Chapter 8
Elsewhere in the Black Forest, Barbara has found a cave that belongs to Hob Goblin. Luckily for her, she used a lantern to see through the dark cave were shattered skulls of different shapes and sizes scattered around the cave. What really surprised her was that the goblin had some decent looking furniture in his home. Some of the decorations were ancient artifacts. There were different kinds of charms, talismans and scriptures, even one of the artifacts that were displayed seemed vaguely familiar to the monobrowed messenger.
"That's odd..." she came in closer, shedding light to what she had found, "that looks like one of the cursed jars that I read on one of my grandmother's books." Barbara said, her mouth agape. "How on Earth did he manage to obtain it? I thought they were all destroyed!" Or so she thought. "I would have never expected him to be a collector." Barbara said as she tried to touch the jar but an unknown force blew her away, throwing her in the air. Airborn, she dropped the crate and the lantern. The latern fell unto the table, breaking the glass as the wooden furniture was lit ablaze, burning. The crate crashed into a stalagmite, the wooden crate splintered open and broke upon impact revealing a shiny object as it glistened thanks to the lighting of the firewood while Barbara fell to a steep pond within the cave, landing head first into the water, the head and her back soaked with the murky water, screaming in pain.
After settling down from his fit of rage, Marvin had figured out a way to buy himself some time to avoid Hob Goblin. He got out of his caravan and closed the door as he looked through his surroundings before he went away looking for the cave. Marvin wore the invisibility cloak as a camouflage to avoid being spotted for the time being. Amidst the rustling of bushes, Hob Goblin came out hiding and walked towards the caravan, opening the door as he sneaked inside Marvin's property. From what he could see, was that Marvin stored a lot of products, knick knacks, amulets, dreamcatchers, and an iron bar that hanged a lot of wardrobe. He is still a hoarder. Hob thought before he walked four paces closer when he stepped on a wire that activated a trap that the merchant set up, a log fell before the goblin punched it as it broke in half.
Barbara winced from the pain as she sat up and saw the table burning. "Oh, crud." She muttered before she stood up and relaxed her muscles and stretched her arms before turning towards the puddle behind her and closed her eyes. Arms outstretched above the puddle and casted a spell.
"Water stuck in this dark cave, rise from this shallow puddle." The murky water rose in an undulated form, reaching to her height. "Reaching higher and higher, soothing all of my troubles." The body of water hovered over her head as it's liquid mass increased nearly forming an arc, with a wave of a hand it followed her movements. "Extinguish all this fire with a splash of a cold wave." With her eyes closed she focused on the warmth of the fire and locked on towards her objective. "I now pray... fire... BEGONE!" The body of water lunged itself unto the burning table, dousing the piece of burnt wood as it was put out with a steamy murmur. When she opened her eyes, she realized her mistake when she eliminated the only source of light. "Great... just my luck. I'm cold and soaking wet, and all I see now is darkness."
"A log? Is that the best he could do?" He queried without knowing that each side of the log fell to activate the second phase of Marvin'a trap: one log landed on a balance that launched a metallic sphere in the air while the other log toppled over miscellaneous items, the metal sphere landed on a plank and it rolled down to push a glass vase and it fell on the floor breaking into pieces while the miscellaneous items that fell in a pile were becoming larger and heavier, medium-sized totem poles, barrels and a suit of armor. When it fell with a battle axe, it nearly cut off Hob Goblin's head. He ran faster to dodge poison darts and jump over a flinty tiki head that was large as a bear. As he landed feet first to the wooden floor like a gymnist and stood up, hyperventilating from the adrenaline.
At the cave, Barbara was as blind as a bat without echolocation to detect her surroundings. She walked forward as she felt the damp ground beneath her feet. The downside of walking barefoot is that you feel the pain of a sharp object when you step on it. She yelped in pain when she stepped on a splinter and hopped on one foot. The charm that she wore lit up without knowing. She held unto the oblong metal that held the gem and turned it to show the light to were she focused her injury and saw the broken pieces of the crate before spotting a precious metal that glistened from the light. She walked toward the shiny item and lifted it up to reveal a goblet that had a carvin of a goblin's face.
Hob Goblin laughed. "Nice try, Nimrod! It will take a lot more than that to stop the mighty Hob-" he stepped on a bear trap as it snapped it's metallic maw above his right ankle, releasing a loud wail that was heard throughout the forest.
You gotta be jesting! I'm risking my life for this?! "Why I oughta-" her train of thought was interrupted by a blood-curdling scream.
"GAAAAAAAAHHH!!!"
"What was that?" Barbara muttered.
"I finally got him." Marvin smirked before he entered into the cave laughing as he brought a gas lamp with him, passing by the BEGONE sign that had a skull on top of the sign and hands clinging on the edges of the sign.
As she spotted a source of light that came inside the, she saw a familiar face.
"What took you so long?!" She fumed.
