Chapter 10

Barbara abandoned the cave to return to Marvin's caravan as she ignored him.

"Come on Barb, don't shun me." He tried to reason with her but she didn't want to hear him. She covered wet hair with her humid hood. He was about to prod further when he saw that the door of his caravan was open. Huh? He directed his attention towards his home, he expected that his traps would work against Hob Goblin, but he didn't expect him to escape.

Barbara entered first as she witnessed the mess that was on display, miscellaneous items scattered on the floor, a broken vase smashed into pieces, barrils and sculptures toppled over, and the suit of armor that was proudly displayed within the caravan laid on the ground with an area of the floorboards chopped off by the axe. When he entered, his body stiffened and he shouted. "My shop!" He dashed past the cluttering mess and checked if the goblin was there.

"What a mess." She commented.

Marvin looked out to the other side adjacent to the trail of trinkets and doodads that were on the floor along with other products.

"My crystal ball, it's gone!" He shouted.

"Now you know how it feels to be fooled." She remarked.

"That tears it!!! He can taunt me, he can mock me, he can threaten me as many times as he wants, he can get away with smashing my shop. But no one. No one steals my crystal ball and gets away with it. This time, it's personal!" He bellowed, his face grimaced darkly, and glared, his eyes as feral as a feline.

"Now now Mrs. Corretjer, there is no need to get angry. I was just stating my opinion." The lad clarified.

"I agree with the woman, we already have enough tricksters in this village. Starting with the old hag who lives near the cemetery." Charles commented.

"That woman is still alive?!" Elizabeth replied in bewilderment.

"Yea, she's still alive, only God knows how she does it." Charles replied.

Still resorting to witchcraft no doubt. She thought. "I really must be going, it was a really kind gesture of your part to help me." Elizabeth acknowledged, expressing her gratitude towards the young lad.

"I wish I could have done more to help." He insisted.

"Nonsense, you did all that you could." She assured him.

"Let me take you home, it's the least I can do." He offered, raising his gas lamp.

"Or..." Charles drawled before they laid their eyes on him. "You can stay at the inn, free of charge." The young lad stiffened at his boss's request.

"That is very nice of you Charles, but I really must be-" the lad laid a hand on her shoulder.

"Please consider the offer, Mrs. Corretjer." He persuaded her.

"Donovan-" He leaned in closer.

"Please, I beg you. He's getting desperate, I'll sneak you out when he falls asleep." Donovan whispered into her ear.

"Alright, I'll stay." She chirruped as they plastered a smile on their faces.

"You will?" Charles asked in astonishment.

"Of course." She agreed for Donovan's sake. Montgomery smiled before he dashed to give a grand gesture to show her the room she will be staying.

"Right this way." Charles showed the rustic looking staircase. Elizabeth walked up the stairs before Charles and Donovan followed her.

Hob Goblin laughed when he saw Marvin lose his marbles through the crystal ball. He hadn't had a good laugh in years, the goblin already put his provisions into the ground and he already threw out the burnt chunks of wood that he found no doubt that the merchant would come into the cave any second now.

"HOB!" Marvin bellowed as he stormed in with a gas lamp in hand.

"Well look who finally showed up." The short goblin smirked with hands behind his back.

"Hand me my crystal ball." He gritted his teeth, with the invisibility cloak, Marvin looked like a floating head wearing a bead necklace with a floating arm, not that threatening in Hob's opinion.

"Oh, you mean this?" Hob Goblin showed the crystal ball on his left hand. "Tell me Marvin, why should I give it to you?" He asked, testing him.

"Because it belongs to me. And I wanted back." Marvin's face morphed into that of a shrouded beast.

"We all want a lot of things, but we don't always get what we want. So tell me... why should I return it to you when you don't have what I ordered?" He remarked.

Marvin's face reverted back to his natural form before he looked at Barbara and they nodded in agreement. Barbara approached the goblin, while he examined her movements though he couldn't see her face, no doubt that it was the protection charm's doing. It glisten as it shed light unto the crystal ball. He tried to see her face, though he could only see her chin and her bottom lip.

Meanwhile at Montgomery Inn, Dreadsville. A door opened to reveal the owner showing the guest the room that she would be staying for the night. When Elizabeth and Donovan entered, Charles lips tugged to a smile behind their backs.

"Would you like some tea?" Charles suggested.
"No thank you, that won't be necessary." Elizabeth replied with the most gentle tone that she could muster. Charles headed out of the room. "A second thought, perhaps I would like some tea." Elizabeth smiled at him. Charles left the room with a genuine smile on his face. They waited until Charles was out of earshot.

"I haven't seen him smile like that in a while." Donovan stated as he looked out the door. "Thank you, Mrs. Corretjer, it really means the world to him."

"Think nothing of it." Elizabeth said, waving it off like it was nothing.

"I'll go help him. Enjoy your stay." That was his cue to leave the room to prepare the tea while she sat on the bed and wait.

Barbara showed Hob Goblin the chalice that they delivered. He became furious. "You think that I would be foolish enough to accept this?!" Hob swatted the goblet off her hand threw the goblet to the ground. "I didn't pay a fortune to get a cheap imitation."

"Sorry pal, no refunds." Marvin retorted.

"MARVIN!!!" Barbara and Hob Goblin shouted in unison.

"I want the real one or so help me I'll break this thing to pieces!" Hob Goblin squeezed the crystal ball hard enough to show a crack.

"Alright! Alright! I'll give you your refund. Just don't-"

"SILENCE! You are in no terms to negotiate! I am not one of your foolish customers. I have you in my hands. You made a grave mistake challenging me. I will not be made a fool of! You have nine days to bring me the real chalice of the late Goblin King. Not the rwplica of that two-faced, backstabbing traitor." He declared, putting Barbara and Marvin on edge. "The goblet, for your lives. If you don't return by then, I will find you and kill you myself. Once I take back my refund from your cold dead hands, your little helper will suffer the same fate." Hob Goblin warned before he directed his gaze on Barbara and he approached her looking at her shrouded face.

"Believe me, that protective charm won't last for long." The goblin pointed at the at the olivine pendant Barbara wore around her neck. "Mark my words! HEADS. WILL. ROLL."
