with the bat, flying across the field in a perfect trajectory. Taehyung has been in good condition since the start of practice.
Our heads turned to where the ball, calculating a rough assumption on where it would land, while Jungkook was already running to third base. I ran further to the back, determined to get Jungkook out of the game. I didn't look anywhere but at the ball over my head, running after it and completely neglecting my surroundings. My expression gave me away when I twisted my ankle on something carved on the ground. In just seconds, a painful scream tore from my throat which made everyone halt.
My knees cushioned my fall as I rolled on my side to cradle my injured leg. I saw someone running over to where I was but I didn't recognize who it was because my tears were already blurring my sight. His arms hooked themselves under my thighs and in an instant, I was lifted up from the ground and was held up against his chest. I didn't need to see his face to know it was him, I knew him very well by the sound of his voice.
"I know it hurts but can you hang on a little bit longer until I get you help." Jungkook said while rushing me past the rest of the guys and inside the building. I nodded in his chest, biting my lip to prevent myself from crying out in pain.
Luckily, Jungkook was fast enough as he carried me to the infirmary. The school nurse was just about to leave for the day. They both settled me on the clinic bed. The nurse carefully assessing my swollen ankle before she treated it with an ice compression over my foot. She elevated my affected leg and told me to rest for awhile before I could go.
"A sprained ankle would usually take a few weeks to heal but if you're careful not to strain it too much. It would hasten your recovery." She explained, while bandaging my foot and getting me an ankle brace, "Wear this for a few weeks until your ankle is fully healed. Does it still hurt?"
"A bit." I croaked out.
"Tell the truth." Jungkook said. He stood beside me. "It hurts a lot."
"Okay. It does." I added, wincing a bit as I put my foot down on the ground carefully.
"Don't worry. I'll give you painkillers but you can only take one tablet and then if you still feel pain, you can take another one after 4-6 hours from the first tablet." The nurse instructed, handing me one tablet and writing me a prescription of the same pain medications so I can buy them from the pharmacy.
Jungkook helped me walk by holding me against him, my arm over his shoulder while his other hand held me by my waist. I know he's watching my face but, for some unknown reason, I couldn't look him in the eye. We walked in silence as we descended the stairs. It was only when we were almost out the building that I regained my voice again.
"You confuse me so much, Jungkook." I told him while looking up at his face, "One hundred percent of the time you're always so mean to me. You do all sorts of things to get me out of the team, throw all kinds of insults at me, but you're, also, always the first one to save me. It's confusing me."
Jungkook stopped and so did I, he looked down at my face and told me with a face not tainted with the slightest hint of hate, "You confuse me too. I don't know why but you do."
