Chapter Twenty-Two ♚ The Case of the Missing Lifeguard

AN: Blake's outfit's are up top. The outfit with the jeans is what she changes into.

El, Max and Blake were sitting in the telekinetic girl's room, listening to music and munching on pizza. Max was walking around the room, singing along into a slice of pizza as Blake laughed, jumping on the bed next to El, who was looking at a magazine with Ralph Macchio on it.

"So, the Karate Kid, huh?" Blake smirked as Eleven smiled. Max looked over, saying, "Ralph Macchio is great."

"Macchio?" El questioned and Max's eye's brightened as she said, "Yeah, like Blake said, the Karate Kid," She brought her hand up and pretended to karate chop the magazine, "Hai-yah!"

The three girls laughed and Max said, "He's so hot, right? I bet he's an amazing kisser, too," El gave her a look and she sat on the bed, "Hey, uh, is Mike a good kisser?"

"I don't know," Eleven blushed, "He's my first boyfriend."

Max nodded, "Ex-boyfriend."

El's eyes went soft and Blake wrapped an arm around her shoulders, saying, "I wouldn't worry too much, Ellie. Mike will realize that he's an idiot and crawl right back, begging for you to forgive his sorry ass."

"Agreed," Max smirked, "I guarantee you, him and Lucas are, like, totally wallowing in self-pity and misery right now."

Blake's heart stung for a moment, thinking about her boy's being in pain but shook it off, watching as Max's facial features turned into one of crying, saying, "They're like, "Oh, I hope they take us back"."

The two younger girls laughed and the red-head said, "God, what I wouldn't give to see their stupid faces."

The Hopper siblings looked at one another, Blake wrinkling her nose at El and the girl squealed, running off the bed and going to the radio to turn it off the channel. Max's eye's widened as El sat on the floor, grabbing a black bandanna and said, "What?"

"There's a way we can see what they're doing," Blake told, laying on the bed and eating a slice of pizza. She turned on her side, holding her head in her hand as Max looked at El, saying, "Is this really gonna work?"

EL nodded and Max said, "Holy shit, this is insane."

Blake used her foot to nudge the girl and she immediately stopped. After a minute Blake sat up, looking at her sister as she said, "She's in."

"How do you-" El cut Max off, "I see them."

Max looked at Blake, who only winked, and then jumped off the bed, going next to El and said, "What are they doing?"

"Eating," Eleven answered, watching as Mike laid on the couch and ate some chips. It was quiet for moment and Blake finished her pizza, sitting up on the bed, saying, "What are they saying, Ellie?"

"They say we are "species"," She told and Blake's eye's narrowed as Max said, "What?"

"Emotion, not logic."

Blake humorlessly chuckled, clenching her fists as she said, "I swear to everything that is holy, I did not spend four years of my life with these boy's, teaching them how to respect women, for them to say this shit."

El suddenly took the blindfold off and Max rose a brow, "What?"

The girl suddenly burst into giggles and Max joined her, Blake smiling at the girls before a car driving up was heard. The two girls stopped laughing when the door was burst open and a voice was heard, "Hey! Hey! When I say three inches, three-"

The bedroom door swung opened and the three girls looked at Hopper wide-eyed. Max shook her head, "Do you knock? Jeez!"

"Yeah! Jeez," El repeated. Hopper sniffed, glancing between the girls, "Oh, hey. I'm sorry. I thought that, uh-"

"-Mike's not here," Max interrupted. Eleven nodded, smiling as she said, "Max wanted to have a... a sleepover. Is that... okay?"

Hopper looked at Blake, who narrowed her eyes at him and nodded, the man also nodding and saying, "Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Your parents know about it?"

"Yup," The red-head shook her head. Hopper began slurring and Blake bit the inside of her cheek, cutting him off by standing up and saying, "Girls, we are going to leave you two alone. Have fun tonight and we'll see you tomorrow."

Blake bent down and kissed El's head, doing the same with Max before shutting the door and letting out a low growl, saying, "You're drunk."

"I... I didn't mean to," Hopper hiccuped and Blake shook her head, saying, "You promised."

"I know, but-" Blake cut him off, pointing at El's door as she sneered, "No, but's. You promised that night when we brought my sister home that you wouldn't come home drunk anymore. That would be the father she needs and deserves," Tears filled her eyes, "You promised me it would be different from when I was her age, Dad."

Hopper sighed, going over to the kitchen and dumped the wine from the restaurant he left, looking at Blake before he said, "I didn't mean to break my promise. Joyce stood me up and I reacted. I'm sorry, kid."

"I guess I can forgive you," Blake pointed a finger, sitting on the couch, "But only if you get my stash of KitKat's out of the fridge and watch a western with me."

Hopper's somber look turned into a happy one, his smile going ear to ear and saying, "Like the good old days?"

"Like the good old days."

The next morning, Blake was sipping on a cup of coffee as she read El's note on the fridge when the phone rang. She groaned, setting her mug down and picked up the phone, saying, "Why are you calling so early?"

"Blake?" Will's voice rang out. The girl opened her green eye's slightly, a small smile on her face as she leaned on the wall, "Hey, bubba. What's up?"

"Do you think you could stop by Mike's house before you go to work?" He questioned and Blake furrowed her brows, saying, "Sure, Will. Is everything okay?"

She heard Will sniff over the phone, "I just miss everyone being together. Can you please just come?"

"Of course, bubba. I'll be there soon, okay?" Blake softened. Will sadly smiled over the phone, "Thank you."

The boy quickly hung up and Blake did the same, going over to her room and getting ready. She walked out of her room, yelping when she saw her father in just a towel.

Blake covered her eyes, saying, "What the fuck, dad? Where are your clothes?"

"Where are your clothes?" Hopper challenged, looking at the girls shorts, "No daughter of mine is wearing those in public."

Blake deadpanned, taking her hand from her eyes and said, "You do know that I wear a bathing suit in front of hundreds of people everyday, correct?"

Hopper didn't say anything and Blake walked past him, quickly drinking the rest of her coffee before she went to the door. She opened the door, barely missing Mrs. Byer's fist when she went to knock and Blake said, "Holy shit."

"Blake! I'm so sorry," Joyce gasped. Blake looked between the two parents, letting out a small laugh before saying, "Well, isn't this awkward at all. I'm just gonna go... good luck."

The girl quickly left, jumping in her car and started it, her music erupting from the speakers as she threw her bag in the passenger seat and drove off.

Meanwhile, Max and Eleven were walking back to the red-head's house, El wanting to go check after seeing Billy in the void the previous night. Max groaned, hearing the thunder rumbling as she said, "It's gonna start pouring soon. We should have had Blake drive to the mall or, like, watching a movie or something."

"You don't believe me?" El questioned, turning to her new friend. Max shook her head, "I believe you saw some super weird stuff, totally, but you said Mike has sensed you in there before, right?" El nodded, "So maybe it was just like that. Maybe Billy just... sensed you somehow."

"But the screams," The brunette insisted. Max let out a long breath, "Yeah, I know, but here's the thing. When Billy is alone with a girl, they make like, really crazy noises."

El's eye's widened, "Blake and Steve do too. Do you think they're in trouble?"

"Only if Hopper catches them," Max murmured before going back to a normal voice, "No, they're not in trouble, they're like... happy screams."

"Happy screams? What is happy screams?" She questioned. Max cringed, not knowing how to answer her questions, "I'm just gonna lend you my mom's Cosmo."

The arrived at Max's house and the said girl sighed, saying, "His car's not here," She turned to El, "You really want to do this?"

El nodded and they made their way in the house, going straight to Billy's dirty room making Max cringe, "Why do I get the feeling we're gonna find all kinds of wrong in here?"

The stereo was lowly playing heavy metal and El tilted her head to the side as she looked around before going to the bathroom. She flipped the light on and went over to the shower, her heart dropping into her stomach as she saw it filled with water and empty bags of ice.

"Max?" She questioned. The said girl walked over, following her gaze and picked up the floating bag, saying, "Ice. It's just ice. Probably for his muscles or something. He works out like a maniac."

El's breath began to tremble, her stomach twisting in knots as she glanced around the room, her gaze falling on the cupboard under the sink that had blood on it. She walked over, opening it up before taking the trash can out that was inside.  Max furrowed her brows, "El, what is it?"

The girl pulled out a red fanny pack, Max's eye's widening when she read the white words saying "lifeguard" across the top. El then pulled out a yellow bloodied whistle, her chin quivering as she turned to Max to show her and said, "It looks like Blake's."

The said girl had just pulled up to the Wheeler's house to see Mike and Will in the driveway, the two looking like they were fighting. Blake turned off the car, running out of the car and over to them as Mike said, "It's not my fault you don't like girls."

"Michael Wheeler!" Blake yelled, both boys looking over at her to see her clothes and hair dripping wet, "What the fuck is wrong with you? Why would you say that to him?"

"I'm not trying to be a jerk. Okay?" He turned back to Will to see the boy with tears in his eyes, "But we're not kids anymore. I mean, what did you think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? We were just gonna sit in  my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?"

"Yeah," Will angrily said, "I guess I did. I really did."

The boy got on his bike and Blake stepped toward him, trying to grab him but he pushed her away, "Go away, Blake."

"Will, just let me drive you-" Will interrupted her, "I said go away, Blake!"

Blake immediately stepped back, letting the boy go off in the rain and turned to Mike, scoffing as she said, "What is wrong with you, Wheeler?"

"Nothing-"

"-Bullshit!" Blake yelled, Mike's eyes going wide, "Do you not realize what you just said to him? How much of a douchebag you are being? What a dick you are being to everyone in this party?" She slapped her hands on her thighs, "He did he even get the chance to tell you that Joyce put the house on the market?"

Mike's jaw dropped and he let out a gasp, "Will's moving?"

"Yeah, but I guess you didn't know that because you're too busy swapping saliva with my little sister to know that your best friend since kindergarten is moving," Blake darkly told, "Did you ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe, Will wanted to play D&D with you guys because that is the only thing that make's him feel normal since all of this shit happened?"

The raven-haired boy looked down at his feet, audibly gulping and Blake shook her head, "You are not the Mike Wheeler I know. Mike, you were like my brother," She teared up, "And now I don't even recognize you," Blake wiped her face, taking a step back, "Call the people who care about you when you get your head out of your ass."

Blake quickly made her way back to her car, letting out a cry as she drove out of the driveway. She felt as though her heart was broken. Her boys were growing apart- and in turn, that meant that they were growing apart from her.

And that's what hurt.

Blake hadn't smiled in four years when she met those boys. They brought happiness back into her life and knowing that they weren't going to be around anymore, it killed her.

The girl wiped the wet hair out of her face, her chin quivering as she drove down the road to the mall. Half of her knew she should go find Will... but the other half screamed at her to go to Steve and have him hold her.

The selfish part eventually won and she made her way to the mall, slinging her bag over her wet clothes and ran into the mall making her leave water tracks as she walked through the long hall.

Blake ignored all the stares of everyone, walking over to Scoops Ahoy when she saw Steve and Dustin in the planters. She sniffed, furrowing her brows, "Steve?"

"Blake?" The boy questioned when he had turned around and saw her red face and dripping body. He walked over, immediately wrapping her arms around her wet frame making her let out a small cry when he said, "Baby, what's wrong?"

"I just want it back to the way they were," She sniffled, wrapping her arms around his waist. Steve slightly bent down, picking her up and she rested her head in his neck as he said, "What happened?"

Blake looked at him, hair stuck to her forehead and said, "The boys. They're growing apart... and I should have worked harder to keep them together."

"Blake," A new voice uttered, the girl turning to see Dustin standing there. Steve put her down as Dustin made his way over to the girl, hugging her tightly before saying, "This is not your fault. You couldn't have known this was going to happen."

Dustin pulled back first and Blake gave him a small grin, "When did you get so grown up on me, curly fry?"

"At camp. You would be amazed the things you learn."

An hour later, Blake was calmed down and in a new change of clothes, the girl always keeping an outfit in her bag in case she went over to Steve's. The said boy looked over at her as Dustin had a pair of binoculars pressed to his eyes and gave her a look before saying, "Is that my shirt?"

"You left it on my floor and didn't ask for it back. That makes it mine now," Blake pressed a finger against his chest. Steve laughed, happy that she was feeling better and took her hand that was on his chest, lacing their fingers together as he said, "Well, it looks better on you than it does on me."

"You sound like a guy in a cheesy romance movie," Blake inferred and Steve rolled his eyes, saying, "You love those-"

"-Shh!" Blake's eyes widened, "That's between you and me, okay? And El, but she doesn't tell anyone."

Dustin suddenly smacked Steve's arm, the boy groaning as the younger one said, "Target acquired."

"Where?" Steve gasped. Dustin passed him the binoculars, "Ten o'clock. Sam Goody's."

The brunette boy took them from Dustin's hands and Blake crossed her arms over her chest, saying, "You two are idiots. Do you really think," She lowered her voice, putting her head in between the boys, "That secret, highly intelligent, Russian agents will be so easy to spot?"

"Duffle bag," Steve whispered and then turned to Dustin, moving his head a bit to see him over Blake's head, as they both said, "Evil Russian."

"Did neither of you hear what I just said?" Blake questioned. Neither of the boy's said anything and they walked away making Blake scoff, "Well now I know how it feels to be my dad."

Blake walked to the escalator behind them, pushing their way though the people to follow the man. Dustin watched as Steve went in between two women, "Slow down."

"We're losin' him," Steve told and Blake groaned, saying, "Well my little legs can't go this fast."

"You're getting too close," Dustin insisted as Steve shoulder checked someone, the man groaning as he said, "Watch it, dickwad."

"Fuck you, shit for brains!" Blake flipped him off. Dustin's eye's widened, taking her hand down and scolding her, "Blake!"

Blake just gave him a look before Steve roughly pushed her against the wall and slammed his lips to hers. She squeaked against the taller man, grabbing onto his shirt before she kissed him back while he trailed his fingers down her sides before landing on her belt loops.

After a moment, Steve pulled back, Blake breathing heavily as she said, "I'm not complaining or anything... but what the hell was that?"

"He turned around," Dustin simply said from the front of the plant that the couple was hiding behind. Steve held onto her by her belt loops, the girl having to look up to see her boyfriend, "We had to act like we weren't following him."

"So you threw me against a wall and made out with me?" Blake questioned, stunned. Steve shrugged, a smirk on his face, "It's the first thing I thought of."

Dustin shook his head, "I don't even wanna know," He turned back to see the man walking away again, "Target is leaving."

The trio followed the unidentified man closely and hid behind a pillar when he walked into the jazzercise gym. Blake immediately began laughing as the man opened his duffle bag, taking out a boom box. The man stripped out of his sweater and the women in the room began cheering as Steve and Dustin's face turned into one's of confusion.

"Hey, Harrington?" Blake narrowed her eyes at him, seeing him watch the group of women in leotards with his jaw dropped. Steve hummed and Blake grabbed his hair, twisting his head around and began walking away making him yelp, "Ow, hair. Ow, hair. Ow, hair."

"Keep looking and you'll never be able to push me against a wall again" She told, letting go of him and walking away from the boy. Steve's eye's grew wide, "I'm sorry!"

He ran over to the girl, Dustin laughing before he followed a few people behind. Steve grabbed Blake's hand, kissing her knuckles as they walked onto the escalator, "I'm sorry, KitKat. I was looking at the guy I swear."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better, Harrington?" Blake chuckled and Steve's eyes went wide, realizing what he had just said. He stammered, "Shit, I didn't mean it like that. I-I was jus- just trying to tell you that I only have eyes for you. I'm not- I'm not gay."

Blake laughed, bringing a hand up to pat his cheek as she said, "You're lucky you're pretty, Harrington."

"You think I'm pretty?" Steve smirked, taking her hand and kissing her palm before they walked off the escalator. Blake narrowed her eyes, saying, "Don't push it."

"You guys are gross," Dustin commented, catching up with them. Blake simply shrugged as they made their way into Scoops Ahoy, Steve seeing Robin and saying, "You're not gonna believe who Dustin thought was a Russian."

The two began arguing and Robin rushed past the trio, Blake raising a brow before following her. Robin stood up on a bench and Blake looked up at her, crossing her arms over her chest as she said, "Whatcha doin' up there, Ro?"

Robin began repeating the code they had translated over and over again and Blake followed her gaze all over the place. She gasped, understanding what Robin was getting at and said, "Holy shit."

"Robin?" Steve questioned, coming up behind Blake with Dustin, "What are you doing?"

"I cracked it."

Steve gave her a look, "Cracked what?

The Scoops Ahoy employee put out a hand and Blake took it, helping her balance so she could jump down. Robin smirked at Blake's boyfriend, saying, "I cracked the code."

"You know, it's," Blake looked at her watch that was covered in water from the rain, "Eight thirty-seven. I could be reading a book or something right now."

"You're such a nerd," Dustin groaned making Blake flip him off. Robin shook her head in her raincoat, "Look for Imperial Panda and Kaufman Shoes."

Steve wiped his face, his hair sticking all over his face making Blake sigh, saying, "Thank you for letting me use your jacket."

"You are so paying me back," He told and Blake laughed, leaning forward and kissed his water covered lips. She pulled back, a smile on her face and said, "And now you have officially kissed someone in the rain."

Her boyfriend chuckled as a man came out, whistling and pushing a cart with boxes piled high. Dustin sniffed, "They're with that whistling guy, ten o'clock."

"What do you think's in there?" Steve questioned. His friend shrugged, saying, "Guns, bombs?"

"Chemical weapons?" Robin added. Blake nodded her head, "A new virus to cause biological warfare?"

Steve glanced at her, "Well isn't that pleasant."

"Whatever it is, they're armed to the teeth," The younger boy explained. The thunder clapped again and the Harrington boy wiped his face again, saying, "Great. That's great."

The doors suddenly opened and Robin's eyes grew wide as she said, "Hey, what's in there?"

"It's just more boxes," He observed through the rain. Steve leaned over Blake and grabbed the binoculars from him, saying, "Let me check it out."

They began fighting and Blake rolled her eyes before Dustin smacked them against the railing, a loud thud echoing through the vicinity. The group of teens ducked down, Steve lacing his fingers with Blake's as she flipped over and landed half way on his chest.

More thunder erupted from the sky as men speaking Russian were heard and Blake whispered, "They're saying stay here and to watch the door."

Blake crawled off Steve, grasping onto his hand while telling the two boys and Robin that they had to go. They quickly ran off, making their way back to the hidden back way to Scoops Ahoy.

"I think we found your Russians."

AN: I felt the need to make Blake yell at Mike. I love the boy, but, jeez.
