After two exams and three CTCs, only ten students with A- or better standing grade made it to Mr Evans' trip to the operahouse.
Inside Mrs Jogh's RV, only six roll-out beds were available and the girls were bestowed the honour of accommodating those comfy beds as long as they agreed to do the cooking.
The journey to the main city which was supposed to take only an hour stretched to two because of the traffic jam inside the urban area.
Yet Mr Evans was able to reach the opera house precinct a couple hours before they needed to attend the show, but brunch had to be done on the road instead of a pit stop} .
"Quickly with doll up, boys," he hollared to the male students inside the RV once the girls had overuse their turn to dress for the matinee show. They had parked at the nearest campervan site, which was a park in the heart of the city.
It wasn't like a regular park at all. There were birds, dogs, koalas and even wallabies wandering around yet each path was infested with people, especially couples.
Unintentionally, Molly and Aga ended up wearing the same shade of blue. Molly looked resplendent in her knee-length dress and pashmina while Aga had bespoke jacket and tapered slacks that made him look like a million dollars.
In fact, all the girls were oohing when Aga came out, as he had worn his mop of hair down.
"Aga, who is your fairy godmother? Can I have her number?" the studious Sheila Razi asked uncharacteristically.
The rest of the class laughed.
Mr Evans then told them to follow the icon of the opera house and enjoy the walk.
Iqball managed to corner Ballqis and they walked as backmarkers of the group. Molly and Aga got a little carried away photographing the animals they found on the way.
Mr Evans walked with Gregory and Patel while the rest trailed closely behind, intrigue by Mr Evans' admission that he was once a performer too. The entourage strolled for nearly two kilometres before the majestic opera house emerged within their skyline. They took pictures and Mr Evans got a pedestrian to capture a group picture.
At the entrance they found out Mr Evans had bought tickets that came with a high-tea party invite. As they had an hour to spare, they were able to enjoy the spread leisurely.
"We look like students, still," Ballqis whispered to Iqball as they people-watch the crowd at the operahouse.
Almost everyone was in near black-tie clothing, but theirs looked tailored, expensive.
"I guess no one bought their shirt at the Gap," Iqball agreed. "But you look absolutely stunning," he told her.
Ballqis laughed. The tan lacey top and deep burgundy wide cut pants she was wearing were branded items, but they were preloved.
"You look amazing as well," she said.
Iqball gave himself a once-over. He was wearing a white top matched with a formal slim-fit grey jacket and a black denim fitted pants.
"Gap," he answered with a chuckle.
"Molly and Razi totally transformed, as if it was necessary," commented Ballqis.
Iqball agreed. "They're kinda like Clark Kent, all they have to do is remove their glasses and they'd be ready for the runaway."
"And I didn't realize Aga is such a hottie! He's always looking so scruffy!"
"If I were a girl I'd spot his sharp features immediately. But you girls are always looking at his buffed body, admit it," he joked.
"If you must know, I don't fancy that body type in a man," Ballqis replied easily. Somehow she felt more and more comfortable talking to Iqball.
"And your type would be..." he fished.
Ballqis cackled like a witch.
The first bell rang. Mr Evans gave them the signal to regroup. Aga and Razi dashed the restroom before regrouping.
Their seats weren't among the closest to the stage in the hall. It wasn't the most expensive but Mr Evans said there was a specific reason why he booked the front row of the mezzanine cluster.
As the show started, they began to discover the reason.
The walkway between the front cluster and mezzanine was used by the musicians to dramatically make their entrance. Playing their instruments, violinists were walking slowly as they made their way to the music section. As the play begun, actors emerged from their cluster, feigning as audience all the way before their cue to enter.
Among them were the guest actress, a seasoned performer Mr Evans had personally known before. She got up from the end most seat in their row, strutted all the way to Mr Evans and sat on his arm rest as she delivered her lines. Sitting next to Mr Evans, Aga's jaw dropped at the sight of the beauty, making it hard for Molly to silence her chortle.
At the end of the show, the clock showed 6pm. They managed to take photos with the cast as Mr Evans seemed to know almost all of them.
Then Mr Evans shooed them away.
"Be safe, don't get into trouble and don't do anything I wouldn't do. Never leave your partner alone. You all have to be back at the RV before midnight. Those tents aren't going to pop up on its own," he cautioned.
Then he and the guest actress went to the actors' box for dinner.
Molly, Aga, Ballqis and Iqball walked towards the North entrance when the rest of their classmates had went off. Most of them wanted to spend time at the city, shopping and sight-seeing.
The four friends walked along the marina towards downtown. The view of the telecommunication tower was beautiful, so Iqball asked Molly to capture a shot of him and Ballqis in front of the tower.
"Let's take one too, Molly. I want to remember this day," Aga said.
Molly humoured him.
As they got to the nightlife district, faint thumping music greeted them.
"I've googled a place to have dinner, I'm sure you all will like it," Molly said, as they have some time before the show at the Zoo starts.
She found a Korean all-you-can-eat buffet that charges only $19 per person.
"I can go beef-free here while The Balls can go kosher," she said as the place served vegetarian friendly section with soups, noodles and condiments.
They certainly enjoyed it.
Then Iqball's friend called telling them he had gotten inside the Zoo and booked two tables at the right side of the stage.
Iqball's friend was his childhood friend, Azmir. He came with his university mate, Yuki.
"Yuki is my senior by a year, so she was tutoring me before she discovered we love the same music. She was such a bad tutor that I needed calming music to get me through Thermodynamics," Azmir said.
"Oh, so you're an Engineering student?" Molly asked.
He nodded. "How did you all meet Iqball?"
"We're all classmates. Our lecturer partnered Molly and I as well as Ballqis and Iqball in tests. If one of us don't do well, we drag our partner's grade down. Isn't that crazy," Aga said.
"Our lecturer even call Ballqis and Iqball, The Balls," Molly quipped.
Yuki and Azmir roared.
The show started with an opening band, Stellarella. The bassist, Aminah was Azmir's sister and Iqball's senior during primary school.
By the time the main band played, their table had seven people dancing to the catchy ska music. Ballqis was having so much fun, Iqball was mesmerised at the sight of her doing steps with the rest of the girls in the group.
Even Aga was gawking at Molly who had let her hair down to the good music.
The show ended at 10.30pm and Azmir, Yuki and Aminah walked with them all the way to the campervan park, joking and laughing.
"I might switch bands soon," Aminah said in between.
"Really, why?"
"Well, I've tried ska with Stellarella but I really wanna try punk music. I'm practicing some songs with two other girls, so we might start something," she said as she told them more about the drummer and the guitarist she's been hanging out with.
"So you just need a cool name for a punk band?" Aga said as the men in the group let the girls lead the way.
"Yeah..." Aminah said as Azmir humoured her sister.
"Three Punks In A Park," said Yuki, drawing inspiration from their surrounding.
"Friendly Opera?" offered Molly as she caught sight of light beams coming from the operahouse.
"How about Fishy Telepathy?" Ballqis tried.
Aminah jumped, almost like T7 did when he found out he'd be moving into a bigger tank with the neighbour he had been admiring.
"Fishy Telepathy sounds like us!" Aminah said.
"Pay her royalty," Azmir said from behind the ladies.
The group roared happily.
They reached the campsite where their classmates had already popped up the tent. A couple of them had already went to bed inside the tent, but a few were making coffee and hot cup noodles around the fire. They welcomed them with cups of the hot drink.
Iqball's friend joined them for a short while before booking a cab back to their university.
"Tonight was fun! Thank you Balls, Aga," sighed Molly as she sipped her last bit of warm coffee.
"I agree, Azmir, Yuki and Aminah are such good sport," said Ballqis.
"Ballqis, you named her new band. So in case they made it big, you can count on me to be your witness and claim some money," Aga promised.
Iqball laughed. Aminah had changed bands four times before, he doubt she'd stick to this one.
