Ch. 6 Saviours
Sua was drifting again. Sometimes she woke to complete darkness and sometimes she heard silent whispering around her.
The only thing constant was a soft beeping sound coming from a machine nearby. Was she in a hospital? she thought. But it was too quiet to be a hospital.
She heard faint footsteps approaching. A cool hand touched her forehead, probably checking her temperature. The hand then moved to her wrist and held for a minute. Another set of footsteps approached.
"Her colour has returned, I see" a soft musical voice said. "Well at least she doesn't look dead anymore." He added.
"Yes. Pretty, isn't she?" Someone closer to her answered probably the one with the soft hands.
She felt him slowly pull a strand of hair away from her face.
"Very" The musical voice said again.
"Careful now Jimin-ah. Don't go having a crush on her."
Sua heard laughter. It sounded like bells chiming. She didn't think she had ever heard a more beautiful sound. Was he an angel? Had she died? Is this heaven? She thought frantically. She tried to open her eyes to look at him but she couldn't and before she knew it she was drifting again.
~~~~~~~~~
Sua woke again to the sound of a door opening.
"Hyung" a deep voice called. "You should rest now. I'm sure she will be fine." He said
"I don't know Taehyung-ah. I think she was awake last night. She thrashed around I think, the I.V. was completely pulled out." A soft voice answered, laced with worry.
Had she? She couldn't remember. She tried opening her eyes again. Didn't work.
"Maybe I can stay with her again tonight?" The deep voice asked.
"Would you? Are you sure?"
"Yes. Maybe I'll read to her?"
"That sounds nice Taehyungie. I'm sure she would like that" he replied kindly.
"I'll just go grab a book from my room and be back in a minute"
Sua heard a soft chuckle from beside her. A hand brushed her hair again
"Feel better soon, jag-eun sae"
Little Bird? Did he just call her a little bird? She thought wretchedly.
But it didn't sound insulting in his soft voice as he whispered to her, it was more like an endearment. Maybe she liked it? She felt.... Safe. For the first time in a long time. She felt safe, she admitted.
"Jin-Hyung" the deep voice was back. "Go on. Rest well. I will stay with her now."
Sua heard someone approach and settle into a chair beside her. A large warm hand intertwined their fingers with her own. If she could move she would have stiffened at the sudden unfamiliar touch.
"Hello again beautiful. You feeling any better today?" the deep voice asked.
Again? Had he spoken to her before? She would have remembered the voice she thought.
A soft rustling sound of pages being turned reached her ears before the man cleared his throat.
"Until peonies bloom,
I'll still wait for my spring to come."
He read gently.
"When peonies drop their blossoms one by one,
I'll then be drowned in sorrows for my loss,
Spring's gone."
His voice and the beautiful poetry washed over her. She felt at peace.
"While peonies wither as they may,
With them my year's all gone.
Year round for the rest, All the way I'm weeping crestfallen,
Until peonies bloom,
I'll wait for, splendid but yet sorrowful spring to come."
Sua's heart sighed. Her demons put to rest as her mind drifted away again, bringing a peaceful sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Have you been here all night?" Sua heard a familiar voice ask.
"Yes." her deep voiced night companion replied.
"That's three times this week"
"I just feel very peaceful when I'm with her, Jungkookie" He said.
She felt the hand still holding hers tighten slightly.
She heard a chuckle. "Anyway, I have to leave again for a while. I just came by to say goodbye to you."
"Again? So soon?" he sounded heartbroken.
Sua wanted to sit up and hold him, protect him from any hurt or sadness. She was surprised at the sudden wave of protectiveness she felt towards this man with his deep but gentle voice and warm fingers that brought her strength and peace at the same time.
"I have business to attend to. I will come back in a week or two." Jungkook answered sincerely.
"Ok" Taehyung answered in a small voice.
She felt the other man approach her. His fingers lightly traced her jawline leaving a trail of warm heat spreading through her.
"She has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen, you know. Wish I could see them once again." He said wistfully.
"You will. Jin-Hyung says she should wake up any moment now."
The confidence in his voice and his words brought some much need comfort to Sua.
"I hope you are right, Taehyung-ah"
~~~~~~~~~~
A soft sigh awoke Sua after what felt like days. She felt a cool wet cloth being pressed against her forehead. The cloth then slid down the side of her face to her neck. The coolness felt good against her heated skin.
"Mhhmmm" she moaned.
The hand stilled. "Are you awake?" A sweet musical voice asked her. She tried to respond but the words came out as mush.
"If you can hear me, squeeze my hand." He said gently placing his hand in hers.
Sua pulled all the strength she could muster but only managed to lightly twitch her fingers.
There was a sharp intake of breath from him as his hand was pulled away from her.
"Jin-Hyung!!" Her angel called. "She's awake."
A few moments later she heard a bunch of footsteps quickly entering the room and approaching her. She could feel the warmth of bodies surrounding her as she slowly peeled her eyes open. At first the bright light above her hit her hard and she squinted.
"Yah! Dim the lights" someone barked an order.
Immediately the lights were dimmed and she was able to adjust her eyes to take in her surroundings. Six pairs of eyes were trained on her face. She tried to sit up. Instantly, two pairs of hands held her arms supporting her movement. One hand came up behind her and rested at the base of her neck helping her hold her head which felt heavy on her shoulders.
She looked at the boy standing right in front of her at the foot of her bed. His brows were furrowed with concern but she couldn't help but notice how beautiful his face was. His silver hair was parted in the middle so that it perfectly framed his soft features. She stared at him unable to look away and he stared right back.
Someone cleared their throat pointedly and he laughed, his eyes turning into two cute crescent moons on his face and his plump lips parted to reveal pearly white teeth. A musical giggly sound of wind chimes and bells filled the quiet room. Her angel, she thought. Recognition sparking behind her eyes.
"Cheon-sa" she croaked, her throat dry.
He laughed again. "Oh I'm no angel, sweetheart."
"Yah! Enough flirting." The man holding her head called out.
Sua quickly turned around to look at him and her head spun. She slumped.
All the men sprung into action. Laying her on the bed, one checking the monitor beeping beside her, while another checked her IV. The guy beside her quietly pulled on the stethoscope and placed it on her heart looking deep into her eyes.
He had kind eyes, she thought visibly relaxing under his steady gaze. Actually, she had felt better the moment she had laid down with her head on the pillow.
He smiled at her and she was surprised to realise how handsome he was too.
"You are ok." He announced. "Maybe you just moved too fast?" He enquired tilting his head to one side slightly.
"I'm Kim Seokjin" he said kindly "And these are my brothers" he waved his hand around indicating the five other men standing around her.
"Yoon Sua" she managed her throat still grating like sandpaper.
"Here." A deep voice she recognized called as a straw was brought to her lips. "Drink slowly with very small sips please." He instructed.
Sua sipped carefully, the cool water slowly healing her parched throat. She looked at him with gratitude. He smiled at her. His boxy grin made her heart stop.
What's with the abundance of handsomeness in this family, she thought to herself.
"I'm Kim Taehyung." He offered after noticing her stare.
She nodded.
As she continued to sip the water slowly, her gaze travelled to the rest of the group. They were all very handsome she noticed before her gaze rested on a familiar face and she sputtered coughing violently.
Min Yoongi! Her captor, she thought as her heartbeat increased making the monitor beside her bed screech in protest.
"Hey, what is it Jag-eun Sae? You are safe here. Calm down please." Jin pleaded.
But Sua couldn't hear him through the sharp ringing in her ears.
"Please just let me go. I will not say anything to anyone, I promise. Please let me go." She begged looking at Yoongi with tears in her eyes.
"Yah! Yoongi-ya!" Jin yelled looking at Yoongi. "Go away. You are scaring her. She needs to rest."
But Yoongi didn't move. He stared at her distressed face. She looked so small and frail, he thought. He had almost let her starve to death, his guilt choked him.
"Let's go, Hyung" her angel urged him.
Yoongi let Jimin lead him to the door but he turned around just before Jimin opened it.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left you without any food or water like that. It must have been terrifying for you. I hope you will forgive me, Yoon Sua. I will not hurt you, I promise. And when you get better, I'll let you go." Yoongi said quietly and then stepped out before Sua had a chance to reply.
Sua was still shaken. These were her captors not her saviors, she realized. They were murderers, thugs and whatever else that went with the territory of being a mafia gang.
Taehyung stepped close to her again offering the cup. "Do you want some more?" he asked tentatively.
She shook her head afraid to say anything. He must have picked up on the change in her view of them because his shoulders slumped slightly as if she had just rejected him personally and not just the water he offered. Her heart twinged slightly, looking at his sullen face. He was the boy who had read to every night keeping her demons at bay. Hadn't she felt protective of him just a while ago?
"You have such beautiful eyes. Jungkook-ah was right, it's like looking into the ocean." Jimin said peering down at her.
She looked at him standing close to her, resting his elbows on her bed and bending over close to her face.
In spite of her realization of who these boys were, her breath caught at the sight of him so close. He smiled and the monitor started to go off again.
He laughed.
"Ahh, this is going to be so much fun." He said still chuckling down at her.
"Stop flustering the poor girl, Jimin-ah. She's still not well enough. You should all leave now, let her rest." Jin scolded.
"Oh but Hyung........" Taehyung started.
"Enough." A deep authoritative voice interrupted, coming from the man who had been quietly standing at the foot of her bed.
"Jeez, keep your hair on Hyung, I was just having some fun." Jimin quipped
"Leave. Now!" The man said again narrowing his eyes at the boys.
"Arasso Arasso" they both answered as they hung their heads and walked away.
"Feel better Sua. I'll come back to see you after some time." Taehyung called from the door.
"Rest well" from Jimin
And then they were gone leaving the room feeling empty and quiet. The man at the foot of her bed walked up to her. His hands in the pockets of his jeans standing taller than all of the rest had been.
"Seokjinie, I would like to talk to her please." He said to Jin
"Ok Joonie but make it quick and don't stress her out too much, please." Jin answered moving away from the bed intending to leave them to talk alone.
"No!" Sua exclaimed reaching out to grab Jin's wrist. "Don't Leave me" Her eyes pleading him.
"Oh OK. Namjoon-ah?" he asked looking surprised at Sua's reaction but he was glad she felt safe with him.
"Fine. Stay Hyung." Namjoon shrugged.
He turned his sharp gaze on Sua.
"I'm Kim Namjoon. I'm the head of this family." Namjoon spoke formally.
"I want to apologize on behalf of my brother for leaving you in the basement like that. We don't make a habit of keeping prisoners here and that is the only excuse I can offer you for the monstrous treatment you have received. We will try to make you comfortable till you get back on your feet."
He paused making sure he had her complete attention.
"However, I'm sorry, but letting you go was not a promise Yoongi was free to make. That is and will be my decision and mine alone. You need to understand that I cannot put my family in danger. But I can promise you this, Yoon Sua, no harm will come to you while you are in our care." He finished. His sincerity ringing true through every word.
Sua nodded. It didn't seem like she had any other option anyway. "Thank you." She answered timidly.
"I'll leave you to rest now. I hope you feel better soon." Namjoon said with a small bow in her direction. "Jin?" he asked.
"I'll stay with her, Namjoon-ah. You go on ahead without me." Jin answered looking at Namjoon pointedly. A silent conversation seemed to take place between them until Namjoon nodded and left the room.
"Don't mind my brother Sua. He looks all stern and formal but his heart is in the right place. They are all good boys, really." He said fondly.
"Brother?" she asked curiously. "You don't look like brothers. Though you are all unbelievably handsome" She allowed grudgingly.
Jin laughed.
"We are not related by blood if that's what you are asking. But for all intents and purposes, yes, they are my brothers. They have been more of a family to me than the ones who I actually share blood with." He answered. His eyes were far away, she noticed.
His mind had left the room. She let him sit in silence for some time while she observed him. His hair was dark, styled in way that it pulled back exposing his forehead. His lips were plump with a slight smile playing on them. He looked kind, she thought again. Her eyes wandered down to his body noting the broad shoulders leading down to a lean muscular chest.
"Like what you see?" he asked teasingly.
Sua averted her eyes, embarrassed at being caught staring.
"Come on now. You need to rest." Jin advised "I'll be right here when you wake up." He settled into a chair near her.
But Sua was too wound up to close her eyes. She fidgeted with the IV on her hand and then the blanket trying to pull at the invisible lint.
"Don't worry Jag-eun Sae. You are safe with me." He said lightly.
"I know." Sua answered in a small voice. "I trust you."
Jin chuckled and laid a light hand on her eyes. "Sleep now."
"I can't" she whined.
"Would you like me to sing for you?" He asked.
"OK"
"Close your eyes then."
Jin hummed quietly filling the room with sweet music.
Sua felt herself starting to calm down as the beautiful words of his song flowed through her.
"It's so strange
I definitely love you so much
I wanted to adjust everything for you and live for you too
But the more I did that, I couldn't handle the storm in my heart."
Underneath the smiling mask, my true self is now coming out,
I'm the one I should love in this world
Me, who shines, my precious soul
Now I finally realize, oh, so I love me,
Though I may lack some things, I'm so beautiful
I'm the one I should love."
He paused taking a deep breath.
"That was......" words failed her. "You have a beautiful voice."
"Thank you. Did you like the song?" He asked
She nodded not trusting herself to come up with words good enough to describe how beautiful she thought the song was. It spoke to the deepest parts of her soul.
"It's called Epiphany."
"I love it." She said her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
He looked at her and brushed away a rogue tear that had slipped out unnoticed.
"Could you sing it again please?" she asked.
"Of course. Only if you promise not to cry and actually try to sleep?" Jin pulled her blanket up to her chin and adjusted her pillow before settling down in his chair and humming again.
She sighed. She was safe with him. This beautiful man with his kind eyes and broad shoulders, she was safe than she had ever been before. His voice washed away all her fears and she finally allowed sleep to pull her under.
